Slack Software

Slack is a cloud-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Overall I like it, but I didn't use it by choice. Our company required everyone to use Slack as our form of communicating.

Pros

I like the you have the ability to join different channels and get notifications for specific channels that you specify.

Cons

Not as user-friendly as Gchat. I wish they made it possible to send specific GIFs easily instead of it auto generating a random GIF.

Slack for team IMs

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Customer Support

Value for Money

I think a platform like this is important for collaboration within and across teams. It has been especially important to our teams in which more than half of our staff work remotely.

Pros

I like that Slack allows users to set up channels to keep conversations on topic. We've set up group discussions on business and non-business related topics and our employees like to share information and pictures with each other in this group setting.

Cons

The only issue I've run into is that you have to have the app open in order to get notices. I know that seems basic, but some of the people I personally communicate with don't always open up their app, so IMs can sit for hours.

Pros

Slack is a great platform for project collaboration. Stop using emails to communicate about current projects -- it's a bad idea! An app like Slack is helpful for conducting the necessary communication without it getting lost in an already too-busy email inbox.

Cons

No real complaints about Slack. I've used Slack on laptop and phone, and have to say that the app is clean and easy to use on both.

Pros

This is a fun workplace communication tool, that doesn't even feel like work. It is helpful to use and in my opinion really raises employee moral overall. It is a great way to incorporate modern day instant messaging in a professional manner.

Cons

This may take some time to get to use if social media or "texting" isn't your first choice. After some time getting use to it, it is very helpful.

It's a nice app to help groups of people stay in touch and collaborate digitally and keep track of their ideas.

Cons

Not as user friendly. We had a few teammates who did not fully understand how to use it. The flow of the stream was not ideal and it had too many ways to do things, so it needed a bit of time to feel like I had gotten the grips on how to use it.

Slack is a great app. I always recommend this in my department so we can communicate much easier

Pros

It has a search function, file uploads for document purposes, unlimited channels, team creation, and archiving.

Pros

Slack is incredibly easy to use and took less than 5 minutes to download and install on my phone and computer. As an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) product, Slack is a superior offering . . . especially since it's free. Perfect for small businesses and start-ups to connect employees.

Cons

There is very little I have to say in terms of negatives. Ideally, it would be great if Slack had an FAQ page. The app also tends to "freeze up" when not used for an extended period of time - always be sure to refresh.

Value for Money

In general lines has a good interaction with the chats better than whatsapp or telegram. It seems strange to me that it is not used as one of the main chat apps ... but, well, the market is big and the competition is tough. However, it does not mean that it is a good work tool that keeps the whole team connected in good communication.

Pros

I love the organized way to present the chats, it makes it easier to be in contact with my work team at the same time that I am with my personal contacts. It has a more focus to companies for its design, in addition to the easy management of channels and bots with multiple uses. It also integrates many add-ons that adapt with google.

Cons

Failure a bit in notifications and audio and video playback is not very good, should improve those features. On the other hand, I do not think I'll find anything else that disgusts me about the platform.

For now, our organization just uses Slack as a communication and collaboration option. It is by no means going to replace other forms of communication (we also use Google Hangouts a lot, arguably more because it's native to Gmail), but it's a great option. This is also my preferred method to communicate with certain freelancers who don't operate in Google Hangouts.

Pros

Easy to chat and/or collaborate with individuals both in and outside of your organization. Can be used for business or personal. The desktop/laptop app and mobile app are equally easy to use and you can use them seamlessly -- start a conversation on your computer, finish on your mobile device. Extensive app integration catalog that -- includes things like Google Drive, DropBox, Giphy, Twitter, etc.

Cons

Some of the more in-depth integrations take a bit of time to learn how to use within the Slack workspace, but it's not a huge deal. There will always be some type of learning curve.

Awesome chat software for startups and small teams. Larger companies will almost always need payed subscription.

Pros

Ease of use. Creating group conversations and channels is very easy. Also, having multiple workspaces active at all time is awesome if you work for different companies that have their own workspaces. This can be also used for multiple projects. Emoticons are awesome as well and promote casual conversations within the team. Sharing links and code snippets is great as well.

Cons

It's free usage limits the amount of history messages you can see to 10k, which actually gets used up pretty fast with a team of 20 people, so it is very likely you wont be able to see any chat history older then 2 weeks.

Overall, it is the backbone of how we chatter; which. But ultimately there are limitations on the possible rules that can be set. Nonetheless its ease of use and ability to accept integrations/alerts has been a lifesaver.

Pros

Easy to set up dedicated channels and streamline communications, while reaching the organization on every device. The ability to assign groups and alert specific folks, or channel subscribers, is a slick aspect.

Cons

The administrative controls are a bit lacking and end users can make Slack a playground of gif's, which while fun can crowd out the intended administrative purpose of fostering clear communication channels.

I loved the fact that Slack eliminated the need for multiple SEO platforms, which made it a de facto one stop shop for all SEO needs. And as a communication tool among team members, especially remote team members, it was great. Overall, I'd say this is a great addition to any team if the members of the team buy-in to using it.

Pros

One of the key aspects I love about Slack is that it incorporates the old AOL Instant Messenger group chat room format. This make it so much easier to chat with a team simultaneously. It also makes it a lot easier than most programs to pivot between multiple conversations at once. Additionally, uploading and sharing all types of files is easy, and the user interface was relatively simple to navigate through for all team members.

Cons

The problem we had with Slack was buy-in. Many members of our team did not see the point in using Slack because of other programs like Saleforce, Gmail chat, etc. In fact, this is my major drawback: whether it's communication, organizing meetings, sharing files or generally just as a collaboration tool, Slack doesn't standout as the best tool for any one thing.

Slack is another mode of communication and when used at a team level can be used in lieu of Texts & any IM platform. Messages can be categorized ( channels). DMs can be used - it can be limited to your org, or shared to many. It can be the primary communication medium for any team, and if you start to use it regularly, it can replace email. that's it's big selling point -- Although Be careful, it can quickly become "One other place to have to look for something" if you're not careful

Pros

There are quite a few chat apps out now - Teams ( free, sort-of), Discord (not just games), Google Chat ( free for some), Skype ( Dead), Line ( garbage).....

Despite some of these being build on the same basic platform ( Elektron), Slack works the best. I have used them all, and Slack is the most reliable, and easiest to use. It works the same on each platform ( Windows, Web and smartphone)

Cons

At last check the screenshare/monitor share function doesn't work with multi-monitors. Slack is the best of class app, so there's a free teir (10,000 messages IIRC) and then a paid tier. It's worth it.

While I understand the intent of the design, I'm not a fan of the Conversation Threading Method in Slack. It does work and is fairly intuitive, but Microsoft Teams did it one better.

Some days I wish categories/channels could have sub channels

I'm really sad that the kudos feature is not working in a free option and that after your 2 weeks' holiday leave most of conversations are gone.

I just love using it. I use Slack every day because I work remotely and it's a great tool to discuss not only projects, but also chat with colleagues from all over the world. I never use email anymore since I started using Slack.

Pros

Slack is very easy to use and I've been using it with several teams. I love the way you can create channels and have several discussions, but only including people that are relevant to each discussion. Messages do not get lost in email and you can search too!

Cons

When you're using Slack with several teams, it can get quite busy. I'd love to see some better channel management. Right now, you can star those important ones and mute those you don't want to hear, but additional features would help busy teams.

Pros

I love that you can search back in conversations for phrases and jump back to past convos (the timeframe on this is potentially limited based on price).

I LOVE that you can create conversations with individuals, channels, or even a custom group of people.

It's also very easy to drag and drop and upload pictures, documents, etc.

The app is great - super easy to use as well. Going mobile doesn't seem like a limitation at all with this app!

Cons

There have been a few Slack outages - sometimes it takes some time for the status board to update and reflect those outages, which is always pretty frustrating.

I'm also not super clear on all the keyboard shortcuts, and it's easy to accidentally add those.
For example, containing words in ~tildas~ will strikethrough and *asterisks* will bold words - sometimes this can get a little annoying when you are trying to emphasize words.
