Upserve Software


 

Upserve is a cloud-based point of sale (POS) solution that caters to restaurants and bars, helping them manage their interaction with the customers. Key features include shift notes, tip adjust, spilt checks, logbook and more.

Upserve allows users to assign tables to different zones and get a view of what is happening at the tables. Servers can course items, add modifiers, customize menus and fire orders with one tap while adding notes to checks that are seen by the front- and back-of-house. Restaurants can set access levels for manager approval for changes to checks and set automated gratuity levels. The solution's 'Upserve Live' feature allows users to track restaurant and bar sales, guest counts, sales items and week-over-week trends.

Upserve comes with hardware components like pre-configured Apple iPad, Meraki Networking Gear, slice stand, printer, swiper and EMV readers that can be separately purchased.

Upserve is available on a monthly subscription basis that includes support via phone, email and online help-desk.

Ease of install, ease of use, backend reporting all great. For a medium sized business it works great.

Cons

Integrations with 3rd parties could be more robust. They'e about 18 months behind Toast in general re: software upgrades. I would not recommend for multi unit operators.

Cons

Very few cons. Recently they had a spike in users and this caused some crashes, but this has since been fixed and I have experienced no issues

Pros

Very easy interface and hardware setup, the final user learn fast on how to use it. The support team is always there when we need

Lack of user log and some safer control in the admin / management level, this can be a problem. The reports are not the best in the accounting point of view.

Pros

Breadcrumb is very user friendly POS system with high level of functionality. A constantly evolving cloud based system.

Cons

Being stuck to the Ipad limits some costs involved with adopting the system. The features that are lacking still have a strong chance of being developed.

Pros

Very fast in the front of the house operation and really easy to use. Easy to manage and take reports.

Cons

Servers go down on the worst possible moments

I've had Breadcrumb for 3 years now at my restaurant. The first two years it was adequate, easy to use and more or less stable in spite of a few server outages here and there. However, the back-end was pretty cumbersome, full of dead ends and potholes that could easily be fixed with a tiny bit of coding. For instance, if you want to edit a menu item, but while editing you choose to add the item to a new display group, the page changes and does not save your edits to date. Also, you can never delete a menu item. You can archive, but not in batches, so it takes forever. But whatever, overall good enough to not have to go through the hassle of switching to a new pos system.

Since Breadcrumb has been acquired by Upserve last year, it's been a gradual downhill slide to stupidity. The first few months it seemed all they cared about was to convert their new Breadcrumb customers to Upserve products -- things we just do not need -- instead of focusing hard and quick on improving the new system they were in charge of. Since then, it has gotten worse. There have been server outages on busy Saturday nights, mandatory software updates -- on busy Saturday nights ... you get the picture. Uber frustrating. And frankly, there has been next to nothing done to improve the software use, or extend features. It seems as if Upserve is not capable of handling the new transition, and I am done complaining to them about functionality. The support team is nice and sympathetic, but they have no power to make the changes we need. We will be moving on to TouchBistro in the coming month. I would not get involved with this POS, it seems to be on a downward slope to obsolescence.

Great idea - but they cannot support

I have been trying for weeks to get breadcrumb to do anything about compensating us for our monetary losses, the hours invested in all of this, and not much has been done. The system is not that expensive overall, so I guess you get what you pay for. They are simply not ready for primetime.

Pros

This is actually a great product, with the platform that is more expensive than any other that I've seen without costing $ and being hardware focused.

Cons

We took on this product in October 2016, and it has gotten progressively worse since then. We trained and showed everyone how to have a system work, and now we are shopping for other options, as this system regularly fails in the middle of service creating mass chaos for all of my staff who have to deal with crash kits and do their best to continue service. The system has offered a serious hit to our staff morale.

Super simple interface. I love that it is iOS based and items can be changed on the fly from any station. Also great reporting on the back end and I love that it includes a costing function.

Likes Least

That it apparently is not taking on any additional customers and appears to be going out of business. I was told the whole team had been let go and Groupon, their parent company, was closing up their shop. Also support could have been slightly more helpful and it would be nice to have better note functions. A scheduling function would be nice. Emailed individual daily sales to employees and the ability to account for tips that have been split between multiple employees, i.e. tipping out.

Recommendations

Choose a product that can already accommodate all of your needs. Don't choose one based on price and try to jerry-rig it to get it to where you need. POS software should be very flexible and be capable of accommodating all of your changing needs.

I am a first time user as well as my entire staff and we have been able to get all of our questions answered in a timely manner. The support team has submitted the couple requests I have made to their engineering department and we will find out if it is something that can be done. I appreciate Breadcrumb offering to try and create a new button for me rather than just saying no.

Pros

The software is very user friendly and you can tell it is designed for restaurants.

Cons

I have had a couple issues with the order of items on printed tickets in my kitchen but the support team informed me that my request has been sent to the engineering department.

Very satisfied with the system. It was our top choice out of many and so far I believe it has been a good choice.

Pros

The POS is intuitive and easy to train staff. Maintenance and settings are straightforward. HQ utilities give a lot of useful data and easy retrieval of information presented in a helpful way

Cons

There are a lot of issues to work out with To Go and Delivery. Dine in functionality is superb, but the other two are in need of some revision. Checkout reporting and traceability could also be improved.

You can put orders in real fast, there's even a search bar so you don't have to hunt through each menu for an item you aren't familiar with. But expect daily glitches

Pros

Pretty easy to organize menu items, and you can put in counts and they update in real time.

Cons

Seems to crash or glitch a lot more than other systems. It's easy to use when it works... but I've never seen a POS fail as much as Breadcrumb

I enjoy it I think it's been a great program for our restaurant thus far.

Pros

I really enjoy breadcrumb because of how easy it is to use, it really doesn't take someone skilled in the tech world to navigate through breadcrumb. When bringing new staff into the restaurant they pick up the ipad and begin playing around with breadcrumb and before lunch they're pretty well off on how to use it.

Cons

I don't like that they won't allow you to have pictures. I think this would be awesome to have especially when showing customers what food they're ordering if they're curious.

It is pretty good- I wish the look was a bit cleaner. The ipad stand don't swivel like a lot of competitors.

Pros

It is simple to use and the customer service and great.

Cons

There are features that are missing which we have been eager to see put in place - The tip screen is a huge problem for us. Also for multiply venues changing 1 thing needs to be done per store and that seems like an easy software implementation but they said it would take 2 months to convert to the brand menu.

Ease of functionality both from the servers side and the admin side. We have been overwhelmingly pleased after changing from a difficult system, to find one that is formatted for restaurants of our calibre and is always looking to improve! Customer service is TOP NOTCH!

Cons

There are still a few kinks they are working out, but I love that they are visibly working on each one! We had a difficult time with the set up, but after we worked those kinks out, everything has been smooth sailing!

Compared to its competitors an absolute walk in the park. So self explanatory and easy to customize.

Pros

How user friendly it is. It’s easy to add in items and delete. You don’t need a ton of training to get it up and running. Customer service is always so helpful.

Cons

Dealing with customer service is by far the worst experience ever...you get bounced around told different things by each employee and it's all lies, then they try to steal your money for services never completed or rendered!!! Complete fraud

I Loved the sales guy at first, he made me so many promises.....but then...when it came down to performing....they fell apart....if you like being lied to, and loosing money and worst of all customers.....use this company

No drawer reconciliation, Cant handle same day refunds doesn't print out receipts for customers stating they are getting refunds...you cant differentiate terminals, meaning cooks cant tell if your drive thru window sent an order or if your walk up window did! Refunding takes over 5 steps.....if you have a fast paced environment.....Good Luck! This isnt for you!!

Effective system, easy to use and terrific customer support.

Pros

No matter what issue arises, I can call customer support 24/7 and there is always someone courteous, professional and knowledgeable on the other line. Issues are always resolved quickly and to my satisfaction.

Cons

The back button on the menu (backend) doesn't take you back to the previous screen but to the start of the menus. I haven't figured out how to track inventory against par values ( also backend) or if it's even possible.

I am an IT tech who has installed and maintained every type of POS out there. This is definitely one of my favorites for restaurants with one station or ten. Great for bars and restaurants with heavy traffic - very reliable.

Pros

After doing computer repair for 20 years and point of sale for retail, restaurants, and hotels - I can honestly say that Breadcrumb offers one of the best solutions. Apple Hardware-based, good hard-wired printers, good quality, and solid router/firewall installs with the best equipment out there. I feel like this POS offering is more resilient and reliable than the competitors due to the good hardware and the easy to use APP. Calling into support day or late at night you will speak to a knowledgeable and helpful tech who gets you the info you need to carry on business. They have remote access and can see where the problem is - instead of sending you an overpriced technician from out of state at twice the price because you're mysteriously not up and running (rare). No service is perfect but having a reliable tech on the other end of the phone is worth it's weight in gold.

Cons

I would guess that a con is the high price of hardware but that's unavoidable - if you're using the best hardware available (Apple, StarTSP, Cisco Meraki) then it might carry a higher price tag but the tradeoff is reliability. You wouldn't get Breadcrumb if you're trying to cut corners and save money - this is the real deal iPad based and dependable system. Cost is always on the mind of business owners so this could be an issue for some business owners but if you aren't spending an hour a day working through tech issues aren't you really just saving money in the long run?

Overall it has been a positive as far as usage, reliability, and training. Support has been mostly helpful but even Tier 2 doesn't seem to be well-versed to solve the more complex problems. When it becomes more complex, the ticket often just remains unsolved and gets closed out.

Pros

Very easy to setup.
Very easy to train.
Figuring out solutions without contacting support is straightforward

Cons

Still needs web enabled tweaks to reduce repetitive entry on setup
Inability to set printers based on role (not just iPad location) means lots of thrown away tickets
Doesn't always find new IP based on mac address, sometimes has to be manually set
Tech support not well-versed in the Meraki setup so not very good at troubleshooting (Even Tier 2 clearly doesn't know how to solve lots of problems)
Software updates are tenuous and can require a lot more interaction than I prefer. Often having to turn off the other tablets or rebooting tablets multiple times before it will update.

Overall it's been very positive with minor hiccups. I will say that the support is great which is a huge positive. You talk to an English speaking operator 24/7.

Pros

Quick, easy and simplified. Easy access for small business owners to quickly get the important information they need. Items are easy to add etc.

Cons

When the restaurant grows, the software starts to have downfalls. Reports then are slightly limited as we've grown to have more managers that only need limited access. The printers didn't want to sync to our wireless system so we had to bring them back out to do a wired set up.
