Why I use EnergyCap
Using EnergyCap has been easy to understand and easy to use.
PROSI like everything about it. It holds our energy data. I can generate the reports we need. I like the dashboards I can share with people who need overall snapshots of our energy use.
CONSI can't think of any. I like the way it works and it keeps getting better.
Reasons for switching to EnergyCAP
The School Dude version was older and updated less. When I found out it was EnergyCap, we went there.
Vendor Response
Wow! Thank you for the compliments. We are so glad to know that you are getting what you want and need out of the platform. And as you mentioned, we are always trying to improve, so we are glad you see that happening. Glad to have you as a customer! Thank you for your partnership.

The EnergyCAP Software Platform works for South Dakota Higher Education
Our overall experience with the EnergyCAP software platform has been very positive. We are able to collect the necessary utilities consumption and cost data without any hassle and it is easy to analyze the data on EnergyCAP and print reports detailing usage by month and/or season.
PROSThere are many things to like about the EnergyCAP software platform. What I like best about the platform is that that it supports all six of South Dakota's public universities and two special schools. Every year legislators want an understanding of what our university system's utilities consumption is and why it is the way it is. EnergyCAP provides an easy-to-use platform that captures all of our data and printing cumulative reports is easy and understandable.
CONSOver the last three years, the South Dakota Board of Regents has had to migrate from three different EnergyCAP software platforms. in 2017 we were using version 1. In 2018 we had to migrate to EnergyCAP version 3 because they were ending support for the legacy platform. In 2019 we had to migrate to EnergyCAP version 7 because of the phase out of Flash-based software platforms. It took many of our users a lot of extra effort to learn the new software and become comfortable with it.
Reason for choosing EnergyCAP
The EnergyCAP team of employees, from the account management team to the technical assistance folks, are all very knowledgeable and friendly. We have never had to wait longer than 24-hours for a response from the representatives of EnergyCAP when we have reached out with a question or problem.

EnergyCAP and Understanding your data
I am happy using EnergyCAP. I have learned so much about our energy because of the data mining I can do with EnergyCAP. I like being able to provide our engineers with the data they need to support energy improvement projects, and all we have to do is a quick query.
PROSEnergyCAP helps our team with invoice tracking and verifying if the invoices are "in line" with historical use so that we can assess the invoice appropriateness or look for reasons we might be seeing a spike. We use the queries to track energy consumption and to help with budget management. I appreciate the weather normalization features so we can easily compare year upon year of energy use, despite weather variances. The reports are customizable. We can add and track custom meters not typically associated with utilities, such as permitting fees etc.
CONSThe program takes a moment to learn to navigate: Learning the differences between the modules and how they function together. Learning how to correctly write queries will unlock the potential, but those can be tricky, as in any database program. Overall, I really cant imagine trying to manage as much data as we do without EnergyCAP.

There is tons of information available but knowing where to find it is not always easy.
I used as different version of ECAP prior to the version I use now but after a training session, tech help to navigate through the changes and the use of a cheat sheet to convert old bill codes to new bill codes I find it easier to gather data. There are many more options. I think on going training that builds upon what you know woils be helpful.

EnergyCAP has launched the City of Philadelphia into a new sphere of data processing power.
EnergyCAP has many tools to help organizations in various ways. Philadelphia has multiple utilities that are localized, as in, not spread through the country. With that said, we most like the reporting functions, ability to see use and cost quickly, great customer service, ability to easily share data with internal AND external stakeholders, EnergyCAP brings data to life with customizable reporting and dashboards, it works with Portfolio Manager to benchmark buildings more quickly, the ability to change hierarchies or move data within the organization quickly and efficiently with setup sheets, it has open API to communicate with other software in the City, and EnergyCAP uses Bill CAPture, which is a service that uploads bills into EnergyCAP. EnergyCAP has given our team more time to work on other projects using the data rather then spending time manipulating the data in spreadsheets or another cumbersome process.
CONSThe City of Philadelphia has carbon goals to reach. Tracking greenhouse gases is a core part of reaching those goals and the City has been tracking GHGs for more years than has used EnergyCAP. EnergyCAP does track GHGs, but it is EnergyCAP's calculation. If the City uses that calculation, the emissions change. To maintain integrity of the trends, the City has opted to continue to use a separate calculation to report GHG emissions.

EnergyCAP
We use EnergyCAP to track the cost and usage of the utilities in the County facilities. Based on this data, improvements are planned to maximize the efficiency in the facilities, which result in cost saving for the County.
PROSEnergyCAP software is extremely user friendly and reliable system. I have been managing this system for 17 years through various versions of the system. With every version or release of the system, the quality of the product and functionality improves. Excellent reporting engine, which satisfies the needs of every user in Financial, Energy Management, or Administration divisions.
CONSThe account/user setting is simple and efficient. It would be helpful to allow for more user profile setting and cost center divisions.
Reason for choosing EnergyCAP
When I started at my current position, the County already owned EnergyCAP (under a different name). We have been very happy with the product and there was never a need to look for another product. We have expanded the use to multiple agencies to-date and planning to add other agencies in the near future.

Easy to track problem meters & buildings
Easy to track and dial in on buildings who may be over-using due to a mechanical issue or a problem within the building.
CONSReports names have changed a lot. Seems like just when you get the hang of it all, they shake it up again.
Vendor Response
Bridget, we love to see the word "easy" to describe our tools. Great feedback regarding reports. Any changes we make are intended to improve user experience, so I'm sorry to hear certain report updates have thrown you for a loop (check out our help desk release notes about a feature that might help: https://helpcenter.energycap.com/um/release_notes). We will consider that feedback and look for better ways to release those types of updates! Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments.

Casual User
I have always had success obtaining information and data efficiently and easily.
PROSIntuitive to use and navigate. I am not a daily user and typical look for data to aggregate on another platform.
CONSNothing negative to share. One con would be the great number of reports available. A better method to understand each report presents would be useful. I am think a reports user book with sample outputs and brief description of the data being returned.
Vendor Response
Bill, thank you for taking the time to provide your input. We are well aware that our reports can be POWERFUL, yet overwhelming. Although there are filters* to help you narrow down report options, there's always room for improvement - which we're always aiming to do! Thank you for the suggestion of the "Report User Book." *You can see an outline of report filters available to user here: https://helpcenter.energycap.com/um/reports/reports_overview

Cost and usage oversight.
An excellent product that allows hands on data to make schedule adjustments or identify areas of abnormal use patterns.
PROSIt has been a tremendous asset in tracking and analyzing cost and usage. It has also provided easy access to necessary data when applying for energy grants and rebates.
CONSSome difficulties in getting data to show in the format needed. Mostly because of user input.

For what it does, it can't be beat.
Pros ---Because it integrates weather (hdd/cdd) and provides an expected cost calculation and then marries with your actual utility bills, it gives you the most accurate reflection of your utility efficiency. You should never rely on just comparing one utility bill to the the one a year prior and assuming you've found the actual savings. ---Allows you to import utility bills, saving hours of hand-keying in data every month. Wouldn't you rather be spending your time analyzing bills rather than entering them? ---(what seems like) Hundreds of reports will help you analyze bills, demand, average unit cost, cost leaders, savings leaders, etc. that will help you investigate problems more quickly and effectively. ---Customer service tickets tend to have a quick turnaround time. Cons --- (what seem like) Hundreds of reports whose names or descriptions don't always help. And the more reports that are added, the more the waters are muddied. ---Recommendations for upgrades/improvements to reports tend to come back as a very simple, "We can't do that." It's unfortunate, because at least one that I've sent in would benefit ALL users. (Print all filters at the top or bottom of EVERY page, or at least at the top or bottom of the first page, where the most helpful information is found. Most of the time, I throw the last page away...and that's where the filters are printed.) But despite those cons, this is a great tool, and I can't imagine trying to do this job without it.

I've used this product for many years. It's a great tool for managing and analyzing utility bills.
The ability to benchmark your buildings energy usage with similar buildings in order to focus in on the best opportunities to reduce costs and save energy.
PROSThe new version 7 makes it easier to graphically view bill data in a variety of ways through the dashboard. I especially like the mapping feature which allows you to quickly zero in on a particular building or facility
CONSIntegration with 3rd party billing data providers is too complex and takes many hours of staff and vendor time to complete.

The software is easy to use and very flexible specially when you host your own database server.
Pros: Bill Entry Template creation is very flexible. Can easily upload electronic bill data using the import function. You can create your own custom report when you host your own database server. Easy tree structure and unit system setup. Cons: Standard Reports needs more improvement or modification on the header information especially when the fiscal year doesn't start on January which is actually misleading in terms of the billing period year. No selection on the Weather Station Temperature unit. The default unit is always in degree Fahrenheit. The GHG Emission Factors cannot be edited within the application. There is a limitation on assigning a Rate Code. It only limits 2 rate code changes per account. It automatically delete the oldest rate code that were assigned to that particular account.

The software does far more than I could ever imagine!
I am an 'old dog' who isn't the sharpest technology tack on the block. So when tasked with learning about the new version of EnergyCap I wasn't really looking forward to that because what I was using met all of my school districts needs. However, I had an exceptional experience with the people at EnergyCap and they walked me through everything I had questions about and are there whenever I have needed them. There are far more reports available than I will most likely ever use, but what I do require is easily derived. I know there are others who need and use many of the reporting pieces. However, for me I'm still interested in the basics such as "How are we doing compared to..."? Nothing but the highest regards for the product and the people.

We use EnergyCAP to manage all of our corporate utility bills.
We've been using EnergyCAP for around 2 years now, and in just that time period alone, we've saved thousands of dollars in direct refunds to our company from errors found in bills. EnergyCAP has allowed us to understand our energy consumption profile better than we ever have, to see areas where we can save energy, and to assess possible sustainability initiatives. The greatest value that our company receives from EnergyCAP is transparency in our utility cost and consumption and enhanced ability to find potential billing errors that often result in refunds or bill credits. Savings and refunds found through the software have essentially paid for the cost of EnergyCAP.

Energy Conservation
The City Council made energy conservation a priority for our organization, in part so we can mitigate the impact of rising utility costs and protect our taxpayers. The integration and automation features of EnergyCAP will greatly enhance our efforts to manage our many utility accounts, track and analyze usage data, and find ways to reduce energy consumption in City buildings. The City of Chandler will be a more efficient organization with EnergyCAP.
