About Dedoose

Dedoose is a cloud-based collaboration platform for researchers in a variety of industries including the sciences, teachers, students, data analysts and more. It offers communication tools, file management and task assignment.

Dedoose is a platform that allows users to analyze qualitative and mixed-methods research with text, photos, audio, videos, spreadsheet data and more. Users can create and modify "codes" to tag various stages of their methodology and organize research procedures. Descriptor fields allow users to collect information describing data sources.

Users can begin projects based on existing data sets or create projects directly in Dedoose. An integrated chat feature and memos enable users to communicate with one another in real time. Access groups can be established to specify permissions settings for groups of users, which determines which data they may view and modify.

Support is offered via email and over the phone. Pricing is per user per month.

Best tool I know for analyzing qualitative data: unfair that it's so unknown for the overall public

I use Dedoose in my master's research, in which I have a large volume of data to carry out a systematic literature review. In this case, after performing the data extraction using another tool, in this case DistillerSR (or Covidence, but it could even be an excel spreadsheet or a Word table), then I use Dedoose to perform the qualitative analysis of my data. It speeds up the process too much and the result is excellent.

Pros:

The tool's value proposition is excellent. It works well, being ideal for scientific research but also suitable for use in a business environment. The monthly cost is really low for what the tool offers of value. It is able to save hours of scientific data analysis work and is priced much lower than its competitors.

Cons:

Learning to use the tool is not easy. Since the tool is unfairly underused in the scientific community, collaboration with teams is difficult, as its use is not widespread. The fact that it is a web tool on the one hand makes it easier because it removes the barrier of interoperability between Windows, Mac and Linux. But for me, the best solution would be to have desktop apps for each of these platforms.

Reasons for switching to Dedoose

Dedoose is much cheaper than MaxQDA, and offers a much superior value proposition. MaxQDA is just more famous.

Lo que mas me ha gustado de esta aplicación, es la forma en que podemos asignar códigos de manera sencilla, su interfaz nos lo facilita. Además de ser una alternativa económica a otras aplicaciones populares.

Cons:

Al estar acostumbrado a utilizar aplicaciones similares, como ATLAS.ti o MAXQDA, la herramienta de redes facilita la forma para construir categorías.

Principalmente he buscado una alternativa mas accesible, sencilla e intuitiva para el análisis de datos cualitativos.

Pros:

Dedoose is a flexible and powerful tool to carry out qualitative and mixed methods analysis. I’ve use it for many research projects, and found the experience very fulfilling.

Cons:

Coding in PDF files can be a little clumsy. Also, if your research project extends overtime, paying the monthly subscription can become an issue, depending on your budget.
