My Company has been a user of Insite software for 24 years

I would highly recommend Insite & Field General. I use Insite for our earthwork quantities, pipe excavation and backfill quantities, subgrade material quantities, finish grade quantities asphalt, concrete and topsoil. And fine the quantities to be very accurate. I use Field General for our field survey and GPS layout. I build my own TINS for our GPS machine control. They are very accurate and easy to build in Field General.

PROS

Insite/ Field General has always been on the cutting edge of the technology. Whether it's been digitizer takeoff, PDF takeoff or CAD takeoff

CONS

Some of the reports could be a little more detailed. But all in all everything is okay

Vendor Response

Rick: We appreciate your kind words. We are just about to launch new classes for building models with Field General. Watch the newsletter for details. Let's screen share and find out what it is you are looking for in reports.

User Friendly Program

Overall this program has helped our company feel more confident about the cut/fill numbers we are using.

PROS

I appreciate how straight forward the program is. I am able to use this product to visualize the proposed site which is useful in figuring the logistics of the project.

CONS

Sometimes reading the reports can be a little confusing but it takes practice to understand.

Reasons for switching to InSite Elevation Pro

I had previously used InSite at a previous company and Earthworks did not have all the functions InSite offered.

Vendor Response

MacKenzie, thank you for your positive review. If you would like help clarifying the reports, we recommend taking the class Earthwork 2 available at https://insitesoftware.com/training/

Great Software

We do a lot of subdivision, multifamily and commercial development. Insite makes the dirt takeoff and pipe excavation and backfill quantities a fairly quick and accuarate process.

PROS

It provides the data we need and really is easy to learn. I like that it has a trenching calculation feature.

CONS

Trenching calculation feature hasn't been updated. Would like to see more customizable trench design in TDS setup.

Reason for choosing InSite Elevation Pro

Felt easier to use and trench module was very important to me.

Reasons for switching to InSite Elevation Pro

Paydirt and Trenchworks by Trimble was needing upgraded and Trimble wasn't going to support much longer.

Great software

All in all it’s a great Softwear. I’ve used a other company program and had lots of issues with inconsistencies. Since switching to Insite we’ve been able to generate a more consistent bid.

PROS

How simple it was to pick up and start working with it.

CONS

I would like to see a change or improvement on the offset tool. It at times can be daunting

Reasons for switching to InSite Elevation Pro

The inconsistency I was having and the difficulty it was to upload to gps equipment

Vendor Response

Jason, thank you for the review. We are close to releasing Elevation, which replaces the offset tool to streamline the process of modeling. Make sure you are signed up for our Newsletter (insitesoftware.com/support) to keep abreast of what is happening!

22 years of Insite!!

InSite has been great. I started my career using InSite and when I moved to another company, they were using Paydirt and that really was a downgrade. After a couple years, i was able to convince them to switch to InSite Sitework an everyone has been happy ever since.

PROS

I have been using InSite Sitework since I graduated College way back in 1998. This software was so easy to learn by a kid who didn't really know anything about dirt at the time. It really did help me learn about the industry from a hands on experience from the office to the field. I don't recall how many times I have called support, but each time has been a great learning experience.

CONS

Not to many, but i would only suggest adding perimeter lengths to subgrades since we need to know some lengths around buildings and parking lots. We have to trace some of these twice to get the info we need. Also add the surface area of rock alert so we could figure out areas to drill. (this has only been an issue a few times over my career). Lastly, the shrink/swell is a little different thinking than us dirt guys use. We tend to just do this by hand on our own. The theory is close but we approach it a little differently than the software.

Reason for choosing InSite Elevation Pro

Past experience of InSite was my selling point to Ownership and probably the high price of Agtek.

Reasons for switching to InSite Elevation Pro

As stated above, I used it InSite at my previous employer and suggested the change.

Vendor Response

Cory, thank you for your review, enthusiasm and suggestions. We are happy to have you as a long time InSite customer. Many of the recommendations are already in process!

InSite Estimating Software

My experience with learning the the software program and knowing the software personally has made me more valuable to the owner of the company, thus my level of pay has increased. To the owner he know that he will get a accurate takeoff, knowing the quantities are spot on and I can produce more work, which means more jobs can be taken off in a short period of time.

PROS

InSite software has been a fantastic tool for me, I have been using the program for 10 years now and has saved me so much time on estimating a project. Just that in itself pays for the program. I have found that the quantities it provides is spot on. It takes a lot of the guesswork out on bidding, knowing that you know your material quantities and how much excavation it takes to get the job to subgrade elevations. The program was easy to learn, I like the way the team at InSite is there to help you if you have questions about the program. I like how they keep upgrading the software each year to make my job easier. I would recommend taking the classes they offer when first starting out with this program. It will make the learning curve come much quicker. One other thing I like is the result print outs, they are easy to read and comprehend. I have to admit that Insite has made my job much easier, and that means more jobs can be bid in a short amount of time.

CONS

There's not really anything that I don't like about this software.

Vendor Response

Stan: Thank you for your review. We have shared this with the entire team as an affirmation of their hard work.

Accurate & Constantly improving

The confidence when submitting bids knowing your quantities are accurate is worth it's weight in gold. I highly recommend attending the training seminars. After nearly 15 years of using this program, I'm still learning new functions and shortcuts.

PROS

The accuracy of this program never ceases to amaze me. From small sites to large sites, the quantities are always spot on. The team at InSite is constantly looking for ways to improve the software. The PDF takeoff makes it much more portable, making it easier to travel and work directly from work sites. The new cloud function access to the program gives peace of mind not having to worry about where I left the USB key.

CONS

The PDF takeoff function works great when the PDF file is in vector format, however when it isn't, which can be common, it becomes very cumbersome and time consuming to perform the takeoff.

Reason for choosing InSite Elevation Pro

Recommendations from other estimators / contractors The graphics and reports Ease of use

Vendor Response

JP, thank you for your positive review. We are glad you find value in the training classes and the accuracy InSite provides. For anyone reading this review, most PDFs these days are vector, which mean the individual contours and footprints are drawn with stored lines, arcs, etc. much like a CAD file and offer easy selection. Scanned paper documents are a photograph of a document and require actual tracing of the data. A call to the engineer to see if the original plans are available is well worth the effort as they are almost always available and will most likely be vector.

Easy to use and excellent product!

InSite is an excellent product. My company is a General Contractor and we use the system for takeoffs to assist with budgeting and reviewing subcontractors quantities in hard bids. My estimating team and I have utilized both their on site training classes and virtual classes to help us become proficient. Every update has been a step to make this easier and smoother to use.

PROS

3D Elevations are what we utilize most as it helps show our clients their end product. We also love to show clients options for balancing their sites to help add value and savings.

CONS

I miss the sloping lines option that you could click points in a line and make them connecting spot elevations. You kind of still have this option but it's not as easy as it was years ago.

Reasons for switching to InSite Elevation Pro

Needed a better product

Vendor Response

Clayton, thank you for your review. The option to put in sloping lines did change a lot when the lines became more intelligent. The advantage over the old way is that editing the data is so much easier. I'd suggest signing up for Elevation Pro 101 (Select Help/3.Training) or look at Lesson 11. There is also another alternative where the line is put in and the Elevations edited. Lesson 23.06 covers this in detail.

Great for site work takeoffs

PROS

This software is my go to for takeoffs with a pdf or even a cad file. Super simple to use and very efficient and time saving once you get the features figured out. They have recently stepped up their game in upgrading and updating the software so i expect to see more and more features in the future.

CONS

Limited in the modeling from other software i have used. But as i said, they keep rolling out more features. I expect this to change as time goes on.

Vendor Response

Chris: Thank you for the review. Currently you need to have Field General to export models. This will soon change to allow BIM export and TIN models for simpler projects. More complicated projects (ex: roadwork with vertical curves) will still require Field General Office. Details will be available soon.

wanted items

I enjoy using insite, I really enjoy not having to use paper plans and a digi pad (old paydirt user) so that alone was huge for me, I would like to be able to get the cut/fill map in contours and I would like to be able to print it with the rock alert shown and the square footage of rock would be nice to know as wee. The other thing would be to get the lineal footage of a perimeter or subgrade, I do a lot of budgets and when I traced the subgrade of a building I need the footage for the foundation portion of the bid. Would also be nice to be able to calculate the slope of a basement grade up to the surface

PROS

ease of use, things are very intuitive to use. I can't imagine going back to a digi pad! love the screen takeoff and that we don't need a key anymore, can take my laptop anywhere and get a takeoff done

CONS

kind be kind of glitchy at times, I use a lap top that maybe some of my issues

Reasons for switching to InSite Elevation Pro

Coming of Age

My overall experience with InSite has been exceptional. The staff is courteous and helpful no matter how dumb I seem! I believe that renewing the license in full yearly is a deterrent and maybe consideration should be given to go to a yearly users fee like the competition. 3 or 4 years of this gets to be expensive.

PROS

The support staff is second to non. I should know, after not using computerized takeoffs for 13 years, it was trying for me as many things have changed. The stacking of subgrade select materials and the and the automatic contour assignment are great. The self drawing contour lines certainly is a timesaver also. Calculating select materials totals in each subgrade is handy also.

CONS

For me the job and section copy is difficult but I think it's just me. I have a hard time relating "subgrades" to layers like I am used to. While entering contours, there is a tendency for the line to go askew and attach itself to another line if they are in close proximity of cross due to drafting. More likely than not I have to correct that on my input.

Vendor Response

Kevin, thank you for your support all these years. The Job Copy tool is extremely powerful but can be confusing and is currently being redesigned. As for the contour issue, reduce the Vector Gap distance and if you have a layered PDF, un-select Active on all but the layer you are trying to import.

InSite Siteworks is great with room for improvement

InSite has been a pleasure to use and see implement new features over the years. I'm excited to see where they continue to improve. Support is also top notch!

PROS

Recent added features are excellent (i.e. cloud licensing). Subgrade from line-work is probably my most used feature that has been introduced in the past 3 years. It is a huge time saver! The reports are nicer, and being able to see the 3D model of the existing or proposed grades allows you to see if you made any input errors.

CONS

The way you can accidentally copy over a section if you aren't careful. I've done this once before and it was a time killer. Not being able to reassign a subgrade "section" a new number. Not being able to create a subgrade from an existing subgrade (i.e. creating a curb from using an asphalt outline with an offset). Not being able to edit the shape of an existing subgrade. Increase the number of strata levels allowed to be entered. The pipe utility is probably our least used feature and something we would use more if given an overhaul.

Vendor Response

Michael, thank you for your balanced review. Most of your suggestions are in our design goals and many of them will be addressed in the upcoming InSite Elevation Pro, which will be release later this year. You will get a prompt to download when it is available.

Great program

Program & online resources have been very beneficial & useful in site development, in terms of determining grading for proposed sites & while working with contractors to determine earthwork values. After using this program for the past 4+ years (originally digitizing contours on a hard copy plan set), it would be difficult to justify using another program. Very well setup & extremely helpful program.

PROS

The software has an easy to use interface, alot of useful tools to analyze & balance earthwork. The Live3D has been one of my favorite features to visualize the site, and to check for mistakes when digitizing.

CONS

One issue ive had is getting a good grip on using the line tracing, while inputing proposed grades. Outside of that, the program has very limited issues, given how simple & easy to use it is.

Vendor Response

Thank you Christian for the review. You may notice some proposed lines trace perfectly and some you need to adjust the gap settings. We wish there was a consistent "way" all lines were drawn, but there isn't. So we've provided some knobs to adjust. They are described in Lesson 8. Entering Grades, specifically 8.07 vector gap.

Add 3D Cut/Fill Heat Map

PROS

Provides 3D visuals to help understand the work required to get a site ready for building construction.

CONS

Having to manually select grade lines. If the program had the ability to 100% read and evaluate CAD files that would be incredible. Also, a 3D cut/fill heat map would be a great visual to show how much fill or cut is required in specific site areas.

Vendor Response

Tony, thanks for the review. It's really easy to import existing and proposed CAD layers into Elevation Pro. There is a great tutorial in Lesson 22. Generally if the lines are elevated it's a few mouse clicks. We wonder if you mean automatically make adjustment for demolition/stripping and subgrade adjustments. That is a process you have to define from the CAD or PDF linework, but it's as easy as we can make it, with 3D Live showing the subgrade adjustments. We'd also add that if that was possible the quantities provided by engineering firms would be useful....... As for the heatmap, we've gone beyond that with Cut & Fill contours. There is a video here: https://youtu.be/vtIqUTKpMOg The advantage is the original docs can be overlayed and this can be exported to PDF/KMZ Google Earth, etc. One thing that gets lost is the granularity of the contours is completely adjustable. The default is 1 foot contours, but some flatter sites will be best set to .5 or .2.

Elevation Pro makes this process simple by keeping the original aligned PDF open. Any subsequent PDF is aligned simply by selecting a point and then selecting that same point on the original. This is done a second time and takeoff from either drawing can be done. As many drawings in either PDF or CAD can be done in the same way. Easier shown that explained. CONS

PROS

The accuracy and speed of the tracing function has cut my grading takeoff time in half. This function shines brightest when using a cad file.

CONS

Aligning multiple PDf sheets to each other can be very time consuming.Insite used to have a feature where you could outline an area in the grading plan and it would tell you how much cut or fill was in that specific boundary. I found this to be very useful. I have not been able to find this feature since the update and wish it was still available.

Vendor Response

David, thanks you for the positive review. We are currently working on that feature, so help is on the way. As for Aligning PDFs, having multiple documents open to allow two point node based alignment makes Elevation Pro the best in class. Eliminated need for digitizer board. Stacking sub-grades. Copying surfaces and layers from one section to another.

CONS

During CAD import, inability to break poly-lines into segments or combine multiple line segments into one continuous line.

Vendor Response

Stuart: Thank you for your review. In CAD Import, under Options/Polyline Conversion, make sure the check box is selected and set a tolerance of .01 or greater. Also, please watch video Lesson 17 Advanced Contour Editing. Or just call us and we can show you!

PROS

The new proposed grades is much easier and faster then the previous version. The Slopping Line feature makes outlining curbs much easier

CONS

The boring log. It doesn't seem to work well when you have the same layer type in different sections.

Vendor Response

Rick, Thank you for the positive review. We put a lot of work into the new lines selection tools and sloping lines and it's nice to have positive feedback. As for the boring log comment. I'm not sure I completely understand. When you have a minute, please call or email technical support so we can understand the issue better.
