Sage Estimating
Overall, i love the product and would purchase again. Recommend to anyone.
PROSThe software is very very customizable as far as formulas and detailing to your way of estimating. Links with other sage softwares and streamlines a lot of the process
CONSSome of the reports could be improved. And also a way to better customize reports and it would be nice to have customizable proposal report from within sage estimating. Also, some kind of bid manangement or request for bid within sage estimating would be useful.
Reason for choosing Sage Estimating
The way that it is customizable and formatted somewhat similarly to excel
Reasons for switching to Sage Estimating
Needed a better way to manage and create estimates.

Best general estimating system EVER
We had 4 estimators all giving the boss spreadsheets that looked completely different, and sometimes contained major math mistakes due to users messing up formulas. Now all the estimators spreadsheets are in the same format which makes it much easier for our chief estimator to review, and they have NO math errors. You cannot mess up the Calculations in the spreadsheet, because they are done by the database engine, not in formulas that the users can mess up.
PROSSage Estimating brings together the best of both worlds, a database of knowledge (pricing, formulas, Assemblies) combined into a powerful spreadsheet. Databases are good for storing data, but estimators need spreadsheets to modify and review their information in. The ability to adjust groups of prices by percentages on-screen is a priceless feature, by rolling the adjustments down into the line-items.
CONSThe Digitizer was replaced with eTakeoff that required a bridge program to interface the quantities with the spreadsheet. For our needs, the method of bringing back the measured quantity directly into the quantity field on the spreadsheet was better.
Reason for choosing Sage Estimating
Since I was a consultant for this product since 1992, no other systems were considered for the company that I am currently working for. There is no comparison to the powers of this system.

Estimating with Sage/Timberline
I know that the spreadsheet adds up correctly. This is key when it comes to bidding work. We have built our own databases, and use them quite a bit for concrete, masonry, and drywall.
CONSUpgrades with pervasive can be cumbersome. It would be useful if the download was something that could be pushed down to users. Granted right now I am behind on my upgrades because our IT department does not like to deal with the upgrades.

Pursuit of Excellence
I invested into my estimating toolbox and acquired my Estimating License in 1996. I have been a Sage Estimating Customer ever since. Being a single user puts into perspective the support service experience as I always felt that my business was the only business that mattered.
PROSHaving worked with much of the competitions to Sage Estimating software while working for General Contractors it has been easy to compare features and functionality. With a solid Audit Trail it is easy to review a projects work flow. Estimate reports are virtually unlimited in terms of formatting capabilities. Attaching takeoff graphics as well enhances the deliverable documents combining the Work Breakdown Structure it is very easy to communicate the scope of work to the client especially when they are not construction conversant. Support services are top of class as the platform the software is operated on has improved support services are required less and less.
CONSThere really is nothing negative that I can consider.

Sage is great, Business Reseller's not so much
Read the cons carefully on who you choose to be your sales person. The product itself seems decent.
PROSSoftware seems intuitive like RS Means, Bluebeam Revu, and Excel. Have not fully used the software so will adjust accordingly after use. Integration with eTakeoff is nice since hopefully it combines Bluebeam Revu and RS Means/Excel in one.
CONSHave not fully used the product due to Sage's Business reseller Sky-Line's level of service that is subpar. Their trainer did not show up to 3 schedule training events that I was waiting for nor did Sky-Line do the install. The trainer did state that Sky-Line did not put the order in for the databases that I ordered and supposedly they put in an order for the Any Time Learning which I also never received. Initially ordered the product on 9/28/2020 and now it is 10/29/2020 with nothing to show for. Resolution was made to cancel the Sky-Line/SkyDONTCare and I will find a trainer on my own. BLUF: Try Cassell Consulting instead as he seems like a decent guy and think one can purchase the product from him instead.
Reason for choosing Sage Estimating
Sage has the RS Means database which Procontractor told me they did but when time for implementation Gordian told me they dropped Viewpoint. Lately, from what I have heard Procontractor did just pick up RS Means data into their system.
Reasons for switching to Sage Estimating
Efficiencies in the takeoff and estimating platform hopefully.

Bid Grid no good
Good.
PROSThe ability to make numerous alternates and locations.
CONSThe way Bid Grid works. There needs to be a way to add/remove items from the Bid Grid without having to start over every time. Very frustrating on bid day when you have multiple subs you have to re-enter. eTakeoff does not bridge to Estimating, concept of ding takeoff first before putting scope into estimate is backwards.
Reason for choosing Sage Estimating
Value for the money.
Reasons for switching to Sage Estimating
Fewer calculation errors.

Keep all of your estimate and bid information in one place
This program lets us keep track of all of our estimates, bids, and other information in one fairly easy to use place that our whole team can access it. It has some great interactive tools to help build and share your estimates with clients, contractors, suppliers, and others.
CONSThe customer service on this product is the one thing that I absolutely have to mention. We have had some issues come up in the past and it seems that getting in touch with the right person can be a chore in and of itself. Once you do get through to that person you have to hope that they understand your problem well enough to assist you. I hope it's only us who have experienced issues with this, but I would not be honest if I didn't mention it here.

Error free, but long processing times.
This product automatically saves after every key stroke, and the built-in formula's never make a mistake.
CONSThis software is often very slow to respond (drag and fill commands can take several minutes to complete, and trying to insert rows into an estimate can be tricky). There is also no quick or easy undo button in case the wrong command or key is pressed.

Recently, I was tasked to upgrade the Sage Estimating from version 15.1 to 17.13.
Version 17.13 uses Microsoft SQL Server instead of the Pervasive database which is basically a file system engine. Overall, the product is pretty easy to install and configure. I was able to quickly set up the environment to allow the users to migrate all the existing estimates over. The documentation are clear and precise.
CONSPermissions assignment to individual estimates is by user only. For example, you can grant a user permission to view or edit estimate A, but not estimate B. It will be more convenient and efficient that we can also assign permissions by global group as well, specially for big companies that have over 1000 employees.

Opinion of a long time user
I do all my estimating for bid work and negotiated jobs on the software
PROSI have been using it since version 2.0 in dos with monochrome monitors. It is easy to use and modify even for the novice computer user. But can be as complex as you care to make it. The ability to copy estimates so i can make modifications during the design phase of a design build without loosing the original estimate.
CONSyes, setting up simple and complex takeoff packages with variables can be a little bothersome.

The most dynamic
Sage estimating software allows companies and their individual users to literally make exactly the database that perfectly fits their needs. The only limitation is their ability to create tables, variables and formulas that will create the outcomes that they desire.
PROSTotal control, flexibility, and no "canned" locked in formating. Adding, changing and maneuvering existing data is made easy with "Database Manager".
CONSThe biggest con is the cost per user and the maintenance fee. Smaller companies can manage these cost with two or three estimators but larger world users such as cost consulting firms with large numbers of users find the initial investment and sustainability are over the top.

AVI Inc - Review
I like that it has more options for reports, forms, and queries than QuickBooks. Also, the program links between different areas of accounting and production, like work orders to invoicing and purchase orders. It performs well with Job Costing as well. I also like the functionality and organization that Sage Contractor provides.
CONSThe customer support is too expensive for the limited support we are granted. We pay for an outside consultant as well, who assists us more with the program than the customer support we sometimes get. It is also very expensive to add users, especially as a smaller business that does a lot of volume.

My Estimate Backup
When I dive into an estimate, Sage Estimating helps identify all scopes and pricing that i need to present to a client for an accurate future budget.
CONSSome items are buggy and I'd help if I can edit my tool bar for only the items I use. Lastly, is importing into Google drive excel spreadsheet which is very specific but we use that between the client and ourselves.

Teaching Sage to the workforce
Sage's Timberline Estimating allows more flexibility in all aspects of estimating. From building specific items to substituting items, working with smart assemblies, and modeling, there is no other system that I have used that lets me customize the materials, subcontractors, and crews the way Sage does. The support received from Sage is top-notch.
CONSThe upfront time in loading in and customizing the database consumes a lot of time. Once in place, the time savings are incredible!

A must use software for construction industry !!
Estimating project while bidding this software is a great help. It has does estimate exactly 90% - 95% of the actual budget of the project. But, depending upon the level of detail calculation you do, It has almost everything you need for estimating. Easy to learn and get used to it. the only draw back is the user interface, I would enjoy to use it more if the made it look a bit more organized and neat. Still, a must use software for the construction industry.
