Agrxis Review on Codemagic

5

I've generally been pleased with my interactions with Codemagic. By automating the build, test, and deployment procedures, the platform has assisted me in streamlining my app development process. My processes are straightforward to set up and manage because of the user interface's clarity and usability. I also value the degree of customisation that is offered because it enables me to modify the platform to suit my particular requirements. Every time I have a query or run into a problem, the support staff is likewise incredibly accommodating and helpful. Overall, if another developer is searching for a solid and effective CI/CD solution for mobile apps, I would heartily recommend Codemagic.

Pros:

I adore Codemagic so much! The simplicity and use of this platform are what I value most. I don't have to spend a lot of time configuring a CI/CD pipeline using Codemagic for my mobile app development projects. The platform is incredibly adaptable and supports both iOS and Android app development. The program also offers real-time feedback on the building process, which aids in my ability to spot and fix problems or faults as they arise. The customer service is also excellent and quick to respond. Overall, Codemagic has greatly streamlined and simplified my mobile app development process.

Cons:

Thus far, my experience with Codemagic has been very positive and I have not encountered any issues or concerns.

codemagic - A magically quick way to ci-cd!

Functionality

Pros:

Constant, quick, great support by the team, especially from \[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] in bringing the ci-cd to life for our product.

Cons:

1\. Not so obvious things like - encrypting the jks file. 2. Obscure and scattered information in the doc on certain parts of integration information like android-signing info being very distantly placed from the actual content. 3. No clear - complete example on certain customised implementations like environment specific release.

Reasons for choosing Codemagic

1\. It offers great integration to communicate the build steps 2. Saves so much development time by greatly reducing release hours spent. 3. Easy to integrate 4. Great performance 5. Offers great control and customisation for flavour-driven app environments. 6. Simple language to write the script (with code validator on the codemagic portal) 7. Great support from the team while the builds were stuck due to unforeseen reasons. 8. Good documentation on the integration and project-setup + linking with repository. 9. Secure way of establishing the connection for releases.

Mobile app hardware limitation

3

i Had made atleast 250+ build request and no doubt for time management this is unbeatable you do not need to wait in queue for long even you have free tier . Codemagic gives default installations of jq like tools which help us to save time in installing it every time plus cache service for add more option in default tools.

Cons:

IOs code signing and slack support. the codemagic have very poor documentation for code signing they should given more example and help in code signing process . like i use gaming laptop i dont have ios and now i need ios app ipa file not to upload on appstore but for me to check max size before deliver. i should not need developer account for this . i can do it with xcode and so i can do it with mac cli rather then doing changes every time i can automate it but no help for that while there is appcircle ci/cd which provide their code.

Functionality

Pros:

All options in the UI for build configuration, have a help icon that takes you to their documentation. Their documentation quality is accurate, up to date and always helpful.

Cons:

I did experience wildly varying build times for ios/xcode. When you are paying out of pocket and the build times aren't consistent it makes you wonder. This has seemed to have gotten better, more consistent lately.

Reasons for switching to Codemagic

Bitrise support, on the free tier, was in a word lousy. They didn't answer questions timely, even the login and registration with them was painful for me (hotmail address?).

Vendor Response

Thank you so much for your kind words! Feedback like this keeps us going. At times, builds times are dependent on the Apple side as they have their own app processing time management which results in timeouts most of the time. However, we have just released a new feature about Introducing App Store Connect Build Post Processing. Please do join our Community Slack (https://slack.codemagic.io/) to learn more about this. If you face some other issues, please let us know specifically by providing build links, so that we can look into them.

Cons:

That there are only 500 free minutes per month. Having 700 minutes can help me survive for my projects. (I am grateful for the current free tier)

Reasons for choosing Codemagic

Early provider of CI/CD for Flutter. Extremely easy to follow guides and set up pipelines for common use cases. A lot of articles from the community to create complex workflows

Definitely recommend for Flutter Developers

5

I love the app. I have deployed, run tests for all my projects and applications on Codemagic. It's really fun and simple to setup and use. I would highly recommend it to every mobile developer, especially to the Flutter developers.

5

Functionality

Pros:

It's really simple to use. The UI is super friendly, and anyone can deploy their app without even having a pre-knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps.

Cons:

I use the app for both Flutter and native iOS(Swift) programs, and pretty much all of my needs are satisfied. However, I'd like if Testmagic was brought back with a feature that allowed installation of .ipa files on iPhone or the iPad.

Reasons for switching to Codemagic

Travis CI is also the best in CI/CD field, but Codemagic is the perfect groove for Flutter Developers, as it specifically handles all the needs a Flutter developer would need, right from encrypting personal tokens, to deploying the product to Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Automating deployment of a multi-tenant whitelabel Ionic app

4

The time between code in a PR to an actual testing APK or IPA on is very short now. And also doing a production deploy for any of our whitelabel clients is really a breeze. During the setup phase Codemagic support was also very responsive and helpfull.

4

Functionality

Pros:

The product was really easy to set up. Coming from an environment where we had little experience with setting up a CI/CD for a mobile app it was really easy to configure automatic deploys to TestFlight and Play Console.

Cons:

Coming from Nevercode, the predecessor of Codemagic it was a bit of a shame that we lost the ability to do configurations in a webapp. Having multiple build configurations from the same repository to different TestFlights and Play Console it would have been easier to be to set all the keystores and certificates in a webapp. This only seems to be the case for Ionic apps though.

Reasons for switching to Codemagic

When taking over an existing Ionic codebase it proved very difficult to get all builds and the automatic deploy working. Switching to then Nevercode was so much easier.

Super easy to use

Our mobile app is the core of our business and I'm very happy I decided to use Codemagic. It simply works, offloads the boring parts of CI/CD and does so while looking great.

4

Functionality

Pros:

I love how easy it was to set up and use. Codemagic did a great job at automating all the time consuming parts of CI/CD, you don't need to scroll pages of documentation to do what you want, just configure it in their nice and intuitive UI.

Cons:

I would like to have the ability to restart a failed build. It is very rare, but once I had a build fail because of some networking issue while publishing to Google Play Store and it would be nice to have a button for restarting it.

Reasons for choosing Codemagic

It supports Flutter out of the box, no configuration needed, just point it to a repo, setup keys for signing and it was working in no time.

Vendor Response

Kuddos on your kind words. We cannot add the ability to resume failed builds due to some reasons. The most basic reason is that after a user fixes the error we cannot guarantee that the fix did not break the previously passed steps. Therefore, it is not feasible to start a build from where they failed. In this kind of case, we suggest you downloading binary and running them in yout terminals for that. Happy building!

Pros:

Codemagic is relatively easy to set up and their how they've structured their free tier makes it easy to test it out I also like that they support putting the workflow set up as code and store it with my code in the repo

Cons:

I haven't seen a great way to create encrypted variables when I want to include them in my codemagic.yml file. I have a work around of setting up a workflow and then exporting it to a codemagic.yml and copy the pieces I need from it

Reasons for switching to Codemagic

Because of how the free tier is structured. With Bitrise they have a 30 minute limit on builds and they would sometimes time out
