ConnectWise Automate (Formerly LabTech) Software


 

ConnectWise Automate (Formerly LabTech) is a cloud-based and on-premise IT automation solution that helps companies track and manage IT assets from a single location.

Content management features allow users to share documents and publish content on their website. These features can identify and fix bugs and errors to help decrease website downtime. The solution provides remote monitoring functionality, which enables users to manage desktops, laptops and devices on their network and monitor device performance using a unified dashboard.

ConnectWise Automate also offers network administration, which helps users to identify and repair faults, configure services, improve uptime and track server performance. Technicians can troubleshoot issues remotely and work on multiple systems at the same time without interrupting the end user. The solution allows users to define which patches should be approved, when they are to be installed and how the agent should react in case of a reboot.

The security module allows users to manage antivirus, anti-malware, email protection, encryption, password and patch deployments from a single solution. Support is provided through an online forum, email and phone.

Powerful and robust remote management software

Pros

Very powerful and can perform just about any function needed given that you know how. Techs must take caution that learning this is a beast and your job could end up being managing this software full time since there is so much to it.

Cons

It can be very time consuming to get your feet on the ground with Connectwise Automate which can suck up most of your free time and transform your job.

This is an amazing piece of software, but for it to be most effective you need someone that has time to administer it.

Pros

Labtech has a ton of great functionality right out of the box. Lots of custom alerting and monitoring sets. It will allow you to completely automate patches and updates from Microsoft. A great built-in remote support tool with screen connect. It has integrations with Connectwise, i.t.GLUE, BrightGague Reporting and more. The possibilities are endless with labtech if you know Powershell and some basic scripting.

Cons

It does take quite a while to get all the bells and whistles on Labtech up and running well. There is an amazing amount of automation you can do with it, but you really need someone that has time to build it. It can be almost a full-time job depending on your business. Much of the scripting and time-saving capabilities will be lost unless you have someone who knows how to write PowerShell commands.

Pros

Seamless PSA Integration, Scripting and automation. Pricing is moderate. Can provide customers with valued reporting and upgrade recommendations based on built-in reporting capabilities.

Cons

A lot of bells and whistles that I don't use. You have to pay for it as well. Uses MYSQL in the on premises implementation.

Once the product is configured correctly, maintaining is easy. This software can be used to manage and deploy updates, run installations, manage and monitor workstation and server resources. Provides remote capabilities for viewing running tasks, services, and event logs.

Cons

As mentioned in the Pros, once the product is configured CORRECTLY. Just looking at the interface, it is difficult to discern where things are, and what they do. My company had to pay a professional to come teach and help configure our deployment.

Clients and Locations are organized in an easy-to-view tree, which allows easy access to a customer's inventory.

Several dataviews are available from a Client or Location to quickly gather information of an environment. For example, a list of 'scheduled tasks' configured on every system can be gathered from all systems to determine why a particular event occurs every Saturday at 4am.

Remote Control of a system can be envoked with standard tools such as VNC or RDP, as well as ConnectWise Control (formerly Screen Connect).

Reports of client environments are just a click away, whether a question regarding system health is of issue, or if all systems have the latest patches and Anti-Virus updated.

Cons

Software runs on a MySQL backend, but only on Windows. Keeping MySQL tuned properly for environment size can be chore, whereas DB Engines such as MSSQL are a bit more automated and forgiving. As you bring more agents into the system, it's a good idea to run performance metrics on the MySQL server to see if any adjustments are necessary to maintain best performance of the system.

Telephone Support for the MySQL backend tends to yield different answers from each representative you talk to, and in my experience it was best to use general MySQL tuning documents that are available from Oracle.

I love the new interface, and I'll be very happy once it is rare that I have to use the old interface at all. It is very powerful, but for the basic tasks I do multiple times a day, it is still intuitive. I love the integrations not just with ConnectWise Manage, but with the other systems we use.

Cons

Like any RMM, it will take months to get everything configured, and it won't always work like you expect it to.

RMM, Scripting, Easy MSP setup and management of our clients systems.

Pros

If you can imagine it, you can do it. It really does have all the tools to do whatever you desire remotely. You can access almost any aspect of a managed machine without even interrupting the end user. The built-in ignite monitors are pretty amazing on their own.

Cons

It can be incredibly slow at times, you have to have a lot of patience. The script editor being object and mouse based is very clunky, I'd prefer to learn the syntax and just type it all out, but that option isn't readily available in the GUI you have to dig into the guts to do that. If you use ignite monitors you'll need to parse out the noise they create for items you don't want to be notified about. Integration with Connectwise Manage is still a bit quirky but it works.

Pros

It's a great tool for remote management. You can get so so many information from their connected devices. Also the reports you can get from the dataviews are Excelent

The new interface version is slower than the previous one. Seems simpler but you spend more time trying to find the features and commands

After using a lot management tooling, I'm now using ConnectWise Automate (former Labtech). Monitoring, manage, implement manually or thru scripts, almost everything is possible with this software.

Cons

Setup is easy with their support, but getting completely up and running is a differnt story. Especially in small IT companies where maintaining this software is just very small part of your job it sometimes getting complicated. Adjusting reports can be improved. A simple report where you select the begin and end date in the past is not possible.

We were able to monitor not only our servers and other networking equipment, but all user laptops and desktops. This keeps the team on top of server and laptop issues to make our employees more efficient at their jobs.

Pros

The depth you can set up alerting and monitoring is really great. The workflows you can create are endless and make process flow more efficient.

Cons

Isn't very intuitive. Forces you to go to their university training site which isn't as helpful alot of times.

Pros

Compared to our last platform we used, this has allowed our company to be much more proactive in regards to support requests. The automation of mundane tasks has freed up our engineers to be more hands on in other areas of the business such as project work now that things like patching are off their plate.

Cons

The newer UI has been a bit more cumbersome than before and has taken some trial and error for everyone to figure out things that were more intuitive previously.

Before Automate/Labtech 12 the best thing about this software was being able to see, at a glance, all the information you needed about a particular managed computer. They are moving back in this direction it appears. The scripting and monitoring systems are robust and allow you to do pretty much anything you can think of.

Cons

The GUI update that came with version 12 is not good. It uses a bunch of giant squares to present information and you have to drill into each one to find the specific info you are looking for rather than the at-a-glance experience I had before. Support leaves something to be desired. Just starting to chat with someone there can take 45+ minutes, then the person you are chatting with does not have the knowledge to fix the problem so you have to open a ticket anyway. Lots of time wasted there. Furthermore sometimes the inexperienced technician will offer suggestions to resolve the problem that have nothing to do with the problem which underlines the fact that they do not understand the problem.

I love the reports and information it gives me about each PC. It is also much faster to install SOME programs though LabTech because it will push it to every PC.

Cons

The lack of things actually working. Many items are setup and do not work or do not work the way that Labtech says they will. The software doesn't really work on Mac's even though they say it does.

Cons

This software's scripting engine is hands down the best. I recently saw the new interface that is coming to align the product more with Connectwise's main product is really nice looking.

Cons

Many of the terms do not make sense (blacklist software, means you want to know if it gets installed, meanwhile blacklisted services mean you want to be alerted if it's not working). The old interface was dated but it had the functionality and details all in one place. The current version 11 interface is horrible. Getting support on the product is awful; slow response and frequently being told that whatever you ask about is out-of-scope.
