It works. It does a lot of you're willing to pony up. I'm just not impressed with the backend at all anymore. It's powerful but couldn't it be a little friendlier? Ratings Breakdown 4 Ease of use 5 Value for money 5 Functionality Pros: Creating a download using Easy Digital Downloads for WordPress is in fact easy to do. Add a download, set a price, limit stock, add tags and categories if desired, hit publish. There it is. However, see below. The free version does allow two payment gateways: PayPal basic and Amazon Payments. Any site owner other than a hobbyist will want to upgrade. There are a myriad of integrations and extension for making EDD more powerful and lots of support from dozens of companies. EDD is the standard are there are no lack of solutions. Cons: I've yet to have a client who understood the relationship between the set up on the backend and the results on the frontend. Most can create downloads and then wonder, well, now what? The Now What? is definitely for WordPress pros because the plugin, curiously, has no onboarding of any kind, no tooltips, no inline documentation. It's kind of up to the user to figure out WTH is going on. Such as, how does anyone buy anything? This confusion is good for WP implementers like me but it seems a little primitive considering some of the sophisticated onboarding systems plugin authors have been able to build recently. Also, all the extensions and their interactions can get confusing. And very expensive. The Personal Pass, the cheapest subscription, is not cheap. But overall it's worth it to use for Medium scale businesses. But it also depends on your business strategies. Reasons for choosing Easy Digital Downloads Gumroad is direct alternatives to EDD. Because it has much convenient to use compare to EDD. As, EDD relies on WordPress you will find lots of issues like Speed, Security, Updates etc...but in GumRoad these are never happen. But in Gumroad you can't customize your store freedom like in EDD. Like Design, Email Integration, Customer Management, etc... Reasons for switching to Easy Digital Downloads WooCommerce is more likely for Physical products like Clothing, Bags, Electronics....Yes, it has the Digital Product options but the management for the Digital Product is a quite terrific experience for us. Cons: easy digital downloads is a software that lets you create and sell digital products but if you look at how the whole checkout experience is built and works from the customer point of view then you'll easily see that the makers totally forgot about the most important part the checkout experience. On a scale from 1 to 10 the checkout experience is a 1 it's that bad. Furthermore, no cross sells and upsells engine that works well enough so that it can be used and the product upgrade feature also is very low quality. Not having the ability to design a great looking and highly converting checkout experience made us loose a lot of revenue over the years. In just a few minutes I was able to have a fully functional online store - all for free. As the store grew, and my needs evolved, it was easy to find add-ons that enhanced my store's functionality. Over time I've set up several stores with Easy Digital Downloads, and it has always been an easy process to get everything up and running. Cons: At first, I didn't like that I had to purchase several add-ons for things like my preferred payment gateway, email provider integration, and a number of other features. The thing I didn't like about that was that I felt cornered into using a certain 3rd party provider whether that was for email marketing, or payments, since I already spent money on an add-on to integrate with those providers. However, as Easy Digital Downloads has evolved as a company, their offerings have changed to provide their customers with all access passes, which gives us access to every product they offer. Now for one, very affordable price, I have access to all of their add-on plugins and don't feel like I'm tied to any one product. EDD offers a whole host of extensions, which causes the plugin to be extensible by design. We have taken advantage of multiple extensions to avoid the cost of building these things ourselves. But also, we have been able to further leverage the extensibility of EDD and build our own customizations to refine the buying experience for our customers. It's been a huge part of our business for 5+ years and I couldn't imagine trying to achieve the same results without the assistance of EDD (and their support team along the way). Having a pre-built solution for these two things is a huge win. Cons: Admittedly, several of our products are services and not in the realm of typical for EDD. This has presented some challenges in integrating with our back-end systems. But that also points to one of the amazing things about EDD, it's extensibility. All Access opportunities. The developers are always adding new things. I appreciate that they are looking at how to service customers. Cons: The shop setups aren't really that user friendly. Both for the administrator and for the customers. We've had to jerry-rig our site to work in the least difficult way for customers and we still encounter issues. Not having the ability to show categories, tags, or even have a search of the product has proven to be difficult to do. Also, I haven't found an easy way to set up coupons that allow for when you spend this amount of $$ you get this amount of a discount or even a buy one of this product get another of the same product free. Also, dropdowns to add products to the manual purchase on mobile-only show about 20 products. Makes it really difficult to do things while on the go. One other thing is that if we wanted to use our site to interface with clients that order prints, we wouldn't be able to use Easy Digital Downloads. We've had to use PhotoBiz instead. It integrated easily with most email solutions and payment providers and you can use off site storage for product delivery with no real effort. Cons: Customising the look and functionality needs some skills. You will need to have the top package with all the plugins to use it properly if you can't commit to the whole bundle don't bother. This is probably the only drawback - it might be better to only offer the full package as some users will be frustrated by the need to buy more bits when they get going.
