Excellent CAD Software

Switching a product line for concept to manufacturing was so easy. New designs could not be easier. I can not wait to try Alibre out for Automation Design projects in the near future.

PROS

Extremely easy to learn. Other than proprietary snag of Dimension Drawings of other similar CAD software, switching is easy, simply import the 3D object and re-create great dimension drawings for manufacturing and incorporate the changes/dimensions/GD&T with ease. From then on, updates and/or revisions of a part for manufacturing are so simple, it is amazing. I literally had a lot of fun learning Alibre Design Professional.

CONS

Recreating the dimensional drawing for manufacturing was the only thing that I could find missing in converting from other similar software's. This is simply a proprietary matter period.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

After trying out the 30 day trial, the choice was easy, go with Alibre Design Professional.

Reasons for switching to Alibre Design

Alibre Design Used Extensively on our Farm

My overall experience with Alibre Design Expert has been great. We really like the Sheet Metal option. We have a Plasma and Press Brake in our Workshop and when we export DXF files to our shop machines the end products are exactly what we expected. No surprises.

PROS

We were looking for a 3D Modeling program to aid in the development of specialized farm equipment. I had many friends use solidworks and constantly complain about the cost. Solidworks for farmers if a very expensive option. After spending some time researching 3D Model programs we decided on Alibre Design. We have been using Alibre Expert for over 7 years. What I can say is that its a feature packed 3D modeling software that I know can compete with higher priced Solidworks. I have shown my engineering friends Alibre and they are amazed how powerful it is. The thing with Alibre is that its powerful and precise.

CONS

Coming from AutoDesk 2D to Alibre Design was a challenge. Alibre has developed a 800 plus page workbook that is excellent to learn on. There also is abundant YouTube videos that come available daily. I'm Still learning and improving my design skills. If I used it everyday I probably would have mastered it sooner.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

Very Good value for the money spent. We also wanted to buy and own the product. We do pay the annual maintenance fee and therefore we keep getting the new in improved versions.

Reasons for switching to Alibre Design

Wanted to switch from 2D to 3D. Looked at many different programs but purchased Alibre Expert

Perhaps it will work for a hobbyists.

PROS

The Cons out-weigh the pros. The one pro being low cost. If decision were mine, I would be using Solid Works.

CONS

Under utilization of computer power and graphics cards. For all intents and purposes no ability whatsoever to manage project files, creating an impossible mess on your hard drive that you can't fix because it will break all of your assemblies and require hours of re-locating files in their new locations.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

Management wanted a low cost product. Alibre is a low cost product.

Vendor Response

Thanks for your feedback, Jason. It sounds like your primary issue is the current lack of PDM for data management. While many businesses are using Alibre Design today without issue, certainly some have higher data management requirements. To that end, we've been busy making a fully native PDM solution set to launch early 2024. That solution will solve each of the data management challenges you list above, and more. It will have Where Used, versioning, roll back, check in / out, locking, easy moving / duplication / renaming of files without breaking anything, really robust searching, and a lot more. We're looking forward to the release since this has been requested a lot, and we're very excited to be able to solve this market need some of our customers are experiencing. We hope that after you are able to use it, you might reconsider your rating if you find it has solved your issue. Cheers, Max Freeman CEO | Alibre, LLC

An excellent and modern tool for those who care to create with pleasure.

I used Alibre for professionnal tasks to fabricate real products, tools and machines, and for my personnal pleasure to create and illustrate dream fantasies. It is an easy and affordable tool in this era of digital creativity.

PROS

I am an old designer who worked on many cad programs like Autocad, Euclid, Applicon, Versacad, Solid Edge and of course Solidwork. I bought a licence for Alibre Expert in 2006 and upgraded to Professionnal in the same year. And I never left since then. I just feel home with Alibre.

CONS

Many customers used to ask for Autocad drawings final as-build documents and translating Alibre 2D drawings to Autocad has always been complicated, and I agree that this problem is not easy to solve.

Reasons for switching to Alibre Design

The excellent price and performance ratio.

My experience with Alibre Design Expert

Alibre Design Expert has been very easy to learn. The commands are very intuitive. I can easily and quickly turn an idea into a 2D concept, then extrude or revolve it into a 3D model. The learning curve has been very quick. Any time I've had a technical question, Alibre support has responded quickly. This product is allowing me to design complex assemblies that my customers appreciate. I made a great investment, and strongly recommend maintaining the support option for periodic updates.

PROS

The biggest selling point for me was this was quality 3D CAD software I could own. I have used Solidworks, Creo, OnShape, and AutoCAD all of these packages are subscription. To own and maintain Alibre Design Expert is a fraction of the cost of those rental packages. I use my Alibre Design Expert software daily, I have been able to successfully model everything I used to do with the more expensive rental CAD packages.

CONS

I have no complaints. I love the software, it serves me well.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

For a small start up business, Solidworks, Creo, and AutoCad were completely out of my price range. I strongly considered OnShape, but it was a subscription. Alibre Design Expert allowed me to own this software.

Reasons for switching to Alibre Design

I am a small engineering consulting company. I have used Creo and Solidworks at my previous job. I was planning on purchasing a subscription to OnShape when exploring 3D packages I could actually own, I cam across Alibre. I used Alibre trial and put it through the paces. I was very happy with what I was able to accomplish. So I made a good investment in my business with Alibre Design Expert.

Highly Recommend Alibre Design Expert!! No better Value out there!!

Excellent! Wonderful! Value and Cost Effectiveness are unmatched in the industry. I would be less productive and less profitable with any other Software. Alibre Design Expert allows me to make 3D Models and 2D Drawings for my Mechanical Design Project, that accurately communicates all the proper and relevant information to the many Machine Shops that I work with. Also, allows me to make excellent Proposal and Informational PDF files (3D and 2D) for my Customers.

PROS

Overall, it is very easy to use, and it works great. Allows me to make Excellent 3D Models and 2D Drawings. I often get positive comments on my Shop Drawings and 3D PDF Models.

CONS

Hidden Line Management in 2D drawing can be a real pain and cumbersome to manage. No option to set Annotation Text Colors and Leader Colors to be the same, by default. (Req'd by my Internal DWG Standards). 2D Drawings from Scratch are difficult. Easier to make a 3D Model and then Generate the 2D DWG. Can be slow, when you just want to make a sketch.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

I own the software. No Internet Connection Required to operate it. Can run it on more that one device. No Annual Subscription Fee. Very reasonable maintenance pricing. Outstanding Capabilities. Initial Cost.

Effective tool

The software works well for quickly trying out ideas and producing parts that can be manufactured. I use it for checking fitment of our product in different installation environments.

PROS

Easy to learn and use yet has the depth of features needed for advanced/complicated models and plans. The part and assembly modeling tools are excellent. The drafting/drawing tool is also good and makes it easy to create exploded views and link BOMs.

CONS

The 2D drawing program has some areas that could use improvement. Changing the part/assembly can cause some dimensions to lose their connection to the part and need to be redrawn. There is no way to duplicate a drawing using a different configuration of the same part/assembly. Occasional glitches can prevent the drawing from being reprojected and so the drawing has to be recreated.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

The option to purchase a permanent license made the software more affordable than the alternatives. The support subscription has been affordable and worthwhile because the developers are continuing to make improvements to the software. There is a good support community and user forum.

I wish I had switched to Alibre years earlier than I did

I have designed parts for motor sport applications as well as 'in house' commercial products and even a self build house project. I love Alibre.

PROS

The online tutorials make self tuition very easy. Having switched from a very old and uncommon 2D design package which had no functional similarity to Alibre I needed and utilised all of the tutorials. I praise thier clarity

CONS

There is nothing I don't like. Its a pleasure every time I have an excuse to have something to design.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

Cost initially then the quality of online support offered to a new user transfering from a very old 2D package

Reasons for switching to Alibre Design

Suppliers particularly machining companies hated my Velum 2D drawings which had no CAM set up value to them so everything ended up being redrawn adding both production delay and costs.

A Perfect 3d Cad for everyone

PROS

I like the simplicity of how to draw a 2d sketches and the parametrization of every measure, also with information on execel. Also I like a lot the script engine to manage repetitive task.

CONS

I think Alibre need a good pdm to manage better a project with many files, but I know in the next versio there'll be something about that

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

I choose Alibre because It's more easy to manage a big project

Reasons for switching to Alibre Design

Great CAD tool with value for $$$

PROS

Alibre design has the all the basic features for someone doing basic Product Design and System integration design. I enjoy using Global Parameters, Scripting and Configurations. Makes my designs modular and configurable. And, it has great Value for money!!

CONS

Alibre lacks easy integration with PCB / Electronics / Electrical Design software.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

We had files and designs from a Contractor who used Alibre. The pricing was very attractive.

Great affordable software

PROS

Alibre is a very powerful 3D drafting software that handles simple to complex parts and assemblies well. Performs like a much more costly piece of software.

CONS

The 2D drafting is a little lacking, but workable. Creating a drawing is easy, but customizing it can be clunky.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

The main reason for choosing Alibre was the cost. The ability to work closely with KeyShot was also a bonus.

A good product that keeps getting better

Overall my experience with Alibre Design is excellent. It is an affordable and capable mechanical design tool that I intend to keep using for the foreseeable future.

PROS

I have used Alibre Design in its most capable version since the very early 2000's and find it quite adequate for my needs. I have a limited budget and although the scripts/automation of some operations found in more up scale products are useful and convenient they are also expensive. I would rather spend the extra time to manually do these things than spend the money for automation. Similarly some of the more advanced functionality would be nice but I rarely have need of those sorts of things and can usually find a work-around. FYI- I am a machine design engineer with decades of experience and in the past I have used both Solid Works and Solid Edge in the most capable version available at the time and each for a period of years. During the periods where I used different design software I also used Alibre Design concurrently for personal projects.

CONS

Over the years Alibre Design has continued to expand its capabilities and the increased functionality is always welcome. However this has come with a slight decrease in stability. A decade ago I could count the number of software crashes in a year on the fingers of one hand, Now it's more like 1-3 times a month. Not all that bad but could be better and there could be a more robust recovery capability.

Reason for choosing Alibre Design

Value. The cost/benefit ratio beats the competition while meeting or exceeding all my capability requirements.

Good software, good experience, good price, good communication.

For us, everything starts with the solid model. We can't meaningfully do anything, from costs to processes, without modeling first. Alibre gets the job done.

PROS

Alibre is a reasonably full featured 3D modelling system that equals most of the functionality of much more expensive and well known modellers at a much more approachable price, particularly for small and medium businesses or private individuals. Note that I said it equals MOST of the functionality--Alibre does not have CFD or FEA packages as many of the Cadillac systems do. On the occasions wherein we need those operations, Alibre does a fine job of exporting common CAD file formats that will import into CFD or FEA software without issue. With that said, Alibre covers all of the other bases for parametric modeling in a reasonably easy to learn environment that is fairly efficient and has a good workflow.

CONS

I mean, you can get down in the weeds and nitpick anything to death pretty easily. I have had my share of requested changes filed with the Alibre devs, but overall Alibre has be steadily improving for years. Overall, Alibre does a great job.

Reasons for switching to Alibre Design

Alibre had 95% of the same functionality for much less money, and communication with the company is much better. We also found that, once we got used to the new product, Alibre was a bit faster.

Alibre represents a great "bang for the buck".

After using IronCAD, Alibre, and Solidworks (for my previous employer) for many years, I had to pick only one to use for my business. I sampled the latest IronCAD (Triball is amazing!), Autodesk's Fusion 360 (requires annual subscription), and Alibre before choosing Alibre Expert. I may have chosen otherwise if cost was no object but I don't design things every day and paying many thousands of dollars for a program just didn't make sense. Overall, I am glad I have Alibre. If you already know Solidworks, Alibre will be very easy to learn.

PROS

Alibre is very easy to use, and technical help is always readily available, whether within the users' forum or directly from Alibre. I use Alibre Expert which is reasonably priced, and you do not have to purchase the maintenance package. The latest version includes text embossment and engraving wrap which really comes in handy for some of my products.

CONS

Of course, there are features in Solidworks that are not yet available in Alibre but then again, a Solidworks license is far more expensive.

It has been a good relationship, but Alibre isn't keeping up with the competition.

PROS

I started on Alibre when it was free. This was so long ago, our office still had dialup modems. I parked in a hotel parking lot and used their internet to download my first copy. It has reasonable capability compared with other similar tools.

CONS

The cost is starting to exceed the capability compared to other similar products like SolidWorks. We will likely switch at the beginning of our next big project.

Excellent product

We have found quite a few uses for the product. We have modelled control cabinets, 3d pdf and present to our customer. It works excellent in this respect. It is great for laying out a panel, or in house machined part. You can model the physical design with confidence. It also works excellent for collaboration with customers. It is also very favorable with 3d printing.

PROS

It was difficult at first. We initially purchased in 2004. Performance has improved dramatically since it inception. The geomagic move almost drove us away. After geomagic, it appears that Alibre found its home as a good player in the 3d modelling and cad realm.

CONS

I still have a few issues with sketching, not really as intuitive as I would like. It has also improved quite well. Works fine on MACOS using parallels.

The ultimate design tool

I use Alibre to develop a new king of industrial instrument that measure gazes in open and closed systems. I use a lot the configuration feature. Also, I use it to design test fixtures with aluminum extrusions and design wood work for home. It is my central tool in all my creative activity.

PROS

I adopted Alibre Desing many years ago after having tried many others. What made the difference is the short learning curve. I design a complete first draft of my project in 3 days. This was very convincing, almost addictive...

CONS

It would be nice to link certain parameters to the configuration name. When using extrusion with different length, I write the length in the name of the specific configuration. During development it can happen that I change the length but forgive to change its name. This would ensure the in integrity of the data.
