Altium Designer for an Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering Undergraduate
As an engineering undergraduate we have to design lots of printed circuit boards. When I am using Altium designer I could easily design foot print according to the component I chose to use. In altium designer we can easily import the changes we made on the schematic . If we did any changes on the PCB design layout which are not on the schematic those changes also can be export to the schematic. We can customize the design rules such as track width, pad sizes, clearance and etc as we needed. That will help us to have the perfect PCB. When its comes to routing, auto-routing option in the altium is perfect. We only need to adjust routing rules according to our work then altium will do the routing part. We can easily generate files that are need to print PCB for an example if need to generate gerber files we only need to go the option that let us create gerber files and select the required layers and formats.
CONSIf you are new to PCB designing it will be little bit difficult to learn altium at the first place with the time we will get familiar to the altium designer. If you looking for footprint for free in online sources it will little bit difficult.

Review Altium designer from electrical engineer
Easy to use and well documented. I like the video that show how to use the software. Also, almost all companies we are affiliated use Altium, so make it easy to integrate.
CONSCouple of bugs here and there. I wish the vault will have more components. Otherwise good.
Reasons for switching to Altium Designer
We needed to do rigid Flex design, and Circuit studio was not make it.

Altium Designer is advanced PCB designing tool.
Overall Altium is one of best PCB design software I've ever used.
PROSAltium Designer has thousand of advanced features to design PCBs. I really like the ability to make files of the PCB to send online PCB manufacturing service . Altium supports 3D view and we can clearly see how to fit PCB on my CAD design. Altium has thousands of flexible design rules and auto routing options.
CONSAltium has few bugs when exporting designs. instead of that default components library has only very few essential components. Even I find component footprints or library from internet I have to go through number of steps to add them to Altium every time.
Reasons for switching to Altium Designer
Altium support importing CAD file.

Altium Designer-It is the best I've used so far.
We recently solved high voltage clearance issues, differential signal routing issues, and 22 layers. Wow!
PROSEverything works. Most of it is self explanatory, and easy to find. Since I have only been using it for a few years, I've recently had to learn it. Given that I have used three of its competitors, I know a little about these platforms. Altium is far and away the best and most comprehensive.
CONSI would have to say that the complexity of the software, and its integration with schematics, BOMs, CAD, etc, make it more difficult to learn initially.
Reason for choosing Altium Designer
Reliability and comprehensive.

Altium Designer ''Friend''
I started with Protel 99, after I switched to DXP and finally to Altium Designer. The most important value of Altium is the continuous improvement of the feature, tooling menu, visualiazation 3D, multiboard experience.
PROSAltium is very simple to learn, very performant tool, easy to use and very precise and fast routing. I like the 3D mode, new features added into 3D mode viasualization. Very easy to perform design rules check. Tool is quite stable and crash are very very few. It is good to work with git repository and A365.
CONSIt is appreciated to add a PANEL FOR TESTPOINT management. We use a loto of ICT test point and the information in one side panel in real time is a VERY VERY important and accelerate the design of the boards.

Altium Designer Review from Admin perspective
Its a pretty strong tool that's backwards compatible with solidworks and other programs. Even at a basic level, it's very strong and easy to use.
CONSWhen maintaining a company component library, its difficult to revert components back to a previous revision. This was a single case for us when a user began making random changes on components without notification to the team, causing layout problems. That made it difficult for a quick reversion back to the working components.

Altium Designer
Have used for about 15 years and three companies.
PROSFull featured, fairly easy to use. Have always been able to do the things we need it to do. Has extensive scripting capability if you take the time to learn it.
CONSThere are some parts of it that are not great (signal integrity simulation, draftsman). You have to learn what is and stay away from the things that aren't.
Reason for choosing Altium Designer
Cost, and other tools seemed to do better with more infrastructure (e.g. dedicated parts librarian.)

Altium Designer Value
It includes quite a few tools in the package and so far has been meeting our needs for schematic and layout design.
CONSThe third party simulation tools do not pickup the Altium constraints. They have to be redone in these tools and it is very time consuming.
Reason for choosing Altium Designer
Lower cost and better tool integration. However, these benefits start to diminish as we get into the 12+ layer high speed designs.

A good tool for simple to complex tasks
My overall experience is very good; after some learning, you can be very proficient and the help system will help you to deal with things you still cannot do, making it very easy to learn new things.
PROSThe best thing about Altium is that there is very tight interaction between schematics and layout tools. The communication between the two environments allows you to easily implement modifications one way or the other, thus applying changes very effectively. Furthermore, the online help system is very effective, providing you an answer to almost all your questions.
CONSThere is room for improvement in track polishing, in the sense that too often pieces of tracks remain hidden underneath other tracks and make it more time consuming to clean up projects. I suggest a function which analyzes tracks and regenerates proper ones so that the outline of copper is maintained with the minimum number of elements. In addition, sometimes Altium does not seem to be able to understand at all what you are trying to do, both in schematics and in layout.

Altium - defacto standard, pricing inflation
Overall, Altium has helped push the industry forward. At it's core, it's a tool that does the job. However, as they've become more prevalent, the actual value they provide relative to competitors has leveled off.
PROSAltium has become a defacto standard in embedded electronics design. Every vendor, customer, and partner of ours has Altium Designer in their toolset. The product functions well enough for most required ee cad tasks.
CONSthe suite of products that you can buy beyond the standard schematic capture, layout, and routing, creates ala carte options that nickel and dime you to an annoying degree.

Impressions after 4 months of using Altium after PADS
It does seem to give more than PADS even that I miss some functions in PADS.
PROSComponents can be imported directly from cloud and internet with loader. It has many configurations to adjust basically everything, but sometimes can be a bit confusing.
CONSI have not been able to find how to highlight a net, so that it would be visible in both schematics and layout. Also when selecting a component in layout, it does not automatically go to correct schematic page, but I need to browse thru the pages to see, where the selected component is.
Reasons for switching to Altium Designer
Many simulation companies uses Altium better (like thermal simulation, mechanics etc)

Very User-Friendly Software
The overall experience was very nice for me. This is a great tool if you are looking to design PCBs, its very user-friendly and very easy to learn even if you are a beginner. I would recommend this to people who are also starting to learn PCB-Designing.
PROSThe thing I liked most about this software is it allows you to design and model PCBs and its very user friendly and easy to learn. Compared to other products out there in the market this is a great tool and the price is also reasonable.
CONSSometimes when you are trying to make your own components it's kind of hard to find 3D-Models for some components and also sometimes it has an error for placing components.
