About ODOP:Spring

ODOP: Spring is not only capable of analyzing the performance of an existing spring design but also best for developing solutions to difficult and highly constrained original design problems. ODOP: Spring offers a powerful numerical search capability that can seek the constrained extreme of any variable, independent or dependent. For instance, it can find the spring of least material weight, lowest rate, least solid height, greatest factor of safety, greatest cycle life, etc. while maintaining all the design objectives for force-deflection characteristics, stress, size, etc.

ODOP the best free Spring Design option

PROS

The first and most important element of ODOP is it is open source, on GitHub you can see all the work being done on the program and contribute if you have the ability. The second best feature of ODOP is it is entirely free, At the time of writing this I would say there are programs better than ODOP but one example I can think of is $1250 a year... Unlike other free spring design programs ODOP actually delivers most of the functionality of the excessively expensive programs without any of the cost. ODOP is still in development so I expect it will surpass most if not all the other spring design programs many of which do not receive updates anymore.

CONS

ODOP can be a little difficult to figure out at first, not everything is entirely straight forward and it is still in development so it is missing a few features that will likely come in the future.

Vendor Response

Brandon, Thank you for taking the time to provide this review. You have accurately captured much of the essence of where ODOP:Spring is today and even some of our hopes for the future. Your expectations of open-source software may include the notion of limited or expensive technical support. With ODOP:Spring, feedback from you and other members of the user community is very important to our development plans. For that reason SpringDesignSoftware.org provides free technical support. If you have any difficulties with the software or simply want to share a wish list of improvements, please reach out to us. See the Contact Us pages on the website or in the on-line Help. Software Evaluation

If you're only working standard compression, extension, or torsional spring, ODOP spring is a good option for designing a spring. If you only need the software for few spring design requirements a year, its especially hard to justify buying or renewing a license for any expensive commercially sold software.

PROS

I liked how the software would allow the constraint of specific variables, and the other variables could change in the analysis section of the software. Hence, your initial parameters were slow tweaked until you spring meet the requirements for spring life and force requirements. Upon completing a spring design, the results were compared to calculated results using standard spring formulas, and the software was spot on. We also compared to the results to another commercially sold spring design software, and we got similar results.

CONS

I wish the software included a list of standard wire sizes with material properties, so you could adjust your design to match a standard wire size. If your spring is cost sensitive, you need to stick to standard wire sizes. When compared to other commercially sold software, the ODOP only allowed for three types of spring, and the Spring Manufacturers Institute software offered the most.

Vendor Response

Adam, you are our first reviewer on Capterra. Thank you! Use the Action : Select Size menu to access a table of standard wire sizes. Version 4 recently introduced an optional "Calculator View" that integrates a wire size selection drop-down into the display of wire diameter. Your point about cost sensitive designs is an important one. The included "guidedDesign" tutorial explains how to optimize for minimum weight (material cost), select the nearest standard wire size and then perform one final Search to adjust variables like number of coils or coil diameter to compensate for that small change in wire diameter and still meet constraints on other aspects of the design. In order to better understand the needs of our user community, SpringDesignSoftware.org provides free technical support. If you have any difficulties with the software, please reach out to us.
