CostPoint Review

Value for Money

Overall, if you are in the government contracting industry, CostPoint is as reliable as a software as any out there. With its wide acceptance across the industry, it is a extremely useful software to be familiar with.

Pros

CostPoint is an extremely powerful and a widely used accounting software. One of its best features is the ability to accommodate a diverse set of accounting and financial needs and the innate ability to run seamless interfaces with other Deltek products such as T&E and Cognos. It's relatively easy to use and can be picked up by most users quickly.

Cons

Costpoint lags behind its competitor in the innovation it offers it's users and customers. They software updates are infrequent and often do not result in any major updates and upgrades. There are also many areas of functionality within Costpoint that seem to be offer duplicity and could be improved.

I would never recommend this system. Build your own T&E system before investing here.

Pros

It works, most of the time. That is all I have to say, because everything else is negative. See below...

Cons

It is not user friendly, very clunky system, and it is not intuitive in the least. You can barely put in your time without messing things up and trying to adjust time after a period closes is terrible.

This Software is a must have for any Gov't Contractor that wants to do business in this space

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Product Quality

Customer Support

Value for Money

Pros

The application is very powerful and very flexible which allows you to set things up for your business as simply or as complex as you would like. The ability to enter everything only once and capture all the data needed to properly allocate all of your Fringe / Overhead / G&A or Material & Handling Cost Pools is critical to being able to prepare DCAA / DCMA compliant Invoices, DCAA Disclosure Statements and Incurred Cost Submissions. Every module that you add on automatically links with the existing Accounting data so no extra steps are needed to get different modules to talk to one another.

Cons

Not always easy to tell if or when a patch is needed to update a specific module. Don't really know anything is needed until you run into an error message. Sometimes it is hard to update or patch just the application that is giving you problems because fixes can cover more then one application.

The Costpoint enterprise suite allows a complete set of tools that can influence critical business decisions in a vertical business. What sets this software apart from others, is the tools available to customize the software using Extensibility.

Costpoint is a dynamic system with many features that are automated. We use it for not only our accounting system, but also our budgeting and reporting. It is complex and able to do many things, but the right people must be in place to ensure the system works for you and is used to it's fullest. We are only using some of the capabilities of the system, and have only started to unlock all the possibilities of the system 2 years into implementation.

Software drills into the detail of each project and each labor. It allows you to have more thoroughly analysis of your project.

Cons

Kinda of over complicated to small/medium size company.

Value for Money

I just completed the demo of the Deltek CostPoint SaaS offering. The product looks great and would probably be of great help to my business, but is ridiculously overpriced. CostPoint is priced based on the number of employees. For 60 employees, I was told I would have to pay a high annual fee that does not include add-ons. NOTE: This is sold as a SaaS solution, but Deltek requires the entire annual fee up front. In addition, I was told that the setup, data migration, and training would be handled by a 3rd party via a T&M contract and typically costs 1.5 times the annual fee. This is not a solution for a small business.

Advice to Others

Stick with QuickBooks as long as you can.

Customer Support

Our company implemented a suite of products including Costpoint and Time and Expense approximately 3 years ago. After seeing applied changes and specific product roadmaps at Deltek Insight 2016, I'm excited about the direction of system improvements and enhancements to functionality and features that are either a reality now or coming in the very near future!

Pros

Web-based - accessibility anytime, anywhere. Ease-of-use over Oracle products I've used elsewhere. Customer support engagement through various channels.

Advice to Others

Make sure that you do an internal assessment of how ready your company is for change as this will facilitate knowing when it's a business process decision versus a system design or configuration topic (consulting hours are precious); dedicate resources for change management, marketing/communication and training and ensure that Executive Management is not only tuned in, but engaged throughout the process.
