StarChapter- A Website For Organizations

We have used StarChapter for our organization (ASHRAE) since 2012 and for our organization (AEE) for 4 months. ASHRAE has 1900 members and AEE has 250 members. To summarize, this is a fantastic Website for any any size organization. When you are a new customer you have a bunch of templates to pick from and Customer Support (CS) gives you personal attention to get your site set-up. There is also a package to fit just about anyone's budget. Setting up meetings and sending out mass emails of any type is a snap.

PROS

1.Great Great Customer Support. Inquires are replied to promptly and accurately. 2.Most of the features you use regularly are intuitive. 3.The software has so many features that anything is possible to do. 4.Members can pay by credit card in advance for meetings. 5.Once you are set-up and using it it is very easy to maintain. 6.You can assign different tasks to your board (like someone for announcements or emails or treasury, etc.). 7.Easy to post all event pictures. 8.CS sets your site up to your specific requests. 9.There are tutorials and live webinars on everything with a Help Center to search.

CONS

1.If you REALLY REALLY want to get into the nitty-gritty of webmastering it is not intuitive but if you are adventurous you can learn. CS will also direct you. 2.Their newsletter feature sucks. We get around that by producing our newsletter with adobe/word and posting it on our site.

Great integrated product

I've had a great experience with StarChapter.

PROS

BEST:An integrated website, membership database, calendar/event schedule, event registration.The ability for other admins with different levels of access. The knowledge base.The ability to design the page content and event emails using html or wysiwyg. Document storage for meeting minutes.Tech support is very helpful.Registration list viewable to attendees.

CONS

REQUESTS: #1 The ability to print out or pdf a professional-looking directory for those wanting to save it offline. #2 There needs to be a customizable .ics calendar-type feature that users can download once registered that includes the full description of the event, Zoom instructions, etc. #3 Include the calendar entries in the event list to have a single calendar and event listing. #4 In surveys, the ability to choose more than one checkbox option.#5 The ability to edit the Registration "receipt" template (and why is it needed if there is a registration confirmation template?)#6 The ability to incorporate meeting photo galleries in different parts of the website other than the home page slider. #7 Better sharing link to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. #8 A separate database section for business partner sponsors with access options.

It's just OK

There is nothing that stands out as something I like.I use it because for me there is no alternative.

CONS

It was not my decision. The decision was made by corporate, by (I suspect) people who will NEVER use this on a daily basis and who know nothing about the job of an Association Executive.

Easy to use, Friendly for everyone

I really have enjoyed StarChapter overall and feel it has greatly modernized our organization top to bottom.

PROS

We needed an online membership database that was easy to update and accessible for multiple users. We also needed a way to integrate our website content and registration events. StarChapter made all of that easy and affordable.

CONS

I do not like how all of the membership must have an email. Some of our members change emails frequently because of their job titles or retire and lose access to previous emails. That has made some of our communication and connections difficult.

Reasons for switching to StarChapter

The user interface was much easier and friendlier. I didn't need to understand basic coding to pull my active and/or expired membership lists.

Review of StarChapter

This has really brought our organization to a one-stop shop. We had files everywhere, and when people would drop off the board, sometimes we lost information. This allows us to keep it in one place and make the transfer easier for the Chapter.

PROS

It's a total package for our membership organization. It allows one program that can be easily transferred to the new board each year. No need to have separate files.

CONS

Some of the areas for managing the website are not easy to find, but once you have done it a few times, it starts to get easier. It would be nice to see what the regular member sees when adding items.It's hard to get everyone on the board together to train. Individual training is fine, but it is more beneficial together.It would be nice to have a calendar that members could pull up by month and see the upcoming events. And allow us to add events to the calendar that aren't specific to our chapter but interest our members.

Reason for choosing StarChapter

The use, the ease of transition, a website that was turnkey, and costs. We also want to be able to make upgrades to our website and technology evolves.

StarChapter Recap

We have moved several association over to SC and while not perfect, the platform has met most of the needs. Development group as been good to work with.

PROS

Being able to make essesntially any updates to the various web pages. Can add page as needed too. Nice having the Knowledge base with videos for those new to SC.

CONS

Group renewals. Members from the same company can't select all at once and make one payment. Can't calculate dues based on unit count: ie: 442 units x $1, 732 units x $1, 84 units x $1. Forum posts should have option to email out automatically and members should be able to reply back to the entire group or click/link to the person/email that did the posting.

Works well for general purpose use but starts to crack at the edges

Overall the experience has been mostly positive. I wish StarChapter would make more of an effort to incorporate a few small enhancement requests I've made, mainly allowing users to select the time zone of a meeting when setting one up.

PROS

StarChapter is easy to use once you get over the initial learning curve and there are a lot of resources provided to help with setup. Our website works well for most purposes and is easy to update and manage.

CONS

StarChapter does not seem to handle special use cases very well. Our organization spans several time zones but meetings can only be set in the time zone of the administrator. The platform cannot process payments from outside our country which creates some issues for us as well as people from Canada regularly come to our events.

Great platform with great support

Great! but like anything you need to stay on top of it and make sure your membership is clean

PROS

This is an easy way to manage membership and events. It's easy to make new pages and update content.

CONS

Some times changes you make to a page take a minute to hit the site or if you go back to make changes it will say its still being worked on (even when it's not) so you'll need to come back in about an hour.Also content that has been up for a while is hard to change. (still cant figure out how to change our address on the home page.

The previous exec selected star chapter. Once I learned the program I didn't consider changing.

User friendly

My overall experience with StarChapter is good, and it performs well.

PROS

The software is mostly user-friendly and customer service is quick to respond to questions.

CONS

Our use of StarChapter is not integrated into other applications. It would be very helpful to be able to use coupons toward membership dues for both new members and renewals. We give free memberships occasionally and would like to offer discounts to some students from time-to-time.

Functional but klunky

It keeps all of our members and non-members in one place, but it's really tough to build a decent looking event invitation with these klunky templates - communications do not look very creative.

PROS

Payments are pretty seamless, reporting is decent

CONS

NOT intuitive - difficult to build events (I feel stuck with an unattractive template) and we host monthly events, so this is tough to work around.

Choose StarChapter for a Streamlined, Easy-to-Use, Time-Saving Association Management Software

Before StarChapter, we had a website that we built and maintained ourselves. It was outdated and hard to administer. We used an email campaign software, an invoicing software, paid hosting fees, used a security software, and tracked attendees at our events in a spreadsheet — it was a bulky way of operating. Our organization looks so professional now! We were able to consolidate all our other systems into one which is such a time saver! I'm not sure we're saving any money, but the time, ease of use and professional image is worth it. I highly recommend that anyone in an association consider StarChapter. I couldn't be happier with a management software.

PROS

StarChapter has streamlined our volunteer organization's processes and saved each of us time — which is important as volunteers! It's eliminated the use of an email campaign system and invoicing system. It has streamlined our communication with the newsletter feature, and contacting members and non-members with the email templates makes our roles simpler. I love that each of our board members are learning how to maintain their own pages through StarChapter's Knowledgebase. Everything you need to know is in there and it's presented in a style that's easy to read, follow and understand. I've had to request support for a couple items that were more complex than what I could handle, and their support team has responded within a day or two to resolve the challenge.

CONS

I've been using the software for about eight months. I think I still have so much to learn — it's a very robust software — yet they do make it easy to use. I just wish I could dedicate more time to really diving in to understand the connections between the modules and how to maximize the software.

Reasons for switching to StarChapter

Fortunately our national organization partnered with StarChapter and offered to help us make the switch to promote a more consistent look among our regional chapters. They gave us three great templates to choose from and we ran with it from there.

Room to grow from Good to Great

We like the website front and back end management. We like the calendaring. We like event management, although it can be improved. The webstore is generally good, but would be much better with financial integration and a more standard order to ship process flow and functionality; i.e., bundling. E-mail communications are good; however, e-mail address flagging and rectifying is AWFUL, and we strongly disagree with StarChapter's interpretation of the regulations.

PROS

StarChapter offers good functionality and management for an affordable price. It puts our website and association management into the cloud, where it belongs, and doesn't require a high degree of tech savvy to manage the site or our day-to-day activity.

CONS

The lack of a financial interface is PAINFUL, and it has resulted in higher than usual external accounting expense to make sense of what we do.

Reason for choosing StarChapter

The combination of feature functionality and price The lack of integration with Quickbooks Online almost scuttled the deal. As we flirt with 900 members, that is a lot of extra work. SMDPA is an all-volunteer managed non-profit.

Reasons for switching to StarChapter

Our website [SENSITIVE CONTENT] of twelve or so years was burned out and done with it. We looked at a handful of options via RFP and StarChapter offered the best package of website and cloud based application management at a reasonable price.

Horrible customer service and glitchy system

Our onboarding experience was HORRIBLE! Zero support, zero expectation management, and the SC team linked our membership page TO THE WRONG WEBSITE > as in, visitors to our membership page were redirected to another chapter that is in our geographic area and is OUR COMPETITOR. When we let our customer service lead know and asked her to fix the error, she responded with a one-word answer - "done".

PROS

I thought we would like that it was an all-in-one solution, but even that isn't worth the headaches of trying to use it.

CONS

Too many pros to list here but this box is requiring more characters . . . it doesn't integrate with any other tools, the website design options are incredibly limited, outdated and stale looking. Check out their website and have a look at the one positive testimonial listed - if you visit that site, you will see they are no longer using StarChapter!

Reason for choosing StarChapter

I wish we had chosen otherwise! We will be ending our membership immediately and starting over with another solution.
