I love it

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

I've been using Nextcloud since v11-12, but before that had been using ownCloud since v5. It's a brilliant way of sharing files across multiple devices and sharing files with others. I was looking for my own version of Dropbox and Nextcloud fits the bill, and some. Some of the more recent Apps really could make this a complete solution, with the Collarora/Onlyoffice integration, Decks, Circles, Passwords, Email, Talk, etc. And it's open source. Like I said at the start, why not?

#### Cons

I'm not a fan of the new forum/support platform but am struggling to find something I least like about the software

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

Nextcloud offered more features and benefits than ownCloud.

It's a great piece of open source software with a ton of functionality. It is a great alternative to platforms like Google Drive or OneDrive.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

NextCloud is very easy to set up and allows a great amount of customization. There are a ton of apps available to add to your configuration so you can set it up just the way that works for you. You can integrate Nextcloud login with your own website using OAuth. The customization is almost endless so you can set it up just how you like it.

#### Cons

The pricing can become complicated and quite expensive when using Nextcloud with some paid apps. Other than that I can't really complain about the functionality of the software, it has everything it should have.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

GDPR, control over hosted files because Nextcloud is self hosted.

We use this as an Intranet solution in our church. The most important functions are booking of locals and for filesharing between groups. We also use PicoCMS for the internal communication of news in the organisation. It works as expected but there has been some resistance to change. We plan to set up social login which should facilitate the use. Setting up and keeping your own server is of course an obstacle. You need some computer and server knowledge to keep this running. We use an external VPS-provider for the production server and another for backup. A local NAS-server for testing. This costs us about 7 EUR/month.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

Easy to add new users Easy to upload and download files Possibility to read and edit documents also in the phone Possibility to add blogg-pages for intranet with the PicoCMS app Calendar app works very well Sync with laptop and desktop using the desktop client

#### Cons

The e-mail app is rudimentary The coupling between Contacts and E-mail app is incomplete Creating and editing documents and adding photos is possible in the phone but a bit slow The risk for conflicting versions if using desktop client, but this may be soved in version 18 as you can locck the file while editing You sometimes need to specifically check that the files are synced, but this also happens to me with other sync solutions (like Box Sync) The calendar app cannot be "swiped" or "scrolled" to the next week or month in the webb-browser. But this works with other optional calendar apps.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

As far as we could see G-suite and Office365 works best if all users are from one single organization and e-mail addresses from the same domain, whereas our users are individuals with private e-mail addresses from many different providers. We also found the setup and administration of Nexcloud very easy - adding users, setting up groups-folders, giving permissions, sharing files to external users, allowing upload and download to external users.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

Fronter was remaking their service so we needed to either reconstruct our service or change. We needed to set up a solution within a short time. Nextcloud was the only alternative to do that. And it has worked very well for almost a year now.

#### Vendor response

Thank you a lot for this detailed review!

### Not only for file sharing

- Overall rating: 4/5
- Reviewer: Stefanos K.
- Verified reviewer: Yes

- Company size: Self-Employed
- Product usage: Used daily for less than 6 months
- Reviewed: December 2020
- Review source details: This reviewer was invited by the software vendor to submit an honest review and offered a nominal incentive as a thank you.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

The core functionality, sharing files, is really easy to install and use. And there are tons of additional functionality to choose from (provided by Nextcloud itself and third party software developers). One thing worked out to be particularly useful: the integration with the Nextcloud provided meeting software Talk (although it works only for small meetings out of the box. For larger ones additional, but still free, software is needed).

#### Cons

There are really tons of third party apps to choose to install. And it is really tempting to add them. But this constitutes a weakness at the same time, because no one guarantees you that these apps will work with the next update of the software. And I've seen it in the past months that some apps I'd install stopped working with the next update. This is no problem of Nextcloud itself. They do not force you to install any of the third party apps. My advice would be to install only apps that have been along a long time and provide regular updates.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

Nextcloud seems to be more community oriented than ownCloud. I know that they originate from the same software, and Nextcloud split it self up at one point.

Nextcloud allowed us to replace many other services from different providers, now we have almost everything in one place.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

- simple to setup, configure, update and use - customizable - many apps and themes available - well documented - possible to connect with other services

#### Cons

- many features you expect to work by default are only available after installing 3rd party extensions - encryption can be difficult to setup - some features can be configured only from command line

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

Mostly because of community recommendations, it is also open source and seems to be actively developed, not only by its creators but also by volunteers. Now, after almost a year working with it, I am sure it was a good decision.

Great product that's useful to more than just business clients.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Clean and consistent interface with good integration due to lots of third party addons.

#### Cons

The installation process is disconnected between the CLI, and the "autoconfig.php", the supported features in the latter are far more capable despite the development focus on the former.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

More "open" development environment, and seemingly faster progress in areas that are more important to the general public rather than simply Enterprise clients.

The next cloud technology is very efficient with the oracle free tier program and it does help me in managing many things with hassles. I will advise you to purchase one of its pricing plans if you run a team and you'll like to provide a simple and easy collaboration workflow.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Next cloud is a better self-managed cloud storage alternative for small or independent businesses. It's quite easy to use and manage.I run a self-managed account on the oracle free tier ( with over 200 GB of SSD) and I haven't faced any issues with it so far. It offers a better storage capacity as compared to other cloud servers. The next cloud storage technologies help me to store and manage my business files and I'm very content with its quality of service and server download and upload speeds are very good.

#### Cons

Even though for self-managed tiers there is no premium support, however, It's still very great (if you are comfortable with coding and all other techy stuff)...

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

the mega cloud storage technology works pretty well---however, I don't trust the company that much. I mean there is no convincing information about this company so far and sincerely, I don't really trust the mega cloud.

I realise that I can actually push small businesses (consultation) to use this NAS if they want the core functionality of a shared NAS. Most of the clients that I have spoken are happy with it. This means am also Happy!

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

NC is Free and easy to use with my skillset. I just have lots of joy when it included a free mobile application that I can basically use personally and on the enterprise leve.

#### Cons

NC version upgrade is not too easy going as per my experience. However, spawning another version and mounting the previous files is easy.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

The next best thing on NAS is Synology. Though gotta spend moolah for it.

#### Pros

Zero up-front investment cost. Greater documentation.

#### Cons

Not all extensions worked properly and even some featured ones had issues. Some ideas seem half-baked still and need time to mature and become mainstream if that is even the focus.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

No commercial product means greater focus and less fragmentation, at least I would hope.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

NextCloud seemed more on the bleeding-edge and I really really like to keep my system's PHP updated. So with NextCloud's latest updates supporting PHP 7.4 and the additional news coverage was certainly a huge factor.

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

First and foremost, I like the Transparency. I am relieved to know that my data is owned by MYSELF and my data doesn't travel across the advertisement companies to profit Tech Giants. Secondly, I love the UI elements of the software of how easy it is to get things done inside the applications, how few clicks it is to require to do such and such task, everything right on my face and all the useful applications you can install within the "app store" kinda thing to boost productive. Then, things like Collabora, Nextcloud Talk, News, Announcement Center is what bounds me within the software. I don't have to use different applications to communicate with my colleagues, don't need different application to sync my files, don't need different application to reed my atom feeds, etc. You know where I'm going. Nextcloud is the complete set of application. It has indeed replaced Dropbox, Google Drive, Zoom, Google RSS Reader, and tons of other software from my life.

#### Cons

While I like most of the things around Nextcloud. I hope it gets better with UI/UX. Sometimes the UI can be very non-friendly, glitches here and there and not very sleek experience. But, overall I'm happy with what I have.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

Open Source. Privacy. Security. No-ads. Self Hosted Solution.

Overall it has been good. There have been problems with upgrades but thankfully there have been others who upgraded before me and put tips on how to proceed. There should be one forum that deals with each upgrade by number and all solutions can be found there. If there is a solution, it should be marked as such so we can easily find the solutions we need.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 2/5
- Functionality: 3/5

#### Pros

I like that I have control over my data and can adjust things a bit for my needs.

#### Cons

Not all the things work right. I have serious problems with the client. I get many error messages about sync, favorites don't work, and it is not very intuitive for the average non-techie.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

At first, I installed it to see how it would work. We went through the change over from Owncloud to Nextcloud and we were excited about seeing the changes that had hung around for a long time being addressed and the product getting better. After Nextcloud got going we switched and when it started looking better, we started committing to using it. At present we use Calenar, Files, Some News. I would like to use contacts but have had some issues connecting it. I would like to use the pictures folder for my mac/iphone photos but not sure how to make that all work together. A .pdf with instructions would be helpful.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

the fees that Dropbox charged and it didn't have calendar, etc. which I use as well.

Nextcloud is great for people who are tech-savvy and want to reduce privacy concerns brought forth by having all of your data saved to the cloud. Nextcloud should look into selling small mediacenter-style computers that have Nextcloud pre-installed on them, in cooperation with a hosting service, so that a layman could just plug it in, answer a few questions, and be up and running in minutes.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 2/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 1/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Nextcloud is a fantastic software that gives so many features for free to users to host their own data. The interface is very simple and attractive, and the mobile app and client-side software make it a great replacement for Google Drive

#### Cons

Inherent with the versatility of the software, Nextcloud is limited to who can use it. It's very complicated to set up your own server for a non-tech user, and I feel this will be a barrier preventing it from growing.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

Privacy concerns by having my data hosted by a large corporation

The client is good, but it is difficult to uses the history of synced files. Everything is marked as "updated now", and there is no indication if the files have been sent, updated, received, and especially by which user ... In that matter, tools like sharepoint does it better.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Functionality: 2/5

#### Pros

It works on raspberry pi (20 Watts only) and therefore it is possible to build a local storage inside my organization with unlimited disk storage and only on intranet (speed up the transfer and uses less bandwith and energy).

#### Cons

The sharing of multiple folders to multiple users is difficult to follow. About 100 filders are quickly shared in the owncloud root folder. One should add a folder synchronization to each of them manually on each client to really share the files (otherwise, it is just an authorization to access the files, that usually never reaches the several clients even if available in the root folder). A solution to really share (and put the files on the final user hard drive) should be perfect. example : start the sharing of a folder and select which user and where (in which folder of the final user hierarchy) it should start to synchronize : no action on the final user client (mayba an approval ?)

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

No cost, hosted on own platform, very low footprint, very low energy consumption (local storage and no usage of internet)

What we used Nextcloud for is as a file server, server for sharing files with internal and external users, functions such as Deck, Flow, simultaneous editing of MS Office files with Onlyoffice and MS Office online. I have also recently started Talk with the signal server to be able to use as a chat and video solution.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

Some of the things I like most are the ease of installing and configuring, the ease of managing and sharing files, the wide range of apps, the ability to integrate with other systems, the ability to change the code to suit us and the rapid pace of development.

#### Cons

I lack the support of virtual files in the sync client. To my knowledge, there is no info on what the bottleneck in the system is. It would have been good if there was a tool that could give an indication of choices in the system that are slow. Now I have tested myself to see which software or hardware has been too slow.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

More features, much easier to manage for both administrators and users, more customizable.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

We lacked the ability to share documents, especially with external users. We also lacked the ability to edit Office documents at the same time.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5

#### Pros

Mostly it's extensibility. I find the ability to extend and personalize Nextcloud for your purposes the most valuable thing about it. I use it as a central hub to work with many other features within the organization.

#### Cons

The cost of the paid versions of collabora office and nextcloud talk. I wish there was a tier for non-business users who what to simply set up a private service for their friends. The current price model puts these features out of reach for very small organizations or even for personal use. I also wish password reset emails, or other email from the server could be encrypted via pgp keys. There's a plug in to allow this I think but it's held up by a pending merge request.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

Nextcloud is the more complete solution.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

I switched when Nextcloud forked from ownCloud because I viewed Nextcloud as the future of the project and where all the development would be happening.

I have to say, where Microsoft tries hard with their one-drive and SharePoint, Nextcloud outperforms them completely, that is, if you want to switch to LibreOffice for your documents ;-). Since I installed Nextcloud on my own Apache server I have been working with it daily without any interruption. Updates are installed on the fly (as an administrator I've to push the button occasionally) without any downtime for other users. What I like the most is that I don't have to use an external cloud share. I can share project data securely without the fear that I don't know how /if cloud providers can/will access my data!

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

What I like the most is the complete integration of Nextcloud with other devices like mobile telephone and all OS-platforms. For an administrator Nextcloud provides a 'one button' check on all security aspects of your server. Next to that, Nextcloud provides very good documentation on to how to harden your server. Updates are very easy with the GUI, I had not one single issue since I use Nextcloud (approx 1 year). Occasionally you must complete some actions by the command line (the occ program) but that is also very well documented. The Nextcloud client both on Linux (Kubuntu) and Windows 10 works like a charm. On my Android phone I don't need google stuff, photos and contacts are directly synced with my Nextcloud. Due to the integrated e-mail client, separately to be activated, I don't need to run a web client on my server anymore (Roundcube), it saves administration work. It is very easy to set up a project environment to share with external users. I like the integration of draw.io, within the project, all project members can use draw.io from the browser for our project. Nextcloud is very precise on updates. This means that if you use the stable channel, as I do, you get only a new major version after a few .x releases of a new major release as to be sure that it is really stable. What can I write more, there are numerous applications that can be activated like Talk (video conferencing), calendar, activities on your drives and so on.

#### Cons

Hardening my Apache server was a bit difficult, although Nextcloud provides also quite good documentation for that issue.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

I've read quite a few reviews on all kinds of cloud software before I took the adventure with Nextcloud.

#### Pros

I've been using Nextcloud as a replacement for Google Drive and Google Docs for the last four or five years. It has a ton of really great apps that I can install that can replicate popular Google services. For instance, I can use the Nextcloud desktop and mobile sync clients to have Google Drive like functionality. I can install a calendar app that gives me Google Calender functionality. There are apps for tasks, documents, and e-mail that all work really well, and again, replicate that Google functionality that we've all come to be fans of. However, my favorite feature is the "News" app that lets me setup all of my RSS feeds and view them in a browser. Previously I had used Google Reader, but when Google shut down that product, it left me searching for a replacement. I tried several other options, but eventually stumbled onto Nextcloud. Initially I only wanted to use Nextcloud for the News app, but when I saw everything that it could do, I migrated away from Google entirely and now use my self hosted Nextcloud instance which gives me full control over my documents and files.

#### Cons

The biggest con for me with this application is it never upgrades properly. I use a third party hosting provider called Dreamhost, and whenever I attempt to do an automatic or manual upgrade to my Nextcloud instance, I end up breaking it and have to rebuild it from scratch. I don't know if this is due to something on my hosting provider's end, but every single time I've attempted to do an upgrade it has failed. Additionally, community support can sometimes be lacking. Since this is an open source product, you have to rely on a lot of forum posts and blog entries to find solutions to your problems. Sometiems that can be frustrating.

#### Vendor response

Dear user, Thank you for the review on Capterra! We're very glad you are happy with Nextcloud! Nextcloud upgrades should absolutely not give any issues - there must be a problem at Dreamhost if they do. In addition, we offer our customers stand-by support when doing upgrades to make sure even large installations upgrade smoothly. Our experienced team is extremely adept at identifying and fixing them quickly! If you want to get the most out of Nextcloud, consider a Nextcloud Subscriptions to benefit from our expertise and additional functionality like Outlook integration. The community forums are - well that, community forums, only really suitable for home users.

I consider it to be an essential tool to consider when choosing a file/document and collaborative control and management platform.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

The user interface is very intuitive. As well as the installation. We have made sure that our VPS have SSD storage, this greatly speeds up searches. We have about 30 clients and 10 employees working on a docker instance at the same time, and the resource consumption is hardly noticeable. You need to make sure you have well-optimized hardware. If you do this, you will love Nextcloud, because it will be as light as a feather. I love its ability to integrate with other collaboration apps. You can grow as far as the hardware allows.

#### Cons

I think for whom there is a solution. I wouldn't take or add anything to NextCloud for now. It has met all my requirements. Oh my God! Can be installed on a Raspberry Pi!

The only issue I had was during the update process half a year ago, it was botched but didn't give any error and got stuck on showing version 22 was the latest until a few days ago where we realised the latest version was already 25. And we remedied that.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

It's free! And since it's PHP, it's simple and quick and set up. Once done, it's effortless to use.

#### Cons

It's written in PHP and can quite easily become a security nightmare but as long as you do the necessary precautions and server hardening yourself, it should be fine.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

It's cheaper (free) than DropBox.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

It was better maintained than ownCloud.

It gives a great assistance in reading a ton of documents which are vital in an industry. What does it make super easy to use is the access to the cloud from mobile device or your working computer and for a big holding company is vital.

#### Cons

For me is very important the option for a dark or light theme, due to eye surgery. In Nextcloud case it is there and using this service I'm not disappointed, so far so good.

### A great option for customizable cloud storage and collaboration

I've been using NextCloud since it's initial release (I started with OwnCloud before it forked). I love that it is open source and I can set it up on my own server, which is exactly what I've done for both personal use and a non-profit I support. I've been using it in both of those roles for a couple of years now and have been very satisfied. I've even used hosted versions for personal use as well.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

It gives me more flexibility than other cloud storage options in terms of defining different users and user access to different content. Also, the federated storage model is fantastic - I can use much more cost-effective, S3 compliant storage solutions than standard web server storage pricing.

#### Cons

A few of the user interface design choices are non-standard, such that new users don't always intuit how to use it; but there are only a few such issues.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

Three elements were key: - cost containment; I use the open source solution so my only cost is hosting. - feature set; I was able to set up the kind of user access control I wanted. - feature set; I was able to link to S3 compliant storage, first AWS but now I use Wasabi.

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

I am a staunch open source supporter, finding it a cost-effective solution for personal and non-profit. Sometimes that entails a trade-off, but that was not the case with Nextcloud - I have all the features I want, some I didn't even have with paid solutions (DropBox). So, to have what I want and support open source development is a win-win no-brainer.

### Best known solution for network of NGOs, great emphasis on privacy and open standards

We started with a test period, yet the staff and working groups adopted Nextcloud for their main workflow much sooner than anticipated. Nextcloud's emancipatory approach to document ownership and the sharing logic vs. traditional ACL required some training and new concepts within our teams.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Nextcloud comes with a great flexibility: already with a tiny budget you can get started and meet many of your organization's needs. There are no hidden costs. New features can be added by extensions ("apps") almost on-the-go. Scaling to bigger set-ups is not too difficult. The developers and community are extremely friendly and helpful.

#### Cons

When we started two years ago, features were often not well documented and the upgrade process sometimes caused problems. But the situation has improved dramatically since then. The approach to end-to-end encryption and its key management is sometimes confusing.

#### Reasons for choosing Nextcloud

- Open source and open standards approach; - Possibility for self-hosting, no dependency on companies with intransparent data privacy; - No strict licence fees;

#### Reasons for switching to Nextcloud

Too many different tools were in place, each team used a different set of tools and there was a risk of losing data. Nextcloud offered a one-stop solution for most collaborative needs. At the same time, because of the open-source and open standards approach, Nextcloud comes with little risk of a vendor lock-in.
