I used Inkscape early in my design career when I couldn't really afford expensive design software and it worked great to get design work out the door.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

Can't beat free software! But more than that it has a ton of depth and powerful features. You really can create any kind of vector graphics you'd want to with Inkscape.

#### Cons

It can be a little hard to learn and the interface isn't quite as polished as some other more popular design software.

### Great for SVG

- Overall rating: 4/5

Years ago I started using Inkscape seriously, to create things like logos and baners, after a short learning curve, the tool became very useful, and its use was almost daily for a while. However, when I started trying to create derivative works, from resources bought in asset stores, which usually come as AI or EPS, I started having problems. Today I use it in conjunction with the paid tools, because its support for SVG is really great, and some quick tasks are done in an easier way than in other software, such as converting to PNG, which is much less bureaucratic.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

The fact that Inkscape is free software and is great for editing SVG format makes it an indispensable tool.

#### Cons

The most important thing for commercial use, which makes it impractical to use Inkscape alone is the limited support for .AI and .EPS files, as these are popular formats for distributing content in asset stores.

#### Reasons for choosing Inkscape

I have already done a review of Illustrator here, and I can say that for a while I was jumping between Inkscape and Illustrator, sometimes due to compatibility problems with the IA and EPS files and sometimes due to problems with the financial cost of maintenance. I actually found the middle ground using Inkscape for SVG and quick tasks (as it is much smaller), but Illustrator paid for larger professional tasks.

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

CrDoc was a good tool, and it was also free, but it had the big problem of using proprietary file format, when I needed to exchange files with other companies, it became impractical. With Inkscape, for a long time I was able to work only with it. CrDoc also had some bugs or limitations in simple tasks.

For me, this is an extraordinary design software, super intuitive to use, handy since it possesses a portable version, and the vector image format is great for building icons compatible with almost any website out there.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 2/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

It is Completely free. The user-interface works phenomenal. Designing is super straightforward.

#### Cons

The layers management and some other fancy features from paid alternatives are missing.

#### Reasons for choosing Inkscape

It is a free software with super intuitive features, lightweight and fast.

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

In the first place I wanted a free software, but, after using Inkscape for a while, I found myself more productive designing in this software than using any other with more complexes user-interfaces and tools managements.

### Best software for logo editing and creation.

This indeed is the best software if you want to start create and editing vector images.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 3/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

It is a free open source software thus anyone can download and use it. Using this software is really easy even for starters since it does not have complicated components that one can't understand easily. Unlike other alternative software's, this software can run on different platforms that is Windows, MAC OS and Linux Operating systems. Lastly this software is flexible and versatile that is it can be changed or modified without changing anything.

#### Cons

Sometimes its processing functionality can be a little slow. Exporting an image does not support various formatting types. Even if it has more paid features on other alternative software's, this software's interface is not user friendly, it needs one learn fully in order to come up with a complete and good vector image of logo. I don't have much negative about this software only my main focus is on speed, starting even this software takes a lot of time.

#### Reasons for choosing Inkscape

Even though does the same work as Inkscape was good for me it has more free features compared to illustrator.

Right now, Inkscape is indispensable for me and my design career. Even though Inkscape is an open-source and free application, that doesn't mean it's inferior to paid alternatives in any way. Sure, Illustrator has its great set of features, but Inkscape is nowhere lesser. I have not needed to switch to any other alternative. It gets the job done really well! Love it!

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

It is very easy to use. It has a very friendly interface. It's really feature-packed. It has some out-of-the-box features equivalent to those in Adobe Illustrator but for free! It's open-source and get updated regularly. I love you can even work with PDF files natively. Also, I rely on the "trace bitmap" feature a lot: it's great to reuse royalty-free bitmaps on a quick design or just for inspiration. Inkscape is amazing and free!

#### Cons

I WISH it supported the Adobe Illustrator format (ai) but it's too much to ask as that is a proprietary file format. Also, some fundamental actions are complicated to implement: for example, setting default document properties shouldn't require to save a file in a specific folder or exporting your artwork as a .jpeg file shouldn't require an extension; those actions should be more straight forward.

#### Reasons for choosing Inkscape

Adobe Illustrator is really expensive. I was just starting as a designer, so I had no money. Inkscape is free and doesn't lack too many features when compared. So it was the way to go.

Inkscape is a wonderful free vector tool. It is perfect for graphic design and can be used without difficulty if you take the time to learn how to use it. I recommend it!

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Besides being free and open source, Inkscape has some interesting features. For example, I like the fact that it allows you to create images in SVG (vector) format, which has many advantages over traditional raster images (JPEG, GIF and PNG). Vector images are smaller, flexible and scalable without loss of quality. This is an undeniable advantage. It also adapts to the main operating systems such as Windows, Linux and MacOS. This suits me perfectly since I have two computers, one where Windows is installed and the other MacOS.

#### Cons

A little slow to start but I gladly forgive it because it helps me to create for example beautiful stickers!

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

What I like about Inkscape is that you can create clean vector images to use on a website for example.

Inkscape is great for minor edits to images and for exporting SVG images to raster formats. I use it to create minimalist icons and export them to PNG format. However, due to the rise of the WebP format I've had to add an extra step to my workflow where I export from SVG to PNG, then from PNG to WebP. While I could install a WebP plugin for Inkscape I've had bad experiences with Inkscape plugins in the past and I avoid them as much as possible.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

Supports most of the mainstream media formats. Uses okay file compression for exported PNG files. It's easy to use and learn. It's stable.

#### Cons

It does not support WebP image import and export out of the box. Compatibility issues when objects/shapes are not converted into paths. If I don't convert SVG objects to paths they might not display correctly in other applications.

#### Reasons for choosing Inkscape

The other options are not supported on Linux-based OSs

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

Corel Draw is not supported on my current operating system (Linux-based)

Since I am predominantly a Linux user this program works well for me. I have used Adobe illustrator in windows on certain projects and I get just the same clean crisp duck with you could get it is much lighter on your resources so it performs faster the learning curve is very small I suggest that you actually graphic designer try it.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

My experience using Inkscape started about 11 years ago I did not have the money to pay for Adobe illustrator being a graphic designer I needed a tool that would give me the same functionality. as Adobe illustrator in my use of Inkscape I found that it had several features that Adobe illustrator lacked such as plugins that would allow you to do tracing and a lot more, I have enjoyed using it I think it is a very professional piece of software. Also, the learning curve is much lower than Adobe illustrator you can open up the program and give right to work.

#### Cons

The cons of using Inkscape I have found are very few 1 is that when opening up a program Inkscape does not have tabs in its layout so if you start a new project it opens up a totally new window. I myself prefer layout of tabs it is a much cleaner look and it does not clutter up your desktop.

#### Reasons for choosing Inkscape

Adobe illustrator and corel draw can be pricey especially Adobe illustrator although it is the go-to software for professionals you can get the same thing done with this open-source software has just as many tools as Adobe illustrator and the open-source community keeps it up to date.

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

I am a minute you Adobe illustrator did not port over well to linux. Linux provides a program that emulates windows which is called wine but it would not allow the newer versions to run in linux also, Adobe make you subscribe to their programs so you cannot own any of their software at this time, I found that to be quite expensive I began looking for open-source solutions.

I use Inkscape for making vector graphics for my research papers and articles. Initially, I was using simple powerpoint to create figures and block diagrams. Whenever I used these images in my research paper, their quality became deteriorated. Then I found Inkscape and my life became easy. Now I can easily create figures and images and export them in .eps format to use them in my research papers.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 3/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

It is free and accessible. One can easily get familiar with its tools, because there is a quick support from community in terms of tutorials and guidance. It is backward compatible; files created in svg format in older versions can be opened in newer versions.

#### Cons

Sometimes, I find it difficult to write text in Latex format. There should be seamless text conversion. Whenever, somebody import figures or images in Inkscape, their sizes or pixels should be automatically adjusted with the existed graphics.

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

Because I wanted good resolution images for my research articles.

#### Cons

Apart from not being the chosen solution for the printing industry, Inkscape works as well as all the other solutions, it opens the files produced by them and exports to their format. Inkscape does not require the purchasing of a license, making it perfect for small businesses. It is easy to work and working with it is just like working with the best software your money can buy.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Inkscape has all the features the major vector illustration tools provide, with more control over the end result, the file, and is distributed under a GPL license, meaning it is free of charge and free to be modified by knowledgeable developers. It provides ways to implement new features via scripts, and also has a great developers' environment, continuously working on improvements for the tool.

#### Cons

Other than the fact that the publishing industry does not use it as the standard, there are no downside in using it.

#### Reasons for choosing Inkscape

The choice was based on four factors: 1- How would the operations made with the software be different from the others; 2- How would the results of the software be accepted by the industry; 3- How can we improve our own production pipeline using the product and 4- Cost-benefit. By far, the GPL license which Inkscape is available provides the answer for the last two items. Meaning, it is free to be used and its source code is open, allowing improvements for knowledgeable developers. Although its source code is open, using it to add our own improvements is a huge task. It solves this by providing a scripting system that we can develop our own plugins, in a much easier way than writing extra code for the software itself. This allows for easy improvements in the production pipeline. The possibility to open and export files from the software that are used by the industry solves the second issue. The main operations performed in the other software works without flaws in Inkscape. The only setback was re-learning where to find the tool needed, as well as re-learning the shortcuts to speed the work. This was just a matter of usage within time.

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

The switch was based on monetary issues. New versions of the switched products cost money and do not provide that much improvement. Also, the possibility to develop and add our own features via scripts, not available in the other options, was a game-changer.

I really like it over all you can do everything you need that all of the other paid softwares can do with exception to working with CMYK formats, this software is that good that when they get to integrate the CMYK color format as a printout file, a great majority of the people in the printing industry will switch to it. Is so well thought that is possible to designs faster than illustrator and corel draw, many of the tools make the job easier plus you can give a donation of 30 bucks or 100 bucks or 10 a year depending on you, but you get so much power for every cent or dollar you donate to the inkscape team.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

- The amount of stuff you can do with this Open Source software is outstanding and the quality is superb, you can create all the graphics necessary for your websites, motion graphics, banners, games and animations. - Also is possible to export to a variety of file formats supported by adobe, save images with transparency and even create DXF files for CNC and G code machine cuts, even use your plotter straight out of the software with a plug in.

#### Cons

- May have a bit of a steep learning curve since it is open source but there is ton of documentation and videos in youtube to overcome this challenge. - With heavy graphics the program can crash if you do not save your work on layers so you can turn off finished work and work on layers, but can be overcomed with constant saving. - It can be confusing when you select graphics because it’s highlighted only with a dotted box. - Some tools don't work in a logical manner. - It does not support CMYK colors.

I have been looking for quite awhile for a replacement for my Adobe Fireworks graphics program. I needed a tool that allowed me to easily manipulate graphics and create new content with ease. I'm not a graphics designer, so I don't need the power and complexity of Photoshop or Gimp, but something that will allow me to do some basic graphics manipulation with ease. Inkscape fits this need well. I also wanted something multiplatform since I work primarily on a Mac with an Ubuntu machine as my alternate. Inkscape runs great on each.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 3/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

I like the fact that I can insert basic shapes and manipulate existing images with relative ease. I'm a developer (not designer) so I do get artwork created by others that needs manipulating. Inkscape allows me to resize, reformat and do basic image manipulation with ease.

#### Cons

I was using the beta 1.0 version previously and am happy to see the release of the official 1.0 version for the Mac that resolved a bunch of issues. I would welcome a more feature rich "magic wand" tool to select objects and be able to manipulate image boundaries. The software is powerful although with power comes complexity at times.

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

Adoble discontinued support of Fireworks.

### Inkscape for SVGs

SVG editing was the main reason I used Inkscape and it has delivered on what it offers.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 2/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Functionality: 3/5

#### Pros

For editing SVGs, I find Inkscape to be the 'quick and dirty' tool that I use most often. Adobe Illustrator can do the same things, but Inkscape isn't weighed down by the bloat that Illustrator suffers from. If you just need to trim some space off an SVG, Inkscape will do it in seconds with a single command. Illustrator requires you to jump through hoops to do the same.

#### Cons

While it's quick and easy to do the small stuff, Inkscape still lacks the tools that Illustrator provides. Inkscape can also feel like a tool that was made to explicitly be different than Illustrator, as not much is laid out the same at all.

#### Reasons for switching to Inkscape

Ease of use.
