W/o this = digested by a sarlacc in the Great Pit of Carkoon

Like the heavens parted on my sad scholarly life.

PROS

Affordable for a poor PhD student; super easy & intuitive to use - seamless integration with Google docs allowing for collaborative writing projects. On the cloud so that I can switch from computer to computer + not worry about losing all my references if my ancient computers stop working. Honestly, shudder when thinking about life without it.

CONS

Sometimes it acts funny when I click on a reference from Google Docs but is a minor annoyance.

Great for research

This is the easiest way I’ve found to collect and organize literature.

PROS

Paperpile is the easiest software I’ve used to manage PDFs and other documents for research. Running within chrome and using google docs or word for citations is more straightforward than endnote, mendeley, or zotero, without clunky app interfaces.

CONS

The PDF viewer and annotations are great in iPadOS, but can be distracting if I share a paper with my team. Collaborative annotations has been a “coming soon” feature for a while, and development is overall pretty slow.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

Mendeley was unstable and permanently corrupted itself, endnote was clunky, slow to load, and also frequently crashed. Neither was great at pulling metadata.

Vendor Response

We appreciate the earnest feedback, Bjorn! Indeed, our development has been slow and unpredictable as a small self-funded team, so there have been several unfulfilled promises/expectations over the years. Our team has grown recently and has been hard at work rewriting our entire UI and extension, so there should be novelties "soon" ;) Since I think you've already expressed interest for this feature, I'll add this feedback to the topic on our tracker as a +2 from you to bump up its priority.

Pros and cons

PROS

It is easy to use and the interface looks clean and simple.

CONS

(1) Sometimes when I tried to add a paper from a web page [SENSITIVE CONTENT], although you can see that the readers can simply download the PDF from the website, after I saved it to Paperpile it always says no PDF found so I would have to manually download it and then upload it to Paperpile. (2) Cannot rotate pages when viewing PDFs in Paperpile.

Paperpile makes citing easier!

Overall Paperpile is very useful in my day-to-day life. I just submitted a scientific paper with citations all managed by Paperpile! I will continue to use this.

PROS

I like the seamless in-text citation ability and the automatic bibliography creation feature.

CONS

The Paperpile page is slow and takes up too many computing resources. Opening papers to annotate is quite slow and my computer has problems when too many Paperpile tabs are open.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

I liked Paperpile's ability to seamlessly to in-text citation in Google Drive.

Essential and indispensable ingredient of team science

PROS

Collaborative research requires an ecosystem of knowledge sharing and team-based writing. Could writing platforms are gaining popularity and it requires integration with citation managers. Paperpile is the best so far.

CONS

Search capacity is very limited. You can not perform advanced search to find the reference you need. However, if you know what you need or the size of library is small (<200 articles) this is not a huge limitation.

Great reference management tool

PROS

Really like how easy it is to add papers to your library on Paperpile straight from the browser, as well as the Google Docs plug in which makes adding references to collaborative projects really easy. Lots of tools for organization within the system, where you can organize by project. Papers save as PDFs to the associated Google account which is nice as it saves space on your main drive.

CONS

It can be hard to convince colleagues to switch to this reference manager as it does have a monthly fee, whereas universities often have subscriptions to other reference managers that are available for free to students and faculty. Install of the plug-in can be a little confusing as well.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

Paperpile is way easier to use and interface with Google Docso

Vendor Response

Thanks for the nice feedback, Rebecca! Many (or at least quite a few) universities and institutions also have group/site licenses with us, although as a younger product than our usual competitors I suppose we're still catching up. Hopefully we'll keep increasing that number as word of Paperpile spreads thanks to advocates like you :-)

Paperpile

Excellent. Very easy to use and easily accessible on all of my devices.

PROS

Easy to search, easy to add new articles

CONS

The sharing of references with others is kind of difficult to figure out.

Reason for choosing Paperpile

Paperpile does a better job of formatting articles and offering easy access to pdfs and citations. I still need to use Endnote since it is soo popular in academia. It is important for Paperpile to offer easy import into Endnote.

Easy to use and ideal for managing libraries

PROS

It is very easy to use both in Word and in Google Docs. Very easy to import papers and manage libraries for different projects. Much less glitchy than other programs and imports paper metadata with much fewer errors compared to other commonly used software.

CONS

It still is much easier to use with google docs than Word. It is still hard to justify the cost of this program compared to free alternatives. Managing libraries for different projects could be a little easier.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

Other software was much glitchier in importing metadata.

You should seriously switch to this

PROS

I love the integration with google chrome and the iPad app. It's easy to add a paper while searching google scholar or Pubmed. It also completely changed the process of writing references. It's so easy to add a reference while writing that I will never again go through the painstaking process of adding references at the end of writing.

CONS

Honestly, no, I am super happy with the switch. I wish I had switched from Mendeley to this earlier in my PhD.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

Mendeley was buggy, hard to use, and ugly.

Easy, simple and intuitive

After transition from different reference managers, I am very satisfied with paperpile.

PROS

Easy, simple and intuitive user interface.

CONS

It is a bit annyoing that i have to renew the license annually. It would be great to have option of perpetual license . It may also be great if I can keep highlight and note in the PDF which can be reflected in paperpile interface.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

Papers had been trying to implement too many functions which made the performance slow. They also didn't respond to user's feedback quickly.

Love many aspects of Paperpile

PROS

I have been using Paperpile for about two and a half years. I used to use Mendeley and have used EndNote as well. Paperpile is definitely my favorite for easy cloud-based pdf management, as well as integration with Google scholar and Google docs (which I had been using for a long time before trying Paperpile). I definitely find it to be the least clunky citation management system in terms of finding, saving, and reading papers. I use it almost every day.

CONS

When it comes to actually creating a bibliography, I have had more issues with citations actually being correct with Paperpile than with Endnote. An obvious downside is Paperpile costs money, while Mendeley and Zotero are free, at least last I checked. But I like it so much for storing and reading that it's worth it to me. I've had some glitches with the display a few times (the side bar wouldn't show up correctly). I was an early tester of the Word integration and that seemed to have some issues, but it's been a while since I used it in Word, it might be better now. One thing I do miss about the paper-reading experience from Mendeley - you could take notes in a box on the side. You can do something similar with sticky notes in Paperpile but I did like that option.

Vendor Response

Thanks for your input, Christina! We'd be interested in hearing more about the formatting issues you've faced when creating bibliographies, if you care to elaborate a bit. Please feel free to drop us a line via chat or email (support@paperpile.com). Our Word plugin has indeed come a long way and is almost ready for release to general availability - please let us know what you think whenever you get a chance to try it. As for general notes in the PDF viewer - this feature was available in previous builds and is expected to return, so I've added your +1 to the topic on our tracker for the team's reference.

Clean, functional, streamlined software

I have overall really enjoyed using Paperpile and am glad I made the switch. It is hard to collaborate with others sometimes since they use other reference managers and can't edit the references (though sometimes they try and it messes it up).

PROS

I love that the interface is simple and clean, and that I can easily access the website on any device and read/look up my references.

CONS

The word plug-in, which is the most important thing to me since I write all of my papers in MS Word, can be buggy at times and sometimes does not update with new references/has to be recompiled frequent. Once, it stopped working and just gave me errors for all of the references and I had to go through and re-enter all of the references again. That was a frustrating experience.

Vendor Response

Thanks for such nice adjectives, Lisa. We've been working hard on the Word plug-in to prevent the type of issue you experienced from happening again. There's been good progress so we hope to bring the app out of beta soon! As usual, please feel free to report any weirdness or share observations with us via chat or email (support@paperpile.com).

The best paper management system out there.

In research, we read many papers, but the other management systems I used (or were given for free) were so old and confusing to use that I hated using them. It was hard to learn the process of citing and managing papers. Paperpile fixed all issues I previously had. It is easy to use and quick to learn.

PROS

Paperpile is similar to other management systems, but it is so much easier to use. My favorite thing about Paperpile is that it doesn't look like it was made in the '90s with the same interface 20 years later. It's clean and sleek. Plus it is very user-friendly as it doesn't have a lot of buttons to push, but has everything right on the screen that is easy to use.

CONS

They have been improving the software since day one. Everything that I disliked has been fixed and updated.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

The interface with Paperpile looked so clean and updated. At the same time, Zotero and other software I had used had a really looking ugly interface.

Vendor Response

Thanks for the lovely feedback, Daniel. Intuitiveness and ease of use are major goals for us which continue guiding our development. Updates to our UI and some other new features are in the pipeline!

Overall, great citation manager

PROS

The best parts of paperpile are its ability to import and organize papers. It's very easy to find papers in paperpile and it's very easy to share citations with others.

CONS

The worst part of paperpile is when importing papers, it often finds non-published (arXiv) version of the papers instead of their published counter parts. Additionally, the default cite-key format is undesirable (and I'm under the impression that it's not possible to change the cite-key format).

Vendor Response

Thank for the feedback, Ari. We rely on the information found online, and usually published papers are behind a sign-in or paywall so our tool fetches the free version automatically. Let me know if the same happens even with a proxy set up. On the other hand, the ability to edit / customize cite-key formats has been quite demanded and should be seeing the light of day soon as a new settings dialog. There should be some news on our fall newsletter!

A must for any scientific researcher!

Fantastic software that improves scientific writing efficiency like no other. A must for anyone in research!

PROS

The integration of Paperpile into Google Chrome is seamless and drastically improves efficiency when scouring for journal articles. It has helped me to organize my list of journal articles, organize and reorganize references while writing and submitting to different scientific journals, and the search feature within your own library and through Google has saved me so much time.

CONS

I wish there was a way to link a university account to Paperpile so I could download articles using my university VPN & account. I currently have to use a VPN or proxy server each time I visit a journal's site. Sometimes I forget about this so when I download metadata from Paperpile directly, the PDF does not come along with it and I have to search, download, and upload it separately. The Microsoft Word functions are still buggy, but luckily I use Google Docs which it runs smoothly on.

Paperpile is pretty much mission-critical around here.

As a team leaders and project manager, I often need to co-author reports that cite a lot of scientific research and government documents (conservation plans, for example). Managing the references, bibliography, and collections of publications would be a nightmare without Paperpile. I'm currently teaching it to my colleagues.

PROS

Ability to "cite while you write" in a Google doc, sharable library folders, multiple easy ways to add publications, storage of publications in Google drive, responsive and helpful online user support.

CONS

There are those links that remain on the citations in a document that appear to be broken. I've learned to clear them out (see my conversation in the help forum). At first I thought they were supposed to link to the record in shared PP folder, which would be nice, or to the corresponding entry in the bibiography at the bottom of the document (also great), but they are just artifacts of the citation editing process. It has caused confusion with my co-editors and I always have to explain it. That said, overall there is very little to not-like about Paperpile!

Reason for choosing Paperpile

Paperpile was recommended to me and taught to me by a colleague at CBI, [SENSITIVE CONTENT]. I was instantly hooked.

Reasons for switching to Paperpile

I needed to do my writing and bibliography management in Google docs.

"Paperpile is perfect"

PROS

Paperpile is the best citation management software for working on shared documents (i.e. google docs). I have introduced my colleagues to it for documents that we are collaboratively working on. As one of my colleagues put it, "Paperpile is perfect." I couldn't agree more. After having used many citation management tools, Paperpile is by far the easiest and most straightforward. I really appreciate the add-in extension for web browsers so that you can easily cite a website. I also appreciate that you can add citations in documents directly through web searches. Additionally, it is simple to share libraries. I now prefer to use Google docs over Word even when I'm not working collaboratively because of the ease of using Paperpile in Google docs.

CONS

When a reference is cited in a document it is "hyperlinked," but the hyperlink doesn't actually connect to anything. This has been confusing to some of my colleagues. It would be nice if the hyperlink connected to the actual citation. Some of my colleagues are hesitant to use Paperpile because they don't want to pay for a software when there are free citation softwares available. Having a longer free trial period might help with that.

Easy paper management tool

PROS

This software allows you to save papers, along with the PDF copies (if applicable). The phone app works well to integrate browser activity on your desktop - super easy to access papers while on-the-go. I like the "Cite" function, which generates a citation of the paper in a format of choice.

CONS

The PDF is not always attached to the Paperpile entry, especially if you have to go through a paywall to access an article. In an opposite scenario, sometimes Paperpile is unable to add a paper to the library if you are only looking at the PDF web version of a paper. This is an issue I see when using PubMed and integrating with my institutional access.
