OST is good, QuickBid is absolute garbage

Pros

OST: On screen takeoff software is powerful, functional and reliable.
QuickBid: No pro's. Not worth considering.

Cons

QuickBid: I spent 6 months working 50% on managing projects and 50% on developing a usable database for QuickBid(QB) for my company. In this time, I learned everything about QB and had a very high level of proficiency with the software. I knew the limitations, the "workarounds" (which are numerous), and the quirks. The interior database we purchased with the software is far from comprehensive and does not calculate materials correct enough to order all materials. This is why we started fresh with a new database. This software is obviously not designed for walls and ceilings contractors. It does some things well but it does not do both walls and ceilings well. In the database there are so many exceptions you have to make or "workarounds" as OnCenter calls them in order to make the database calculate the dollar total properly. When you do a workaround it creates inaccuracies in another part of the program like a material list, budget, etc. In the end, we could make it work but it became clumsy with all of the workarounds and it lost many features that sold me on the software to begin with. The program also failed to sum equipment properly in a bid which is a deal killer for me. That is the estimating software's number one job.

For many uses and has saved me on many projects.

Pros

I use this software as a means for QTO when I am creating a budget and when I need to back check my subs so we don't have a scope gap.

Cons

Sometimes it's complicated to convert my PDFs into a .tif file for the program so it doesn't allow me to use the take off and I end up using bluebeam for ease.

Pros

OnScreen Takeoff Typical Groups works well - I don't know any other software that has this function. Very helpful for apartment takeoffs.

Cons

Software has become outdated. OnCenter is very slow to respond to problems with their software.
Several problems discussed with their technical department are known, but they state that in their opinion these issues, some of which can actually result in incorrect bids, are not critical enough to warrant repair. I suggest being extremely careful when using OnScreen and QuickBid interactively. Note that Windows 10 has more issues that older versions of Windows - Oncenter is not keeping up. DON'T GET A NEW COMUTER!
OnCenter is not keeping up with innovation that other software companies.
Adding notes is cumbersome - in OnScreen they get in the way of doing takeoffs. In QuickBid they easily become buried in the bid and get missed.
Adding drawing numbers and names function in OnScreen Takeoff does not work well.
Revising drawings to TIFF is outdated.
Programs do not work well interactively and also bog down on large bids.

Pros

I love the simplicity of the features, the range of details and customization you can do with the software. Definitely like the export to Excel feature, where we can customize the look and functionality of the end product.

Cons

Cost is a major challenge for a lot of business software, especially as a startup company. I'm still looking for the functionality of On Screen but with a one-time purchase and something a bit more affordable to a brand new company with unstable revenue.

Great Takeoff Software

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Value for Money

Great software if you need to do professional quantity takeoffs

Pros

This product offers you a lot of options to structure your takeoff:
- Conditions: This is the main structure to organize your takeoff. Fully customizable, conditions can be used as a CSI-Code structure.
- Layers: Similar to CAD-Software, you can create layers (even as Master layers which will be available for all projects) and assign a layer to each takeoff. Turning layers on/off helps you to work with multiple takeoffs on one drawing.
- Zones: Creating zones (and organize them on a separate layer) helps to split your takeoff according to the zones - fully automated!
- Takeoffs: Each takeoff can have up to three different quantities - whatever you need.
Takeoff description: each takeoff (condition) has a name as well as a field for notes where you can put a full description of your item.
- Multi-takeoff: This is an outstanding feature, saving a lot of time: mark several conditions (takeoff-items) and do your takeoff: the takeoff will be done for each of the simultaneously!
- Second window: the program allows you to open a second window, to have another drawing (details etc.) open while you work on your first drawing.
- Overlay: changes in drawings can made visible by using the new drawing as an overlay on top of the old drawing: you will automatically see, what changed.
There are much more pros and features available than any other takeoff software. This is the great thing about a software that is a takeoff software and nothing else: the software does not pretend to be an estimating software and by focusing on takeoff, the software does a great job.
Online descriptions are available for almost every issue you might run in.

Cons

The software is missing only one feature: to assign a different condition to a specific takeoff is not available (up to now).

Keep up the good work On Screen! I would like to see more added features and additional updates more than just once or twice a year.

Pros

This program is also... easy to learn, easy to use, easy to train on! All that you need to complete accurate takeoffs for bidding is available in one software package! Purchase this product, you will not be disappointed! Intelligent paste function is awesome and great to use for repetitive items.

Cons

I would more colors to differentiate areas when I am doing take offs and more overlays should be possible. There are always so many plans and revisions and only allowing one overlay makes it difficult at times to provide an accurate takeoff without doing the work twice.

I've used OST for 10 years and overall satisfied. I think for the annual service fee, there should be more upgrades than once every 2 years or so. We have used tech support maybe once a year if that and the owner of the business doesn't think that justifies the annual cost.

Pros

It's easy and quick to use and easy to train others. I like and use the overlay function a lot. I also like the intelligent paste function as well for repetitious items.

Cons

Only 1 overlay possible, needs ability to remove the original plan and add an additional overlay as plans change (i.e.,80% dwgs to 90% dwgs to final dwgs. The 90% supersede the 80% and now we have final. A new bid file has to be created and the takeoff copied to the new file for adjustments)
Database bogs down on very large projects
Auto count feature doesn't work very well on scanned plans

Before buying I compared this, E-Takeoff, Planswift, and Bluebeam takeoffs. This was hands down the best option.

Pros

Easy and intuitive to use. Some examples are- same copy paste functions as every other windows program, bulk copy (multiple takeoffs), fast plan loading, and a user interface that flows nicely.

Cons

Somewhat complicated to learn, the overall process makes sense, but you need to follow the steps to the letter.

I have been an On-Screen Takeoff user since 2008. The program is well designed, but the company has made the program non-macintosh user-friendly. I used the program in a Virtual Environment without issue for 8 years, and then OST stopped allowing the program to be utilized in a virtual environment (Parallels Desktop). They now require you to have a Windows Machine running License Manager (at all times) to utilize their product. Simply unacceptable. They have no regard for their Customer.

Pros

The product is well designed and easy to use (except for the what is necessary to run the program on a virtual environment).

Cons

Cannot run the program in a Virtual Environment.

Advice to Others

Don't purchase this program if you utilize a Mac. They are not Mac friendly.

An Easy to Use Takeoff Software

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

I have been using On-Screen Takeoff for several years now and I really enjoy using it. It is easy to set up conditions and perform the takeoff. I enjoy that you can break your takeoff out by areas and you can even create folders for the different areas of the takeoff. This works well for breaking out by CSI, or whichever WBS you may use. Also, OST can store data in Access databases that can be set to backup on a schedule. I personally like how quickly I can bring my drawings into the software and how quickly they load once in the program. Overall I have been using OST for several years now and I would recommend it to the construction professional.

Pros

Ease of use
Ability to create libraries of commonly used conditions
Customer support
Fast Loading
Ability to transfer data to other estimating software
Ability to export to excel
Ability to share entire takeoff file with other professionals

Cons

Cannot currently import an excel document with conditions to create a library
Cannot trace drawing lines automatically

Advice to Others

After using a few different types of takeoff software, On-Screen Takeoff is the premier choice. Its ease of use combined with top-notch reliability and customer service ensures we can do our job with the confidence a cost estimator demands.

We use the online version of this software (OASIS). It is very robust and it has a lot of filters and functionalities. It produces very nice summaries and graphic outputs (takeoffs with legend and quantities). Once the plans are uploaded, the quality drops down dramatically (I guess for efficiency purposes) and the output graphs and plots are low quality also, but they make a great reference tool.
The main problem I see is that it does not has user-friendly controls/commands, it is almost counter-intuitive the way it works if compared to other engineering Softwares. Once you burn that stage and get used to the commands, it gets back to the very powerful tool it is.

at first i did not stick to a specific process and my take-off got messy and difficult for others to understand. Once i figured out a system, I stuck to it and the results were clear. My take-offs are clean and easy to understand. My production has more than doubled and the results are better.

Pros

The organization of the take-off items is great. Easy to export the results and easy to use...once you have learned the software. As long as i stick to my workflow i created i do not have any problems.

Cons

If you get off you order of operations or workflow...it can get a bit messy. Use the layers and stick to a color scheme that fits the jobs. figure it out and be consistent with it and it will work amazing.

Very positive experience. It's made my life a whole lot easier. I can easily take off concrete, steel, MEP, etc., and it's a very organized program. It's like coloring for adults.

Pros

This software has made estimating so much more efficient, accurate, and easy. I learned to estimate by hand, and those days were so much harder than now. I can handle so many more trades and estimates alone that I would have been able to just a decade ago.

Cons

There needs to be more symbols available for our use such as Mechanical, Fire Suppression Piping, and Electrical symbols. That would be helpful.

The software is at least a decade out of date when compared to any other industry standard take-off software. Its clunky, non-intuitive, terrible UI and converts any drawings to .TIFF picture files. The exporting of take-offs is an arduous process, no in-software costing solution. It can't handle any BIM files. Its the modern day equivalent to taking off by hand with tracing paper; there's no interaction with the drawing, you're simply drawing shapes over the top of an image.

Pros

The only pro to this software is the marking-up of drawings

Cons

Inability to interact with drawings and a terrible UI.

I work in multi-family construction and need to be able to do quick conceptual estimates and the later detailed estimates that require more takeoff. I've been using OST for the takeoff for the last 11 years. I love it.

Pros

OST is easy to get up and running. It's intuitive and user friendly. I was recently introduced to PlanSwift - a competitor to OST and it was overly complicated. It was hard to figure out how to go in and just take the SF of a room.

With OST it's a breeze to take a simple measurement or do more extensive takeoff without needing an owners manual or even a tutorial.

Cons

Is the difficulty in naming sheets that are imported in. It's cumbersome and time consuming. It also makes it hard to relink to a different folder location.

The high cost for a single license is prohibitive to the freelance estimator and forces us to use alternative programs that aren't as efficient. I wish there was a way to make it cheaper for sole proprietorship businesses in the construction industry.

The On Screen Takeoff program along with the support provided by On Center is a great combo for anyone looking to standardize and get better control of their takeoff and bids. My experience has been nothing but the best from Training, to implementation, and support throughout the past few years.

Pros

Allows me to constantly and quickly take off plans that used to take all day to provide.

Cons

The software has been awesome for me in many ways but I wish it was more report friendly for people who are working outside of the standard databases and reporting schemes. I had to build my database from the ground up and how we export and report that information isn't typical for OST. Trying to build custom reports and exports has been challenging but On Center support was always there to help or at least let me know that I have hit a dead end.

My daily use of the software has made me appreciate the ease of use and reliability of the product.
I can trust the software to provide me with accurate counts and footage for my electrical estimating.

Pros

The easy use of the software, plus any questions are easily linked to a video showing you your answer. If the answer is not available online, a simple phone call to great customer service will provide direction and resolution of any questions or problems.

Cons

Currently I have had no complaints with the software, it works great!

Pros

The Customer Tech help is absolutely outstanding. I am so pleased with every interaction I have had with your company.

Cons

I would like more flexibility in writing notes on the drawings as I do takeoffs. The Callout function often uses too much space on the drawings and clutters things up to much. I would love the opportunity to type a few notes to myself in various (small) sizes as I do my takeoffs.
