StarChapter Association Management Software


 

StarChapter is a cloud-based association management software solution for local or national, professional and trade associations. The system offers membership management, online event registration, email communication and website content management.

StarChapter enables users to plan events and manage a chapter. Chapter administrators can set up meetings or event information prior to the event, email invitations or post announcements. Guests can register or purchase tickets through the website. StarChapter tracks attendance, revenue, member counts and automatically sends receipts during or after the event.

Member information is kept updated and can be organized into different groups based on type, business, committee and more. The solution records attendance and dues and keeps information on file for prospective members.

Contact lists are available for sending out newsletters, event invites, welcome emails and more. The online association survey tool allows users to create surveys directly through the system.

Great for our association chapters!

This has provided association chapters the opportunity to roll in several services into one product creating a more streamlined management for association business. This is great because the chapters are run by volunteers. They are now only managing one system for their members versus multiple.

Cons

The only con we have is not because of the product but because it is run by volunteers. They need a little more assistance since this is not what they do for a living. However, StarChapter has been a great support to them directly, as well!

I have just completed implementation, so I do not have anything least to say about the product or vendor. What I can say is so far, so very good.

Recommendations

Talk to people who are using it and make sure they like the features, functionality, and most of all the usability and user-friendliness of the front-end and back-end.

It's fairly easy and for a one woman show, easy is a necessity. StarChapter is very responsive to any issue I have.

Likes Least

Unfortunately, the system doesn't do everything I need, but it should be able to do more than what it does. I am told the developers will be made aware of my upgrade/change issues, but never hear back as to the status. I wish StarChapter would have hands-on classes at their facility so we can work directly with staff instead of sending in requests, watching video's which sometimes answers my questions.

Recommendations

StarChapter, for the most part is a great platform. The staff is wonderful to work with and very responsive. Definitely dive into the system and find out if it'll work for you. StarChapter works for me, it has it's issues and is limited, but haven't found that perfect platform yet. Star Chapter is about as close to what I need as I have found.

It integrates almost all of our needs into one convenient platform.
The self-help tools and videos are very good, enabling us to get up to speed very quickly
Service tickets are answered promptly
The capability to develop nonmember mailing lists and target specific groups, especially meeting attendees, has been fantastic!

Likes Least

Some of the website features don't meet our expectations. For instance, we have some articles posted that our members would like to print, but attempts to print them yield very poorly formatted documents. Requests for help are answered quickly, but we do often encounter situations where requests must be referred to the developer team.
We used to use Eventbrite, and we loved that it only sent us one bill per event after the event was over. If someone cancelled a week ahead of time, we'd simply delete the registration without having to mess with financials. With StarChapter and its payment partner, each ticket transaction is separate, and refunds or changes are troublesome.

Recommendations

Visit customer sites and compare features. When we were comparing options, no other vendor provided the breadth of services we needed for such a low cost. All others who met our needs were much more expensive.

I really like the ability to assign administrator tasks and then the administrator task bar associated with this feature. It's very helpful to assign leads to tasks on this platform.

Cons

There isn't a free trial option. So although the software is worth the investment, you do have to have the means to jump right in without testing the waters first.

StarChapter has simplified filing, sales and membership issues. Don't know how we did it when it was so manual before.

Pros

I love that all the documents, such as board meeting notes, marketing material and more can be saved on StarChapter. Sometimes it's difficult to contact one of you board members, they may be out on vacation or in meetings all day. Know I can just go into StarChapter and get what I need without having to reach out to other members. It also has a great dashboard that gives me membership details along with sales details.

Cons

It does not allow you to create and mail out CPE certificates for members. This would be an huge plus!

Star Chapter provides segregation of functionality by board position which allows multiple board members to perform their duties securely. Their customer support is excellent!

Pros

It is easy to use and allows our chapter to integrate all the functions we need on one platform.

Cons

Setting up of dues rates annually can be a bit confusing.

The customer service/tech support department is great. They are responsive and problem solvers. One of the great features of this software.

Pros

I like the newsletter feature the most. I can create digital newsletters by template.

Cons

The cons for the software are that it doesn't fit with how our association works. The software is more designed for "chapters" of associations as opposed to a single association. We have COMPANIES as members (we are a 506(c)(6) trade association), and staff of those member companies are also considered members. So the billing/invoicing feature doesn't work for us, nor does the online registration for the most part. I also don't use the mass email feature because we leave it up to our members to create their own accounts, and there are thousands of individuals who might do this. It is easier for me to use Constant Contact for an email database and I have a link on our website's home page that allows people to add themselves quickly to Constant Contact. I also use CC for online registrations. I use QuickBooks for all invoicing and for our membership database. The software witih StarChapter simply doesn't work in the direction I need for our type of association.

We are able to market our events with ease and efficiently. It solved the issue of mass emails. Membership is easier to track and to communicate with those members.

I like StarChapter; it's fees are spot-on and I have recommended it to other associations.

Pros

Top items:
1) Ease of access from any location.
2) Ability to have most of the associations information in one spot
3) Email communication
4) Reports available. Love the graphs for membership, meeting attendance, etc...
5) Love that the members can download the meetings they attended to track their own CEH credits.
6) Love how the support team gets back promptly on issues.
7) The newsletter StarChapter sends out although finding time to read it gets in the way.
8) The ease of using it. It's not hard to train others to use it.

Cons

Least liked:
1) Email verification.
2) The difficulty to find where to change some information and the need to ask what page it is on.
3) Renewing a members dues from administrative point of view has been difficult.
4) Would like notification of any issues concerning members.
5) Screen size for creating an event. Would like it bigger.

Cons

I would love Starchapter to have a pay button on meeting registrations so attendees could pay by credit card after registering. Right now, they have to make the decision to pay at time of registering but it would be nice if they had the pay option link on registration if person decides to pay later on with credit card.

It was a slower start trying to learn the software but the support staff is pretty patient. They do offer training classes. I looked at many other systems but for what you are able to do StarChapter offers great value.

Pros

Once you get the software set up it really gives you power to do most of the things you would want to. There customer support is helpful as long as you are okay with a ticketing type service

Cons

Not the most intuitive type software but sometime with the power to do most things you have to give up some intuitiveness. It does not have open API's to be able to link with conference software or conference software integrated.

The pages used to edit do not resemble your actual website so it's very difficult to find the page/section that you want to edit. The source of my frustrations are directly related to the time wasted trying to find the right tab to click in order to edit/personalize my website.

Start Chapter offers a platform that many chapters of our organization use. It has the framework needed to send group emails, post messages, schedule meetings, and accept payments. This all comes with just one monthly fee that is reasonable.

Cons

Star Chapter isn't always intuitive. Our groups sometimes struggles to determine how to update the correct files, or how to find the files that we want to correct. It could be more user friendly in the administration side.

I like the front end of the software - where you select what you are after

Cons

Too many items require uploading into different areas of the software instead of just one main spot.
There are too many places to search for posting items. Quite honestly there is nothing intuitive at all about the software.

I implemented this for one of the groups that I belong to and have recommended it to another that also implemented it. I am working with 2 other groups to also implement this software. It is a great tool for groups that want to have a one stop shop for members, meetings, communications and the group's website.

Pros

The ease of use and the reporting are good. The meeting registration and security are wonderful.

Cons

I do not really have anything that I dislike.
