Basecamp Software

Basecamp is a real-time communication tool that helps teams stay on the same page; it’s less for traditional project management tasks (e.g., resource planning and long-term scheduling). With to-do-lists, calendaring, due dates and file-sharing, Basecamp provides a way for teams to keep track of priorities and actionable items.

Since 2004, Basecamp has focused on developing a simple interface in which users can create projects, document progress and manage tasks. It is a web-based software, allowing users to sign in anywhere, any time, either through a web browser or through apps compatible with a large number of mobile devices.

Not specific to a single industry, Basecamp can be deployed by any organization that needs to manage a group, including nonprofits, startups and client service firms—and it can even be used by freelancers. Subscriptions are scalable, with tiers for varying amounts of storage and numbers of users.

I do recommend this software for projects requiring collaboration especially when the team is spread out. It allows for multiple team members to quickly get up to speed on changes / progress as well as add needed feedback, etc. No need for team members to be technically savvy.

Pros

Easy to use and great for team collaboration. There's a minimal learning curve which allows team members to focus on messaging and tasks. I used this for a semi-complex website design and launch. There were team members in 4 locations and it worked very well. It's substantially better than relying on email. I've used one other similar software solution for a $10MM project and found basecamp to be a better solution.

Cons

I actually don't have any negatives / cons to convey. If I had to be picky, I'm not sure about the software's ability to handle a very large team. However, from what I've seen and experienced, it would handle most projects / collaborations thrown at it.

Pros

- Very reasonably priced given the features it offers
- Can integrate with other applications/platforms
- Integrated messaging platform

Cons

- The interface is in dire need of an update. It's too easy to get lost in the interface and need to reload the entire platform to figure out where you were.
- There are several ways to communicate with users, and they all feel completely disconnected from one another.
- Basecamp needs to improve their reporting features.

Great software, they've done a great job. Highly recommended

Pros

It's easy to use and very easy to share across companies. We used Basecamp to work and collaborate with outside creative firms. Easy to work together on a project and it's great at allowing you to leave comments, give permissions, and navigate the project.

Cons

Simple system that helps to create, edit and manage a project step by step keeping the team and the clients updated of the development of it. As well as putting the deadlines of a task or the extension of time. Improves communication by making it more feedback and makes work more efficient.

Pros

It contains multiple tools to manage a project in a very organized way through a very clean and attractive interface, thus facilitating the information to the work team in a simple way. I also like the idea of a message section to communicate among the work team and be able to make some kind of consultation or provide new ideas for a new project. It is also very easy to include the client and select tasks for a team within a project.

Cons

Manage many tasks in mobile devices difficult, should make a redesign for more convenience in monitoring the project. It is difficult to find past information such as the discussions but despite these bad points of view, Basecmap still complies with what is required within the organization.

It was a super easy to use tool that I introduced to my team to keep track of our solo and shared projects. I love that you can add comments/files to discussion boards on each project, attach documents to projects and easily get updates on each project. The layout in tiles is easy for me to understand and quickly manage.

Cons

I've been impressed with Basecamp's mail board. I often have to assign tasks to multiple team members. The task manager makes it easy especially with some of our more complex projects. Regardless of what department a team member is in, you can assign different tasks, with different dates, and keep complete track of the assignment without any issues.

Cons

Has a bit of a learning curve however many tutorials so they can certainly help. I am not sure due to the hierarchies if a very large team would be difficult to navigate.

Pros

Basecamp is an integrated project management tool that allows you to bring groups together for collaborations and projects. It has rolled up multiple products into one to create a complete Project management app.

You can easily add users and give them access to specific projects while being an admin to a master account. You can also collaborate on document editing & checklists.

The group communication feature works well for group chats though it lacks a group calling feature. You could easily replace email in a sense while collaborating with multiple people using the group communication feature.

Pricing model is hard to beat. For a flat rate, you get almost unlimited features (though storage is limited) and still get the best of most worlds including group chat, project management, document editing and more.

The check in feature is probably my favorite feature of them all. Being able to get a summarized brief from all team members helps to keep projects in perspective and understand where everyone is at on a timeline. Its also great that at a click of a button, you can quickly ask multiple people for updates.

Cons

Though there are mobile apps, I feel that Basecamp's apps do not really offer a lot more than you would get on the web app. It almost feels like the mobile apps push you back to the web app in the end.

Things like Group chat lack features like video conference calling or audio calls, you have to turn to another app for this, which means something else to pay for.

Storage options might be ok for the price but when you have unlimited users running multiple projects, the 500gb storage finishes up quickly. If there were a few more storage options it would be great.

Our organization overall has been very pleased with Basecamp. It has drastically helped with communication across the organization. We have two separate offices across the state, so Basecamp was meant to help those offices feel more unified, and it has definitely achieved that.

Pros

The task-based aspect of Basecamp - that you can assign and check off activities. The element of "checklists" is also incredibly useful for those who need some direction about what they should be working on (and at what point it is due). It is also helpful to get the review emails to see what others are working on and what activity has occurred on the software while you were away.

Cons

All of the notifications that Basecamp sends, and the difficulty of personalization so that it doesn't clog up your inbox. It took me a while to figure out how to customize the emails so that I wouldn't receive a notification for each small activity that happens. However, once I discovered how to do this, I was much (MUCH) happier with my experience with the software. I would recommend anyone look into this customization as soon as they start using the software to escape these frustrations.

Pros

The problems my office dealt with mostly came down to too many applications to keep track of different things - emails, chat threads, faxes, etc. All of these different applications make things hard to keep track of which lead to gaps in communication and extra work. The programs our team was using just spread things out even more and actually made communicating harder to keep track of. The way basecamp combines all of these tools into a streamlined package made everything so much simpler.

Cons

Nothing. Basecamps is wonderful. It has made communicating as a team so much more efficient and has improved our efficiency and productivity!

Through Basecamp, you can keep a screenshot of multiple projects, as well as create folders and checklists, which generate an organized work space and easy to track and control. It is possible to enter the program as a member of a team with specific tasks, as well as project leader, making it clear who is responsible for the project and simplifying the follow-up for this with the task list function.

Pros

As an equipment and work management tool, it guarantees an easy and accessible integration of the processes, through its multiple levels of categorization, and of a simple and easy-to-use configuration. I love the functions of your homepage, from storage to checklists, because it generates an order on the page and allows you to organize tasks in separate folders. Access to the information that is generated is easy and intuitive to manage. In summary, generating the tasks is simple, as well as selecting where to locate and name them. Its scalability is quite useful and efficient, since individual activities can be generated, even collaborative, integrating more people in the work management, allowing a follow-up.

Cons

Notifications via email can be overwhelming, perhaps notifications through notes that can be seen on the computer without the need for mail would be more useful, and from there go to the application, since it is simpler to enter the system and review notifications.

My overall experience is for this software is quite good since it integrates the tools to communicate/work with our colleagues or classmates.

Pros

The software makes my colleagues and me work more efficiently. For example, we can use this software to let others know our plan for the specific project, and others can make an arrangement for their schedule and complete the work together.

Cons

The problem is that it is not good for those who are not willing to use this software. In this case, we need to talk to others about our schedule for the projects that we are doing again. If more people are using this software, it will be muck better.

Pros

The Fantastic mail board is a staple of Basecamp. we use this to assign tasks to multiple people and the campfire is a capable 'inbox'. It also has a very easy task manager-esque to-do-list makes it easy to keep sight of complex assignments. You can assign multiple people from different departments tasks and due dates and thus we are able to keep track of those complex assignments.
The ability to store files on the cloud for easy retrieval by collaborators is another reason why we opted for this solution. Its a very affordable software if you are an organisation like ours that 'penny' watches.

Cons

Two things I really hate about Basecamp:

1. Pretty puzzles me that it’s a project management software but it has no Ganttchart capability..talk of a doctor without a stethoscope!
2. The one thing I dislike though, is that I can never have visibility of workloads among collaborators, it would be awesome if the folks at basecamp would add the 'flag/priority' button to elevate some of the tasks and ensure quick turnaround between collaborators"
