Slack Software

Slack is a cloud-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Pros

Lot of little things you can do to make it really work for you, ie pin docs, send group messages, the app is solid too.
It basically kills email
I love the reminder feature

Cons

Sometimes I wish it would ask "do you really want to post this" in a multi-group channel
Easy to delete when you make a mistake - but a prompt would be nice
Stop asking me to setup G drive

Pros

Slack is very easy to use and has many features that prove to be beneficial every day. We use Slack more than email because of how easy it is and because its nice to see who's online anywhere in the business.

Cons

The user interface can be updated a little to look more modern and not so crammed. Small price to pay for such a good program.

I use slack to communicate with the tech team at my company. It is easy to use and keeps my coworkers connected.

Pros

Slack is a great way to communicate with coworkers.
You can easily ping someone for a quick question, send information by dropping it in the text box, or make a video or phone call

Cons

I have not had any problems with slack. The only issue I have found with slack is that not everyone on my company is on it. The tech team loves it, but some of the other departments prefer to message through a different system. It would be nice to all be on the same messaging system.

Pros

The functionality and integration of slack is definitely the best part about it. We can automate and streamline all communication channels we implement via slack, we also implemented bots that monitor our services and can be queried directly via the slack client.

Cons

The free tier of slack only allows up to 10,000 messages in your history to be captured which can be a nuisance if you don't keep track of your messages (we have a bot to make sure our messages get cleaned up when the channel is about to hit 10k).

Overall Slack has really helped leverage our business and keep the communication seamless among our team!

Pros

We use this product on our work computers and on mobile and love how easy it is to communicate between our team! It is easy to organize the work space via channels, which you can categorize according to the current project or business needs. You can also have a private conversation with 1 team member or multiple in personal chats. The best features are file integration in with you can load documents into the conversation or channel, each user can add their input real time and upload their work as well.

Cons

Wish the free version did not limit your number of messages, but understand why since no one would purchase the paid version if it did not.

It is best used as a chat channel with humans or as a place to integrate on the various channels your communication with devices and servers which report to you.

Pros

I love this app. I started using it as my co-op mentor used it to organize group meetings and also to private message me. After graduation, I still used it but switched workspaces entirely leaving the old behind. In Slack, I can organize projects by #channels and my @partners working on projects can chat about developments which everyone can read and importantly have a permanent record of. We integrated it with Freshdesk to ensure customer requests are handled promptly when I worked for one company and the best use is my integration with IFTTT. I had D-Link motion detector plugged in the common area as my former landlord would always sneak into our suite and I would always have a few seconds of advanced warning to put on more clothes just before he appeared. Importantly, I had a record on my #motionsenor channel that someone was creeping outside my suite usually in the early hours of the morning. Now I manage a few cloud servers and with webhook integration, they report their progress on tasks to me and all I do is sit back monitor them.

Cons

I actually do not have any issues with Slack. I use as one of my many apps that I use and may not use all the functions available and also as I am on the free plan am limited to the number of intergration with other apps that I can do.

Cons

Sometimes you get so excited about what it can do, you find some integration it can't do so easily. It's a great tool for collaborating with teammates. I like how not only is it a robust chat system, but you're also able to spin off threads within conversations in case you need to talk to anyone on a particular point without derailing the current conversation in the main chat group.

Cons

The app on windows is occasionally laggy. This doesn't really present a problem, but can be rather annoying. It really only happens when launching the app or when switching to it. It doesn't happen very frequently, say once every week or two, but it can be jarring to wait an extra 10 seconds when you're not expecting it.

Slack is a great tool that has drastically improved our team communication and responsiveness.

Pros

Slack is awesome because it makes team collaboration a breeze. We have a free instance of Slack and a paid instance of Slack at our institution. Slack makes it easy to troubleshoot bugs, discuss new features, and plan for upcoming releases. Being able to create private channels to work through software issues is crucial to responding quickly to bug reports without having to constantly reply all in a never-ending email thread. Slack also has excellent app integrations that are easy to install and excellent.

Cons

The price is for Slack is starting to detract our organization. There are other options in the market that may do everything we need for either way less or included in our licensing agreements. The Slack interface is also starting to feel old also. A refresh would be welcome.

Would definitely recommend for smaller size classes or business teams. Great way to put out ideas and share findings.

Pros

I used Slack in a class of mine... I think it is an incredible way to share findings, thoughts, questions, etc... It is an easy way to communication and because they have different "threads", it is easy to organize different subjects/ideas/segments of the class.

Cons

It was a bit confusing at first. Once my teacher explained how to navigate the tool, it became easy to use. As someone who thinks of themselves as technologically savvy, I was surprised that I was confused in the beginning. The confusion came from the "threads", which are essentially like different pages for different topics.

Your team will pretty much have to be in the system at all times or they will fall behind. Slack is the primary means of internal team communication at my company. We conduct our daily scrums there. It certainly has helped eliminate my email inbox from blowing up like it used to in the past.

Pros

Slack is a nifty tool that has helped reduce the frustrations of inbox overload in my company. Our team uses this as a primary form of communication and collaboration. We have channels organized by projects and that allows us to neatly segregate our communications keeping things within context. The tool also allows us to directly upload files and find them much later too if needed. Conversations can be threaded to keep things relevant for all. Slack allows several add-ons like bots that enable us to log what we are working on daily. That shoots a summarized response to the team lead giving her an accurate picture of what the whole team is working on at all times.

Cons

We use a paid version of slack, so the 10k message limitation does not affect us. Slack can become a distraction when teams do not use it well. It becomes an attention hog if teams post meaningless comments on there. There is an ability to snooze channels, but I haven't personally used it much.

We are using Slack as a chat tools as well as a collaboration tool. The teams that use it simplistically are very successful. It's a good tool that can be spun up very quickly and can bring together groups of users who are not in the same organization.

Pros

Slack is incredibly easy to set up, has a pretty solid free version, and is pretty intuitive for people new to online collaboration and communication tools. You can do simple calls in the free version; video calls in the paid version. You can create private and public channels, integrate many tools within slack, and set up bots for routine questions and actions. One of the best things about Slack is it's reach. You can quickly set it up and reach across organizations with it. But what everyone in our org loves is the ability to custom make emojis! Anything that adds a little fun to the workplace gets a thumbs up from me!

Cons

Slack does not do everything. It does not replace teleconferencing software or document management software. But it allows so much that people end up using the tool for purposes it just isn't great at. If I compare Slack to MS Teams from a business perspective - I would go with Teams. Slack is not backed by a document repo with structures and tagging for the documents. It's good for one on one calls but not for group calls.
