## WooCommerce Pros and Cons

We analyzed 1,042 verified reviews for WooCommerce to find out what actual users really think.

Select to learn more

Flexible Design Options

Users appreciate WooCommerce’s deep customization capabilities, from themes to plugins. The platform enables tailored storefronts, product pages, and checkout experiences. With WordPress integration, business owners can personalize layouts, features, and workflows to match their brand and operational needs, supporting both simple and complex stores.

Expansive Plugin Ecosystem

WooCommerce offers extensive integration options, with a vast library of plugins and extensions for WordPress. Users can easily add payment gateways, shipping tools, marketing features, and more, tailoring their store to specific needs. The platform’s flexibility and compatibility with third-party services make it highly adaptable for diverse business models.

Cost-Effective Store Setup

WooCommerce is free to start and allows users to build a functional online store without monthly fees. Many essential features are available at no cost, and additional plugins are often affordable. This makes it a popular choice for small businesses and those on a budget, though some advanced features may require paid add-ons.

Resource-Heavy And Slowdowns

WooCommerce’s reliance on plugins and WordPress can lead to slow site performance, especially as stores grow or add more extensions. Users report lag, longer load times, and increased resource demands. Large product catalogs and multiple plugins may cause conflicts, making optimization and troubleshooting necessary for smooth operation.

Complex Order Workflows

Managing orders and shipping in WooCommerce can be complicated, with users reporting difficulties in setup, customization, and workflow. Shipping rates, order notifications, and integration with payment or shipping providers often require extra plugins or manual adjustments, leading to frustration and inefficiencies for store owners.

Steep Learning Requirements

WooCommerce can be challenging for beginners, especially those without technical or WordPress experience. Users often face a steep learning curve, requiring time to understand features and configuration. Advanced customization may demand coding skills or developer support, making it less accessible for non-technical users.

Pros:

The fact that it's free to start out with. The flexibility is great, and SO MANY PLUGINS are wonderful. I love that it's universal and that I can integrate it with so many other services.

Cons:

The UX/UI is SO overwhelming when starting out. It takes quite a while to get the hang of it.

It has been great. I have been working with WooCommerce for over 10 years. I started using it in school (ICT education), my job and now for my own webshops. I like that fact that for everything there is an additional plugin created by themselves, or 3rd parties.

Pros:

The flexibility, huge userbase that makes sure there is almost always a plugin for something you want and the fact that almost any important tool can integrate with it.

Cons:

The fact that some features are not standard and you need to buy plugins in order to get these specific features.

Reasons for switching to WooCommerce

Because of integrations. We wanted to connect our prestashop to channeldock which wasn't possible at that time. This was like the 5/6th time we couldn't integrate with external softwares so we had to switch.

Pros:

Woocommerce allows even the smallest of shops to push their products across the internet.

Cons:

It can rarely be used "out of the box". It takes a lot to set up and isn't for unknowledgeable users. But then, I'm happy to set it up for our clients which means all they need to do is edit their inventory or add new products.

Reasons for choosing WooCommerce

Pros:

WooCommerce offers great value for money and a flexible service. It is free to install and you can customise options to your preference. It is easy to use and set up. WooCommerce supports many different payment options and methods, supporting major credit cards, digital wallets, and bank transfers. We have never experienced any payments being declined using WooCommerce which is vital to ensure smooth sales and maximising income.

Cons:

To get the best out of WooCommerce and all the features, you do need to get the add on extensions. These are paid for and require some technical expertise to maximise their efficiency and functionality. It works fine for our smaller set-up as we do not require many of these additional features.

Amazing value with endless customisation and a wonderful community

4

WooCommerce is a great platform overall with tons of plugins, integrations and an amazing API. Often, it is thought of as an option for smaller webshops, however, we have managed to scale up to 100,000+ products. This does mean a lot of customisation, architectural service separation and a lot. of API usage but it shows that WooCommerce is more than capable of scaling.

5

Functionality

Pros:

WooCommerce is a great platform with tons of plugins, integrations and an amazing API. As well as this, it is completely free to use and customise which, considering the vast features, is unbelievably good value compared to other eCommerce platforms. Lastly, the community and support are second to none.

Cons:

When scaling a more complex build, WooCommerce can require a lot of customisation and at times can be buggy. Also, the use of the WP database structure serverly limited performance, though much of this is being addressed with the HPOS update WooCommerce are doing.

Reasons for choosing WooCommerce

Cost, developer community/knowledge and features.

Reasons for switching to WooCommerce

Magento is extremely complex to maintain and has constant issues.

A good entry level e-commerce solution but struggles when your needs get more complex and requires pricy upgrades.

3

It is easy to get something basic up but when you need to get real world implementations that get even slightly complex I feel like Woo falls flat. It is good if you want a very basic e-commerce site. But it struggles when things get a little more complex like with shipping, multi-sizes and colors, etc.

2

Functionality

Pros:

WooCommerce is kind of the go-to to easily stand up an e-commerce shop on WordPress, so getting a service up quickly is kind of its speciality, but its flaws become apparent quickly.

Cons:

Their freemium model is clunky and to get even some basic functionality the bills start piling up quickly. It also struggles to integrate with other inventory systems. Clients I've consulted with using Woo are consistently having inventory syncing problems if they have brick and mortar locations which results in a lot of dissatisfaction.

Reasons for switching to WooCommerce

Thought it would be a more robust solution but it turned out it was easier to intregrate square's shop into Wordpress than into Woo.

Thousands of products (or) just a couple, Woocommerce got your covered

5

Woocommerce and I go a long way! I have seen it grown for many years. In comparison to Magento and others, Woocommerce is the best. Some of the other open source products break things after updates and one would have to rush to fix everything but Woocommerce is stable for the most part. Updates rarely break things if you have considered stable plugins and eco system. For a business, at the end of the day, they want their store up and running with lots of orders incoming. Woocommerce delivers that!

4

Pros:

I like the fact that it is open source and how it let's developers customise the product to any extent. With WordPress as a core, actions and filters, it can be customised to any business needs. I've worked with tens of businesses that have massive product catalogue and it never lets me down.

Cons:

Woocommerce has the biggest market share in the world. Despite that, it lacks a basic native feature of inventory logging. While there are plugins available but this should have been shipped by Woocommerce team themselves. After all, native feature get support like no others.

Reasons for choosing WooCommerce

Ability to control and customise. While others provide a great service for some use cases, with the limitations, it won't work for all the use cases.
