Easy Remote Support

PROS

Such an easy product to use, I have been using it for a number of years now and will continue to do so! I have a list of all my servers and can just double-click to launch into them. When it comes to providing remote - ad-hoc support - I can simply direct my client to a website - give them a code and we're up and running in no time. This is so much easier than asking people to install an app first, and then give me a code and password etc. Just simple remote support.

CONS

The only minor issue is that I sometimes can't copy/paste between my host machine and the remote machine... this could be due to my Mac making a restriction tho!

Reasons for switching to ISL Light

Cost was the main issue - Teamviewer's on-going costs can be very high - ISL is considerably more affordable. It also provides some better functionality, as Teamviewer requires the software to be installed first before you can provide support, not all clients understand how to do that!

A solid product for quick remote support

Much better than we expected for the price, has done everything we wanted it to and more, although there are always areas for improvement.

PROS

Excellent value for money! Very easy to transfer files, just drag and drop. Quick and easy to access unattended machines. Secure with multiple password layers. Once deployment is set up, it's quickly scalable. Concurrent user pricing model is much better than per user. Customer support is always available and helpful via online chat.

CONS

Unable to see any info about unattended computers such as the username of the logged in user, or a screen preview. Deployment is a little fiddly, it would be easier if you could just download a customised MSI without having to wrap up the commands. There is no easy way to transfer existing ISL clients from one support provider to another. Sometimes the client needs restarting to get all features working again (especially Ctrl+Alt+Del). Product names are a little confusing, which version do users/customers need to install? No easy customisation options with company logos etc.

We mostly support people in the USA, Denmark, Arab emirates.

I can not prepare a remote access in advance. I have to open software, generate session ID and then wait a really long time for the installer to tell the customer to download it. Generating link is nice, but I still need to be there at the beginning. It is really confusing whenever session drops, sometimes it reconnects and writes some data into chat window? why chat window? Whenever you have chat open and remote and also file transfer it is really hard to manage all those windows. Audio chat would also be nice. Connecting to some remote in Arab Emirates can take up to 5 minutes. Having multiple administrators use the same Session ID would be also a nice feature.

Real thoughts on isl

PROS

I love that you can self host ISL and your license comes with everything without a bunch of addons. The service has been super stable and easy to administrate/update with no real issues.

CONS

The biggest drawback with ISL is that third parties have literally 0 support for it. I work with Apple computers and MDM servers have nothing setup meaning you have to setup everything from scratch. I also have not found much documented about this from ISL.

Amazing. The best remote solution I have used.

PROS

ISL is extremely easy to deploy. It is versatile and works on pretty much ANY OS. I use it daily on Linux (OpenSUSE) and Windows.

CONS

We need a flatpak and/or snap package! Very receptive developer.

Reasons for switching to ISL Light

Reliability and cost were a bit factor. We had some older machines and ISL has a "small footprint" feature that was critical to our success.

Use ISL Remote Desktop to perform Remote Support

We have been using ISL for around 5 years, and it is the mainstay of our ability to provide remote support to our clients. We have also been able to allow users to access their own computer when working away from their desk using some of the tools provided by ISL, which makes the product a hit with our clients as well.

PROS

The ability to group users together, to easily assign who on our support team can access which computers, and the ease of transferring files from ourselves onto the remote computer. And perhaps the greatest value is that we can set up the various parameters in a command line executable, so we don't need to set them up by hand every time.

CONS

It can sometimes take a few minutes between the user providing access and it appearing as an available remote system on our console

Reason for choosing ISL Light

At the time, Teamviewer was priced based on the number of named users, whereas ISL was priced on the number of simultaneous users, regardless of who they are. This better suits our operation. It also is a more secure product, as the remote software is tied in to our license, whereas with TeamViewer, anyone can log on to the remote computer if they have the password. We are always concerned with the security of these types of products, and we consider this to be a safer approach.

Reasons for switching to ISL Light

LogMeIn changed their pricing algorithm, and it meant that we were going to be charged up to 800% of our renewal to carry on using it. We have actually found ISL to be just as good at a very reasonable cost for our operation.

IT support worker using ISL daily

Overall, ISL has been a pleasure to work with and has been an essential tool to support individuals and businesses, especially during the COVID lockdowns when so many people moved to working from home. Whenever I needed support in the early days of using ISL, I found the online chat facility to be excellent, quickly answering questions and resolving my issues.

PROS

Integration ISL with our existing business was very straightforward. I appreciate being able to have multiple sessions open simultaneously. I particularly liked the pointing device, monitor switching, video session recording, and chat facility which remains on the customer's screen even after the session has ended. Being able to transfer files is great and the functionality to be able to switch so that a supported customer can view my desktop has also proved useful on occassion.

CONS

Working with apple devices can be difficult but there are some good guides on the ISL website to help navigate the settings and permissions that need to be granted by the client.

Reason for choosing ISL Light

ISL seemed to offer a superior product at a very fair price. The demo period was long enough to assure me that ISL was the best choice and the on-boarding process was seemless.

End of licensing period and looking for greater functionality and better licensing arrangement with unlimited number of stored client machines.

First choice if you want to host it yourself and are willing to make minor sacrifices

Remote IT consulting and IT services can be carried out easily with the software, including the good feeling of having the infrastructure under your own control

PROS

The friendly and helpful business support, the open ear for suggestions for improvements, the possibility of running the software inexpensively on your own servers, the automatic session recovery when a remote-controlled PC is restarted (very useful!), the cross-platform use of remote maintenance (Linux , Windows, macOS, Android), The update mechanism of the ISL AlwaysON module (comparable to TeamViewer Host) from the client works excellently

CONS

Unfortunately, some comfort functionalities that you are used to from e.g. TeamViewer are missing, the software (ISL Light Client under Linux) also likes to crash from time to time, the operation and the designation of menu items is rather "technical" in some places and not intuitively understandable

Privacy concerns, poor business support, TeamViewer doesn't offer a cost-effective way to run a "self-hosted" solution for remote maintenance, TeamViewer got way to expensive over time (I was also tricked into yearly updates) and it totally relies on centralized infrastructure

My review

We use it only for remote support, but we know that there are a lot of other functionalities. It is perfect for our use, it is offer all what we need and it is easy to use.

PROS

It just work almost everywhere. It is also very easy to configure some next generation firewalls as in most cases, you can just tell that you are using ISL. Very friendly for helpdesk and for customer.

CONS

Maybe downloading client. Some customers sometimes have a problem to find where is located this download.

For us ISL Online is a 9 out of 10 star solution

PROS

We use the self-hosted version of ISL and our customers really appreciate the fact that security-critical connections do not have to be routed via a third-party provider. The usage is simple and self-explanatory. And customers can explicitly disable the use of ISL in the firewall if they want to. This creates trust and is not possible in this form with competitors.

CONS

Screen sharing doesn't really work well for us. We might have to take a closer look again. Accessing it on the go via the Android app is impractical. And we also lack remote control from mobile devices.

The self-hosted version of Teamviewer was far too expensive at the time. Our customers demanded a solution that did not connect via a gateway at the manufacturer.

Great for on-demand remote support

Work's great for us - we have a link on our website for customers to use which takes them to a branded ISL page for them to enter the support code. Has the ability to take full admin access as well which is great for those locked down scenarios. The new iOS/Android option is fantastic for supporting mobile apps!

CONS

No real issues from our side - if our help desk staff were able to easily see who is using the sessions that would help us. (Occasionally someone might leave a session open which uses a license)

Just didnt like it! We were previously using an integrated version of ISL with Barracuda Managed Workplace so moving to ISL was pretty seamless for us.

Don't judge it by its looks

If you are old enough the GUI might remind you of Operating Systems long gone - underneath is a top-class software that has no need for embellishment. It's easy to install, deploy, and use. There's a lot of features and more are added over time but most important the core functionality and security evolve constantly.

PROS

I like the ease of use, no distracting bells and whistles. Whether Remote Support or Unattended Access, everything you need is there. It works reliably and perfectly with multi-monitor configurations.

CONS

There are no real cons. Even though the interface is minimalist you can do all you need.

Great Value Remote Support Software

I used to use LogMeIn and was approached by ISL to try out there product initially I said no then the price of the other product had its third increase in twelve months which made it too expensive. Since then I haven't looked back, I can connect to my clients quickly and securely and provide the type of service my clients expect as if I was there in person. I must use the software three to four times a day on average and now most of my support work is done remotely saving journey time and fuel cost. It's made me more efficient.

PROS

ISLOnline has all the features of it's competitors but at a more competitive price. The software is continually being developed and improved and can be branded to suit your company needs. It supports remote connections to multi platform and devices and has a chat platform for you to converse with your customers which can be added to your website. Technical support is first class and they are extremely helpful when you first begin using the software. You get an evelauation period to trial the fully featured software and this can be extended if needs be so you can be sure. Did I mention the price?

CONS

I would like to see some improvements in the Remote support logging page as I use this to generate invoicing information and it takes an export of the log and some reformatting to get it in the state I need.

Reliable product, competitively priced, easy to use

This allows our team of 4 to easily support hundreds of end users each day with all manner of issues. We are able to integrate the download from our website as well as invite our clients to support sessions via email.

PROS

Easy to use on Windows devices. Good information fed back through dashboard. Quick, reliable connection. Spans all screens for remote computer.

CONS

If the extra cost for multi connections per user were cheaper we would definitely go for it. However we do appreciate that the overall cost is very competitive vs other products.

Connection using the AlwaysOn setup is excellent and very quick to establish a connection to a remote PC.

CONS

On demand client setup could do with some prompts on the administrators end to describe what the user might be seeing. Often a user will start to read out a security warning and ask what to do so would be good to know what these might be as they seem to differ slightly, maybe from browser to browser.Initial setup to connec to a Mac is tricky and seems to involve changing system settings for screen recording. A quick link to help for this would be useful when establising a connection to save time.

Hi Paul, thanks for your feedback. Security warnings on macOS are due to Gatekeeper. Applications installed outside the App Store must now be notarized by Apple to launch seamlessly. Currently, ISL Network Start is notarized, which means that any ISL Online application downloaded through Network Start is trusted by Gatekeeper. If an ISL Online product is downloaded directly (we recommend using Network Start), Gatekeeper will prevent it from running. We recommend users to join the session via the "Join page" to avoid such warnings: https://help.islonline.com/19201/161763#macos-5 To start the ISL Light Client, two permissions must be added to enable a fully functional remote session. You'll be prompted to allow both permissions in your Mac's Security and Privacy settings in the "Accessibility" and "Screen Recording" sections. ISL Light Server License - Remote Support at a Glance

With ISL Always On I can access my computers (even via RDP) and work remotely. In the end, I would really recommend it if you are looking for a solution that you can run yourself.

PROS

In 2011 we were looking for a solution which was able to run on on own server. Finally, after comparing existing solutions (also from price perspective) we started with ISL Light.Since then we experience a good and stable solution, which is regularly updated and maintained. The software is running without issues and is just doing what we expect from it - helping us in remote support, working from home (also via RDP) and my favorite aspect -> installed in my own environment.

CONS

The admin area to update and maintenance the software could be a little bit more modern, but finally everything is reachable and working.

Using ISlRemote daily

PROS

Very easy to use, simple to install, easy to remotely control a new computer using "invite". Isl light is also available for installation on remote computer for unattended control and on local computer so you don't have to login on a web page but juste start a local software.

CONS

Only information available is a complete description about the remote computer (CPU, ram, processes and so on) and lats connection time. Impossible to know how many time spend remotely by computer or by group on a period of time. Impossible to know wich computer have been accessed last month.
