### About PDQ Deploy & Inventory

If you're a sysadmin responsible for keeping Windows machines patched, organized, and running smoothly — and most of those machines live on your local network or connect via VPN — PDQ Deploy & Inventory was built for you.

The on-prem endpoint management tool has been a staple for IT professionals for over a decade, trusted by teams in education, government, manufacturing, healthcare, and finance to handle the repetitive but critical work of patch management and software deployment.

Common use cases: automated third-party patching and Windows Cumulative Update deployment, software inventory and compliance auditing, dynamic device group management, script execution across targeted Windows endpoints, and recurring maintenance automation for domain-joined fleets.

Here's how it works: PDQ Inventory scans every Windows machine on your network and builds a live, searchable picture of your environment — hardware specs, installed apps, OS versions, Active Directory attributes, and anything else you define via custom scanners. Dynamic collections automatically group devices by criteria you set, so you always know which machines are out of date or out of compliance. PDQ Deploy uses those...

collections as deployment targets, letting you silently push software updates and Windows Cumulative Updates, run scripts, and automate recurring maintenance on a schedule — no end-user interruption required. The Package Library includes 500+ pre-built, pre-tested packages covering both popular third-party applications and Windows server and workstation patching, so one tool handles your full Windows update cycle. What sets D&I apart is its on-prem, self-hosted architecture. There's no agent to install on every device and no cloud dependency for managing your local fleet. It's designed for environments where devices are domain-joined, network-accessible, or reachable via VPN — and where IT teams want deep customization and fast execution and a self-hosted setup is the right fit. PDQ also offers PDQ Connect — a separate, cloud-native product for teams managing remote or hybrid fleets. Connect uses a lightweight agent and works over the internet without requiring a VPN, making it purpose-built for devices that are rarely or never on the corporate network. Unlike PDQ Connect, PDQ Deploy & Inventory does not require an agent on endpoints and is purpose-built for on-prem and VPN-connected environments. The two products serve different environments and can be used alongside each other. PDQ Deploy & Inventory is licensed per sysadmin with unlimited endpoint access. One license covers both products and includes the full Package Library. Support includes extensive documentation, an active community, video tutorials, and direct support channels. A 14-day free trial is available at pdq.com.

Pros:

There are no agents to install on systems being inventoried and it is installed locally on your own network (even just a local desktop) which make a it quick to install and keeps all the communications and data within your local network.

Cons:

Because it is agentless there are issues when trying to inventory systems that are removed from the local network, e.g. Home workers.

Pros:

Where to start! Love the preconfigured Collections that lets us know about which most common applications are out of date, and then we can literally right-click and Select PDQ Deploy to update them.Very easy program to use and I love the reporting side of it.

Cons:

There could be more commonly used Reports straight out of the box, but not that big of a deal as it's easy to create your own and run against a collection.

Reasons for choosing PDQ Deploy & Inventory

Pricing and ability to do what I need it to do.

Pros:

Ease of deployment of custom software, not managed by SCCM

Cons:

I only have 3 Cons:1. It is two seperate programs (Inventory & Deploy), and allthough there is some integration, we still need to synchronize variables manually.2. The missing ability to use LDAPS intstead of old deprecated LDAP.3. I would love to be able to put the databases on our Enterprise MSSQL Cluster Server, instead of these local SQLite databases.

I absolutely love it, but you have to have PDQ Inventory with it! If you want full IT Godhood, you have to both parts. Thankfully the price means it won't break the budget, heck we buy laptops for more than the yearly cost of both of these.

Reasons for choosing PDQ Deploy & Inventory

We went with PDQ because the price was perfect, and the functionality was everything we needed.

Cons:

\-> Hard to think of anything, this thing WORKS. Reminds me of Windows 7 when it came out, kicked ass out of the box (and kicks ass even today). We're on a 4 year old version of PDQ and even with all the missing updates, it still works very well.

Reasons for choosing PDQ Deploy & Inventory

Most intuitive, most easy to understand, most efficient, least least least expensive, best documentation.

It has mostly been positive. There are a few pain points that we're still trying to figure out, such as stale DNS records for workstations. But besides this we're quite happy with the product.

Functionality

Pros:

We've been using PDQ Deploy/Inventory for the past couple of years to manage our employee machines as well as our Windows servers. The ability to push out a new piece of software, or to patch older software with just a few click has been invaluable with how much time it's saved us.

Cons:

With a lot of our employee's working from home during and now after the pandemic, one short-coming of the software is that there is a complete lack of management for remote devices. If the workstation is not on the "local" network with the PDQ server it is impossible to manage. Having an agent that phones home to the PDQ server and handles all tasks would be the ideal solution to this.

Reasons for choosing PDQ Deploy & Inventory

The catered library of software, and the ease of integration into our AD environments was a significant part of the decision, but also the community recommendations and reviews on Reddit and other sources as well.

Functionality

Pros:

We like the fact that they create so many patches and software deployment packages on their end. It saves us so much time, and it just works. I haven't had a single issue with the software and it's very cost effective.

Cons:

When we first set up the inventory scanning, we kicked it off and it almost locked up the server we installed the software on. We are a large environment so it doesn't surprise me, but it did take a long time, and I wasn't sure if it was going to work for awhile. We ended up leaving over a weekend to scan though, and it ended up figuring itself out.

Reasons for choosing PDQ Deploy & Inventory

We didn't really know there was an alternate out there. We were referred to PDQ by another school district.

Reasons for switching to PDQ Deploy & Inventory

The efficiency of PDQ making patches and software packages saved us a lot of time. SCCM can be difficult to use as well. We still have SCCM, but we use PDQ for a lot of things now, that SCCM used to do for us.
