It is perfect for drawing projects, has a wide range of templates that make it easier for you to work and all the types of diagrams you need (at least it is for my IT area), it has a desktop and online version that allows you to work in any place, it is very useful. #### Ratings breakdown - Ease of use: 4/5 - Value for money: 3/5 - Customer support: 4/5 - Functionality: 4/5 #### Pros SmartDraw is a very complete plication for all types of diagrams that you need, has great virtues with respect to Visio that can be considered the number one in the market or at least used, when you need to diagram a project from the basic algorithm to the more complex gantt diagrams , this tool is very useful, it makes you much easier in work (in my experience much easier to use than Visio) the connection between diagrams is simpler, since finishing a diagram makes it much easier to do the following, has a wide range of options and templates that help you in the creation process, contributing to the development of diagrams for systems that you are going to develop, a very useful tool for projects where you need to correctly capture what you want to develop, use it, try it for yourself. #### Cons Its main against is the price, the full version is very expensive although it allows you to enjoy the desktop version and its cost is very high, I think you should download it to compete more in the market. I give them a brief introduction and show them where to find certain tools, but that's about it. Some likely don't even need that much. The desktop looks like other programs they use which makes it really easy for them. #### Cons I would like it to have a 3D option when working with floorplans. I would like to have that progression for my students. I would also like to have a feature that allows me to crop around the images. Being able to have multiple students work on the same floorpan at the same time would be helpful. #### Reasons for choosing SmartDraw My classes are semester long. I don't have time to teach AutoCAD to middle school students and get in all the content. No incentive was offered Unfortunately, the interaction began to feel as though I was communicating with an automated or AI-driven support agent following a predetermined script rather than someone considering what I was actually asking. I cannot know whether this was in fact AI, but responses repeatedly returned to the same standard position without addressing the alternatives I proposed. When I explained why the trial could not validate my particular use case, I was simply directed back to the trial. That is particularly disappointing because I remain genuinely interested in the product. My frustration is not that SmartDraw has failed my test — it is that, despite several attempts, I have been unable to properly test whether it can meet my requirements before purchasing. On paper, it looks potentially well suited to my organisational design work. #### Cons The pre-sales support has been extremely frustrating. I want to use SmartDraw to generate large and complex organisational charts and provided a specific example involving an approximately 270-position Excel hierarchy with linked subcharts. The trial does not allow me to adequately validate the full use case, yet I was repeatedly directed back to the trial, even after explaining that it only allows me to test approximately 20 positions. Support also repeatedly told me that SmartDraw does not provide one-on-one demonstrations. I therefore offered to arrange a group of potential customers for a demonstration, specifically overcoming the stated objection that demonstrations are not provided one-on-one. That proposal was simply not addressed. I was also repeatedly told that SmartDraw does not provide online training, despite the fact that I had never requested training. For the most part it is beginner friendly and quick to use. Great for visualizing literally anything you could think of. Latest update provides even more customizable options. #### Cons User interface could be more streamlined, I constantly have to hit other tabs to use tools/options that I feel should be lumped together (like editing text, all text editing and formatting options should be together, not under separate tabs). The program does lag if you’re using it for a prolonged period of time. Searching for things is really frustrating, especially how you can simply change a word to plural and get an entire new set of symbols. It is very intuitive and whenever we deploy it to a new user, they are instantly able to maneuver around it quickly. And since they moved to a cloud-based SaaS platform, we don't have to worry about updates or patches #### Cons SmartDraw was not available for Single-Sign-On when we first procured the software. And the software was installed locally. That was an issue for our Cybersecurity team. With SSO not available, updates and patches had to be monitored closely. But that was eventually addressed and it is no longer an issue. So now we no not have any COns to list #### Reasons for switching to SmartDraw Cost and ease of deployment were attractive. Regardless, SmartDraw is more than just a substitute for Visio; it's a robust app with a flatter learning curve than I expected. I was able to easily create the diagram and find the icons that were perfect for my purposes. SmartDraw anticipated the features I needed, which helped reduce the time I spent completing my project. The tutorials and help engine also helped me visualize my end-product more easily. I am now using SmartDraw to build a Gantt chart to help me manage my project. Again, I have used MS Project and MS Excel for this in the past, and I am pleased that I can now do everything right in SmartDraw. #### Cons So far, I haven't found anything significantly lacking in SmartDraw. If I do find something that I don't like as I continue to use the program, I will update my review. #### Reasons for choosing SmartDraw Canva is supposed to be easy to use, but it isn't for me. No incentive was offered The only benefit I have received is when I quickly print what I am working on, so that this horribly unstable and unpredictable program will not just lose it and delete even saved work from its memory. When you want to make certain measurements, you will never be able to do so, because it only allows "anchored" points to be measured - not the item or space you wish to measure. It is impossible to scale down their furniture selections/templates because they have it set to scale down the width, when all you want to change is the length. I learned every feature and applied all of the program's features. It is likely that you could get a beginning design to give to someone, as a simple floor plan, if that is what you need. But be sure to print it to preserve your work after each little change. #### Cons Customer service is practically nil and there is no "help" or troubleshooting. If you try to contact them for support, you have to wait and see if they will send you an email the next day - and they usually won't. If you get the email, it does not remotely address the trouble or offer to talk you through it if their "solution" or instruction is not on point. Really disappointing. There is no auto save unless you are working in the Cloud for this program. Further, it constantly just stops and closes itself - and dumps all of your work during that session, even if you have been saving! So, then the hours of work are permanently lost - no kidding, EVEN if you pushed save. If you use it, you must remember to save, save, save - after each little line or inclusion and then print. Then close the program before its instability causes it to just close itself as to the design you are working on. If you don't close it down, you will lose all of your work. Then - get this - when you reopen a file after it has decided to shut down, it says that there is a recovered work file and asks if you want to open it and recover it. If you say "yes" the program shuts down again, over and over and over. SmartDraw is the first chart making software I used and I used it for almost all my chart/ diagram requirements for a long time. Though I used this for creating mind-maps most of the time, it did contain all the tools one would require for any type of chart. The software does need some getting used to but once you're familiar with it, it does save a lot of time. If you're not used to a dedicated chartmaker, give this one a try. If you use too many JPEG images within the file the system struggles to convert to PDF. (which isn't the case with my other design software). They gave me a program to remove the software and a link to re-install each time, sometimes worked well for a few times but then the crashing started again. You can get started straight away adding walls and dimensions. #### Cons It is utterly useless if you actually want anything precise. I'm an architectural designer, and the most basic thing I need to be able to do, even if I'm just measuring up an existing building, is change the thickness of the walls, but this doesn't seem to be possible! Without even this basic feature, it's just an utterly useless piece of software to me. After seeing this software, though, I realise why many estate agent's floorplans are so poor. If they use software like this, there just isn't the amount of flexibility within the software even to draw a normal house, let alone anything which is complex or has a variety of unique features. I think SmartDraw really need to up their game, and in doing so, could enhance the quality of estate agents floorplans for everyone! #### Vendor response Hi Simeon, Sorry your trial of SmartDraw did not go as you had hoped. You can change the thickness of the walls by choosing Line (between Fill and Effects) under the Home tab and then More from the dropdown menu if you want to specify an exact thickness. SmartDraw was a great tool to get ideas "on paper" without having to draw it out, erase changes and store the diagrams in a file folder.
