About PracticeMaster

PracticeMaster is an on-premise solution that helps small to midsize law firms manage and track phone records, costs and research notes, among other case information. It provides a firm-wide calendar, which allows users to filter and color-code appointments/tasks based on clients, staff members and activities.

PracticeMaster's time tracking functionality lets lawyers record time spent on multiple tasks, including phone calls, research and reading emails, facilitating workflow efficiency. With the report writer, users can create custom reports based on client details, appointments, to-do-lists or pending assignments and export them to PDF, HTML, Excel or text file formats. Once you learn it - you'll love it!

Overall, it is a wonderful program. At my old firm we had to use 3 different programs to do what PracticeMaster does alone. It's great.

Pros

The options of what you can do with this program seem to be almost endless. Every week it seems like we are learning something new and a way to impliment something to improve our processes. It is a great program and a one-stop-shop!

Cons

It can be VERY tricky to learn. I am a "millennial" who has grown up with computers and know my way around most programs pretty easily. However, it did take me a while to get used to the program and to learn exactly what it is capable of. Not every area of the program is user friendly, so it can be frustrating when you are still trying to learn the program.

A robust, reliable, scalable product for managing a law practice of any size

I use the product in a server environment rather than online. I prefer the added up-time and security that an in-house server provides. Tech support has been consistently responsive. I have used the full-bore suite for trust accounting, bookkeeping and billing for more than a year. The back-office functions do take time to understand how to set up operate and require initial assistance from an experienced user. This is where the "hidden" cost is, but once that work was done the benefits outweighed the cost. Among them, each module is synced to each other component. Payments from trust, for example, immediately post to the bank account ledger and billing program.

Pros

Feature-rich, especially Version 19 and the TABS3 billing/trust/accounting suite. Manage clients, contacts, calendars, timekeepers, and the entire back office. The UI (user interface) is now very UF (user friendly). Extremely stable and reliable. Scalable. Very competetive pricing for solo practitioners is available. Reasonable pricing for the capabilities offered.

Cons

The learning curve may be the steepest and costliest of any comparable product. However, there is no way around this to achieve the highest and best use of the product.

Practice Master is good but the partner Tabs3 is not

I've been using PM since 2012 so I am intimately familiar with the application, but it's just not up to date with technology, should be web based, takes too long to get approved with new versions of Office, etc.

Pros

PM on the surface seems like a great product. You can attach documents to each matter, but after a while you run out of space on the server because of all the incoming mail for each client, briefs, motions, letters, cross-motions, interrogatories, all add up. The calendar is good to get an idea of where everyone is, but the old style tickler is not really available like it should be. To remind staff of deadlines, so it's if you happen to see it on the calendar which is just not acceptable. Tabs, the main part of the applications, appears on the surface to be an all encompassing program to fix all your needs and you can get rid of all the extra applications, nope. It is not intuitive, can't manipulate, too hard to train the staff on, work flows are not great either.

Cons

Disappointed Tabs is not all its cracked up to be. Thought I could get rid of our hourly billing system as well as our financial system which is all separated. You can't modify it to work with how your firm works.

Reliable, flexible and feature rich product

We have been using over 6 years. The company has been around a very long time and has a sold, feature rich product that can be tailored to work for most everyone. Lots of modules to support accounting, document management and payables. They have integration with several key players like Worldox. There are many more features than any one firm would use but it is built to be flexible and to accommodate a wide range of practices and use. Biggest con for me is that there is no web or client portal features beyond their Tabs3Connect product.

Pros

Feature rich. Rock solid stability and reliability. Strong technical support with a good network of 3rd party trainers and support.

Cons

I'm not planning on changing anytime soon, but would like to see a couple of key improvements. First, add more modern web and client portal features that newer web based products offer. Second, the license model could improve. This product is licensed by user (like most), but inactive users are included in the license count. In order to remove them from the license pool, you essentially have to combine the data from the old user into another active or inactive user account in order to free up a license for someone else. This likely occurs with some other competitors but in my opinion could be re-developed more thoughtfully.

Makes case files searchable

Our tailor-made PracticeMaster suite makes it easy for everyone at our law firm to organize, search, and share any kind of document that might be associated with a case, from pleadings, discovery, and correspondence to case expenses and document form templates. The need for us to create and maintain our own computer folder hierarchy has been eliminated by this software, which does it automatically. The search function is more streamlined than the Windows or Macintosh search. PracticeMaster has its own messaging service, which allows anyone to attach a notification to a case document. PracticeMaster has been skillfully created with an understanding of the needs and demands of a working law firm.

Pros

PracticeMaster has a wide range of functionality. Creating and sharing documents, sending notifications to coworkers, and tracking billable hours are all possible without any add-ons that muddy the experience.

Cons

Like other highly powerful and versatile software, PracticeMaster has an interface that is initially difficult to understand. A photoediting suite may give you the ability to add ambient blurring and stitch multiple photos together via an algorithm, but if you don't know the interface, you will probably struggle to figure out how to rotate the picture or zoom in. It takes a while to get over these early navigational difficulties.
