I like Moodle, I like the support, I just don't like the fact that my particular site is not aesthetically pleasing and we lack after course interaction, I lack the knowledge and imagination to improve it and I don't know where to find the inspiration.

Pros:

The system is used by many institutions so courses are transferable. It is logical to use,not always easy though. Course creation can be done by most computer literate people and compared to other LMS', they have commented that Moodle is practical, interactive, and easier to use. As an administration it is good to have the service support just an email away.

Cons:

The system is large so all features are not fully used and unless you are dedicated Admin manager of your system, many of the Admin features can be difficult to fully understand. The activities do not present as sexy as they do in other platforms. The Community is hard to search and rarely do I find answers.

Reasons for choosing Open LMS

I had used Open LMS before and new others worked with the same LMS

Vendor Response

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are pleased to hear that you find the platform practical and that our support team has been helpful to your institution. We genuinely appreciate your honest feedback regarding the administrative complexity and the desire for more modern, engaging course designs. Please know that our team is actively working on improving the user experience and aesthetics of the platform to make it more intuitive and inspiring for everyone. Thank you for being part of our community and for helping us grow.

Solid architecture and managed learning, but with severe operational and integration constraints in the long term.

5

My overall experience following an extended customer lifecycle has been a dichotomy between operational excellence and technological restriction. For years, Open LMS functioned as a flawless learning management engine; its open-source-based core, optimized for cloud architecture, eliminates the friction of server administration and delivers uninterrupted availability, fully justifying its deployment in critical institutional environments. Instructional design tools, such as the PLD, are top-tier for facilitating teacher-student interaction. However, a comprehensive long-term evaluation reveals a distinct technical glass ceiling. As institutional requirements evolve toward advanced data science, the integration of external artificial intelligence models, or the imperative for absolute technological sovereignty over database architectures, the 'sandbox' nature of Open LMS becomes a severe operational bottleneck. The bureaucratic friction required to enable specific extensions and the incremental cost model ultimately lead to technological stagnation. It remains an exceptional product for organizations that prioritize total infrastructure delegation, but it is highly restrictive for institutions demanding architectural flexibility, deep process auditing, and contractual independence over their proprietary information ecosystems.

Functionality

Pros:

Personalized Learning Designer (PLD): The capability to automate workflows via conditional rules is solid. However, it presents operational difficulties during course content restoration processes; when restoring a course into a new target environment, the new course frequently struggles to maintain the optimal functionality and execution of these inherited rules.

Cons:

1\. Closed Architecture and Integration Friction: Being a highly managed and closed environment, there is a severe backend lockout. There is an inability to perform advanced SQL queries, and when utilizing the ad-hoc reporting module, query execution is sluggish and prone to crashing. Furthermore, delayed-execution reports take an excessive amount of time to generate. Additionally, obtaining robust reporting capabilities requires licensing third-party products at exorbitant costs, often rivaling the core Open LMS licensing fees themselves, rather than providing a native advanced reporting system commensurate with its high pricing tier. 2. Rigidity in Plugin Deployment: The process of incorporating plugins is highly cost-inefficient, as clients are forced to pay for the adaptation of any plugin not already included in their proprietary matrix to ensure compatibility with Open LMS. This directly conflicts with the open-source philosophy of Moodle, which boasts over 2,000 free plugins. It is structurally paradoxical to incur development costs to deploy a plugin that is natively free in standard Moodle environments. 3. Asymmetrical Active User Cost Structure: The pricing model based on active users is disproportionately expensive, as clients inevitably pay for the retention of historical data used strictly for reporting purposes. It is fundamentally illogical to incur the same licensing fee for an alumnus whose data has been dormant for a decade as for a highly active, concurrent user interacting with the platform daily.

Reasons for switching to Open LMS

I switched from OpenLMS to Moodle, and in this way I returned to Moodle.

Vendor Response

Thank you for providing such a comprehensive and technical evaluation of your experience with Open LMS. We sincerely appreciate your recognition of our operational stability and the effectiveness of tools like the Personalized Learning Designer (PLD). We also take your concerns regarding backend accessibility, reporting limitations, and the flexibility of our plugin ecosystem very seriously. Your insights into the challenges of scaling toward advanced data science and AI integration are incredibly valuable. Please be assured that our team is continuously working on improving the user experience and evolving our architecture to better meet the sophisticated needs of growing institutions. Thank you for your long-term partnership and for helping us identify these critical areas for growth.

A powerful, highly customizable LMS with outstanding support

5

My experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Open LMS provides a stable, scalable environment that easily handles our large user base and complex organizational needs. It is a fantastic platform backed by a great team.

Functionality

Pros:

As an administrator, the best thing about Open LMS is its limitless flexibility. Because it is built on Moodle, we are never boxed into a rigid system. If we need a specific feature, there is almost always a plugin, LTI integration, or configuration available to make it happen. The Personalized Learning Designer (PLD) has been a game-changer for us, allowing us to automate administrative tasks, send targeted alerts, and create custom learning paths without needing a developer. Furthermore, the peace of mind that comes with their managed hosting is incredible. We get the deep customizability of an open-source platform, but with the reliability, security, and top-tier customer support of a premium SaaS product. Their support team is responsive, knowledgeable, and truly acts as a partner in our success.

Cons:

Because the platform is so feature-rich and powerful, there is a bit of a learning curve when you first take over the backend administration. Setting up granular role permissions and advanced reports requires some initial time investment to get right. However, this is a minor trade-off for having such a highly customizable system, and the Open LMS support documentation and help desk are always there to guide you through any complex setups.

Vendor Response

We are delighted to hear that Open LMS has offered the architectural freedom you need to build your learning ecosystem. It is particularly great to know that the Personalized Learning Designer has successfully streamlined your workflows through automation, as we aim to pair the flexibility of open-source tools with the security of a managed hosting service. We acknowledge that the platform's depth can lead to an initial learning curve. To help simplify that journey, we encourage you to explore the Open LMS Academy. It is a great resource designed to help administrators master those granular settings and advanced features more quickly. Thank you for being a valued part of our community and for your dedication to enhancing the learning experience!

Pros:

Number 1 would definitely be the customer support. I can call on our account manager at any time and she will assist or refer me to the right person. For our requirements, OpenLMS provides value for money, ease of use and excellent course management. We are specifically using tenancies, which has significantly improved our overall training packages.

Cons:

The 2 things I like the least about OpenLMS was the initial training and Tier 1 support. The initial welcome training should have been more focussed on what we wanted to do and not basic LMS information. I would have to say that I have had a few interactions with the Tier 1 support team that either took very long or they weren't able to assist.

Vendor Response

Thank you for sharing your experience with Open LMS! We are so glad to hear that our tenancy features and account management are providing great value to your team and partners. We also sincerely appreciate your constructive feedback regarding our initial training and Tier 1 support. We are constantly working to refine our onboarding and response processes, and your insights help us focus on the areas that matter most to our users. My overall experience with Open LMS has been positive. It provides a reliable and user-friendly environment for both teaching and learning, allowing faculty, students, and administrators to efficiently navigate and manage their tasks. While there are areas that could be further streamlined, particularly in advanced configurations, the system remains stable and well-supported. Pros:

The OpenLMS team is supportive and helpful when you need them. The platform works well, but it has many settings, so at times you need to contact support and ask for help. They are always helpful. Moodle can do better in the design part to match other LMS's, but with each update, there are some improvements. It is a cheaper platform, and instructors can do all the tasks they need to teach courses. It is good that it's an open-source LMS, so many users can contribute to making Moodle better. OpenLMS carefully adds those features to our Moodle.

Cons:

The amount of time it takes to fix some bugs. Depending on the importance, it can take a couple of updates for a bug to get fixed.
