Schedlyzer user for over 4 years

Optisol´s solution has been of great benefit for our organization and for our customers! We have managed to place control over a very large and complicated manufacturing process. The process of introduction to the operation of Schedulyzer was significantly less painful than expected. We got higher confidence in the completeition times of our projects, specially larger ones. We typically operate with around 100 orders active in the system at the same time, each having a large amount of activities. Now we are in the process of bringing the rest of our operations to the system sure of bringing the benefits Optisol advertise.

PROS

The ability to make sense of large number of activities, with different priorities and different constraints.

CONS

That it does not run a live simulation of what should be going on. It basically gives a static forecast every time. Reporting is not that great looking either.

Optimizing Job-Shop Production

Our company is in the custom floor finishing business which means we purchase milled wood and finish it (color and texture) as a unique custom order. We were initially concerned the Schedlyzer would not apply to us since we were not actually manufacturing or fabricating a product but were performing a service. We quickly learned the tool was adaptable to our environment and we were able to start scheduling our jobs fairly quickly after getting the software. PROS: 1. By creating and using templates, we could enter new jobs very quickly 2. The ability to set job priority helped us assure the most important jobs were completed first 3. The Gantt chart view enabled our production staff and sales force to have the ability to view where projects were on a daily basis CONS: 1. The print capacity is not there only for graphs. All schedule output in numerical form can be printed and saved without any problem. 2. We were initially unable to group multiple jobs with a single customer. We later discovered if customer name is entered as "Part Number", then you can filter all projects belonging to a customer on Gantt chart. OVERALL IMPRESSION: We are very pleased with the ease of use, simplicity, and versatility of the tool. We also had outstanding customer support and any and every time we had a problem, we were able to get a quick response and quick resolution. We believe this tool was very much worth the purchase and the effort.

Vendor Response

I agree with John Saladino's comment on limited print option. Our software does not print graphs on paper although the entire numerical schedule output can be saved in various formats and printed on paper. To compensate this drawback, we offer a site license of an optional module called "Schedule Viewer" which is the same as the actual scheduling software except that it does not allow users to change input data or reschedule. All features related to schedule output are the same in both tools. John's main benefit with the software comes from the capability to handle multi-resource requirements of various production operations and schedule multi-skilled workers optimally. Schedlyzer Lite, a lighter version of our software used by John is very powerful for both the features and also for scheduling production over multiple shifts. It should be very difficult for anyone to find in the market a scheduling tool as powerful and economical as Schedlyzer Lite for custom production.

Schedulyzer Lite in a small shop with highly varied tasks and worker skills

It has helped us take a very busy schedule with several workers of varying skills and jobs with numerous different steps, and manage it to help ensure we prioritize jobs correctly, and understand our capacity.

PROS

We are a small custom furniture and upholstery company. Our business and team began growing quickly a couple of years ago when we began manufacturing marine cushions; as such excel and a calendar were not cutting it anymore to manage our schedule. We needed something to help us manage and schedule the steps that had to occur to ensure jobs were completed on time. Schedulyzer Lite has met our needs at a manageable start-up cost for a company of our size. - I like that I am able to enter jobs with multiple tasks that are completed by different workers and at various points. This software is able to sequence the steps appropriately while working to meet the overall due date. - It’s easy to print off the schedule details with just a couple of clicks. - Customer service is excellent; requests for assistance are responded to almost always the same day, often in the same hour. - Technicians will walk you step by step through the launch and assist with any challenges you encounter for quite a while after your launch - The software is straightforward to use and I love that it saves job templates so I can easily enter similar jobs in the future.

CONS

Optisol rep I worked with was sometimes hard to understand due to a thick accent; however he was always very patient to repeat/rephrase when needed. - I wish I could print off/export the gantt chart view of the schedule.

Schedlyzer Lite does a great job for the price.

PROS

We are a small company that makes custom industrial ovens. We do engineering design, fabrication, welding, painting, assembly, electrical wiring and testing for all ovens. We were having a difficult time estimating our ship dates and understanding capacity constraints. However, we did not want to spend a lot of money on scheduling software that might be too cumbersome for us to understand and maintain. Schedlyzer Lite has met our needs for a great price. It is not fancy, but it does the job and is easy to maintain and understand. It is easy to set-up so the 60 day trial period was plenty of time for me to make my buy decision. Customer support is excellent. I get my questions answered on the spot or within few hours Price is very affordable for the functionality you get Ability to create routing templates makes entering new jobs easy

CONS

It is sometimes difficult for me to understand one of the rep due to his accent. However, he is more than willing to explain things again. It would be nice to see a list of jobs ready for a resource, but which are waiting because another job is occupying that resource.

Vendor Response

Thanks to our customer Mr. Rob Hughes for a valuable suggestion for further enhancement of Schedlyzer Lite functionality.

Schedlyzer helped us get a grip on our capasity

WE researched many scheduling software packages and discovered that many of them were just glorified calendars that were not based on any real data. Schedlyzer was the best capacity planning software that we could find. It has helped us see true asset utilization, bottlenecks, and be able to see how break in work effects the overall schedule. Not only is the software great i have had a great experience with Prasad. When i had questions he was more than responsive.

PROS

ease of customization

CONS

there is a language barrier between Prasad and his customers that can make communication difficult.

Vendor Response

I agree with Zach regarding communication. Some people find it somewhat difficult to follow my heavy accent in English. But, Zach implicitly provided a good example that the merit of Schedlyzer can outweigh this drawback. We are glad that the merit of Schedlyzer keeps us in competition in spite of the drawback. After the free trial period, users buy Schedlyzer and contact us very infrequently for any help because they do not need the help anymore. Prasad Velaga, PhD

Very Happy with this product!

Most other software's I have tried doesn't have nearly as much functionality as this one does. Which is essential to have for a vast and diverse job shop. Also whenever I needed assistance with it the service and support is immediate and has always been sufficient to solve any issues.

PROS

It is extremely customizable to your current work mix or processes. Can be used for day to day scheduling, and forecasting.

CONS

It is clunky at times. the user interface isn't as the best.

Great Piece of Software to Bring Order and Efficiency to Scheduling and Production

Getting setup with this software was a somewhat complex but the customer support provided in setting it up made it a breeze. I was allowed to extend my demo period in order to prove that the software was the right choice for our company. Any questions that I had were thoroughly answered in order to provide me with a better understanding of the product. Excellent experience overall!

PROS

The flexibility of this program is fantastic once you get used to all of the different modules. It can provide many benefits for any low volume/high variety manufacturing process. It is very versatile.

CONS

The program is a little cumbersome to use but once you get used to it, scheduling is a breeze. The benefits highly outweigh the cons. I would like to be able to customize reports in the future. For example, add job quantity to the project summary sheet....stuff like that.

Vendor Response

We accept the opinion of Mr. Dan Coleman about user friendliness of our software. Being highly versatile for a wide spectrum of job shops, our software is not very user friendly during the first few days of trial runs. Later, it will be quite easy to run the software. For this reason, we strongly urge new users to take our full, unconditional help over web, email and phone in the initial phase of free evaluation.

Schedulyzer is a complete solution to our scheduling challenges

We are a 42 year old "job shop" in the graphic arts industry. We have over 50 pieces of equipment and run 3 shifts with variable staffing and skill levels on each shift. For many years we used scheduling boards and tried several attempts at using Excel for scheduling. Our production scheduler spent 8 to 10 hours / day producing a daily schedule. We had very little information to see bottlenecks, utilization, etc. I started looking at scheduling systems about 4 years ago. Everything I looked at would have accomplished our needs, but was very expensive. Finally I found Schedlyzer by Optisol. I was able to setup a trial for several months. It ended up being a very good fit for our business. Today we are able to produce our entire schedule in less than 2 hours / day. It would take far less than 2 hours, but we end up cleaning up a lot of our own data. We have an excellent view of our shop (equipment, labor, etc.). We can anticipate bottlenecks and react much quicker than in the past. We are able to better control overtime. I would highly recommend trying out Schedlyzer. Scheduling is a complex topic. If you do check out Schedlyzer, make a commitment to learn about it and understand it. It tooks me several weeks to fully understand the potential. I'm glad I gave it a chance. Pros: Very fast Gives you a great view of equipment and labor utilization Easy to use Good view of early / late delivery Price Cons: Has a bit of a "dated" feel.

This software has helped us been able to forecast more accurately our custom-built projects

I was able to develop forecasting schedules based on true hourly capacity.

PROS

The software is very flexible and has multiple scheduling options, allowing for optimization of different variables. Also, because its based on Access databases, the outputs are easy to integrate into other reporting and visualization applications.

CONS

Some of the architecture and terminology are not very intuitive, and sometimes even counter-intuitive.

Schedlyzer in a High Mix Low Volume Job Shop

My company was looking for a scheduling tool to use in our high mix low volume shop. Schedlyzer fit the bill and has been working well for our needs. The customer support has been very good. The program is definitely function over form. A 60 day free trial is offered which was very helpful. Once it is set up properly and you understand how to navigate the program it is an effective tool for scheduling. Getting to that point will take some time. Pros: Fast and easy to iterate the schedule "What if" function works well Customer support is excellent Free trial Affordable Cons: Set up is a long and arduous process The aesthetic is dated but functional

Vendor Response

I agree with Nicholas Ungar's comment on the setup process. If there are numerous work centers, two or more shifts, multi-functional machines, workers with different skill sets, etc, then Schedlyzer implementation involves relatively more time and effort and requires patience from people involved. Moreover, integration of Schedlyzer with company's ERP system also involves considerable work. This implementation is successful mainly due to the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of Nicholas Ungar in the project. Optisol provided guidance in the implementation.

Schedlyzer is Excellent tool for Production planning & control

Schedlyzer is Excellent tool for Production planning & control Schedlyzer helps to allocate resources as needed, accounting for factors such as delivery dates, production rates and manpower needs and is also an excellent communication tool between the manufacturing floor and the production planning department. Pros: Accurate and timely planning for rush jobs Optimized use of available resources Affordable price User friendly, Easily modify & Very fast Excellent customer support Cons: Unable to give graphical representation of total work load in shop & bottleneck of work center Overall Impression This software has many useful features designed to reduce manufacturing delays and backlogs. We strongly recommended it to maximized plant floor throughput.

Vendor Response

As Sadik pointed out, Schedlyzer does not graphically show the scheduled cumulative workloads of any work center (or a bottleneck resource) over time intervals like a week or month although it shows the schedule of a work center or a resource for any selected time interval in tabular or graphical form. For a better perception of the schedule, Sadik is also looking for summarization of scheduled workloads over time intervals for work centers and bottleneck resources. I agree with his requirement.

Simple yet powerful and effective

I stepped into a business that was scheduling on a wall with post it notes. Long processes that took days-weeks with multiple pieces of equipment to schedule. With less than 2 hrs demo and support I was able to load all our info and get an optimized schedule. Trial period was nice to get a feel for the system and its capabilities. There aren't a lot of bells and whistles, but has lots of options once you learn the system. Super quick to rerun the schedule with different due dates, priorities, orders, etc.

PROS

Software was easy learn, easy to update, and provided the most optimized schedule of all tools demoed.

CONS

Would have liked to lock some orders to specific dates, like when locking in a schedule for 2 weeks, then optimizing past that. I found ways around it but would have liked an easier way.

Automated Schedule

We are a small machine shop and this tool fits us. But I can see this tool working in very large shops as well. I looked at several other more expensive packages and they did not have the power and flexibility of Schedlyzer.

PROS

A powerful schedule tool. We are a small manufacturing company that make aircraft hardware with many processes, both in and out of our shop. This tool lets us forecast potential bottlenecks and work around them BEFORE they affect our deliveries. We can see ahead of time where machines will be lacking work and schedule them to fit our needs. Every machine, outside processor, and employee can have their own alloted time to work into the overall picture.

CONS

I need to manually compact the Access database weekly. I wish the table column widths could be saved. I would like operations to have the option of overall prioritizing.

- I truly recommend this product to any job shop/project management team who needs to analyze constraints based on due dates of orders to customers. It is very simple to use and it is very powerful to analyze what if scenarios by changing number of workers/machines, schedules, priorities.

PROS

- Great Customer Service - Full Gantt Chart View with ability to dig into each project or job to see specific steps - Resource Utlilization Charts for Constraint Analysis - Analysis of adding extra workers/machines and how it will impact the delivery dates - Calendars to change the amount of hours workers are in the shop. - Analysis of adding overtime and impact on delivery dates

CONS

- We have not come across any cons. The great customer service behind the product facilitates its implementation.

Schedlyzer is a Very Effective Scheduling Tool

We have been using Schedlyzer as our primary advanced planning & scheduling tool for over a year now. Having had no system in place prior, and as with any other AP/S, there was a learning curve in using the tool, but once I became proficient with it, we began to experience great results in terms of efficiency - and the standard tools and summaries that are included have helped very much in planning. In particular, I have found the summary forecast to be highly accurate. Customer service is first-rate. Even after using Schedlyzer for over a year, any challenge, requested modification, or questions I may have are answered very promptly - normally within minutes of my first communication, and technical issues or requested modifications are resolved within one or two business days. I have been extremely satisfied with customer support.

Schedlyzer

I would highly recommend this software to anyone wanting a finite scheduler to handle dissimilar routings with cross trained employees working different shifts.

PROS

It produces accurate schedules very fast. It lets me see conflicts and bottlenecks much earlier in the process. We were easily able to link the software to the shop floor, through a .net program we created, so employees can update time remaining on the current job. Job entry is fast and easy after your templates are set-up. It handles multiple shifts and vacations well. Reasonable cost.

CONS

Should include a way for shop floor to update time remaining. My learning curve was 2 months but I had no background in scheduling. Mouse scroll button doesn't work on most screens.

Excellent choice for us--we just wanted a pure algorithm to determine sequencing in the shop. It does that very well.

PROS

Extremely good core algoithm. It produces the optimum result for a given input and it is fast, always less than 1/2 a second. Great Gantt chart dispay. It is easy to update. New jobs can be "tested" on the schedule and easily removed, modified, etc.

CONS

Could not list my jobs in the order I wanted t see them. Has that old DOS feel, not the smooth presentation of more popular programs. Report output was not satisfactory so some reports are not used. Some limitation in "what if" analysis of different scenarios--can be confusing.

Great Tool

Schedulyzer is a great scheduling tool. Our scheduling model was somewhat complex, so implementation took some time, but the tool allows us to do almost everything we needed. Not only has it made our shop floor more organized by helping us reduce WIP, but it also has allowed us to make better decisions as orders come in. The definitely takes some learning to be able to use it to its full potential. Its not tool where you can't "make" the schedule, you can only input the information(resources available, time to process, mfg release date). This is where understanding the scheduling process comes into play. I think its a great tool, but expect some time investment in making it work for you.
