No incentive was offered I signed up for Semrush's free trial to evaluate whether the platform would be suitable for my business. After testing the service, I determined that it was not the right fit for our requirements and budget. The trial automatically converted into a paid subscription, resulting in a USD 199 charge. Within approximately 30 minutes of the payment being processed, I contacted support, requested a refund, and immediately canceled the subscription. The account was not used for any meaningful activity after the charge other than logging in to cancel the subscription and submit the refund request. Despite explaining the situation, including the fact that we are a small business and that the service would not be used, Semrush refused to provide a refund. I submitted multiple requests, including a goodwill appeal, and the matter was escalated internally. After review, Semrush confirmed that they would not refund the payment and would not reopen the case. My disappointment is not that a refund policy exists. It is that there appears to be no flexibility whatsoever, even when a customer requests a refund almost immediately after being charged, cancels the service right away, and receives no meaningful benefit from the paid subscription. Potential customers should be extremely careful when signing up for a trial. Set multiple reminders and cancel well before the trial expires if you are unsure. Based on my experience, immediate cancellation and an immediate refund request were not sufficient for Semrush to make an exception. I was charged for an expensive AdClarity add-on that I did not clearly intend to subscribe to, and the charges continued until I noticed them. When I contacted support, my refund request was denied. I also found it very frustrating that I could not simply remove my payment card directly, and that removing the add-on required contacting support by email and waiting up to two weeks. Then it can expand out from there. There are a ton of things to do in the platform, but I feel it's so much built it can be difficult to navigate. You have to have a "degree in semrush" in order to actually fully utilize it. This is problematic when there are other tools like the ones by [sensitive content hidden] which are simpler. I feel there really needs to be a beginner UI and the various UI elements should be unlockable or in some way there should be a beginner version. #### Cons There's quite a few things. Their SEO optimization for articles is okay, but I find just prompting a free GPT instance to be about the same. Using paid GPT is considerably better. The article builder has an image suggestion tool that's absolutely bogus. It's generative AI image prompting bordering on 2019 quality and looks like it hasn't been iterated on since launch. Just unusable and even when you can create a halfway decent image it still looks like AI gen slop. Their cancelation policy is incredibly out-dated and violates FTC guidelines on a one-click cancellation. I've spoken to support about this and I get back a robotic response of "That's just what our policy is." They don't seem to get it's factually against the law. Here's the entire process: 1. You can't just go to your subscription and click cancel 2. You have submit a chat request 3. The chat then takes you to a form you have to fill out with your reason for canceling and VERIFY you want to cancel. 4. Then you are sent an eMail CONFIRMING your cancelation that you need to click on. 5. Further still I was told despite going through all these steps, "You didn't give clear intent of your desire to cancel." so I was billed for another month. I tried to clarify for the 4th time that it's not supposed to be this way and is in fact an FTC violation. No acknowledgement of that.
