MediTouch EHR Software

NextGen Healthcare offers MediTouch EHR and MediTouch PM, a suite of electronic health records and practice management tools that were designed to be web-based and offer a touchscreen user interface.

The EHR offers charting, problem lists, medication management, electronic prescribing, allergy checks, order management, lab tests and document management, among other capabilities. The system can be configured to meet a provider’s charting preferences; custom forms can be implemented to work with MediTouch’s touchscreen technology.

The EHR can be deployed standalone or in conjunction with NextGen Healthcare’s practice management system, which automatically checks patients’ insurance eligibility 72 hours before appointments, and will store payer contracts within the system so that billers can verify terms and requirements. An online ERA service allows users to automatically post and download EOBs.

Because the system is web-based and hosted by NextGen Healthcare, customers do not need to install or maintain any software on-premise. The system can be accessed through a web browser, and is designed to work natively on iPads and iPad Minis.

MediTouch is priced on a pay-per-provider, monthly subscription. The subscription fees include domestic customer support and training services.

MediTouch, what a difference

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Customer Support

Value for Money

Pros

Easy. Started using the program before training began. It is very easy to use. Finer points are not always obvious so train is helpful, but instead of spending your and staff time on learning the easy parts, you can spend your time learning the finer points and how to adapt the EHR to your work patterns and needs.

Cons

No written documentation, but that is easily overcome by accessing the user suggestions cited and online documentation. Anything you need a hard copy on can be printed from the site.

Cons

Everything. Sales people are rude. I thought sales are supposed to be polite?? Heaven forbid you ever have a problem. You will NOT reach a solution easily. Likely, you will spend 20-30 hours on the phone, just being shuffled back and forth. When you are finally given help, it doesn't make sense. If you explain how it doesn't make sense and you are reaching X error - there is no response. So, you start again!!

Pros

Utilizing the Reports available has proven to be beneficial financially and in reference to organizational time management.

Cons

Tech support wait time varies 20 - 65 minutes; phone call return option has been unsuccessful; system down for maintenance frequently. In Scheduling you can view only ONE month at a time, there is no roll-over to partial following month.

I feel that as time goes on I am really happy with my investment in the software to try and help keep me more organized

Pros

Cost! This was the most cost effective EHR, Practice Management, and Billing software I could find for my small practice. Love that this company already had their own clearing house so things are smoother without another entity involved. The support staff usually solves my issues when I call for help within minutes. The support staff is always very professional and I do not feel like a dummy asking simple or more complex questions

Cons

There are so many useful aspects of the software that I haven't used them all yet. It took me some time to streamline how I write notes because of how I work. Once I learned to use dictation from my computer in the text boxes I was good to go for how I work.

I really think that HealthFusion must have paid the AOA a huge sum of money for it's endorsement. This software was NOT ready for prime time when the AOA eagerly endorsed them a few years ago. Their support takes forever to address a work ticket. We have asked for some simple changes and updates and 2-3 years later, they have still not been addressed. The Verizon secure ID app for electronic prescribing of controlled substances is ridiculous. After 3 years of using this program, we are too heavily invested to easily switch......but I think it is time to bite the bullet and do it.

Pros

When it works, it is fairly fast. Support has improved somewhat since Nexgen took over. That's about it.

Cons

Too much down time / slow downs. It improved a bit several months ago, but has been giving us problems again lately.....not as bad as it was 6-8 months ago, but still too many bad days. No ability to access records locally if their server is down.....not even for read-only. The company has been unable to support, or have refused to support the ability to have redundant read-only data at the client's site. So when their service is down, your practice is dead in the water.
No ability to view schedules or charts......nothing. Totally unacceptable.
Tracking the patient's prescription history is needlessly complicated, as is the Problem List. The company could not have possibly consulted actual working physicians when they wrote this program.

Their electronic prescribing of controlled substances and the Verizon UIS secure ID app is slow and clunky. Even worse, Verizon has locked me out on at least 3 occasions and I have been unable to e-prescribe. And NO, it is NOT user error. The verification process to get re-credentialed is redundant and confusing. Furthermore, there is no way to directly deal with Verizon to solve the issue.....the on-screen message says "Do not contact Verizon directly.....contact your EHR company". But when I do that, it takes DAYS to get a response.

Colleagues, keep looking; I did many hours of research on my final 3 choices, with at least 4 different presentations on MediTouch to myself, my office manager, head nurse and two other providers. Just can't foresee all the glitches, roadblocks, and problems until you buy it and are using it...kind of like the ACA, right Ms. Pelosi? "Let's pass (buy) this bill so we can see what's in it,"

Pros

Easy to modify "template" or document on the fly. Scheduling portion is good. Financial reports are good.

Cons

Average customer support, at best. You get passed from person to person, promised call-backs are usually days later than promised, sometimes do not occur at all.. Conversion not as promised. Medications documentation is confusing, redundant, very inefficient. Does NOT autopopulate labs results for tracking over time (cannot look at flowsheets unless you individually enter each result into the flowsheet, which is ridiculously inefficient), yet we were shown examples of lab flowsheets. Lots of problems with their electronic claims submissions. If I could get out of my contract (after 1 year of use now), without paying for the full 3 years I signed up for, I would do it immediately!

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Training on the product should be done is different steps. The initial one to get a practice going. Then another one like 3 months later. Because once you start getting a hang of the system that is when you have questions, because at that time you know what to ask but the training is done so you have to go on internal hold for tech support (I have been on hold for an hour) or go to on line support which is just a bad because they never know exactly what your talking about. Just a bad set up.

Pros

I'm not a big fan of the product. I think there is something more geared for our business. We were told it was but once we got working in it, we learned it wasn't

Cons

The practice management side doesn't talk with the EHR side and if you have to note something, you have to do it in both sides. The Fax is so slow and it fails all the time. Hold time for tech support is horrible. I could go on .

Ease-of-use

Some features are fine, but some like e-prescribe are bad enough that we are actively looking for a new EMR and don't expect to stay with Meditouch much longer.

Pros

Versatile and customizable; reports can be very comprehensive and useful and can be run on many different subjects.

Cons

Difficult to navigate and not at all intuitive -- it takes a lot of clicks in random places to accomplish most tasks. The worst is the e-prescribe feature, which is unreliable and is often pending for 20 minutes and then will randomly fail for no reason, leading to a lot of calls from unhappy patients waiting at the pharmacy. Meditouch support is remarkably unhelpful with this and support in general has become much worse ever since Healthfusion was taken over by NextGen.

Not a very good system, mediocre customer service.

Pros

Doctor is happy with the electronic health records but the administrative side is the worst I have ever used.

Cons

Very inflexible on the financial side. when a mistake is made, sometimes, there are many steps to correct the mistakes. For example, refunding a credit card payment, if a mistake is made is impossible. Applying payments is also very cumbersome. The worse thing is a receipt with all the charges can not be printed for a patient until the claim has been submitted to the ins and the patient's payment is applied.

Billing platform is so-so. Price is in the midrange but given the poor quality of the EHR product and customer service, it is considered over-priced.

Cons

I have used many EHR in the past (EPIC, CERNER, nextgen, eclinical, free open source EHR) and this is the absolute worst EHR. It was originally made for billing and it's EHR side is clunky, glitchy and inefficient. In order to review notes, labs, images, path report, you have to go in and out of the chart constantly. Many clicks. Also they do not deliver on their promises, and their sales team/contact person would not get back to you, once they have sold the product. Will soon switch EHR.

Wow. Where to start! You can't add addendums. You can't preview incoming faxes so you have to open the entire fax and then enlarge it just to read it. You can't fax out XPS documents. If you e-rx a med a few days early, you can't change the date on the rx. You can't free text the e-rx's so if you have any tapered directions you have to call the men in. If you are not in the note when you e-rx a med, you can't add it later to the Plan. The templates are very frustrating to use when you have to change the verbiage because the system will frequently delete the entire verbiage if you click the wrong button. The billing system is a nightmare. Not intuitive at all. Very complicated. It is also very difficult to move around in the EMR because again, if you click the wrong button, you are suddenly out of the pt's medical chart and into the pt's financial chart and then you have to click 3 times and search again for the pt's chart just to get back to the pt's chart. And if you had several other pt's charts open when you made that mistake, they all get closed as well. SO, IT IS A TERRIBLE EMR. The worst I've ever used by far. I have trained for 40 hours on this thing and it's still difficult and slow moving around in it and I'm working on a PhD! The worst part is that they are holding me to a year long contract that says I will pay them even if I stop using it. That should have been my first clue to RUN AWAY!!! And that it took them 6 months to get my fax, lab, and insurances loaded!!!

Thank for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear that the Data Migration timeline did not meet your expectations. Our team worked diligently on the project to meet your timeframe, however, due to the quality of data received, large number of people involved in the project, missing information, and speed at which files were produced from your prior vendor, this proved to be challenging.

It appears that your practice was active in training for 4 months. Our typical Implementation lasts 6-8 weeks with 2 live sessions each week, in addition to our online resources. I have contacted you via email to discuss training and arrange additional sessions to ensure you are comfortable with all aspects of the system. I look forward to speaking with you.

Health Fusion has been such a major help in terms of so many tasks and responsibilities. From statements, to medical records, to money posting the system is set up in a way that makes a lot of sense.

Pros

The customer service is phenomenal. Whenever I get lost or bogged down I can pick up the phone and ask anyone in customer service for help and they not only tell me how to fix my issue, but also stay on the phone and walk me through step by step if I need it.

This program is easy to use, customizable, and the Engineers update it frequently. If there is a question about anything in the program, Customer Support is easy to contact and almost always find the solution rapidly.

Pros

Very easy to use once the setup is done. Setup is customizable to your field which will take some time and effort, but the program can be used almost immediately.

Cons

Since it is Touchscreen based, sometimes the buttons seem too small

Advice to Others

If you want to try it out, try to find someone in your field to demonstrate how they use it.

Overall the system is wonderful but there are some small things that make it difficult. For example our practice uses a workaround to get a list of open encounters.

Pros

It's easy to use and has little downtime. It also seems to be a very secure and HIPAA compliant system.

Cons

There are some reporting features that don't exist and others that lack some of the functionality we would like.

I have been working with Medi touch for more than 2 years, it is the easiest software i have ever used! I really recommend it. Easy to navigate around.

Pros

What I like the most is that i can easily upload documents into the proper charts, very easy and simple to input information.

Cons

There's really nothing that i do not like about the software. It is the easiest i have ever worked with.

Advice to Others

This software is a must! Very easy and simple to use, I can assure you your employer and employees will have no problems what so ever!!

I have enjoyed using MediTouch EHR. It is very customizable and I am still finding ways to customize for my office and be more efficient. I enjoy it being web-based so I do not have to remote in anywhere and I have enjoyed adding the Siri dictation to some notes. The e-prescribing of controlled substances is awesome and many of my colleagues don't believe it exists because the either do not have an EHR or their EHR does not support it. Transitioning to ICD-10 was very smooth and I appreciate their customer service.

Pros

Customizable
Optimized for iPad
Web-Based
Offers Practice Management

Cons

I don't want some default settings (like pre-printing my DEA number on all prescriptions). I would rather hand write it. Not as big of a deal now that I e-prescribe.

This was our office's forst EMR and we were quite pleased. The built in care plans were amazing, as were the pediatric templates. Looking up prior info was quite easy.

Pros

Access anywhere, price, comprehensive

Cons

Would like to be able to navigate btwn EHR and practice management side more easily, a little slower with the iPad.
