TheraNest is an HIPAA compliant web-based mental health solution used by solo practitioners, large mental health practices, and nonprofit organizations. The solution is suited for therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers.

TheraNest offers electronic medical records (EMR) software with a mobile app for Android and iOS. The solution also includes a client portal, patient scheduling, DSM/ICD codes, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge notes. Users can review and cosign notes and build custom forms.

TheraNest’s billing features include insurance claims, credit card services, and batch invoices. Users can generate reports, including payroll, staff billing, and invoice reports. Unlimited document storage and unlimited support are included.

TheraNest’s client portal - TheraBook, allows clients to schedule appointments, complete demographic information, enter insurance information and submit intake forms from within their own secure accounts. Everything entered in the client portal will sync to clients’ accounts in TheraNest. The system also includes voice, text and email reminders for patients.

    The customer service is superb and they are always improving their software. They really take your feedback into consideration.

    Pros

    The whole team is friendly, responsive, and easy to get in touch with. They offer email, IM, or you can call them directly. Sometimes billing issues are hard to explain in an email, so I love that we can problem solve together over the phone. I also love their claims help. The software is intuitive/easy to use. Wiley integration is great for notes for those who want it and I love that you can pick and choose which staff want to use it and those who do not, so that you are not paying for staff who do not want this function.

    Cons

    Improvements still needed on billing under clinical supervisor. Better ways to do payroll for hourly employee's vs percentage basis. Have fully paid invoices sinc with submitted claims area. Have a way to put in credit card for insurance payments.

    I really like it and I wish that they will implement the suggestions the counselors has been sending to them, which so far they have been integrating slwowly.

    Pros

    It is cheaper compared to other EHR companies. Has integration of video and encrypted message and it is easir to the client to navigate.

    Cons

    I cannot choose which forms I will send to my clients during intake or even assessment.

    It's been positive and has streamlined our charting.

    It's easy to get used to. Very helpful in our office of multiple providers. Saves time (compared to our old paper chart.)

    We are still working on a way for clients to sign documents. For now, we are still scanning in hard copies.

    Super easy to keep ledgers, schedules and all the basic needs of owning/ operating a small mental health practice. Really cool little tricks and extras that I never knew I needed when I started looking into EHRs.

    Pros

    Great, intuitive interface and visually appealing. It really seems like Theranest gets a kick out of making a better and better product for its users.

    Cons

    There are some reports that I wish could be run that are not available.

    This program works well for scheduling and taking payments from clients. We haven't used many features offered because they are not needed for us, but these options leave room for growth. It's a great program

    Pros

    Cost was reasonable, especially for a non-profit counseling service. Ease of use for administrative personnel and counselors alike. They are continuing to grow and add new features, such as telehealth.

    Cons

    I would like some additional features, such as a check out feature that comes with an app for clients. We don't have a secretary, so counselors need to take payments. We'd prefer to get away from this. Hopefully they will work on this soon

    I have less paperwork to store in my home office. Having the option to purchase the Wiley series for treatment planning and progress notes make the day to day paperwork less daunting and faster to complete.

    Pros

    The software is very easy to set up and navigate.

    There are a few functionality features that would be beneficial to have but they're not available as of yet.

    Customer support is very good, which is a lifesaver -- you'll need it!!

    Pros

    The more I use this system the less I like it. I chose it over other systems because I liked the interface, and I still like that. Unfortunately key functions are so bad I am considering switching (after putting in 30+ hours learning and setting up this system).

    Cons

    1) The billing system is so much more difficult than it should be to use on the therapist's end. I thought it would save me time from my former archaic practice of keeping track manually, but there are so many dumb elements (for example, the fact that it's necessary to write off the difference between your standard rate and the insurance reimbursement rate manually for every single invoice), that I'm not sure it saves time at all.
    2) It's not easy for my clients either. There's an online scheduling system. I have two offices in different locations. When clients schedule online the system allows them to choose a location, which makes them think they will only see available appointments at that location. Not true! After a client showing up at the wrong location I realized I had to check in myself with all online appointments to make sure they know where to go.
    3) The online system for payments is hard for clients to use. The statements are ridiculously difficult to read. When I generate a statement it is emailed to clients (not HIPAA compliant), rather than sending them to a secure link to read the statement. I know other therapy systems do this in a HIPAA compliant way, but not Theranest.
    4) Many more complaints but I am over the text limit

    I am using Theranest for online progress notes and insurance billing. I have found it to be very useful and would recommend Theranest to anyone in healthcare.

    Pros

    The software is very thorough and I am just now finding my way around the insurance billing process but I can see once I create the proper information for clients that billing insurance companies will be a snap. Actually I went to a workshop and the presenter recommended Theranest because her billing problems were solved.

    It is always difficult to get used to new software but once accomplished it will be excellent.

    The monthly cost of a treatment planner in which is minimal insightful assistance is a upcharge sale that will discredit the brand. Offering a session note template or click boxes would’ve ideal for time Management

    The user interface has an engaging and pleasant experience through the thumbnail links and color palette

    Cons

    The interface was not streamlined and required multiple steps to complete an item, ensure by saving the new item, and then requiring a closing process to return to the previous screen and move through this area

    I like the flexibility of the format which allows you to create forms that may better suite your needs. I also like that you can have unlimited staff who can access the platform

    Cons

    I don't like the tiered plan which requires you to pay more money every time that you have additional clients. I also do not like that the functionality of the form creation function. It's not exactly user friendly.

    I love the fact that it's all HIPPA compliant. This feature is central to the whole machinery of the practice. My clients are the most important component of my practice beyond the business of providing therapy. So I appreciate the fact that I can be sure that their information is safe.

    It is easy to use and filing bills is seamless with insurance companies. It checks for common errors before sending which saves time and money.

    When billing clients there is no “tracking” so I know when and/or if I billed them already. I’m going to start a paper log but it would be so much easier if it could be automatically notated within theranest.

    There are such a variety of features on Theranest that it can be adapted for all type of practice or clinician. Customer support is wonderfully helpful.

    I love how easy this system is to work in. However, it is impossible to do a complete and thorough job of payment posting because the software is so simplistic and limited.

    Pros

    This software is very user friendly and easy to understand. It is colorful and you can delete anything you did wrong and redo it.

    Cons

    The adjustments do not work, you have to call your adjustment a write off. There is no way to add adjustment reason codes. There is no way to batch add a check and post the money to all the clients listed on the RA. You have to repost the check for each and every client that received a payment from that RA. There is no way to post a zero payment from insurance to indicate they received the claim but did not pay anything. There is no place to add claim # to charge line.
