When it Comes to Essential Publishing Business Story The Plottr Thickens

Has been an overall great experience.

PROS

Keeping all the information for all of my series in one place makes Plottr my go-to book building software after trying literally EVERY platform found since beginning publishing in 2005. Being able to access the dashboard for all of my books - FICTION and NON FICTION, as well the space for storyboarding and planning my YouTube videos for my books make this the best space for creative project management, world building, and plotting.

CONS

Don't have much I don't like about Plottr. The features and nice-to-haves for the platform have been introduced year-over-yer by the developer. None of my improvement recommednations have anything to do with the product itself. It gets the job done and continues to get better. If you're thinking about getting Plottr, do it.

Reasons for switching to Plottr

None of the other platforms came close to making the experience of plotting enjoyable. The UI and UX of Plottr optimizes the ability to build a world, enjoy the experience, and continue working on a series without worrying about forgetting a detail based on the built in architecture of the platform. Also wasn't a steep learning curve - but working in tech for my traditional corporate profession and being kinda savvy should be taken into consideration.

Best tool for series bible

It's truly been a game-changer for me. I wrote two standalone epic fantasy novels using other software, and was SO glad to discover Plottr when I started on my first epic fantasy trilogy. It has made all my messy thoughts and notes an organized system that I can easily reference, which has saved me time and stress during each of the writing stages.

PROS

Plottr is an essential tool for writers that can be used as a bible. It's easy to keep track of all the details of world-building, characters, and plot structure. I love that I can include ALL the info for entire series (plus spin-off stories) in one place. The visual plotting tool is great, and the templates and categories make it a snap to organize information. I used to use Scrivener for all this, but Plottr is easier to use and has more tools (I do still use Scrivener for the writing process), so I would definitely recommend Plottr to authors who want to keep their work organized!

CONS

Plottr can be a little clunky. I have trouble using the Search feature, as it will bring up documents with the keyword, but not show me where the actual word is in the document (and some of my documents are a couple thousand words!). It's also best for large screens/monitors, since there is a lot going on visually.

Reasons for switching to Plottr

I saw that Plottr had more tools for plotting and organizing notes, and I loved that. Scrivener is great for writing and editing (I still use it for those things), but Plottr holds everything else I need for brainstorming, writing, and editing. I needed a heavy-duty software to hold and organize all the worldbuilding, character, and plotting information, and Plottr has been perfect for this. Plus, I can keep ALL this information for an entire series in one place.

More than a timeline tool for your novel

PROS

I was looking for years for a decent tool to plot my novels, resorting to excel. The timeline plotting view is excellent and makes it simple to plot the scenes in my novel.

CONS

I would use the notes feature more but have got too dependent on the wiki aspects in one note.

Reasons for switching to Plottr

I'm a very visual person and having a simple visual of my novel's timeline is why I'm always excited to use plottr

So Glad I Found Plottr!

I bought an early version and have enjoyed each upgrade and the process of learning as Plottr has grown and changed. It's a great tool to use quickly when I want to get my brainstorming down and get the ideas out of my head. I can then switch things around quickly and change up what I want to do to the plot. I also like that I can plot out multiple projects. It's more basic than some programs out there, and I enjoy that because I don't want a program that is so over-blown I need an engineering degree to understand it.

PROS

I love the templates and how easy it is to use them. I'm a visual person, so being able to lay out my chapters within the Structure of the three or four Acts Plot helps me see where I need to plug holes, lay in twists and turns, and make sure I've accomplished the goals for my characters. I can "see" the layers and it saves me time.

CONS

I'm satisfied with the upgrades made in the past year and have no "cons" to mention.

Reasons for switching to Plottr

Scrivener took too long to learn and wasn't integrated with my computer program at the time.

Great Planning Software

There is a bit of a learning curve, but once achieved I found it to be easy to use and essential to my fiction projects.

PROS

Plottr is now my go-to planning software for any fiction project. Easy to use, intuitive, it's become an essential element of creating plots for books or series fiction. It helps me with research notes, world building, series and book timeline, developing my plots, layering elements, and far more. Great tool for a low price!

CONS

The only con I see is that it isn't integrated into other platform writing software. it's stand alone software

Reasons for switching to Plottr

Much easier to use and designed specifically for fiction.

Vendor Response

Thanks for your review! We're not sure what you mean by "platform writing software", but Plottr does currently integrate with Scrivener, Microsoft Word, and Snowflake Pro.

Plotter is a must for any writer, regardless of your a planner or a pantser!

It's always been easy to use Plottr and I have to say their customer service response is not only almost immediate, they are knowledgeable, friendly and always follow up!

PROS

Every aspect of Plottr is either critical or important to us. So I would have to say that the most important thing for me is that it exists!

CONS

I would like to be able to write my manuscript in Plottr they way I can work in Google docs or Word as I feel the people behind Plottr would create a much better product, than the aforementioned programs.

Reason for choosing Plottr

Best deal for the money, but mostly the fact that it's so easy to use

Organizes a creative mind

Plottr is helping me write faster first drafts. I can sit at my desk with a clear understanding of what my next steps are and the required overall work on my project. It covers the daily tasks and the big picture vision.

PROS

I am a visual writer, and it has always helped me to see my story as it is being constructed. It also allows me to build a series bible for my characters and events so that I do not need to continually reference my books. This software mimics the big white board for me and organizes my thoughts in a way that I don't look like a delusional conspiracy theorist.

CONS

There are some elements of the software that are not intuitive, and it takes some bouncing around to figure out. However, the support team at Plottr are excellent at responding to inquiries and addressing necessary adjustments.

I recommend this to literally everyone

I am loving plottr and I will never go back. I recommend it to literally everyone and it was amazing to use for my six-book series instead of my 142 page google doc. The price is outstanding for what it offers.

PROS

Love the character feature and the timeline features

CONS

It has been buggy in the past but the customer service is the best I've ever encountered. I would like the option of putting things off the timeline, like just out in the open on the backboard if that makes sense, because it's a floating idea

Reasons for switching to Plottr

So simple, so powerful

I used it to plot my work in progress. It was very helpful.

PROS

I love the ability to work out plot ideas visually, to move them to another timeline, to rearrange them. The plot templates are so helpful. The company is extremely responsive, implementing user ideas... without ruining the basic simplicity.

CONS

I was having trouble with vertical drag and drop, but that seems to have been solved. Yay!

Reasons for switching to Plottr

Scrivener crashed on me after last update, and I was not able to get any help from support. I lost a lot of writing. Plottr is simpler. I just take the information and plug it into Google Docs now, keeping both windows open.

Recommended for those needed help with Plotting

I have used / purchased a lot of methods / programs from index cards to a large white board to Excel spreadsheets as well as four other paid programs (which I found confusing, complicated or just not right for me). I signed up for Plottr's 30-day trial, and honestly, expected the same results: a semi-viable product that just wasn't the right fit. However, not only was I impressed that the trial was the "full" program -- with no limitations -- it was exactly what I was looking for. Finally, I felt like I had a partner in my writing journey. In less than a week, I'd concluded this was the right program for my career. It is effective, easy to use, and very cost effective. It also works with programs I already use: Scrivener, Word and DropBox. Now, I am organized and back to writing full-time -- never getting lost, nor losing any past work.

PROS

PLOTTING can be confusing for some writers who have a great story to tell. I am one of those writers when it comes to fiction. Here's why:ORGANIZATION- this program allows to organize all my plots in one place. I am secure in knowing that my hard work will not be lost due to the automatic daily backups. Also, I can switch between my DESKTOP, LAPTOP or IPAD using the latest version that is saved to my DropBox.The various TEMPLATES, which offer precise details regarding Acts, Beats, etc, are immensely helpful in getting me through the Muddy Middle of my plot. Particularly if I have multiple characters and plot lines.PROJECTS can be a single book or a "series." I use them for similar writing, such as Short Story Horror. While the books are not part of a chronological series, they are grouped together under one umbrella.CHARACTERS, even in the "series" option of the project, can be assigned to a particular book, along with TAGS or LOCATIONS. The VIDEO and online TIPS are extremely helpful. It's like having a mentor at the click of a button.BACKUPS and EXPORTING are a tremendous plus. The program automatically backs up the daily work, and the ability to export to Word or Scrivener is a huge plus.

CONS

Honestly, I can't find one CON, Except that the product is new and improving, so at this time (11-2022), I'd like to see more YA, MG and Children's templates and/or specific Videos.

Reason for choosing Plottr

Plottr is far easier to use and understand than other programs I have tried.

Plottr Makes Writing A Joy

I could not be more pleased with this software, the ease of use, and especially the technical support. I find the team at Plottr to be almost instantaneously responsive, super helpful, and extremely kind. I have recommended the software to my writing community, and will continue to do so.

PROS

The full integration of the timeline, scene cards, and character details makes this software my only choice in writing. The ability to write the full text of my novel in each scene card, and them move then throughout the timeline as details develop is critical. Color coding helps to keep the status of each phase in order, and the export to MS Word feature means I don't have to do the work twice.

CONS

The only negative is that when I save a project with a new name (for archive purposes), the software opens a new window with the newly named file. Although this can be a little clunky, I am comfortable working around that small glitch, because I'd much rather have confirmation that the file was saved with the new name, than unsure, and potentially lose a new iteration of my story. So this isn't really a "con", but more of a note about a specific learning curve I experienced. It certainly isn't something that would ever move me away from using Plottr!

Reasons for switching to Plottr

Power Structure was no longer supported. I found that Plottr had nearly all the same features, and some I didn't anticipate like personal template creation and pre-designed templates. I also love having the ability to add various attribute cards wherever I need them. This software is a far greater value than Power Structure, mostly because of the integrated timeline features.

MORE than a Plotting Tool

Plottr helped me solve a MAJOR book organizing problem. I was overwhelmed with all the notes and ideas I had in physical notebooks, on my computer files, and as bookmarks. I tend to think visually so Plttr's format was the perfect solution! Yet, what makes Plttr great is how easy it is to create categories, attributes, tags and notes as a way to better organize my ideas. I also LOVE that Plttr was designed with the writer in mind. The templates and categories for "Location" and "Character" for example make it user friendly for writers. They get it! And they are always improving and listening to customer feedback to make their product even better.

PROS

What I love most about this software, aside from the excellent customer support and enthusiasm of the founders, is how multi-faceted Plttr is. I can use it for my writing projects AND for planning and organizing. Because of this, I now use Plttr more than any other program on my computer.

CONS

Plottr needs to fix the "undo" feature for the desktop version and improve that cut and paste feature as well. Whenever I try to cut and paste larger sections there can be delays.

Reason for choosing Plottr

I love to use Plttr more than Scrivener because I can visually see and physically move notes around easier. I can use Plttr not only for plotting (which it does a great job of, especially with their amazing templates) but also for planning and coordinating on so many levels. This feature is GOLDEN, because I can do more things in ONE place.

Storing books, series, characters, information

I have used three or four other programs. Each of which does some portion of what Plottr does. They are no easier for me to use because nothing is intended for people who have disabilities, or even take that possibility into consideration. Frankly, with all of us writers out there getting older, and older, more programs need to take an aging population into consideration.

PROS

I like that I am able to include pictures with names and information in one spot. I also enjoyed being able to put titles and pictures on specific blocks, to show me how many books in the series I had planned with tentative covers. And I started plotting out the scenes of a book which helped in writing it in order. I usually don't plot, but this is a mystery and certain things have to come first, so it was good to have a place to keep that information in the right order like when you need to drop a clue so that no one knows that's what it is but it's there Etc.

CONS

Because I have visual issues, little token marks are totally lost for me when trying to find my way around any program. I need large readable words that say, this is what this does, you dummy. I like the idea of templates. I used a couple of them, changing them slightly from what they were intended. But I would really like to import my style of template, which isn't based on any of the current programs.

Reason for choosing Plottr

Not over, in addition to.

Reasons for switching to Plottr

It was more writer-friendly. The previous program was more about building the worldview and keeping that stored in separate areas. But all riding does not take World building, mostly just fantasy or historical novels.

Targeted Focus Makes Plottr Actually Useful

PROS

I like that it just focuses on the plotting. It doesn't try be all things, and that makes the software so much more accessible, and so much better for incorporating into my existing process. I have set it up as a series bible and I like that everything is easily found and catagorised. That was why I bought Plottr as my previous 'notes in a document' method was too confused and I was losing track of things. I have tried out some other popular writing software before and never managed to get on with it, as it was too much. It was writing, it was plotting, it was formatting etc. Plottr does what it does, and it does it well. That was what I wanted. Plus I am very happy that I can buy the software once and that it doesn't stop working. So many systems now are subscription only. I may very well purchase the updates as the price is reasonable but if I don't, I don't lose everything. I'm probably more likely to make subsequent purchases as I don't feel forced into it.

CONS

I wish that the tags were clickable. So if I assign a character to something then I could click on the tag and be taken to that character. I would like to be able to mark off scenes when I have written them, and have the outline scroll down to the scene I am working on rather than just always being at the top. But these are tiny little things (well maybe not little in terms of programming) but what I mean is they aren't vital. It would be nice to have but I'm not frustrated as they aren't there. The software does everything I need and I have been pleased at how well I have got on with it.

I love plottr

It helps me answer the big questions and also let’s me see the overall plot which is a big thing with plottr. I have begun to notice my weak spots in my books because of this software.

PROS

Plottr allows me to plot my novels on the go. It also has great features and is easy to use with templates galore.

CONS

I wish there was a way to separate characters. I want to just make a series with the books with their own characters. Right now it’s all in one place. If we could customize each book in the series it would be awesome.

The most versatile and powerful tool I have found for plotting

We use this product for developing books series and plotting specific books. I know it would be just as useful in developing plans for many purposes. It's my intention to use it for other aspects of my business as well. I love Plottr. I have a background in software and coding and find this package particularly appealing. I couldn't have dreamed up anything better myself.

PROS

I love how easy it is to move things around. You can insert new chapters, scenes, timelines, character sheets, etc, anywhere and add as much or as little description as you want. Adding notes doesn't bog down your plot. It's all easily accessible. I do a lot of research and develop many aspects to my characters and plots that never enter my books, and Plottr is the only tool I have found that is MORE helpful for plotting than the collection of programs and methods I devised for myself before. We have a team of authors working together that Varida publishes for and Plottr is one of the main tools we offer to all of them.

CONS

I haven't used all of Plottr's features. They are always adding new ones and they have quite a few tutorials I ought to check out. Is that a con? Not really. But it's my only regret. I don't take the time to learn more about it. When I first bought it, it was immediately useful and I just barreled ahead with what I needed it for.

Excellent software for outlining novels

This has streamlined my process with outlining new manuscripts, and with tracking details in existing manuscripts as I edit. It's also good as a series bible; it's a good place to fill in details about characters, locations, etc. before tackling a new book in an existing series.

PROS

It's pretty intuitive and the learning curve is extremely shallow. It's full of features I use all the time, without being cluttered with extraneous stuff. It performs a moderately simple function, very well. For example, I played briefly with Scrivener and abandoned it because it was hopelessly complex. Plottr is specialized; it's an excellent tool for outlining and for tracking endless details about characters, places, events, etc.

CONS

I'd really like it if there was a timeline feature. I've worked around it by adding a row to the scene list with the day of the week for each scene, but I wish it was integrated. I'm also mildly irritated by the way I have to move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and scroll right every time I insert a new scene in the timeline. It's exasperating when I'm filling in a dozen scenes in a row.

Reason for choosing Plottr

Excel is not optimized for novel outlining. Scrivener is expensive and Mac-oriented.

Great product for Plotters and Plantsters!

Once I figured out the basic functions of Plottr, I really started enjoying it. [sensitive content hidden] was at a writing conference and he gave me some tips on additional ways to use Plottr and it has really helped me take advantage of the functionality Plottr has.

PROS

Plottr doesn't work the way my brain works. That's why I struggled with it at first. I've always done a traditional outline. Plottr forced me to break things down more than just an outline. I can actually see how the puzzle pieces fit and how a subplot fits into the story. Plottr has made it possible for me to actually write novel length fiction.

CONS

I wish the outlines were better. Or I wish there was a way to write an outline first and have that populate the timeline then use the timeline to fill in the blanks.

Why Plottr helped me finish writing my book

Writing is mostly re-writing and revising. You cannot move forward in the publishing process until you have a first draft. Something that took me a long time to come to terms with. As an indie author, Plottr has made it easy to get through the writing process faster. Its robust templates feature makes it easier to get through the first draft much quicker. It's also easier to keep track of research notes (which is crucial not to get lost in the sea of research notes), retrieve them when you need them, use them in your writing, and give proper citations.I also use the templates for sales descriptions, video scripts, and blog posts, simplifying the process and making it easy to integrate storytelling into the messaging.

PROS

The Templates Feature of Plottr sold it for me. The training materials, especially the educational videos, are extremely useful.

CONS

As with any writing app, you must get used to the features, which takes time. If you are not someone who has used other writing apps, it might feel overwhelming at first.

9/10, would recommend!

PROS

Honestly, what isn't there to love? I love Plottr's timeline feature and the character tab is one of my favorite to use. I also love the templates they include: they lay out the beats needed for each story arch and explain them in great detail. One of my favorite things, though, is that they have video tutorials for how to use their features! If you're lost, someone will walk you through it and make that feature super easy to understand. I think their timeline tutorial I watched was less than 5 minutes and I didn't have any issues with using the timeline after that. Not that you need the tutorials: I'd say its user-friendly on its own.

CONS

I wish there was a feature to draft in Plottr. I know that's probably not the ideal function of the app for the developers, which is totally fine, but I like having an all-in-one tool. I'm more of a pantser, so I like having a place to store plot ideas and draft scenes in snippets. But otherwise, I'd definitely recommend Plottr to people - and have before!

I like to flow but I found committing to Plottr helped me organize the plot line and ensure key moments were appropriately placed. I also like the flexibility the Plot Line provides. I typically start with tentative chapter titles, then a plot line with the timeline, another plot line with a summary of the chapters, followed by a plot line with each scene. The scene level is where I put my notes. The drag and drop is wonderful. There are also many tutorials that are very well done covering every aspect of Plottr.

CONS

After reflecting for a moment, nothing comes to mind. It does a great job for what it is intended.

The tool I was looking for

Plottr is THE software I was looking for. When I write a movie, I used to work on index cards because I love to move things around, but I don't have enough space in my office, so it wasn't always easy. Plottr solved that and now I can write how much as I want and as many virtual index cards as I need to put together my movie.

PROS

Writing scenes on virtual index cards and being able to move them around. The ability to use different plot lines for various characters' arcs.

CONS

I honestly don't know what to say about cons because Plottr has everything I need. Sure, there are some features that I don't use, but I can't say they are "cons". The only thing I miss is the ability to put the "index cards" wherever I want (at the moment, it's linear: one must follow the previous one along the same line. It'd be awesome if I could put something up and down, here and there, and be able to connect them on the same line.)
