## Reviews summary

- Overall rating: 4.6/5
- Total reviews: 4,225

### Secondary ratings

- Ease of use: 4.6/5
- Customer support: 4.4/5
- Value for money: 4.5/5
- Functionality: 4.5/5

### Rating distribution

- 5 stars: 3,062 reviews (72%)
- 4 stars: 884 reviews (21%)
- 3 stars: 164 reviews (4%)
- 2 stars: 46 reviews (1%)
- 1 star: 69 reviews (2%)

### Most mentioned pros

- I especially appreciated the automation features, which made processes like tax filings and employee payments much more efficient. While there are some limitations with customization and pricing for more advanced features, the convenience and reliability of the system make it a strong option for small to mid-sized businesses.
- The location tracking feature is particularly helpful, as it allows employees to manually clock in, clock out, and take breaks within our building's geofence all from their phones!
- To ability to manage employee hours & pay, has helped streamline and manage many aspects for our small business.

### Most mentioned cons

- I’ve also experienced occasional delivery issues, including missing ingredients, spoiled food, and even meat or fish being included in a plant-based order. While customer support is generally responsive and tries to compensate for mistakes, refunds are usually provided as account credit towards a future box rather than resolving the immediate problem.
- Being limited to one external bank account for transfers is a negative compared to other checkign accounts. After I get my pay in multiple accounts, I consolidate them in one account for credit card payments.
- Difficulty Reaching a Human: While the help center is extensive, many users report that during high-stress times (like year-end tax filing), getting a live representative on the phone or chat can take a long time.

My overall experience with Gusto has been extremely positive. It's a robust system at a low cost. They have great guides and their staff is very knowledgeable and helpful for any questions you may have. It's a great resource for smaller organizations!

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Gusto is a great resource for HR and employee management needs. The cost is extremely low, especially compared to alternative options, making it much more cost effective for nonprofits looking for resources for small business management. It is easy to use and customize for your own organization's specific needs, even for novice computer users. The customer support has been extremely helpful, and they're always willing to look into any bugs or issues you may experience.

#### Cons

Gusto has built up quite a bit since I first started using it, so many of the things that were "wishes" for the software have been worked out or added. I think the only thing I would suggest is allowing another type of user for payroll processing without admin authority.

#### Reasons for choosing Gusto

Gusto was much cheaper than Quickbooks Payroll, and much easier to learn and use.

It’s still overall slightly better than ADP. Gusto has a clock in feature that is an add on with company accounts. They also have a debit card that arrived in a couple of days.

#### Cons

I was automatically opted into their retirement , I like to have a say in my retirement options. I had to double check my details in that portion of the app.

#### Reasons for switching to Gusto

The company switched products because Gusto cost less in different ways.

Overall, I've had a positive experience with Gusto Payroll while managing a small business. The platform was reliable, easy to use, and handled payroll processing efficiently. Employee onboarding, tax filings, and payroll administration were straightforward, which saved us a significant amount of time.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5

#### Pros

Their customer support was responsive and helpful whenever questions or issues came up. The overall value is strong compared to similar payroll providers, offering a good balance of features and cost.

#### Cons

While Gusto generally works well, some advanced features and integrations may not be as robust as those offered by larger company focused payroll services. As a small business user, this wasn't an issue, but businesses with more complex HR or payroll requirements may eventually outgrow some of the platform's capabilities.

#### Reasons for choosing Gusto

Paycor was more costly and did not have very good reviews.

#### Reasons for switching to Gusto

I manage a small business Gusto was more cost effective.

Overall, Gusto is very user friendly platform that allows you to link benefit deductions as well as calculates your taxes and withholdings. It also handles your W2 and 1099s. Although the basic package is affordable you can run into higher costs for essential addons such as time tracking.

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

The feature I like most about Gusto is that it will allow you to run payroll as often as needed without extra charges for standard processing and it allows new hires to enter their own information regarding direct deposit and deductions which is time saving for administrative.

#### Cons

The thing I like least about Gusto is that customer support is only during weekday hours. There is no weekend availability.

My overall experience with Gusto was very positive. The platform made payroll and employee management simple, organized, and much less time-consuming. I liked the user-friendly interface, automation, and convenience of having important HR and payroll tasks in one place. While there are a few areas that could be improved, Gusto was reliable and easy to use overall. I would recommend it to businesses looking for a straightforward payroll and HR solution.

#### Ratings breakdown

I also appreciated the automated features, which helped reduce manual work and made it easier to stay on top of payroll deadlines and employee records. Overall, Gusto provided a convenient and user-friendly experience.

#### Cons

What I liked least about Gusto was that some of the more advanced features and options could be difficult to find or understand at first. Pricing can also become a concern as your business grows and you need additional features. While the platform is generally easy to use, a few areas could benefit from more customization and clearer guidance.

For a company our size it does what we need. Payroll runs clean, taxes get filed, and my field guys can access their stuff from their phones between jobs. It's not fancy but it keeps us compliant and saves me from spending all day on administrative work. Worth the monthly cost just for the time it gives back.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

Running payroll for field crews used to eat up half my Friday. Now it's maybe 20 minutes. The tax filing happens automatically which is huge since we operate across three states. Time-off tracking actually works for our techs who are always on different job sites. New hire paperwork gets handled digitally so I'm not chasing down forms from guys in the field.

#### Cons

The benefits setup was confusing at first, took me a couple tries to get it right. Reporting options are pretty basic - I have to export to Excel when I need to analyze labor costs by project. Would be nice if it integrated with our field service software instead of being its own island.

#### Cons

It does take a bit of practice or at least consistent usage to be able to navigate through all the features quickly. However, it's not something that I will say is too difficult either.

Gusto has been a sigh of relief, making managing my team easier than ever. The ability to upload updates to policies and procedures and have them signed on off has taken the leg work out of making changes.

#### Ratings breakdown

#### Pros

The ability to easily upload documents for employees to sign. The ability to easily approve and deny paid time off requests. To ability to manage employee hours & pay, has helped streamline and manage many aspects for our small business.

#### Cons

I am not a fan of the inability to submit time off requests if hours are not in the bank. At my business we utilize time off accrual and if the hours are not there even if they will be at the time for the request it will not allow you to request that time.

Gusto works best as a payroll-focused checking account, not as your financial command center. It excels at getting you paid reliably, often early, and without confusion. If that’s your main goal, it delivers. If you want robust banking tools or fast individual support, you’ll likely need a second bank alongside it.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 4/5
- Functionality: 4/5

#### Pros

Consistent, on-time payroll deposits. Paychecks arrive when they’re supposed to, which is the bare minimum but still worth praising. Early direct deposit. Funds often show up up to two days early, which actually helps instead of just sounding helpful. Simple, clean interface. Pay stubs, tax documents, and transaction history are easy to find and easy to read. No hidden fees. No monthly maintenance fees or surprise deductions quietly stealing lunch money. Clear pay breakdowns. Earnings, deductions, and year-to-date totals are transparent and straightforward.

#### Cons

Limited banking features. This is a checking account, not a full-service bank. No joint accounts, limited bill pay, and minimal extras. Support favors employers. If you’re just an employee with a problem, response times can feel slower than they should. Cash deposits are inconvenient. Not ideal if you still live in the physical-currency world. Few customization options. Alerts, budgeting tools, and spending controls are pretty basic.

Overall, it was fine when we were a small sized company. As we got closer to 50+ is when the problems began. Benefits were always having issues with file feeds and Gusto did some backend pay adjustments without informing us first, which caused problems. But like i said, under 50, it's a good solution.

#### Cons

I don't like the customer service, it's an email and it can takes an extended amount of time to get any issues resolved. I also didn't like that you couldn't do any mass uploads. They're still sending us emails even though we cut services over 3 years ago.

Great for organizing direct pay and your company and tax documents. However the banking features are limited such as only having one external account, no bill pay, no Zelle.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 5/5
- Value for money: 5/5
- Customer support: 5/5

#### Pros

Very easy to split payments and make changes. Availability of various background and tax documents is also very good, easy to find.

#### Cons

Being limited to one external bank account for transfers is a negative compared to other checkign accounts. After I get my pay in multiple accounts, I consolidate them in one account for credit card payments. This makes it hard as I need to go to those accounts, transfer from them to another and that to Gusto etc. Also they advertised they offered free tax prep with April, but after I prepared my tax return I saw that this only applied if you had taxes back, not taxes due, which wasn't stated clearly in the offer. Also the banking features are limited for example there is no bill pay. Or Zelle integration.

Excellent. I have a small business and it interfaces perfectly with my tax/bookkeeping folks. It suits my personal needs as well, since the information I access is required for non-business needs, including loan and other financial matters.

#### Pros

Easy to use, great accessibility for needed documents like W-2, paystubs, tax returns, etc. The login is reasonable easy, and it's easy to find the information I need - in particular the tax and paystub information described above, which is often needed for nonbusiness issues as well.

#### Cons

I've had no negative issues with Gusto. The site is reliable - it has not been down when I've needed it.

Gusto covers all the relevant functions for our daily HR work. The interface and operation are simple and clear. The individual customization options for time tracking and digital personnel file management make it much easier to use.

#### Ratings breakdown

- Ease of use: 4/5
- Value for money: 4/5
- Customer support: 5/5
- Functionality: 5/5

#### Pros

Time tracking is made easy with a start/stop function or the option to manually add time. You can also set a time limit so that subsequent changes are only possible for a certain number of days. The administrator role allows you to view and edit all time accounts. However, if someone changes something, it is displayed by name in the overtime overview, so all changes can be tracked.

#### Cons

It would be nice if the tool also allowed regular feedback discussions to be recorded directly in the tool and not just uploaded as a single document to the employee.

#### Vendor response
