### About RIB SpecLink

SpecLink is a construction specification software designed to help businesses enhance the specification process at every stage of the construction lifecycle. Key features include document management, master specification content, WYSIWYG editor, choice lists, and intelligent links.

Teams using SpecLink can automatically convert Revit files into VIM (Virtual Information Modeling) files through Unity 3D gaming technology. The virtual models allow managers to isolate individual layers or objects within the model, view information embedded in the BIM objects, and highlight BIM objects on-screen. Additionally, the platform enables users to compare changes against previous versions to identify additions or the latest changes to the model.

SpecLink lets teams synchronize BIM models and specs to facilitate coordination and identify potential conflicts. Pricing is available on annual subscription and support is extended via live chat, phone, email, and online inquiry form.

Firm Specification Manager's Perspective.

5

Having used SpecLink at other firms in the past, using tools that have been vetted out for my company's preferences and lesson's learned helps streamline the 'spec writing' process. Now that I am managing the office masters at my current firm, I have confidence that when others produce specs, they are as up to date and correct as possible. When this idea was first presented to upper management, the cost was deemed very valuable for the benefits.

Functionality

Pros:

Ease of switching paragraphs on or off compared to word where I would be deleting things. Also, being notified of updates to references rather than having to do research myself or finding out about errors after the fact.

Cons:

I have not been able to add manufacturer 'tracked' content to my company's master specification sections. This would be a great benefit to other design team members that are referencing this material, so that outdated manufacturer information does not enter current sections.

Reasons for choosing RIB SpecLink

I am familiar with this product from other firms. Ease of use and cost/value.

Reasons for switching to RIB SpecLink

Word documents do not provide the tools and features that SpecLink does.

Vendor Response

Brad, thank you for sharing your detailed perspective and for highlighting how SpecLink has helped streamline your firm’s spec writing process while building confidence in producing accurate, up-to-date documents. We’re glad to hear features like paragraph toggling and reference update notifications are adding efficiency and value to your workflow. We also appreciate your feedback on adding tracked manufacturer content, as this is a meaningful suggestion for improving collaboration and content accuracy across teams. Our support team is always here to help explore solutions and ensure you’re getting the most from the platform.

All our specs are in one place. Must quicker to turn sections on and off than retyping entire spec sections. Allows for standardized specs across the firm.

Cons:

It can be a little unintuitive on what exactly you are turning on and off. I also would like to see some sort of reference function where turning off something in part 1 also turns it off in 2 and 3.

SpecLink for a sole practitioner

Overall, implementing SpecLink has been a timesaver. It is easy to use, powerful, and works better than its competition. Their customer service is very good, and they are very helpful with onboarding. They listen to their users, and they are actively updating and improving the platform.

4

Functionality

Pros:

It is easy to get up and running on SpecLink. The interface is fast, and editing is efficient. Content is updated regularly, and the updates can easily be applied to projects in process. It is not hard to edit their masters to create your own master. Thier content is not the same as the MasterSpec licensed from AIA, and it is less verbose. In most cases I have found that it covers the same content more efficiently.

Cons:

It would be nice to have the option to license the AIA MasterSpec content and use the RIB interface, but it's not practical at this time. Importing outside master sections into SpecLink is challenging. Each section needs to be tagged and labeled just so, and it's necessary to carefully check the imported section to make sure that choices and content are showing up as intended. They are working on making the process better, but it is still challenging. Importing consultant sections for printing a project manual is also challenging, so I use a different product to assemble project manuals. As a cloud-based system, there is little capability to edit specs when offline. There is a lot of as-yet-untapped potential in this product to better leverage the tagging and crosslinking capabilities. For instance, specifying sustainability requirements, coordinating sections that are cross-referenced, and marking sections with a percentage of completion. I hope to see them develop these capabilities soon.

Reasons for switching to RIB SpecLink

Deltek stopped developing their outdated Word interface and rolled out a web interface that doesn't work well. It doesn't have the necessary ease of use, speed, flexibility, and function.

Vendor Response

Hi Ivy, Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Pros:

I've tried many Architectural specification writing applications, and RIB SpecLink is by far the most intuitive and accurate tool that I have found for producing specifications. I also like how the program constantly updates products. It also seems to be competitive in cost to others available.

Cons:

While intuitive once you get into the program, there is a bit of a learning curve to understanding selections, input, etc. There are adequate tools to help you learn if you take the time to utilize them.

Reasons for switching to RIB SpecLink

Zerodocks was not an available selection above so I chose ZeroBounce to get through the selection. I was not happy with the amount of work and the short form aspect of the software.

Pros:

Automatic Updates Consistent Header/Footer info Takes more time Too many options Vendor specs need removed from sections

Cons:

Too many options within each section that give you a headache after editing each section. Manufacturers sections should not be placed within a general category. (i.e. - Access control has Brivo inside of the general section. That should be a sub section under the General section) Div 27 1000 has too much inside of that one section. It should follow the CSI Master Spec sections with each of those a subsection under 271000. Some clients require that their entire spec be inserted into the documents. No easy way to bring it in with all of the formatting so that all of the paragraphs align to their masterspec.
