My overall experience with The EDGE has been positive. I think it is a very capable estimating platform, particularly for commercial roofing, where estimates can become extremely detailed and involve a large number of materials, conditions, labor components, and pricing variables. The ability to perform the takeoff and build the estimate within the same platform is one of its biggest advantages. I also find the customization and depth of the system valuable because it allows us to build estimates around our own materials, labor rates, assemblies, and estimating practices rather than forcing everything into a generic format. At the same time, I think there is room for improvement in the overall user experience. Some processes could be more intuitive and efficient, and navigating larger estimates can sometimes feel more cumbersome than it should. That said, once you understand how the software is structured and have your databases and estimating practices established, The EDGE can be a very powerful tool. Being able to perform the takeoff and have those quantities flow directly into the estimate is a major advantage, particularly on larger commercial roofing projects. I also like the depth of the roofing-specific database and the ability to build and customize conditions, assemblies, materials, labor, and pricing around how our company actually estimates work. The roofing-specific functionality is another major positive, especially for items such as tapered insulation, fasteners, standing seam, and the various components that can make commercial roofing estimates complicated. The ability to create scenarios and make changes without having to rebuild the estimate is also very useful for alternates, value engineering, and change orders. Overall, The EDGE has a lot of depth and gives an experienced estimator a great deal of control over the estimate. #### Cons The biggest downside to The EDGE is that its depth can also make it more complicated than it needs to be. There are a lot of capabilities within the software, but some functions and workflows are not particularly intuitive, especially when you are trying to accomplish something outside of the more basic estimating process. The user interface and navigation could also use some modernization and streamlining. I would like to see fewer steps required for common estimating tasks and more flexibility in how information is viewed and manipulated within an estimate. Working with large, complicated commercial roofing estimates can also become cumbersome, particularly when you need to make widespread changes or review a large amount of information. I think the software has the functionality to be an excellent estimating platform, but the user experience could be improved significantly. There are also a few bugs when rounding up that reset some items that cannot be rounded back to 1. More bids completed in less time is a Good Thing! #### Cons I have no cons, at first when we switched from version 10 to 12 it seemed unnecessary as we were so used to the Version 10. After using it for a while there is actually not much difference. We began using the edge years ago using the digitizing boards to now using Version 12 with the cloud based system and image manager. Setting up the software to our company's specific job codes is also crucial for our estimating and cost tracking process. #### Cons on the current Version 12 I am having difficulties adding images to an existing condition/bid. The ease of use seems harder than the pervious Version 10. While the majority of the time I love the functionality and practicality of The EDGE, I've run into a few "glitches" as well as a few things I believe could be added/changed with the next version. Please see my thoughts below. 1. Look up Database (Misc., stud, board, anything) shows No items to display happens a few times a month. Have to restart Edge. 2. Option to lock in Board heights so that it does not change when changing stud heights. 3. 6 Mil poly Labour shows up under prices. 4. More Track options in soffits. Can have 8 stud types but only 2 tracks. 5. Option to automatically allow for curved/flex tracks at walls plus arch bead and ¼ board at soffitss and arch molding at ceilings when using convert to arch 6. Allow same bead ( 3 counts) options for furred walls as there is for regular partitions. 7. There is a user code for special labour but not for special material. 8. Molding swap outs for acoustic ceilings to allow for C channel @ radiant heat panels and flex molding at curved walls 9. Would like an undo button for deleting conditions, pages etc. 10. Add a Notes page that can be added to the pages tab to put reminders, scope items, exclusions, etc. 11. Option to save Stocking and other Reports as pdf for e-mailing to suppliers. 12. Add condition for ceiling board swap outs 13. Multi condition selection tool does not always capture interior soffit, ocl. (May be more, only noticed with this one) Again I would like to reiterate that day to day I love the EDGE, these are just a few things i've noticed over the past couple of years. It makes estimating process for new bids or contracts and any additional work required done with ease. I really enjoy using the edge for my fireproofing take-offs. The simple design of the user interface makes it quite easy to use, and their technical department is very responsive to questions and dealing with the back-of-house operations if changes with-in the program need to be done. This program allows me to greatly increase my production as an estimator in both the quantity and quality of my estimates for my company. With the ability to upload drawings directly into program, I have gone paperless in my estimates, saving my company money in the long run by not having to order or print out drawings anymore. I own another take-off software that is a great tool for measuring, but doesn't have the integrated condition builder and pricing features. Scanning through some of the other reviews here, let me assure you, that the negative reviews are from those who don't have the correct operating system to run Edge functions or the user just doesn't understand how to use the system. Construction take-off's are only as easy as your understanding of the part and pieces (conditions) required for an accurate take-off. The Edge Estimating System is the only software I would suggest for on-screen take-offs with the ability to hand-enter if you're so inclined. I prefer on-screen as there is 0 chance of losing a condition in transfer. #### Cons You can't load large pdf's at one time. Can't view more than one screen at a time (would be nice to be able to open a detail page and measure parts while building the condition). Oftentimes tech support is figuring out, or not figuring out, the issues real time that I have instead of having solutions. I wish you could have two jobs running simultaneously to compare trends, this makes it tough to compare without screenshotting one job then comparing.
