I have looked for alternatives for about a year now and hate to admit that there really isn't anything better. No other programme has the same ease of use - fast input, easy rearranging, and the ability to be keyboard only. I use quire to plan experiments which have many moving parts and can be difficult to schedule properly. The infinite nesting of lists and timeline view make this so easy. The integrations are not the best, for example some calendar syncing apps do not copy over the item description or breadcrumbs so it can be hard to get context.
