Not perfect as a word processor, but the gold standard for collaboration

Google Docs is the gold standard for document collaboration and sharing. You can send a link so that everyone always sees the latest file (instead of emails bouncing back and forth), you can give and get and accept feedback. Word is the better processor, but OneDrive is unreliable at best for filesharing and the collaborative features in OneDrive are just awful. For anything that will be seen by anyone but me, Google Docs is all I use.

PROS

Google Docs makes it SO easy to collaborate with others on documents, give, request, and incorporate comments, and share files that can be updated in realtime. For collaboration and sharing, Google Docs is the only platform I use.

CONS

As a word processor, it doesn't have all the great features that Word has. It's not ideal for creating a new document if you need a lot of formatting options (ESPECIALLY tables, which are a nightmare in Docs). Luckily, you can always just upload a document you've created in Word to Docs and it does a pretty good job keeping formatting.

Reasons for switching to Google Docs

OneDrive's file sharing rarely works (I think there's something wrong with their 1drv.ms domain), and even when it does, collaboration is nonexistent/awful in Word. I gave up trying to share and collaborate through Word directly a long time ago.

Certainly performing well...

While the program isn't perfect, Google Docs is by far the most easily accessible and widely used word editing programs. It excels at what it needs to do, but lacks on what it could do.

PROS

To start, Docs get's everything you need done. Editing, typing, sharing—it's all easily done. In a school or work environment, the commenting mode and ability to share documents easily makes working extremely efficient. In comparison, a traditional document editor would require you to manually send the file, have the other party edit it, then send it back. In docs, being able to instantly see any edits or comments another person makes is a huge time-saver. Docs is also extremely compatible with other types of files, and even can transcribe PDF files. It's also capable of converting your current doc into other formats, which is helpful since you won't have to use a third-party website/application to do so. While being a common feature in other editing programs, the auto save feature is handy, as it saves every time a change is made, even if it's just a single letter. On top of that, Docs also stores previous versions of your document, which I personally found very useful when back-referencing older revisions of essays and other papers. Lastly, Docs runs constant grammar and spelling checks, which is great for when you are typing in a rush and misspell a word or type something out awkwardly. Not only that, but the detection is always improving, and is even able to detect proper nouns (like names) and recognize that they aren't spelled wrong because they are meant to be spelled that way.

CONS

Despite it's strengths, Google Docs holds a few annoying points. A major disappointment lies in the lack of font support. While some of the major, non-standard fonts like IBM Plex Sans are available, a majority of the fonts that are available aren't well-known or widely used, which led me to using the same 4-5 fonts over and over again. There is no option to add third-party fonts either, which isn't ideal for those of us that have a selection of them on our computers. Despite Doc's simple design, it's actually a huge resource hog for both internet bandwidth and RAM. While it may not be noticeable on a decent computer, it's especially noticeable on computers that aren't from the last 4 years or so. Loading Docs onto my laptop from a few years ago brought it to its knees, and forced me to use an alternative. While Docs has plenty of shortcuts for its most commonly used tools, not every tool has a shortcut. On top of that, there are no options to bind our own shortcuts to a tool, which is a huge problem for those of us that have to write heavily formatted, non-traditional styled documents. Lastly, table creation and editing in Docs is still yet to be ideal. Each line in a table is treated as a separate line, meaning that you have to either edit each line or all the lines at once, which makes it inconvenient to create visually appealing tables.

One of the best out there, but should leave the physical world behind!

PROS

Google Docs is almost unparalleled when it comes to document creation and sharing! The ability to add comments, go into feedback mode, make tasks from comments, are all crucial and things I use weekly if not daily. I love how by default margins and page breaks are gone since it's rare we need to print things at this point.

CONS

I think Google Docs could go even further into the world of digital-only files. One thing I would LOVE for them to implement are collapsible sections so that documents are much easier to navigate and scan through. If I have three massive sections to a Doc, I'd like to hide the other two to focus on the one I'm working on. Also please implement a Latex integration for math and rich text in the form of code blocks.

Reasons for switching to Google Docs

My current lab doesn't use Dropbox! The last place I worked at did!

Most Effective Writing Programme

It's still the finest writing/document programme I've used thus far. It may cause some anxiety to add emails, but the accessibility feature for emails needs to be improved.

PROS

Google Document is quick and simple, and using files and subfolders to organise data is simple. In order to retrieve documents without having to slide through files, you can search by keyword, date, and time.

CONS

Sharing documents through email or other app is not always simple. Sometimes customers send me emails complaining that they can't open the files.

Google Docs Review

Great thanks to my mentor, since he introduced Google Docs 11 years ago in our volunteering work for the community, I've been a loyal user of Google Docs. I successfully manage to implement my Google Docs-savviness into my offices' work, as well as for my current business afterwards. I often stored files from the resource speakers as my Google Docs and shared them to all participants at easy and no hassle. I also stored the files as my Google Docs for my business portfolio to showcase to potential clients, and even share them for my happy client. The benefits cannot be counted, Google Docs saved my life!

PROS

I remember the first time I was being introduced to use Google Docs was in 2008 by my mentor, Sylvain Henry from Canada, it was like, wow....this online tool is super efficient and superb! It's integrated seamlessly with our Gmail account along with other fantastic Google Products. It's very easy to use, even for first timer. I no longer have to worry searching for my missing files from my harddisk because I did not have the chance to create the backup files, because I can rely on Google Docs for sure that is stored in the cloud. Which means I could open it whenever I want to. Now Google Docs is even getting cool! I can use Voice Typing feature whenever I have any ideas come up in my mind, without worrying I need to type them and those briliant ideas could possibly vanish into thin air if I type them one by one. Furthermore, Google Docs provides such amazing templates, which makes my work a lot easier. In addition, I also often use Google Forms to create event registration that has a function also as a survey for my clients.

CONS

When I don't have an internet connection, then I cannot open my files inside my Google Docs. I have to download all the files into my harddisk as a backup. Would it be possible to make all my files in Google Doc are automatically stored offline into my harddisk in the near future?

Reason for choosing Google Docs

I’ve known Google Docs for such quite a long time, so I prefer to use it because I don’t want to re-learn from zero in using new online tool. Besides that, although EverNote can be integrated into email and other online tools, I still feel some hassle in doing so compared to Google Docs.

Google Docs Review

Google docs is the best doc editing / collaboration software I've ever used. It's fast, stable and easy to get started. It accepts most popular file formats, files can be downloaded in a variety of formats, files are auto-saved and easy to share your documents as well as keep them private.

PROS

Google docs has several advantages that I like the most: 1. It saves on the cloud, meaning you can edit the doc on one of your device and review it on the other; 2. The powerful simultaneous editing by multiple users - google docs has the most powerful thread management system which tracks the order of editing and this makes the usage very easy and convenient; 3. Its powerful commenting system - one can almost comment on every single element of the doc and start a conversation discussing about it; 4. Its powerful admin system - this grants different power / authority to different users to the doc allowing them managing, editing and viewing. Overall, this is the number 1 option of text editing collaboration software.

CONS

Only several nits making it less convenient: 1. Only works as fast as your internet connection; 2. One must login to use it; 3. Missing some advanced formatting and style options only found in a traditional word editor (which I personally seldom need).

Reason for choosing Google Docs

Same thing as mentioned before - Microsoft Word is the famous text editor for documenting things but it is not friendly for collaboration at all. Google doc, on the other hand, can be used as personal editing (by setting up auth for others) or can be used as team collaboration text sharing docs.

Great Software!

i loved it! my team was able to have all the necessary files and documents in one place, every time a hardware crashed we didn't have to worry about unsaved changes which was a plus to my time specifically.

PROS

In all honesty , i used this software to write down contract formats, to do lists, and even scripts for my production company and to say the least i am very pleased. The feature i loved most was where you can share files with colleagues and work on the same document at the same time real time.

CONS

i didn't like the fact that you have to request access to a document once it has been submitted or turned in (When documents are assigned) it sort of complicates things.

Google Docs | It's for You

I believe that Google Docs is the best writing software for collaboration, and since it is paired with Google Drive then there's almost no reason to avoid it. It can be shared easily with others, and it doesn't require a lot of knowledge to be affective in using the tool. I've been using it for nearly 10 years, and I've been using it for four years as my primary writing software.

PROS

Google Docs is my preferred writing software. It allows me to easily share, insert other documents, and work with others in real time. It also allows for customization of the pages, inserting of images/charts/tables, and other features which can help customize your document to you. It is a capable writing software, and a solid choice for people just looking to type out a story, work on a school project, or work with friends/colleagues.

CONS

My only complaint about this software is that the top bar (which houses editing, inserting, and various other tools) can feel cluttered. To someone who flips between Word and Docs (or someone who doesn't know what they're looking for), then it will likely take a Google search to figure out where the tool you want is and how to use it properly within Docs.

Reasons for switching to Google Docs

Microsoft Word had a few more features and looked "cleaner" than Drive, but Word was much more difficult to share and collaborate with other people. It seems like Docs was built for single AND collaborative uses. Now that most of my projects require someone else's eyes, it is extremely easy to work with another person compared to Word. Plus, as long as you have a Google account then you can work with the other person.

A student, writer, editor or researcher's dream

PROS

Google Docs is great for writing and collaborating on written projects because it keeps a "Version History" of the document that is easy to access and easy to read. It also shows you in the right margin who has made what changes to the document (so you can easily determine which version you want to see even if you don't remember exactly when). Similar to a "Track Changes" option on Word or Pages, but better, Google Docs offers a "Suggesting Mode" where your changes are visible and can be "accepted" or "rejected." This is ideal for when you want to suggest a change to the text and I use it often when marking or grading students' papers to show them how they might have reworded something, offering suggestions on their drafts, peer-reviewing friends' papers or proposals, and so forth. There is also a comments function, which is again different from what you'd find on Word or Pages because you can see the comments right there on the right margin of the document instead of having to 'click' on the comment to see what it says... The Outline function is extraordinarily useful as well, as it automatically compiles an 'outline' of your paper based on your titles/headers. This is perfect for organizing notes or long documents with multiple sections. Docs is also great for sharing as it allows you to share a file as "View-Only" or editable, and either by email invitation to the file or by distributing the link. There are also tons of add-ons...

CONS

There are no obvious issues with Google Docs, though considering how many people use Docs for writing projects or papers, it would be nice if there were more document types. There are dedicated writing softwares (such as Scrivener) that essentially break down one larger written draft into multiple sections that are compiled into one. It would be good for Docs to consider something along those lines, as I use it religiously for everything from taking meeting minutes to organizing recipes I want to try, but I avoid writing longer documents on Docs because it takes too long to scroll up and down.

Even Better than Microsoft Word

For work purposes, I frequently use Google Docs to create files that I need my employees or colleagues to collaborate on. Everyone can access and edit through a link, even if they don't have a Gmail account to sign into. I often work with faculty to help them set up collaborate documents for class, or to show their students how to use Google Docs and similar Google products for their group work and share with their professor so they can check on their progress as needed. It has eliminated the need to email versions of files back and forth.

PROS

It's always improving, either in response to features that comparable software (MS Word, Open Office) has added or in response to user requests. We asked for columns; they gave it to us. It's quite user-friendly and works well with imports and exports from/to MS Word. This is extremely important to me because I'm a Chromebook user so Google Docs is all my laptop uses but when I download a copy in MS Word to upload assignment submissions for my doctoral courses, it works perfectly. I'm actually doing my entire dissertation in GoogleDocs. I love that you can look up the version history- it makes it easy to find any missing text from an accidental deletion or misedit, and also to track who did what if everyone is signed in with a Gmail account.

CONS

Nothing, really. Even if features don't exist, there's nearly always a free Add-On via the Chrome store. For example, I wanted a quick way to turn text into alternate capitalization types (all lowercase, all uppercase, title case, invert, etc.) I found a quick add-on and I have a short-cut. I've also added add-ons like a more extensive chart builder for in-text charts and tables and a Word Cloud Generator, which not only creates an image but gives me a word count of each word occurrence to help me do text analysis.

Google Docs Rocks!

Overall there have been many benefits to using this program! I am usually connected to the internet so I have no issues with using Google Docs. It makes it easy to save work and send to other employees. I love that I don't have to worry about losing my work, and that it will always be saved.

PROS

Google offers Google Docs as a free version of what is basically Microsoft Word. What I love most about the software is first off, that its free! To me that is a benefit, not having to pay for the software unlike Microsoft Word. Every single file that you make changes to in Docs automatically save to Google Drive every time you make a change, so if your computer for some reason crashes or shuts down, you can pick up exactly where you left off! This makes using Google Docs stress free and you don't have to constantly worry about saving your file or that the latest version of your file isn't saved. Google Drive stores each save as a separate revision, which means if you want to go back to a version you previously made you are able to do so. Google does not count Docs files toward your free space on Drive, so you can keep an unlimited number of documents and revisions - I love this feature!! Unlike Microsoft Word and most other alike software programs, Google Docs runs in a Web browser so you don't need to install software to run the program. Running Docs through the Internet makes it possible to work on any Internet or WIFI connected computer, but this presents a limitation: If you lose your Internet connection, you lose access to the program.

CONS

Like I said previously, Google Docs runs completely from the Internet, which can cause some issues with the availability to access your files, but it also provides a way to save all of your changes so you never lose any of your work! If you are in a pinch and need access to your files and have no way of connecting to the internet it can make the situation stressful - this is my biggest issue with the software.

Google Docs Reviews

For writing reports or making and editing text files with a computer, the first tool that many people think of is Microsoft Word, but in fact, Google Docs is becoming more and more powerful. In addition to online editing, there are many super practical skills that make me more efficient in processing documents. Strongly recommend! 1. Google Docs can select all of the same style text and edit all at once: no longer need to select one by one after changing the format! Sometimes editing the file will require changing the font, color, and size of the title. In Google Docs, you can directly select all the text of the same style. As long as you select the paragraph of text you want to modify and right-click, and then select "Select all matching text", you can select all the text you want to modify at once and edit them directly Color, size and style are convenient and fast. 2. The built-in web search function: you can type and search Google without opening a new window! If you need to query data when editing a document, you usually have to jump to the search tab or window again, but in Google Docs, just select "Tools" in the toolbar above and select "Explore", a small Google search will appear on the right side of the page Engine window, no need to switch to a different window, super convenient!

PROS

The most impressive function is the Multi-person editing chat room: No need to open another line to discuss while changing text. This is the most convenient feature of Google Docs is that you can edit the same document with more than one person at a time. In this case, if you want to discuss or communicate in real-time, you don’t need to open other communication software. There is an instant communication room in Google Docs. The dialog symbol next to the head will open the communication room, making co-editing more efficient!

CONS

Google Docs has the function of automatic archiving in real-time, and it will keep your change history. If you are dealing with long work or report text, sometimes you may need to go back to the previous version to make changes. At this time, just go to the "File" option in the upper toolbar. AT ITS FINEST!!!

What I like best about Google Docs is the straightforwardness part of the product. In particular, I am an extremely huge devotee of the way that the format is exceptionally simple to get a grip of in any event, for the individuals who are simply beginning utilizing the product. The entirety of the apparatuses that might be utilized for the motivation behind altering whatever record is being chipped away at can be effectively found inside the few tabs close to the highest point of the page, in contrast to comparative programming, where finding a quite certain altering device may be a troublesome undertaking. Notwithstanding the effortlessness factor, I am likewise a major advocate of the measure of instruments accessible to the client to take a shot at a record. Specifically, I can say with an essentially enormous measure of certainty that the measure of instruments accessible to the client isn't not exactly the sum that is related with what might be viewed as a more "dazzling" word preparing programming, for example, Microsoft Word. Truth be told, there may be significantly more, which carries me to my last point - the excellent communitarian perspective related with Google Docs. Not at all like other word handling programming, Google Docs consequently spares any progressions you make to the record you are taking a shot at to the Google Cloud, which implies that you don't need to continually spare your archive physically, just like the case with Microsoft Word.

PROS

A portion of the issues that I am explaining with Google Docs incorporate synergistic failures and costs related with colleague travel to chip away at a specific record. As referenced already, this product permits all gathering individuals, expecting they have a Google account, to take a shot at a record progressively without there being any need to head out to a solitary area. This spares everybody both time and cash on movement costs, which is a reality that couldn't be acknowledged with other comparable programming. Google Docs likewise has a talk highlight on the correct side of the page, where you can speak with all the associated bunch individuals through content, should that be the strategy for correspondence that the gathering likes. The advantages that I have acknowledged by utilizing this product are remarkable, as can probably be extrapolated by means of what I have composed hitherto in this survey. Advantages, for example, effectiveness, comfort, and straightforwardness are the best ones that I might want to bring up. I would prescribe it to anybody, as I am certain that it would not frustrate; rather, it would probably dazzle.

CONS

Google Docs likewise permits various clients to alter exactly the same report in a concurrent way from a huge number of gadget types, regardless of whether it be a PC, work area, tablet, or even telephone. Up to an individual has a Google record and they are welcome to alter the archive by the record maker, cooperative collaboration turns out to be proficient and helpful as each colleague can be in their own distant area and work on a similar report progressively. The entirety of this is without referencing that for most clients the administration will be free, (except if you are dealing with an enormous measure of records and you need more distributed storage space, in which case there is a generally little cost to pay).

Keep always track of any changes in your document!

The greatest thing I noticed with my experience of using Google Docs' IMO is its utility. My GMail accounts can be used to share presentations, documents, and spreadsheets. I find that these papers are fantastic because you can share them with anyone who has a Google account, which is nearly everyone in my IT departement. To exchange images and videos, utilize Google Docs. Also several users in my team are allowed to edit data at the same time in one single file that's awesome .

PROS

My document changes are monitored, including time and editor information. You can simply go back to an earlier revision to see who made changes and when! If you don't reboot or restart your computer after spilling coffee on it, or dropping it off a bridge, your data will be protected. Isn't it marvelous to be able to record meetings? Prepare for each meeting with a clear plan, coordinating all activities and keeping track of all debates and decisions. One of the most common starting lines at conferences in any work is "Let's all join in and start a list of comments and questions." All of the team at work can now communicate from anywhere by engaging with their manager and other responsable on screen, working on a shared spreadsheet, and creating slide presentations. A new dynamic with endless opportunities.

CONS

Printing from Google Docs isn't as simple as printing from Microsoft Office. Printing web pages includes document headers and footers. Google Docs offers many formatting options, including page/paragraph indent, sub/superscript, and formatting tools for creating headers and footers. Include URLs and photographs. Making envelopes or labels in Google Docs is pointless. Also, to edit a Google Doc, it must be in that format. Don't send a Word document with fancy formatting! Google must first update their existing publications. You may lose design, fonts, and formatting. These files can be reloaded into Word or Excel, but not exactly.
