Excel, the workhorse you can depend on

Pros:

I've used Excel for over 3 decades, and I started with the predecessor, Lotus 123! Excel is a great spreadsheet app, allowing you to meet all of your business needs, including managing data, creating/embedding graphs, creating macros, report generation and more. It has a ton of features.

Cons:

When you first begin you will find it has a lot of features and the learning curve can be a bit steep, but once you use it for a while it gets intuitive. If you have an older version, you own it and don't have to pay monthly; but the newer versions you are Saas and you have to pay forever, so that's a bummer.

Microsoft Excel Has Been My Go-To Tool for Both My Career and Personal Life

5

Microsoft Excel has supported me through different stages of my life—from preparing for my physiotherapy career in Canada, to managing my work as a physiotherapist, and now helping me keep precious records of my daughter's growth. It is reliable, easy to use, and incredibly versatile. Whether I'm organizing patient information, planning my work, or tracking personal milestones, Excel helps me stay organized and saves me a lot of time. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable spreadsheet and data management tool.

Pros:

As a physiotherapist, Microsoft Excel has become an essential part of my daily work. I use it to keep track of my patient records, including new assessments, follow-up appointments, cancellations, and other work-related data. It helps me stay organized and quickly review information whenever I need it. When I moved from India to Canada to prepare for my physiotherapy licensing exam, Excel was also a big part of my study routine. I used it to organize study schedules, track my progress, and make notes, which helped me stay focused throughout my preparation. Now, I also use Excel in my personal life. I have a two-month-old daughter, and I keep a record of her weekly weight, height, milestones, and important appointment notes. Having everything in one place makes it easy to look back and see how much she has grown. I love how simple it is to organize data, use formulas when needed, and create tables that are easy to read.

Cons:

The only challenge I have found is that some advanced features and formulas take time to learn. Also, when working with very large spreadsheets on a mobile device, editing can sometimes feel less convenient than on a computer. Other than that, I have had a very positive experience.

Still the Undisputed King of Spreadsheets

5

Overall, Excel has been an essential tool for daily work — reliable, powerful, and endlessly flexible for data analysis, reporting, and modeling. Ease of use is excellent for basic tasks and scales well for advanced users willing to invest time in learning. While mobile compatibility and occasional performance hiccups with large files are minor frustrations, the sheer versatility and deep template library make it indispensable. It integrates seamlessly into most workflows and remains hard to replace.

Ratings Breakdown

5

Ease of use

5

5

5

Functionality

Pros:

Excel remains the gold standard for spreadsheet software. The sheer depth of functions and formulas — from basic SUM/VLOOKUP to advanced XLOOKUP, Power Query, and Power Pivot — makes it capable of handling everything from simple budgets to complex financial models. Templates are plentiful and easy to customize, which speeds up getting started on new projects. Navigation is intuitive once you're familiar with ribbons and shortcuts, and keyboard shortcuts make power-user workflows very fast. Integration with the rest of the Microsoft 365 suite (especially Power BI and Teams) is a big plus, and value for money is strong if you're already on a Microsoft 365 subscription since Excel comes bundled in.

Cons:

Performance can lag with very large datasets or heavily formula-laden sheets, sometimes causing freezing or slow recalculation. Mobile device compatibility is decent but noticeably limited compared to the desktop version — complex formulas and pivot tables are clunky to edit on a phone or tablet. Occasional bugs surface after updates, particularly with add-ins or macros breaking unexpectedly. Customer support can be slow for non-enterprise plans, and the learning curve for advanced features (VBA, Power Query) is steep for casual users.

Powerful spreadsheet tools with AI

4

My overall experience with Microsoft Excel has been very positive. It remains one of the most reliable tools for managing data, creating reports, and organizing information. Over the years, Excel has improved with features like real-time collaboration, cloud storage through Microsoft 365, improved templates, and AI-powered assistance. The ability to ask questions about data, generate insights, and get help creating formulas makes Excel more approachable for users who are not spreadsheet experts. Customer support and online resources are also helpful because there is a large community sharing solutions and tutorials. Navigation is generally straightforward, although beginners may need some time to learn where advanced features are located. Excel is not perfect, but its flexibility, powerful features, and continuous improvements make it a valuable tool for personal and professional use.

Ratings Breakdown

5

Ease of use

5

5

5

Functionality

Pros:

What I like most about Microsoft Excel is how powerful it has become while still being familiar and easy to use. The combination of classic spreadsheet tools with newer AI features makes daily work much faster. Features like Copilot help analyze data, create formulas, summarize information, and find patterns without needing to manually build everything from scratch. I also like the large selection of templates for budgets, project tracking, reports, schedules, and business planning. Excel works well for both simple tasks and advanced data analysis using features like PivotTables, charts, Power Query, and automation. The integration with Microsoft 365 makes collaboration easier because multiple people can edit files together and access them from different devices. The mobile version is also useful for quick updates when away from a computer.

Cons:

The biggest downside of Microsoft Excel is that some advanced features can have a steep learning curve, especially for new users. While the interface is familiar, finding specific tools or settings can sometimes take time because there are so many options available. Some AI features and advanced capabilities require a Microsoft 365 subscription, which may feel expensive for casual users who only need basic spreadsheet functions. Large files with many formulas, images, or complex data models can sometimes become slow. I have also experienced occasional compatibility issues when sharing files between different Excel versions or with users using other spreadsheet programs. The mobile experience is good for viewing and simple edits, but it does not provide the same full functionality as the desktop version.
