Parallax has changed our agency!

PROS

What I love is that it integrates our data so seamlessly between HubSpot and Harvest. It's a tool that removed quite a bit of manual work across spreadsheets to make our resourcing and forecasting far more powerful and reliable.

CONS

There's nothing that I dislike about Parallax, there are the usual feature requests with any platform you have where you say, "oh if this just did this" but, they are really amazing at receiving feedback from their users and asking questions and evolving the platform as they grow which is awesome to see!

Reason for choosing Parallax

It integrated so seamlessly with existing platforms we had and we believe in what [sensitive content hidden] are creating and growing!

An indispensable tool for Operations

Learning curve was steep and onboarding effort was high but the outcome has been worth it. We've realized real gains in utilization (and subsequently revenue), it's given the operations team peace of mind that we've got enough people to do the work (even in the pipeline) and it's given leadership insight that we've never had.

PROS

Parallax provides insight into past, present and FUTURE utilization, revenue, and project risk that we've never had before. We make better decisions and are more informed than we've ever been as an organization in those areas.

CONS

It is a complex tool that the extremely-well-versed PX team has built to address most of the nuances of agency resourcing and billing. As a result the - the effort (both rote and complex) to get projects and employees set up is substantial the larger the agency (we're 70 people and about as many ongoing projects) - the learning curve to set it up RIGHT is steep, so there will inevitably be some trial and error to get it set up to work best with your organization. Short version, it was 10 months after kickoff before I got complete data out that I trusted.

Reason for choosing Parallax

It came down to doing things the way we had been, which was better than nothing but not a step forward, or completely changing out our broader infrastructure (ticketing, task management, time tracking) for a more all-in-one tool. Ultimately PX's approach of "keep using the tools you like and PX will fill the gap better than an All in one" won out.

Reasons for switching to Parallax

PX promised a robust tool that would give us 500% more data and insight for only 50% more effort.

A great idea

The Parallax team is really nice, and I'm rooting for them! I think that in order to be more useful, we could use better communication around release notes (or some expectations about when/what type of communication we can expect). Sometimes I crack it open and there are new features that I find myself needing to learn on the fly. Cool to have new features (and mostly I really can figure them out) but some closing of those loops would be helpful.

PROS

I'd say that what Parallax is trying to tackle is nothing short of heroic. In the studio/agency space, we're all trying to figure out what capacity we're operating at, and how to ensure teams are resourced, happy, motivated – and that our projects are making money. Parallax tries to take all of this on and provide smart reporting. The promise of all of this was definitely what drew our team to this software. I've also personally enjoyed being involved in the product testing/roadmapping process. I feel like a lot of the suggestions my team has made along the way have been implemented or considered.

CONS

Parallax is still starting out. So over the months there have been a lot of growing pains that we've needed to contend with – mostly in the form of workarounds. This has made things like reporting still need to happen – for us anyway – outside of the tool. My other issue with Parallax is how much it relies on getting everyone's allocation exactly right to be truly useful. This is nearly impossible to manage with the normal ups and downs of business, and when you figure in non-billable time like vacations, internal projects, and sick time things get squirrelly quick.

Parallax enables us to manage our present and plan for our future

Parallax has been an invaluable tool as we've scaled our software consulting business and team to over 65 employees. As Head of Delivery, I use Parallax on a daily basis to review project assignments, evaluate staffing decisions, and analyze capacity & utilization. The product team at Parallax is very engaged with their users and we have seen many new and useful features added to the product after the past year. Early on in our usage of the product we focused on making sure our data in Parallax was a 'source of truth' for the business but now, with the new tools and reports available, we are able to be more proactive in capacity planning and hiring.

PROS

What makes Parallax so powerful is the breadth and depth of views and reports that are available to you as a user. I can easily view projects and people in parallel or quickly pivot to dive into a single project. There are also reports for digging into utilization, capacity, and hiring forecasts that enable many different ways to slice the data. Parallax does a great job of enabling filtering and searching through many dimensions on all pages and reports so that it can handle the high variety of use cases that are involved with project and staffing management.

CONS

There is a learning curve to the terminology used in the various reports and dashboards. As someone who was new to many of the concepts, I had to frequently remind myself how to interpret the results of a report and which fields were the most relevant to my query. Because the reports and dashboards aren't entirely intuitive to a new user, this has also been a challenge to scaling use of the product across our organization. That said, once we gained some in-house experts on the software, it became much easier to train people and drive adoption.

Reasons for switching to Parallax

Forecast had useful tools for tracking project assignments but it didn't serve our needs for capacity analysis, pipeline projects, and hiring forecasts. Parallax is a great 'source of truth' and is highly configurable to our required use cases.

Powerhouse PSA Tool

Our problem was that we had lots of different softwares that gave us information that could useful, but no way to congregate the data into one place that could synthesize it and help us make decisions. Previously we used a spreadsheet to track our team's allocation and Parallax's resource allocation has been a game changer. We now are able to see who needs work or is overworked and what projects are coming down the pipeline very easily to make sure we remain well staffed and our team is allocated properly.

PROS

The features in Parallax that are the most impactful were how the product seamless integrates all of our systems into a viewpoint that allows us to leverage that data to make decisions. It allowed us to use our sales pipeline, current active projects, and staff to plan and forecast efficiently. We also really enjoyed working with the team at Parallax. They were consistent, knowledgeable and incredibly easy to work with.

CONS

Integration with Parallax was very seamless. One thing that we would like to see is the ability to add notes or comments on items throughout Parallax. Sometimes it is helpful to add quick comments or notes to projects or the sales pipeline to keep track of things that were discussed in and out of meetings.

Reason for choosing Parallax

Pricing and the connection with the Parallax team. We did not find the same commitment to our success or the level of responsiveness from other teams.

Reasons for switching to Parallax

We chose Parallax because of their team. It felt like they were invested in our success and we really enjoyed working with them. The product also gave us everything that we needed and more to grow and succeed.

Review

Really happy with the support we get onboarding. It's a big piece of software and I like that you didn't just sell us a license and then let us figure it all out.

PROS

I like finally being able to see all current and prospective projects in one place, loaded onto the team

CONS

There's still some clunkiness to the interface. For example, I keep it open in a tab at all times, but I typically have to reload the page when I move away from it, sometimes with a notification that the application needs to be refreshed, but sometimes when it just stops displaying data. The reports are also almost TOO robust to be usable. Not sure how to improve them, I just know that we spend a lot of time tinkering with how to make them readable and useful for our purposes. Particular pain point for me is how to "monte carlo" our existing jobs in the pipeline to determine most likely and least likely scenarios for certain jobs coming in. There may be a way to do it, but not sure if I can figure it out easily.

Not intuitive but critical for resource management

Overall, it's an improvement over Forecast (our previous tool), but performance and ease of use are somewhat prohibitive to rolling this out to the rest of the team for heavier adoption. Despite having so many users, only a few of the people on the team have been able to really use the tools effectively without intensive onboarding.

PROS

Primarily use this for resource management and to solve open resource needs.

CONS

Often very very slow when looking at large projects or large team views. Some quirks with timeline view. Wish you could add notes for open resources or formalize resource requests in more meaningful ways. Often defaults to views based on quarter and I have to repeat efforts to set my filters. When the team and project sizes get larger, this becomes a problem.

Great product that is maturing rapidly

I have appreciated the tight integration between the Parallax team and mine. Their support and onboarding process was extremely helpful in getting us to extract the most value from the Parallax product.

PROS

Parallax is a great tool for facilitating team discussions and company planning. The insights it provides across the company are critical to our decision making processes.

CONS

When diving into multiple projects it can be laborious to switch focus to a new project and set the context I need in specific views.

Tough Ramp-up but Already Seeing Benefits

I can already see the benefits of adding the Parallax system to our team. It will be very impactful for quick reporting and real-time data. The ramp-up to get the data in was really rough and my expectation was there would be a dedicated team on the Parallax side to help make the ramp-up easier. There was high-level guidance provided but not many proactive "best practices" based on AG's contracts until I brought them to meetings. Have a more standard approach to evaluating company's contracts and how you can easily add them to Parallax would help go-forward

PROS

Seeing my staff in one place and tracking their expected hours vs. what is happening real time is very impactful. There are also some savvy reports that we are just starting to dive into which will be instrumental to our organization.

CONS

Ramp-up was a little tough as the system isn't the easiest to get used to but once I got a hang of it I was flowing through it with ease. The software links Havest hours but my company bills from Harvest and I would like like to see our actual billed revenue vs what we were planning to bill since the data is all there. There are a lot of times where there are bugs which prevents me from making progress on updating the software. Also, it is tedious to update "dates" in Parallax since you have to click through a calendar to choose. Adding hours allocation is also difficult since we typically do not plan daily and a feature where I can add hours daily, weekly or monthly would have made the ramp-up a lot faster

Parallax Visualizes the Data You Need

Fantastic, and I highly recommend the Parallax tool. The customer success team is simply fantastic, and the team as a whole is very responsive. I've enjoyed working with them and getting to be a part of their growth as an organization.

PROS

The ability to visualize people's time and capacity helps immensely when planning for incoming projects. Allowing us to understand what additional capacity exists and what those skillsets are for those individuals. Outside of that, it helps to provide forecasted financial data based on the projects themselves. This is helpful when working in a T&M business.

CONS

There are certain features it would benefit from having, and some of those, at least for our use case, is being built out over the next two quarters. It is not always the most intuitive UI to work with, but again, the product and company are young and as they grow, so does the product/experience (for the better).

Big Parallax fan!

PROS

Parallax is a much more robust tool than our organization has ever worked with. I love having insight into the sales pipeline, project profitability across active work, and resourcing and utilization management all in one place. These things were all being managed in disparate places prior to onboarding to Parallax and it was not as easy to get a full view of our state of affairs. We also did not previously have project financials surfaced to the delivery team (accounts and PMs), and this has allowed us to really hone our focus on project profitability in the last year or two.

CONS

If you are not a daily user, I think Parallax is less intuitive than it could be. I know there are team members of mine who are critical users of Parallax in order for our data to be accurate, but they are not in the tool daily and therefore do not always remember all of the intricacies or nuances necessary to get the job done.A recent update to capacity displays has made it less easy to see an employee's weekly billable capacity, and that's a data point our project planners use on a daily basis. They definitely miss the ease of having that number next to the employee's name!

Parallax has been a game-changer for our digital agency!

Parallax has been a game-changer for our digital agency! Prior to Parallax, we were relying on manual spreadsheets to track our project health and budgets. As our agency scales, we had to replace our process with a more automated solution and the move to Parallax has been invaluable.

PROS

Great resource management and forecasting tool. Our favorite feature is seeing the impact of adjusting your forecasting and how it affects the project margin. The Insights data reports have been super helpful in viewing our agency's capacity and understanding our resourcing needs. In addition, their customer success team is amazing and has helped guide us (and still is!) every step of the way.

CONS

With Parallax being pretty new, there are a few glitches and bugs we've encountered, but the Parallax team has been pretty good about helping resolve those issues quickly. Their dashboard could be more intuitive as well, but as you use the tool regularly it gets easier to navigate. Also wish there was a note section to document things throughout the project.

Parallax Streamlines our Resource Planning & Improves our Planning Forecasts

Parallax is the unicorn of a software our team's been searching for and they have a great team behind a great product.

Parallax has been a game changer for our org. The benefits are innumerable, but the following are big wins for us.-- Automation: we're saving hours of time each month in resource planning, financial reporting, and forecasting-- Integrations: we were happy to find a solution that integrates with the tools our team currently uses -- Reports: we love having access to real-time reports to make hiring decisions and conduct resource planning meetings-- Feature updates: the Parallax team is always improving the tool and looking to incorporate new features -- Great support: the Parallax support team is prompt, available, and ready to help-- Receptive to feedback: the Parallax team welcomes feedback and is genuinely looking for ways to improve their product and customer experience

If our team started the software assessment and selection process over, we would select Parallax again. The challenges we've had with the software are minor in the grand scheme of things, however, they are essential to note if you are in the market! -- Implementation was a big push: [sensitive content hidden] and the team were very supportive and helpful in getting us on board. Delivers Business Insight

Long onboarding that is totally paying off on a daily basis after getting it fully integrated.

PROS

Parallax touches every aspect of our business in a meaningful way, so it's very difficult to what I like most, so broadly speaking, I like most that it operates as a hub of information for all teams to feel empowered to drive progress and make insightful data-driven decisions - whether that's departments, client teams, or even individuals figuring out their own resourcing expectations for the week. It drives so much forward.

CONS

In order for Parallax to meaningfully impact the entire business, it takes a large effort to onboard, build habits, train employees, create new operating rhythms, determine decision-making rights, etc... The juice is worth the squeeze, but you might be really disappointed if you don't identify multiple stakeholders and a good deal of time to work on implementing the tool and operationalizing it withing your organization.

Helping us scale

Parallax has helped us cope with a significantly increased workload without performance slowdowns or getting caught flat-footed. It's improved our visibility into the sales pipeline for talent planning purposes. PROS

Parallax has helped us break away from spreadsheet -based talent planning. It's more stable and reliable than our prior approach and promises to support us well as we grow.

CONS

There's a significant learning curve for both implementation and daily use. You should plan for a multi-month transition with a dedicated owner to manage the process and be a point person for issue resolution. Ensure your company scopes and sells work in units that align well with Parallax's approach. If not, you may have to change your approach or find many workarounds.

Solid, but a work in progress with excellent customer support.

PROS

Ability to forecast revenue, the impact of our sales pipeline, and team availability.

CONS

Navigation can sometimes be confusing. There are many layers to navigation, and they sometimes aren't visible until you've clicked through a layer or two. (Example 1: Main nav/sidebar doesn't show second-level options until you've click on the top level—likely a bug. Example 2: Each of the following drill-downs/options is a click or interface: Insights > Revenue > Forecast > Next > Quarter. This has to be re-navigated every time you leave that specific page/setting.) This is made more complicated because URLs can't be bookmarked or copy/pasted to coworkers. The URLs change periodically, which makes them useless to bookmark. The URLs don't capture the state of the interface you're looking at (different insight views, date ranges, etc.), making them useless to bookmark and copy/paste to other people.

Reasons for switching to Parallax

No longer wanted to maintain a homegrown solution.

Indispensable Software for Services Firms

This is game changing software. The team is amazing, the software is amazing, I literally can't recommend this enough. This is head and shoulders about its competition.

PROS

Parallax provides top to bottom management of our firm, from integrating with early stage sales, through project & resource management, to financials and project / service ROI and revenue recognition.

CONS

I love everything about this software, but it would be great to see even further customization around revenue and forecasting, like being able to put in custom close rates and do more forecasting outside of our sales tool.

Reason for choosing Parallax

Parallax provided a comprehensive solution that replaced a bunch of other tools and spreadsheets we'd cobbled together or looked at. The Parallax team deeply understands the resourcing challenges a services firm has, in ways that other tools either ignore or get wrong.

Parallax

Overall, Parallax has been extremely helpful for us. The tool is easy to use and update, and the team is very responsive and helpful in solving for our resource planning and project planning needs.

PROS

The Parallax tool is critical for our team to track assignments and work across 500 people and 60+ clients. It's easy to use, and they have made a lot of recent updates to improve functionality and UI. The Parallax team is also very responsive and helpful when issues arise, and addresses our questions and concerns quickly and effectively.

CONS

We'd like to see Parallax connect better with our workforce management tool, and also allow for exporting and sharing data more easily in excel.

A helpful project that could be even better

PROS

Parallax has been very helpful in terms of helping us keep track of estimated hours for projects and resource allocation and planning. The visual display is very clear and makes it easy to see at a glance when someone is over/under utilized. It is easy to add to people to teams and managing projects is overall mostly clear and understandable.

CONS

Some elements of the platform could be additionally more user-friendly. One big need is the ability to change someone's hours when using the Assignments view. We often look at the assignments view as a group, and needing to go back into individual projects to make changes is a big hassle, often requiring multiple tabs/screens.

Parallax helps us plan!

PROS

Parallax has given our organization a more holistic, longer-term visual representation of our bandwidth as a team. It also provides us with the flexibility to adjust team assignments on the fly and provide visibility to the whole team.

CONS

At times the project shaping tool can be clunky, especially when making weekly allocation adjustments.

Digital Agency - Parallax Review

Parallax both as an organization and as a tool has been great to work with. The support staff is friendly and helpful and the tool fills a definite need within our organization.

PROS

Parallax fills a need in a simple and intuitive way that had been missing within our organization for many years. Through having the ability to easily plan and organize around project timelines, budgets, and resources it has cut our planning efforts by two thirds and has allowed us to view planned against actual resourcing in ways that we did not previously have access to.

CONS

The only down side that I run across from time to time is that editing planned hours within the grid can be a little slow and buggy when the tool is attempting to auto-save.

Professional Services experience

We went live very quickly and on time. We had good integration with Hubspot and Harvest. Customer service has been great and Product Management attentive.

PROS

Helps our company forecast resource needs as well as measure key operating KPIs - FTEs, Yields, Rates.

CONS

Not something I don't like, but there are more features I would like including backlog measurement across the company, integration of materials costs and price, as well as more flexibility during the execution of contracts.
