About Pivotal Tracker

Pivotal Tracker from Pivotal is a cloud-based agile project management solution designed to facilitate collaboration between teams and monitor progress throughout the entire project lifecycle. The solution allows team members involved in a project to list down actionable items, assign activities, prioritize tasks, and set deadlines.

Pivotal Tracker automatically calculates the estimated time required to complete a single task or the entire project based on the past efficiency of the team. This allows managers to have fine delivery estimates for all projects that can be configured based on real-time circumstances and workforce availability. The solution offers a guided iteration-planning tool that helps users to prioritize project activities and break down tasks into a number of manageable chunks.

Pivotal Tracker offers a shared calendar that displays daily assignment, project status and future availability of resources. Designed primarily for software developers, Pivotal Tracker can also be used across other industries irrespective of size and vertical for managing project life cycle.

I have started to use pivotal tracker to manage the project I work on. It really help me to follow agile process and complete the project within the deadline. Easy to adopt and learn for beginners as well. Adding images to the task is really helpful. Strong integration to downstream apps.

Potential, but difficult to navigate

It was alright, but I think it's due for a series UI refresh. It has advanced tools that are great to have, but hard to discover and hard to use.

Pros:
I liked the single view of all the different project boards within one screen. Made it easier in terms of viewing the tasks that were associated with the different platforms we were dealing with. Also just being able to see a breakdown of the different types of tickets created regardless of whether it was a story of a bug was in one compiled view.
Cons:
It was hard to navigate at times, especially when you've reached a point in which each panel had a lot of items added. The viewer becomes overwhelming and there was definitely a steep learning curve to get it up and running and get comfortable with it. I don't know if it was worth educating myself on how to use the interface when even after adding items and trying to manage them, it still felt like I had to keep learning.

Proper SCRUM tool

I've been using PT since many years without a problem. It's so simple to use that there is basically no learning curve, while actually everyone on the team can do his job effectively and it's also so simple to track the progress of the project.

Actually nothing, except that sometimes simplicity comes with a cost.

From a developer standpoint, it's straightforward.

This is preferable to merely listing what you are working on in a dev environment, though it's not as in-depth as jira.

Pros:
I enjoy very much the ability to clearly list what may be blocking my progress, as well as being able to clearly list out the stages of any project that I'm working on.
Cons:
I've found the marking of projects as started, finished, and accepted to be unclear. The menus are not as easily understood when getting past the basics of starting and ending a project.

Pros:
One thing that makes me choose pivotal over other software development tools is that it's quite easy to use and understand as a developer. It's convenient to compartmentalize the tasks according to the iterations - current/backlog or icebox.
Cons:
What I like least about this software is that it doesn't provide time tracking functionality for the stories created.
