Slack Software

Slack is a web-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Better personal preferences. Ability to share stuff between channels.

Pros

Its ease of use for productivity in each channel and direct messages. Features of data sharing all in one.

Cons

Some user preferences could be better. There are certain restrictions that could use more options for one to use.

Pros

It is very easy to set up and use. The desktop alerts are very nice to have so you know when you get a message. It's nice that you can create your own personal channels.

Cons

The program can use a little help with its appearance. It looks a bit "old school" with no lively colors.

Interface and notification style could be improved.

Pros

Interface is very user friendly. Simple to use, share documents across teams. The idea of having multiple sign ons helps to access information from the same portal

Cons

The screen towards the right is a bit annoying. It does not let us see the user details but opens the last pop up. Sometimes this confuses the user to send messages to unintended receivers

I used Slack for about 2 years now and all I have to say is that SLack helps me a lot due to reminders and all other integrations had on it.

Pros

It delivers a great experience overall. It is simple but can deliver great functionalities with bots usage.
May become the perfect solutions for your team and have integrations with almost anything.
The web version on the desktop is very reliable.

Cons

They also have apps for the phone , they always were laggy and had problems of functionalities.
Would be nice to solve some of these problems.

A New Way to Communicate

I started using Slack at my job, because my company wanted a more stable messaging platform. But it wound up working so well that I introduced it to my friend group, and it's pretty much replaced texting for us. So yes, I think it's safe to say I would recommend this product to people I know!

Pros

Easy to use
Reliable (my company's previous text-based communication channel lost connectivity for 1-4 hours at a time, 1-2 times per week)
Tons of add-ons (including relatively easy-to-build custom ones)
Text formatting

Cons

Unless you pay, only a certain amount of conversation is saved (as you write more, your older conversations are deleted)

It's a great tool with a good UI and mobile app utilization. Notifications are tricky to get at times! Great product overall.

Some folks get carried away with all the different channels to create, and sometimes duplicate similar ones. It can also be a major work distraction because it's so fun! Moderation is key.

Pros

Ease of use, helpful features, fun features for gifs and emojis along with attachments and integrations with other tools.

A great source for team management and tomfoolery

Ease-of-use

Pros

Slack has two excellent upsides: easy organization of information, and plenty of user control. Keeping conversations in separate channels keeps information easily accessible (even retroactively, for users added to the channel later,) but doesn't overwhelm everyone with information not pertinent to them. The options allow extremely precise handling of notifications on a channel by channel basis, which means you can personalize it just the way you'd like.

Cons

When creating a new channel, everyone invited to the channel is automatically set up to get mobile notifications for every new post. If someone sets up a new channel and jumps right into a conversation, you'd better get ready for a deluge of notifications (along with the appropriate sounds and/or buzzes) that will almost instantly drive you nuts.

Pros

Streamlines communication for our team members. It allows us to separate our conversation topics. The separation of the topics helped us organize our thoughts and strategies into a system where we could optimally tackle problems. The apps that you can integrate help facilitate a lot. Also, even little silly things like custom emojis and custom commands make the environment much more enjoyable than a standard email or messaging app.

I also wonder if there could be a read option installed. So you can see when your slack message has been seen by the recipient. Otherwise, I really enjoy the application and use is daily.

Pros

What I like most about this product is the convenience factor. I use the software for work to communicate with co-workers, send messages, links, documents. Everything is received immediately and the history is always there for reference. It makes it extremely easy to communicate and makes me hate email. (Too slow. :)) It also has a mobile app so you can stay connected even when you are not at a computer.

Cons

I would say what I like least is the signing on / logging into your team process. If I do get logged out, I have to go through this process of entering my team or slack URL, putting in my email, and sometimes when setting up new employees on the system, it can be a pain. Just not as efficient as the rest of the system.

Slack for the win

Slack is the best. It totally changed the way our company communicates. I would recommend it to anyone.

Pros

I love Slack! It is our primary form of communication in our office. It's significantly cut down on the amount of emails we send, and the channels make it so easy to categorize things. I saw a dramatic difference in the morale and cohesiveness of our team as well. The giphy extension is fun, and the lunch train is useful for us too. They're constantly adding new features. We use it for our HQ team, but also to connect 22 locations across the country. I don't know how we ever operated without it.

Cons

I honestly can't think of anything. It does only store 10,000 messages at a time, and we send a lot of messages so that's a bummer. But it's free so we can't complain about it.

Pros

This is one of the best, if not the best instant messenger around. We use this on a daily basis to chat and send files, it's so easy to use and my favorite is the group messaging, you can set it up to notify you when your name or key words that you choose are used.

Cons

There is a limit to the amount of storage space, which makes me go through and delete memes, pictures, and files that I send(I believe you can get more space with a paid subscription).

My small team had tried tools like Asana, but couldn't by force or threats or shame get them to reliably use it. These ended up just being burdens and causing resentment among those who did use it. I was reluctant to add a new tool, but soon Slack because the end all be all.

Pros

Easy to use, customizeable, and smooth. Most importantly, the barrier to use is very very small. Our team went from 0 to 60 in a couple weeks, and before long they were using it for everything. In it 24 hours, using all the custom emojis, using it for personal ... etc. Slack became a verb very quickly.

Cons

The paid plan price is insane. Thankfully the free plan has plenty of features, so it's not a problem, but I was ready to shout "shut up and take my money" to Slack, until I found out the cost, which seems to be available only to major companies.

Pros

Slack bots are in my opinion one of the most important features of Slack. The integrations with other software tools are absolutely essential for companies that utilize a long list of software services. Not only that, but these bots are bound only by the creativity of the marketplace, and any company can build their own bot that adds more features/integrations to Slack.

Cons

The lack of customization options is rather disappointing. You are free to select from a list of themes or build your own, but the themes only cover a small fraction of the UI. It would be very nice and relatively simple to be able to customize Slack's UI the same way one can customize a code editor such as Atom or Sublime.

Cons

Not much to dislike. Haven't had to try customer support. Like all services that you invite users to join, there are always a few people who find that difficult. Some of that related to initial setup. You can restrict membership to your domain, which is not your slack account. So if you have a widespread group not all belonging to the same web domain, be sure to leave that unchecked.

On the surface, Slack's value proposition is hard to identify. It's basically just IRC with rich snippets and third-party integration. But somehow, the people behind Slack have managed to create something that's just all around a pleasure to use. It's hard to qualify, and its feature list certainly doesn't communicate what its real value is. It fosters team camaraderie in so many small ways (for instance, the out-of-the-box, general and random channels say to you, "hey, we know you're here to get work done, but don't forget to connect with your co-workers and have some fun too.") And it makes it stupidly easy to bring your whole company's communication operations under one umbrella. Calendars, e-mails, dev ops, to-dos, reminders, documentation, files, etc, etc, etc.

The one thing that worries me (and it really does worry me) is that, as a for-profit company that manages our chat logs for us, we are totally beholden to them. They make it so easy and valuable to use them for everything that they quickly become indispensable, and that puts us in a vulnerable position.

Pros

Simplicity, third-party integrations, and the company's cultural focus on creating a human-friendly experience.

Cons

Ultimately it's a closed-source for-pay service that keeps some of our most valuable data our communications on machines that are outside of control. That scares me.

Easy access to co-workers without having to meet face to face, or picking up the phone or sending e-mails.

Pros

It's quick and easy. Instead of sending two dozen e-mails, #slack allows for quick instant messaging capabilities amongst our staff. It's made support really easy, as we can use #slack to triage incoming support calls.

Cons

The Windows app is a little intrusive, but you can silence it. The problem I run into is that many times, I forget that I've silenced the notifications and I end up missing stuff.
