Slack is a cloud-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Keeps your inbox a bit lighter

Pros

Great for small conversations back and forth that doesn't need to go on email. Easy to share files and for just fun banter with the other people in the office.

Cons

The limit on storage is a bit hard, as I've had files shared with me over slack but then it disappears after a while.

The new way to communicate

Pros

Slack is so easy and intuitive, it allows the community to get together, but when you need some private time is possible. I love slack and I never miss a conversation because the conversation with this tools gets easier and organized.

Cons

So far I don't have any. I'm happy with everything

Couldn't do without it

For the most part I love Slack. It's great for remote teams and group chat and keeping threads organized. Much better than email for sure. There are a few bugs that I mentioned above that get in the way of it being a 100% solid product, but it does make communication at work a lot more efficient.

Pros

- Multiple threads in each channel
- Available on desktop and mobile

Cons

- Some alerts never fire. Some direct messages never send me alerts to my phone, as well as channels that I've configured to always send me alerts
- Sometimes the mobile and desktop go out of sync and I have to refresh the desktop or restart the app
- I have a channel that's stuck with a "!" icon on my phone that I can't get to correctly sync up no matter what I try (short of reinstalling the app from scratch, perhaps)
- No color themes (dark mode!)

Slack Review

Very positive experience!! Slack has nice clear interfaces for sending IM. It also very easy to send picture attachments along with the messages.

Pros

Very intuitive and easy to navigate. Great visual interface.

Cons

Sometimes it is challenging to pull up the user with whom you are trying to communicate with unless it is a frequently used account.

A great way for your team to communicate

Pros

It's a great communication tool with plenty of internal apps to help customize your experience.

Cons

This app can feel overwhelming at first. There's a lot of apps and it might take some time to figure out which ones are right for you.

Great Solution for the weekly staff meeting

Pros

I like that it allows me to easily coordinate staff meetings with my coaches. We can lookover the upcoming workouts for the week, discuss upcoming events and expectations for the week.

Cons

I think it could still be more engaging. A few of them are pretty passive and I think that the reason is that the channels thing is just a tad too easy to hide behind.

Very useful collaboration platform for our company

Pros

- High level of user customization features
- Can upload and store files for each channel, with a considerable amount of storage for each person
- Notifications/layout/themes can be modified for each individual user

Cons

- It's expensive, especially if you need some of the features contained within the Standard or Plus subscriptions. This is hard to overcome for small businesses, and may be more palatable with perpetual licensing.

Super helpful to stay updated

Pros

I use it with the volunteers for the robotics team that I run, it works great to not have to send emails all of them time and still be able to update each other on what we are working on!

Cons

If you don’t have the app you don’t get notifications of new conversation if it hasn’t been used in a while

Great tool for collaboration.

Having the application on my desktop, laptop, iOS, and web log-in at once make it quite easy. This is an application designed for team collaborations and communication, and it works quite well.

Pros

Really easy to use, makes communication across various teams and team members easy. There's fun add on features and integration with things like Giphy. Tons of other tools as well, I haven't fully explored whats available but it seams great.

Cons

Organization is tricky. Sometimes I have information spread across multiple chats and details are lost.

Great communication tool to work with

I have used many communication tools like Slack with many different companies. This tool is great because it connects with other software and calendars easily. It makes my day-to-day easier.

Pros

I use slack for communication internally and with my agencies. This is a great tool for that. Instead of emailing back and forth, Slack makes it easy to get real time answers when things become urgent.

Cons

Honestly nothing I can think of that is negative. I wish the free version had a longer chat history! That's it.

Turns everyday conversations into a valuable repository of knowledge

Pros

- Makes us much more productive by not having to deal with chain emails in the inbox
- I can decide which channel to follow and get notifications on, allowing me to be more selective with distractions
- I can search all conversations to see if a question I have has already been answered in the past

Cons

- Almost nothing to not like. It can get distracting when you have channels where people make a bunch of comments that are not work related.

Easy to Use, Lots of Features

Pros

Slack is an excellent platform with a wide variety of features. In my experience, the "channels" have been an highly effective way of communicating with subsets of a team compared to email blasts. The software is also compatible across desktop and mobile devices and the user experience has always been smooth and bug-free. Finally, the open API for developers and the app market have given rise to some excellent Slack integrations with other productivity platforms such as Google Docs. Would definitely recommend for a team of any size.

Cons

Though it is an excellent communication tool, the aesthetic of Slack could look more professional. The bright colours, use of "hashtags", and overall whimsical approach to design is very fun and great for certain teams or industries, however Slack should provide the option to use a more professional "skin" for industries where the bright and whimsical design features would not be taken seriously.

Easy communication with Co-workers

The main use of slack is to better communicate with employees, and it makes work processes easy.

Pros

Slack is a great communication tool in the work place. You can create open and private channels for certain business groups.

Cons

Cons are not with the program, but more with employees misusing it...to much giphy.

Great for our office

Overall, we're all very happy we found a better alternative to what we were using before.

Pros

My boss was obsessed with AIM for decades. That was the only for of communication in our office. Then, Aol decided to discontinue AIM and my boss was at a loss. We then discovered Slack and everything was back to normal and was even better than before. The great thing about Slack is that we can have group channels and we can all discuss work as a group rather than emailing out plans to everyone individually. I believe AIM had group chatting as well but we never utilized it. It was so much easier to do with Slack. It just has a better feel and cleaner and more user friendly than what we were using before.

Cons

The updates on Slack are slightly obnoxious. On some days, I have to very quickly get a message out to my boss and when I open Slack, it tells me that there's a new version and I have to update it first before I can use it. That puts me at a great disadvantage because I then have to run to my boss to let him know what's going on and then run back to tell the person asking for information what my boss said. It doesn't seem like a big deal but when people need to get information very quickly in a big office space, it's a big inconvenience.

I use this app for church related communication on a weekly basis.

Pros

Allows for specific items/topics to be stored in one location on my phone with a singular purpose. I am able to save conversations, share files, pictures, plan events, create teams and maximize communication.

Cons

I wish there were a capability like a Google Drive or Dropbox to store all files related to specific projects or discussions rather than having to go to another location to access documents.
