Slack Software

Slack is a web-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

Pros

My team loves using slack for much more than chatting online. We share links, documents, code script, and updates on projects. We have also moved our weekly meetings to virtual chat rooms in order to touch base on team projects. This has been so helpful in clearing space on our calendar and leaving me more time to do my job.

Cons

There is so much functionality to the tool and they dont often communicate the many capabilities of the tool. I would love to be able to take a quiz and name all of our technology when we sign up and see the options for plug-ins or see examples of use cases.

I suggest setting up Key Words, toying with the numerous (highly functional) 3rd party applications that can be integrated and keep the number of channels you're using down to a minimum.

Pros

Within minutes of being inside Slack you're familiar with how to use the tool. It feels second nature, including many features and functionality already familiar with us from using other applications. Awesome communication tool to work faster and smarter rather than waiting for traditional email responses which can often times take days.

Cons

The nature of using Slack is that everything moves very quickly, if you don't have set rules and guidelines for when (and when not) to use Slack, it can become a cluttered mess to catch up on.

Overall good app and easy for team members to quickly download and be on the same page.

Pros

- It allows for a simple messaging platform between group members
- Very clean looking chat
- Ease of use for navigating the app's features
- Many different apps to choose from and add to integrate into this software.

Cons

- Limited to the apps provided by Slack, so if you want others they are not available.
- If a user just downloads the app, it can be hard to understand what the features are at the start (this can be solved quickly)

Improve Communication & Collaboration with Slack

Ease-of-use

Pros

Slack is a multi-faceted, channel based communication tool that can bring any team together. I've used Slack for graduate classes, interoffice communication, and professional associations. Scheduling, file-sharing, web conferences, internal and external users, and third party integrations are staples of Slack use. The immediacy of the communication fossilizes email communication while the robust search features make inbox folders of Outlook a thing of the past. This tool can centralize communication to topics, projects, roadmaps, or anything you can imagine alongside personal communications and team conversations. I love using this product on desktop, mobile, or tablet uses.

Cons

I can say after evaluating competitors and using Slack for nearly three years that I do not have any complaint with the product that would make me turn to another. I will say that competitors are coming up with comparable products that are within organizational structures (e.g. Microsoft Teams is accessible to all Office 365 users), but that still does not usurp Slack's functionality.

In general, very useful software.

Pros

If you are online, the app will send you an email about missed notifications. Easy to manager multiple channels and groups of people. You can pin items to channels or direct messages.

Cons

Sometimes my phone will receive a notification about a message, but i'm at my computer and may miss it. So across multiple devices usually only one will send you a notification.

Slack is secured so you dont end up with the "hey do you want to see my photos" skype message during a business meeting. It also has a wide array of integrations so I can get access to data inside of the messing app.

To be fair, I probably haven’t spent as much time with Slack as I should in order to formulate a more well thought out opinion or to give it more of a chance, BUT I still think it doesn’t live up to the hype.

Pros

Slack offers threaded conversations and the ability to invite outside users to a channel, which is perhaps the biggest advantage to this startup messaging app. It’s geared toward improving productivity within businesses and offers some interesting functionality to that end.

Cons

While it is a functional offering, Slack’s interface is overwhelming in my opinion, with hash tagged channels (#softwareadvice, #internalteam, etc) that just feel like one big group text. I have tried it multiple times, and I just don’t get the hype. I also had some difficulty accessing multiple channels from my one account, but I’m not sure if that’s just a me thing or not.

Pros

The flexibility and ease of use is really powerful. We have spun up hundreds of channels for groups large and small. From a company communications perspective, it's been a great way to get announcements out to employees (i.e. meet them where they are, cut down on email).

Cons

The volume of communication can be overwhelming. Finding the right balance of which channels to engage with and how much to engage with them takes a bit of effort. It is also somewhat hard to monitor from an HR perspective.

Switching to Slack was seamless for our team, coming from using other messaging services. Their tutorial service helps to provide operating tips when you begin using. There are many more features and functions available that seem to be modified and improved as necessary.

Pros

- conversations are stored
- can set conversations to public or private
- you can highlight certain pieces of information to easily refer to later
- can tag team members to information or threads they may not be already following

Cons

- I still have to also operate Skype to converse with others outside of my organization who do not utilize/pay for Slack
- Can sometimes be easy to not have the right privacy settings on a thread, which can be detrimental

Slack has become the hub of all my communication, eliminating more internal company emails and other software notification emails.

Pros

We have eliminated 97% of all internal emails by moving to Slack. The speed, ease of use, private channels, guest and multi-guest accounts, and all the integrations and apps are what makes this an excellent hub for all communication.

Cons

If you do not configure notifications properly you can get too many notifications and start to ignore the ones that you really should pay attention to. Without explicit instructions, many people may not properly set up notifications to calm down the noise.

This software is great for collaboration with others inside and outside of my organization and has allowed for solving some challenges that may have been difficult to find on user forums.

Pros

I really like the feel of Slack, it is almost like an RSS feed and it keeps things current and in the "right now" so that as the project changes, the focus changes, and you can easily see what needs to happen now. I like to collaboration that can be afforded through Slack, and how conversational it is. I also love that Slack is great outside of an organization. Through my company, I have a few different roles, and there are slack channels available for conversation, help and helping others for a lot of my day and even though we may not have been formally introduced, we can still collaborate.

Cons

The RSS like feel of the product does make things a bit difficult for management of past events, especially if the conversation is flowing well. Management has to have a good grip on the tags in order to make sure that things are easy to navigate. I did downgrade for ease of use, we have had a bit of a problem with lost channels, accidentally removing people or yourself, and lost information but it was mostly due to user error. The problem isn't that it happened because obviously it was caused by a human, not the program, but because of how easily it happened without realization. There needs to be better warning.

Very good for teams that work remotely. Less so for an office environment.

Pros

It is very good for offices where people are not on-site. It allows for themed conversations in real time and we continue to use it with our off-site teams. It's interface is very nice and easy to use and understand. The mobile app is an important bonus. The flexibility of who can be in what conversation is great and could conceivably be used to engage outside stakeholders in discussions.

Cons

I found it difficult to reply to comments that were older in the thread. So you'd constantly have to say "re: xxx" before every message. Overall, while there were some upsides, it did involve having another place to check for correspondence every time you wanted to check in and the services were not enough of an upgrade of email + gchat to justify continuing to use it internally.

Pros

This has greatly enhanced communication in our organization. Direct communication is easier, and setting up groups is great. We have channels for client specific communication, a general channel, a management channel, and even a random channel that allows us to blow off steam, send something funny to the crew, etc.

Cons

There is a limit to how many documents, jpegs, etc you can have on slack. While this is to be expected, the process of deleting items to free up space is a "one-at-a-time" process that is time-consuming and could be streamlined.

A centralised system to use with a large team in the organisation

Pros

You can have multiple channels so you can keep conversations about multiple topics separate which is useful so you get the answers you need for multiple questions without confusing people in one trail.

Cons

It does not fully replace other software as it is hard to communicate with people outside of your organisation so there is still a need for other software which then makes it hard to get everyone to remember to use both

Pros

Slack is the best collaborative App, we have come across. It's very easy to configure and deploy. Slack mobile app is very nice.

Cons

Message notification comes very late in mobile app. And this is very annoying when it is a matter of quick reply.

Communication! Integrates with plugins to read from our other systems for daily reminders and stats. We mainly use for communicating with other teams for meetings or passing along status updates on work. Also, we use it to send alerts to our development team on errors so they can head start on fixing the issue.

Pros

Slack is fully integratable! You can write your own plugins to have bots remind you of daily tasks that you sometimes forget to do (We call our bot Alfred). Furthermore, we use it to send reports to our developers of defects and tasks that are assigned to them. Slack has a wide rang of variety and customization options. Slack also has a mobile app which is great for communicating with your team on the go.

Cons

Not really a conplaint since its for the free version that it has a max length for historic messages and you can easily hit that mark with a decent size team, and you can end up loosing historic conversations. One thing it does not have are custom alert sounds, which I think would make it a complete package.
