Also file sharing is better and files are easier to open (the in-app preview works really well). Never had major bugs and you can create as many channels as you want. You can connect several other apps like Drive, Calendar, Confluence and Jira which helps a lot with having everything in one environment. #### Cons Not the best one for calls. Should be improved to be more similar to Skype. Also not possible to record a meeting. The overall interface makes day-to-day communication straightforward. #### Cons Managing a large number of channels and conversations can sometimes become difficult, especially when there are many notifications and ongoing discussions. I have occasionally experienced minor bugs and issues such as delayed notifications or messages taking time to synchronize. File Sharing can also become harder to manage when many files are shared across different channels. Slack has become the default place work happens rather than just another chat tool. For day to day engineering work it sits at the center: design discussion, code review pings, deploy and alarm notifications, and incident response all land in channels owned by the team that owns the service, which makes handoffs and postmortems much easier because the timeline is already written down. The searchable history is what makes it worth the price, since a lot of institutional knowledge that would otherwise be lost stays recoverable. The tradeoffs are cost at headcount and the discipline required to keep channels from turning into noise. Neither is a dealbreaker, but both need active management. I would pick it again. #### Ratings breakdown - Ease of use: 5/5 - Value for money: 3/5 - Functionality: 4/5 #### Pros The channel based structure holds up as an org grows. The feature I lean on hardest is search with modifiers like in:, from:, and before:, which reliably surfaces the one thread from eight months ago where someone explained a deploy quirk. The integration surface is the real value for an engineering team: incoming webhooks, the Events API, and Workflow Builder let us pipe CI results, on call pages, and alarm state into the channel that owns the service, so triage happens in one place instead of across three tools. Huddles are low friction enough that we use them instead of scheduling a call, which has cut a lot of meeting overhead. Slack Connect has replaced most email threads with external vendors. Uptime has been solid, and once you learn the keyboard shortcuts the client is fast to navigate. #### Cons The desktop app is heavy. With a dozen workspaces and busy channels it will sit on several gigabytes of memory, and cold start is slow on older hardware. Threads are still the weak spot: an important decision often lives inside a thread while the channel shows nothing, so context gets buried unless someone remembers to also send it to the channel. Per seat pricing adds up quickly at scale, and the message history limit on the free plan makes a real trial hard. Notification tuning is entirely on the user and the defaults are noisy, so new hires spend their first month drowning. Search across multiple workspaces is still clumsy compared to search within one. No incentive was offered Slack has been part of the corporate toolkits of the companies I've worked for since 2017 (across three different companies, from Silicon Valley to digital services work in the government contracting industry). I've used it while working 100% in-office at a globally distributed company; when a company was transitioning to remote during the pandemic's height; and now, at a company that has been remote-first since its inception in 2016. After I used it for the first time at one job, I started asking during interviews whether they used Slack, because I knew it'd be a difference-maker in my onboarding and overall day-to-day expereince. Also, since I started using it in 2017, I've been impressed with the feature rollouts over the years. It hasn't stalled, never gets stale, and keeps getting better. Slack has huge gains for my formal work (e.g., channel-specific topics by deals and projects; a customizable canvas for each channel to link helpful resources; the Huddle feature for impromptu calls; seamless integration with mobile; tons of personalization features to make it right for my workday - hello Focus Mode -; integrations, like with Google Suite that make is easy to share files...the list goes on) And it's also great for employee engagement, especially in a remote setting. With the right people contributing to an engaging company culture, Slack keeps the workday interactive and, dare I say, fun. We have channels to discuss hobbies and special interests, like our corporate Fantasy Football league, book clubs, and channels for working parents to commiserate, encourage one another, and remind us all when it's time to sign the kids up for summer camp (the right answer is February, every year). This is where the magic happens. As an elder millennial, I just love it. I'm efficient with work, and it brings back the best bits of the AIM I grew up on...but for work. It's also super reliable. Over the years and across countries, I've used Slack, I don't think I've ever experienced an outage. #### Cons Honestly, not much. The only time I get frustrated with it is when I need to invite partners (from external companies) into our workspace for targeted deal collaboration.
