Square Point of Sale Software


 

Square Point of Sale is a mobile phone app available on Google Play and the App Store. The system is designed to run on a tablet or smartphone. Key capabilities include sales reports, inventory and digital receipts, as well as valuable analytics information.

The software provides regular free updates, which equip companies with new features to help run their business more effectively and efficiently. It also allows users to populate a spreadsheet with historic sales data for tax calculations.

Square Point of Sale works offline by providing a recording of transactions even when the Internet is down by storing the data locally, and automatically syncs all information when the user is connected again.

This sytem also offers the management of details such as names, quantities and prices, as well as features such as credit card processing, discounts, gift cards, refunds, barcode scanner and more.

Pros

Easy to use and the equipment is not hard to set up and a good value. Have multiple locations and works great at both with the chip and swipe.

Cons

Uses the patients first name and initial of last name instead of the last name on reports which makes it a little challenging.

My overall experience with the Square POS system has been great. As a first time brick and mortar business owner of a small shop, this fit my needs well.

Pros

Quick setup, not too difficult to understand, mobile capability, detailed reports, helps me keep up with inventory

Cons

The ONLY con was during the connectivity issue after Apple pushed out iOS 11. For those of us whose iPads were set to automatically update, we had to suffer through powering down the iPads every time they lost connection to the cc reader, receipt printer and cash drawer until Apple released iOS 11.2. That was frustrating especially when your shop is packed.

Pros

Square works great! I use this for DJ gigs and studio sessions and it is so easy to use when I’m out on the road. It’s saves services, allows tips, and takes customer cards just from the phone. Super convenient and easy to use. A lot of services I pay people for also use Square and it’s really becoming popular.

Cons

They have a small charge for transactions which can cut into profit a little. Also I do not recommend for large companies.

If you need a very simple POS system that allows you to easily accept all forms of payment from customers, Square is a great option. Its very easy to use, sets up quickly, and has payment processing built in.

Cons

Its not very robust, so its not a good option for larger or more complex companies who need advanced accounting and inventory management capabilities.

-Very easy to use and setup, now setup where you can manage your payroll and many other aspects of your business quickly and easily.

Cons

-I really don't have any major complaints about this software, but given that I must write some cons for the product I would just say that the 1% that they charge for the instant transfer is a little bit steep, this allows you to get your money immediately rather than 1-2 business days. I would think it should be 0.25% to 0.50%.

I have both a Square and a Paypal reader. I find myself always reaching for Paypal. Square is great, don't get me wrong, but I am more familiar with Paypal so I go with what I know. Square comes with a cute little reader for point of sale transactions. The app works. I've never experienced a glitch. There are many opportunities for customization of inventory as well.

Cons

I just find that the checkout process is a bit...cumbersome. It's just the layout. It's not awful, but I don't prefer it.

Square versus Anovia Payments

Be an informed consumer, learn more about Anovia, a much more robust, secure and cost-effective solution to Square.

Cons

Square readers are not as secure and could create exposures for data theft and credit card fraud. The Anovia reader does not have this exposure.
Square is a much more expensive and less secure alternative to Anovia Payments.

Using Square to process credit cards

Great way to process credit cards for low volume types of businesses.

Pros

It's free - there's no monthly fee to utilize the software. They only charge a percentage of the amount charged and a per transaction fee. The fact that they don't charge a monthly fee makes it more economical for small businesses that don't have a high volume or recurring volume of credit card sales.

Cons

You have to use an ipad to run the credit cards. It would be nice to be able to use their website to process the credit card. When there's a problem it's next to impossible to get someone on the phone to help you with it.

We use Square at tradeshows that we attend. It is easy to use and not complicated at all. Also it generates quick one touch ring up buttons so makes it easier.

Cons

Importing and exporting items list could be made a little easier. It was a little confusing importing a list. We lost everything on the item list one time but luckily we had a backup file.

The best Credit Card processor and a whole lot more!

Pros

Straightforward product and fees, no guess work. We will never use traditional credit card processing ever again. Traditional credit card processing is riddled with false claims and hidden fees. Square does not do this at all, I get paid the next day in full and they provide to me free of charge an olineline presence with a shopping cart...FREE How cool. Oh and did I mention that it all runs on an IPAD and IPHONe. I can make and collect money anywhere. It also works with no internet. Perfect product for us.

Cons

We wish the shopping cart were integrated into Infusionsoft and Rezovation (our hotel reservation system,) Also, we wish it could inventory items that we use in the business that we do not sell like bottles, corks, supplies.

- proprietary equipment cannot be reused and quickly looses its value. -All in one system makes it expensive if something breaks. -Expensive processing, especially after new price increases.- Terrible customer service, especially when it matters (cannot process, missing funds and chargebacks ).

I like that square is completely free - the only time you pay anything is after a credit card transaction, and even then it's completely affordable. You only pay if you run through a credit card, there are no monthly bills.

Cons

I would like to be able to manage my inventory in the app but at this point that isn't possible. I am just getting started with setting up all my barcodes and would love to be able to scan the item and then immediately enter the quantity I have on hand.

It was very easy to set up and acocunt and start taking payments immediately. The app is very user-friendly and helpful. It's wonderful they give you a free reader as well.

Cons

Now that most credit cards have a chip, the free reader is less secure for payments, however the chip reader has to be purchased.

Pros

Using Prosperworks has made it possible for me to easily track all communications with my customers and prospects. This is important because there is frequently a period of several months between reservation and actual purchase/delivery of our service. Each purchase has unique characteristics that are easier to keep track of because of this CRM. I also like that it's easy to set up tasks for myself . . . and the tasks sych with my Google calendar.

Cons

The only thing that I don't like about it is that it was created for customers with a much bigger customer list. I got a message from Prosperworks noting that my use of the software was far less than most of their customers. So . . . I am probably paying a premium to use this great stuff . . . In a good year, I may not have more than 200 - 300 customers.

My company used to use another POS/register system by another big name brand, and I was so let down by how little functionality there was. After switching to Square, there's no comparison. Square Register makes completing transactions a breeze for my employees at the register and our customers. It works well with the bluetooth connected card readers, and works intuitively to make transactions faster. Reporting/tracking is simple and running customized reports is easy to do by location/device/date/etc. Highly recommend!

I've had numerous companies approach me as far as their rates to use them. Square so far has been the best. No one compares, for my small business. There are a few things here and there that I wish would be different, but when I compare what I get for what I pay, I'm very satisfied.

Pros

Invoicing, easy payments, custom register menu.

Cons

It is automatic when two discounts apply, the % will be taken before the $ amount discount. When we offer 10% off to military and they earn a $ discount, it isn't calculated properly for us. So we have to make a few tweaks in order for it to work out. Called customer service and there is no way to change this.
Also, the "Guest" feature was accidentally turned on when I was exploring adding payroll/employees to Square. Once it's activated, it can't be removed. So we now have to hit Guest each time instead of it automatically opening up the Square Register.

Advice to Others

Definitely research your options. For me, Square is the most affordable and lowest cost for what you get. Overall, very happy with it.

I enjoy using Square, especially the function that allows you to still use cards if wifi is down. The one thing that was difficult was actually sliding the card through the square reader... if it wasn't exactly perfect, the payment won't go through.

We used square register for a drive-through coffee stand. It is intuitive and quick. Two great features for a drive through. It's record keeping and inventory abilities were lacking. Specifically, I wish there was a good way to utilize discounts or coupons but track them. They would easily apply but there wasn't a way to report on how many or which were applied.

Cons

Card readers were inconsistent at best and it lacked a good reporting system.

We started with the Aloha processing system and it was so hard to use. Changing things on the screen was so difficult. We switched to Square and it's been so easy every sense. The customer service is probably the best part they are so helpful

I just love square. You can us it anywhere you your business may travel to. The charges are not expensive, Very reasonable. They are very good at letting you know cut off times for the holidays.
