Square Point of Sale Software


Square Point of Sale is a mobile phone app available on Google Play and the App Store. The system is designed to run on a tablet or smartphone. Key capabilities include online payment processing, sales reports, inventory and digital receipts, as well as valuable analytics information.

The software provides regular free updates, which equip companies with new features on a regular basis. It also allows users to populate a spreadsheet with historic sales data for tax calculations.

Square Point of Sale works offline by providing a recording of transactions even when the internet is down by storing the data locally, and it automatically syncs all information when users can access the internet again.

This sytem also allows users to manage details such as names, quantities and prices, as well as features such as credit card processing, discounts, gift cards, refunds, a barcode scanner and more.

Easy To Use

Square makes it easy to process transactions, especially when you make sales outside of the store.

Pros

Simple and straightforward and it texts receipt to customer. Dashboard is rich in features and easy to understand. Makes it easy to keep track of transactions.

Cons

There are so many features that I have not had the chance to try everything out yet, but so far I have not found anything that was complicated or unpleasant to use.

Pros

Love Square POS - very user friendly. The startup process is super fast and you can get going quickly.

Cons

The only thing for me is remembering to bring my lightning converter if I need to use square on the go. Will upgrade to the compatible one soon!

Good for off site business

Pros

Simple system. We use this square when we do off sites, and can't access our every day point of sales system

Cons

It runs on it's on system, of course, so can't tally up into 1 report with sales, p-mix, cash management, etc

Simple, Fast and Easy to Use

The app is also very simple and clean, which makes it easier to use.

Pros

The setup of the devices is very simple. I love how fast it transfers to my account, by the next morning it's in there. Detailed breakdowns, convenient transaction lists. I recently set up eGift cards through square and it's very simple and convenient, which makes it more accessible to clients.

Cons

I have had trouble with the swipe feature. I rarely use it because most have a chip, but sometimes I've bypassed the swipe reader altogether and just put the card in manually. The only issue with that is the higher fee for manual entry.

Great for small businesses

Pros

Easy and convenient to set up. Great way to accept payment for items or services on the go. Can have it integrated with your inventory system.

Cons

Customer info is not always captured or promoted automatically so when using it for items being persons ie future event tickets it can be a bit cumbersome to ensure that you have a way to get in contact with your customer to ensure they receive their item.

Used for Multiple Businesses

Pros

I have been a long time used of Square, using it for multiple businesses. It is so nice to be able to take my business anywhere and make transactions especially when I do trade shows. Easy to set-up, easy to use and they send a free card reader when you sign-up.

Cons

I find sometimes that the reader doesn't always work so I have had to buy multiple readers so that if one doesn't read the credit card, hopefully the next one will.

Amazing POS, easiest to use

Definitely best for small business or franchises.

Pros

By far the easiest and most streamlined POS out there for both the employee and the customer. Makes purchasing simple and I've found that discovering old receipts or finding information that would otherwise take hours is a very quick process.

Cons

Not as many features and functionalities as other POS systems but I think it's meant to be that way - simple. Doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that other restaurant POS systems have, for example.

Pros

Ideal if you want to take credit cards at a pop up or something very low volume. Easy to use on front and back end.

Cons

Not a solution for high volume. Won't offer functionality a true point of sale system will. You can't run a real business with this.

Not perfect, but a big improvement!

Pros

Sales staff really like it compared to cash register and credit card terminal (or old-fashioned knuckle-buster imprinter for our remote locations). Predictable fees, which have been lower than for our previous traditional credit card processors, especially for in-person purchases and for American Express. No monthly fees or PCI compliance issues. Square Community is a helpful resource. Dashboard with a variety of reports works pretty well, and it's handy to be able to generate sales reports or search for individual transactions quickly.

Cons

Lack of good integration with Magento Community web software (only bottom line charge comes through). No ability to easily transfer inventory from one location to another. Problem with cash total on drawer report not matching sales report. Usually cash drawer is correct, which means sales are not recorded properly. This problem has existed since at least August 2016, while their engineers work on it. This lowest cost version of Square probably gets less attention than their monthly subscription products. Daily subtraction of processing fees creates a lot more work in QuickBooks than traditional credit card processors charging fees monthly. Customer support has been hit or miss. We've been misled a couple times. After uploading a file with inventory quantities for each product at each location, which took a lot of time to create, we discovered that inventory didn't start counting down with each sale unless we activated that feature on each product individually. That makes no sense. Searching for sales of individual items can be quite slow because it starts loading ALL items before giving a chance to choose.

Good cloud based POS option definetely

Pros

Cloud based, responsive design, great UX, is a really good option and also is free to use, you can purchase some devices to complete the experience like a stand, scanner, money box, etc.

Cons

I ended up not using it because the lack of functionality that my business was needing, it is a simple POS and I needed some rules or more complex features to work with but for other kind of user this software will make the trick.

Ease of Use for Donations

Pros

With or without the swiper, Square is easy to use. This has become my go to option for taking credit card donations from donors. I do need to upgrade to the newest swiper soon, but the app makes it easy to enter info by hand. We have used this at a number of events for donations, ticket sales, etc. And I like that it can be used by more than one person at a time. Allows a bunch of us to run around at the event doing whatever we need to.

Cons

It doesn't have the ability to collect donor information. I know this isn't what it was made for, but that would make things easier for acknowledging gifts.

Great for someone just starting out but depending on the volume and type of business not great for the long term.

Pros

This product is probably the easiest I have used to accept payments. simple to set up and get started.

Cons

Because it is a "mobile" option their interest fees are higher. They charge additional fees to manually process a credit card which was frustrating for me as I have many customers who order and pay over the phone with their card. Also not everyone has tap for the new debit tap option, and if they do normally their invoice exceeds the tap max.

A better (most of the time) alternative in the POS offerings

Every time we end up going with a customer to (TD) bank machine to get cash because we can't process his/her card I'm on the look for an alternative...

Pros

No heavy investment or monthly fee for equipment. Call up menu for most "inventory" items making for quick processing.

Cons

If you have any customers who deal with the TD bank you might want to try another system. Square won't accept most of their cards

It's relatively easy to set up and it's relatively easy to understand the payment structure. The product also looks great!

Cons

If you really shop around, other competitors might have more complicated payment structures but they will probably be a little less expensive.

Amazing software!

Easy system for making sales

Pros

It is easy to use, portable, and has transformed our ability to make sales. The reports are easy to view (can be customized by day, group of days, month, etc.) and if you use the category feature, it is easy to track which accounts the sales go to.

Cons

It can be a little difficult to navigate or organize, and does not always seem to have the giftcard or discount options that I need.

Never Received My Money

Pros

Product is somewhat easy to navigate, battery life is good. Those are the only pros about the product.

Cons

Though this product is easy to use, there is no point in using it considering I never received my money for the transactions that I processed through the reader. It is normally supposed to be deposited right into your bank account however nothing was deposited into my account. It have been about 2 months now and the customer service team seems unable to do anything about it. They are VERY difficult to get in contact with, and keep saying the issue is on the bank's end which is not true. I used the SQUARE reader to process small transactions for my business and it totaled quite a large sum of money that I now have no access to. Absolutely appalling! Even worse that it feels like there is no one to fix this issue.

Great, simple and easy to use P.O.S. for many types of businesses

Overall, I used the Square POS for a limited time but during that time I liked the simplicity of its interface and its clean look.

Pros

I used the Square POS system along with the Square contactless and chip reader. What I liked about this product is its simplistic yet clean look and fits well in my business - did not take up too much space. I also liked how easy it was to learn the actual POS system. It was not complicated and very straight forward and I was able to quickly get it setup for my needs. The learning curve is very simple and everyone at the company was able to pick it up with minimal experience. I liked the clean look of the interface itself and it is very organized.

Cons

A few problems that did stick out was the fact that sometimes the reader itself would need multiple tries in order to read a card correctly. It is not of the sturdiest material and that may have contributed to not working properly at times. Also, the merchant service fee per swipe is a bit on the pricey side at 2.75% per in person transaction (higher rate for keyed in transactions). There are cheaper options available but the convenience and availability of Square products are definitely something to keep in mind.
