Established in 2006, Xero is a web-based accounting system designed for small and growing businesses. Xero connects small businesses with their trusted advisors and provides business owners with instant visibility of their financial position.

As a web-based solution, Xero can be accessed from any device with an active Internet connection. With Xero's robust accounting features, small businesses can view their cash flows, transactions and account details from any location. Bank transactions are all automatically imported and coded. Online bill pay helps keep track of spending and stay on top of bills due, improving relationships with the vendors that provide critical business materials.

With Xero, personal expenses can also be managed with mobile review and approval of each receipt. Xero offers unlimited user support and integration with a variety of systems, including ADP, Bill.com and Vend. The solution comes with 30-days free trial period for product testing and feature evaluation.

Pros

You can share the documents and print them from the cloud. The website is verybresponsive as well to educate you about the program. We have all used xerox in some waybor another. They have been here for a long time for a reason.

Cons

Again, this is a congested field. Competition is always good though so youncant go wrong. All is well.

Overall quite happy with this software but like every software it isn't perfect but gets the job done.

Pros

Easy to maneuver and find what you are looking for. Ability to have multiple entities linked to the one account, for example a subsidiary or management company.

Cons

Customer service or lack thereof. Reporting functionality is not great, you can get some add ons to Google Sheets that work but you also need to pay for those in addition.

Accounting and bookkeeping are my business, so being able to demo such an aesthetically pleasant app that integrates so well is a real boon. Clients take immediately to the UI and we've genuinely had a 90% on-board rate with Xero. We've tried other Apps, but we won't be working with any other software. There's really there's nothing out there we'd rather recommend.
I have found their CS to be first rate, (despite my Account Manager statement), and this end of any accounting SAAS is absolutely vital.
Xero has set the standard for over a decade and it's a testimony to their Devs that they're growing steadily despite their giant competition.

Pros

Smooth-running and numerous integrations with other essential business management apps
Reasonably priced for small business
Has integrated inventory and billing through PayPal and Stripe

Cons

I'm a very loyal user and my company has grown up shoulder-to-shoulder with Xero's growth. There's very few wrinkles from an accountant's POV. I find startup clients sometimes get confused with the "Easy-to-Use-And-Setup" spiel - it certainly is for a bookkeeper familiar with the app! In general, the dashboard apps in this industry can belie their many-layered nature.

Easy to use and navigate, doesn't require professional expertise for basic transactions. Still need a bookkeeper or accountant to properly administer, however.

Cons

Way more expensive than competitors and on top of that, bank feeds constantly fail and/or transactions don't properly get picked up. Support is extremely slow and salespeople care nothing about helping their clients.

Easy to use. Accessible from anywhere in the world. Quite stable, as long as your internet connection is ok.

Cons

Terrible support. No option to speak to anyone. Email support is purposely hidden so you can’t bother them. Most times there is no working support link, and the advisors know less than we do. Impossible to pay more than 200 bills to a supplier at a time, with no promises to add this feature anytime soon. Bulk payments do not show who you have paid, which is a pretty basic flaw...also no promise to add this feature. No report to show your current overall standing with all creditors unless you sift through all invoices.

If your business is service based (such as an accountancy or legal firm) Xero will work for you. If you send actual physical goods out to customers, forget it. Or if your service is delivered to more than one location for the same customer.

Pros

It is easy to use and the features it does have make the product streamlined.
Gives you options on different reports, allows you to 'favorite' some reports and frequently used settings.
A national 'address book' of contacts is available when you start typing the name of a customer you haven't invoiced before.

Cons

Customer support and product improvement is woeful - seriously woeful.
To get a simple feature like additional addresses for a contact, has taken over 6 years. In the midst of this discussion, Xero removed the dates on posts, apparently to disguise the duration of the thread. Please have a read of the following;

Very unclear about the ease of moving all data to upstream ERP systems like Netsuite and FinancialForce.

Pros

Mobile optimized design. Nice solution for startups and small companies. Gusto is great for small company payroll and the interface is easy to use.

Cons

Pricing should be going down, not up. Would have like to see the service features increasing at the entry price point. Really expected unlimited banking transactions and an increase in invoices\bills, not same old. Recent pricing changes starting November 1 looks like they are just aping QB pricing and features, very disappointing. Not as easy to customize and run reports as QB.

This is a very detailed accounting software, I can put in my employees for various different things I need to pay them for and can create invoices for my suppliers. The online support is helpful.

Cons

I wish I was able to call in and speak to an actual human being when I have a problem. They also don't offer time tracking like Quickbooks does, so I ended up switching back after the trial.

I like that the bank feeds are easy to set up, and to manage and code transactions. Invoicing features are professional looking and functional. It is helpful that Xero can integrate with other software like Expensify.

Cons

The only small issue i don't like is the delay in transactions appearing in Xero after making a purchase using your bank card etc.

There are more than enough features for most small businesses. Xero integrates with more 3rd party software and applications than any other I've used and the reporting feature is now standard for so many business that investors are used to the format.

Cons

Although the list of features is decent if your business grows and you need the more specific and complicated features of pro accounting software then there are a few limitations.

Steer away from this unless you want the most basic accounting system that lacks functionality you see in every other system.

Pros

Its a relatively simple interface, reasonably fast for a system f so many users. Simple & convenient Ban Rec funtion.

Cons

Where do I start? The reports are basic and there is no report writer. Then, when you get a report, it writes it in exactly the opposite format that every other accounting system. (It starts at the newest and moves right to the oldest.)

You can only have 1 contact and address per account and only 1 delivery address so if you have multiple contacts in a client, forget it. It updates all previous invoices to that contact if you change the contact, which is a straight breach of the GST rules in Australia. (There have been 500+ request to fix this over 5 years and nothing has happened.)

The biggest complaint is a total lack of focus on customer requests and a just trying to flog the product to bookkeepers & accountants who then on-sell it.

Cons

The lack of support is unbelievable. For the amount they charge you, you would think they would have some sort of telephone support. If this was my company I would not use Xero ever.

Xero lives in the clouds. They do not realise that some of their clients may need real help from a person on the phone sometimes. Too many options on the help site,gets confusing unless you have several hours to browse. Still no return call after 14 hours!

Trying to get support in urgent difficult situations expect to wait 2 to 9 hours ,tried to contact twice by email. Cannot run a business with so much downtime trying to contact them

Pros

Integrates with lots of 3rd party apps and zapier to streamline workflows and automation, but nothing most webhooks couldn't do.

Cons

Really bad support. Support wont respond for up to 30 days and they'll continue to bill for an additional 30 days after your cancellation, which is unheard of in the age of saas.

We have had a great experience with Xero and look forward to using them in the future. I know that the software will only continue to get better and more robust.

Pros

I appreciate the functionality of Xero and that they are still coming out with new features to try out. The reporting in Xero is clean and just what we need.

Cons

For complex accounting situations, Xero doesn't always have the ability to record such situations. These are limited in occurrence. I think the Checks module in the software is my least favorite just because it could use some simplifying in terms of how you void a check, for instance.

You end asking yourself: How can you run a business with out it?
Is a central piece of software for any one that wants to save time by simplifying the accounting tasks. There is nothing out there that comes even close!

Pros

Is super easy to use and is sooo elegant. The design is superb, makes everything looks outdated.
Somehow all the complicated and boring tasks of accounting look like something nice and easy with Xero.

Cons

Price wise is still super low cost compared to traditional tools, you get a much better value for your money. But there are still free online solutions out there that can give a nice entry point for a freelance or small company

As a firm we switched to xero almost a year ago, and it transformed the way we approach accounting services for clients - for the better.
Our own internal accounting became a lot easier and smoother, with the greater collaboration that we needed.
But it also changed our clients that we switched over to xero, from other cloud accounting software or traditional desktop software

Pros

There isn’t a lot of cloud accounting software today that can handle the more complex businesses as well as xero.
The automatic bank feeds (they are adding new direct bank feeds constantly),
the integrations with over 700 third party applications
Automatic invoice reminders
Ability to do flexible budgeting and forecasting in xero and report on it
Tracking Categories and reporting on a Category is super easy
Fixed asset register is included and easy depreciation allocation
Unlimted users (great basic permissions - more flexibility lacking)
There is constant updates and upgrades with a solid product improvement pipeline

Cons

Would love a third tracking category
It doesn’t have a delivery note option (although through a complex process you can create one)
Customer statements doesn’t include the standard days outstanding buckets as expected, e.g. debt due currently, 30 day, 60 days etc
Customer prepayments doesn’t appear as credits/negative balances on statements - very confusing to customers
You can’t delete a contact once created (very easy to create a contact), only archive
Would have loved for finance lease (amortisation table) reporting to be set automatically

Great - I got a phone call from their support to help me get set up and deal with any problems. I was able to link Xero to my bank account I was up and running really quickly with pretty much my whole accounts on there.

Overall Xero has made is so much easier to expand our business due to its ease of use.

Pros

Before using Xero I was using a more traditional bookkeeping desktop application. Xero is everything that the other application was not. Xero uses plain language to make it easy to enter data. I am rarely baffled by accounting terms and on the occasion I don't understand something their built in help is really useful. The fact that is it online is perhaps taken for granted by most nowadays but when I started having an application that I could access from anywhere and more importantly so could my accountant was a real bonus.

Cons

There are very few minor issues. Namely that it is not possible to fully customise the look and feel of invoices. You are restricted to a limited number of fonts. Given that Xero's mantra was always beautiful software, this is somewhat ironic.

I used to use Quickbooks and it took a long time. Xero eliminated that. Everything is well laid out and easy to use, and it's constantly evolving back on user feedback.

Pros

- bank feeds
- easy reconciling
- rules for reconciling
- machine learning to suggest reconcile matching
- payroll
- custom branding templates
- stripe integration (and auto reconciling minus the fees etc)
- Zapier integration, and many other API connectors
- okay reporting

Cons

- the reporting can be a bit clunky and not all that customisable depending on what you need
- payroll can be a nightmare if you don't get it right from the very start
- the item ID's and descriptions still aren't all that logical but it's good enough

I have only had to deal with the customer service team once, and it was an easy, helpful experience.

Pros

I love the Xero to Xero ease of sending invoices. The ability to quickly create invoices and send them through the Xero network has really reduced the amount of time I was spending before I got the software. I also like that I can easily track and reconcile my accounts easily, and Xero intuitively recognises previous transactions and helpfully categorises them for me.
They also have a really helpful Q&A page/tips etc.

Cons

Nothing really, I think it's a great piece of software.

Xero is an excellent option for small businesses, with many integrations and excellent acquisitions that will expand its usefulness over time. A breeze of a company to work with, their training is also simple and pleasant.

Pros

Clear, simple layouts; many app integrations; consistently good customer service; excellent focus on research and development of new features. More robust than softwares like FreshBooks or Wave.

Cons

Less aesthetically appealing than QuickBooks.

I started using Xero as a replacement for another accounting software that was too expensive. I wanted something simple and easy to use. I did not really get that with Xero. It is simpler, but often it is not intuitive. If you are going to evaluate Xero, decide whether it's for you quickly so you can either invest the time to learn it, or move on to another product.

Pros

Xero is a professional accounting program that lets you prepare your bookkeeping quickly and efficiently.

Cons

Xero does not have the ease of use of other accounting products on the market. Certain tasks are not intuitive and difficult to find/use.
