Unleashed is an inventory management system designed for midsize businesses. Launched in 2009 by New Zealand-based Unleashed Software, Unleashed provides real-time visibility of all inventory management processes and transactions across sales channels, staff and warehouses.

Users can calculate total product costs and profit margins through Unleashed’s reporting and analysis capabilities. It also supports standard inventory management features such as inventory optimization, kitting and bill of materials. Unleashed is suitable for businesses in the consumer goods, manufacturing, retail and electronics industries.

Unleashed is cloud-based and is available for purchase as a monthly subscription, with four different tiers based on the number of users, products and warehouses. The Lite version allows for one user, one warehouse, one currency and 500 products, while the premium Enterprise version allows for 5 users, 5 warehouses, 25,000 products and multiple currencies. All versions allow for unlimited customers and suppliers.

Lacks even the most basic 'smarts' required for retail inventory management and customer service is woeful

We are an online retail business, running on Shopify, with approximately 2000 SKU's. I've heard good things about U/L from product creators with small product catalogues but this is not a solution for a serious retail business.

Pros

It captures landed costs and margins and is the SaaS platform that can be accessed from anywhere and more convenient to maintain vs. PC based software.

Cons

Good luck integrating with Xero without costly setup via accountants.

Extremely limited in terms of real world functionality. We still have not been able to perform a simple stock take due to the systems' considerable limitations and no one on the U/L customer service team is willing to help us beyond explaining Unleashed's limitations and how we must conform to them.

Out of the box reporting is woeful. We had to integrate with Power BI to gain any meaningful insights.

Customer service team are lovely people but not solution focused. If asking for a (seemingly common sense) solution to a problem, expect many emails back and forth with no resolution.

Basic Inventory Software & Cold Customer Service

When we found a superior inventory management solution (www.cin7.com) we gave our notice to Unleashed to close our account, prior to the next billing cycle. Unleashed informed us they would bill us another month's payment as it was buried in their terms and conditions. This was despite me bringing to their attention that their website stated in their FAQ "While we’ll be very sad to see you go, you can cancel your subscription at any time by emailing support@unleashedsoftware.com" (they have subsequently updated their website, but steadfastly refused to waive this unfair extra fee.)
When I asked for Unleashed management to intervene, no one from management responded. Hopefully I can help others avoid a similar fate. My gift to other business owners out there is this... do not sign up with Unleashed until you have review/assessed Cin7. Cheers

Pros

It is online software (SAAS) so it is accessed via internet and therefore much more convenient to access/maintain than PC based software.

Cons

Too basic for the needs of a serious retail business. (we have over 5000 products)
Reports are limited and Purchase Order creation in particular has no 'smarts'. i.e. when you add an item to a PO, you would like to know how many you already have on order, how many you have a hand, how many have sold in the last month? Not possible on the PO screen in Unleashed. Also no direct integration with 3PL warehouses.
For these and many other reasons we spent most our time using spreadsheets which defeats the purpose of specialist inventory management software in my opinion.

We have a basic version: a month for 3 users. We don't use all the functionality of the package so perhaps I'm being a tad harsh with 3 stars, but we still have to pay.

Pros

Easy(ish) to setup. It has Clear menus and integrates with other software(we use Magento - Unleashed - Xero). The Dashboard seems good.

Cons

The integration to Xero is a bit clunky. It doesn't take across notes on a product, so our Xero invoices often need to be manually adjusted, which is not the point of integrated packages. Well known problem throughout the forums, but no solution as yet.

Unleashed has been a very important part of our business since we started. We use Unleashed for our manufacturing, IM and sales. It is a vital part of the ease of ordering our ingredients and packaging, manufacturing our drinks, managing our inventory, monitoring our cost of good sold and invoicing our customers. It does this seemlessly and interacts with our Xero system seemlessly - too easy. We use Unleashed in New Zealand and the UK. Recently we've been able to use the Unleashed mobile app to support our sales.

Pros

Ease of use, reliability, ease to introduce to new employees, functionality, value for money and numerous other attributes.

Cons

We're looking forward to new developments from unleashed

The interface mirrors that of many inventory management solutions and is easy and straightforward to use.

Pros

It's easy to use. Customer support is excellent and gives detailed, personal responses within a day.

Cons

Does not offer Amazon integration. I feel many merchants including us use Amazon, and the workarounds are very cumbersome. Creating Amazon as a customer and updating inventory everyday (including returns, unshipped products, and when Amazon just flat out loses or eventually finds lost inventory) is too tedious. Sellbrite offers full Amazon integration if you want to see how they do it.

Advice to Others

If you don't use Amazon, Unleashed can probably work for you. If you do though, it's best to look elsewhere.

Unleashed is definitely the most intuitive and accessible of the inventory / MRP systems we evaluated. It provides flexibility, and gets out of the way when needed, while also providing straightforward workflows for common tasks. A large reason for selecting it was because we could have some users (like our CEO, sales and Eng. staff) who may use the system very infrequently.

We believed that if they had to re-train on the proper workflows, they would simply avoid using the system directly, and just ask our core users to pull the information they need. As a system built for small online shops, Unleashed knows that it needs to show value, and be useful to the decision-maker AND the users of the system, since these are often the same people in such small settings.

Likes Least

Very little (if anything) to complain about so far. Some sets of data (like adding new warehouses) are not as accessible as the others.

Recommendations

1. Find a balance between the easily measurable eval criteria (cost per month, number of integrations, etc.) and the hard-to-measure, gut-feel criteria ("Is this a system that everyone will *actually* use directly?"; "Will we need to make a lot of workarounds to adapt it to our workflows?"; "Will Customer Support provide useful advice, or are they going to try to fit the round peg through the square slot?"

2. Don't settle for the first software that you demo for yourself. Try out multiple systems, to understand the nuances, strengths and weaknesses of each.

I've been using Unleashed to manage the inventory of my independent record label & mailorder. I have mail fulfillment centers in Europe & the USA now, and UNL's multiple warehouse features make managing the inventory a snap. It's also extremely handy for managing consignment deals with distributors. When they order new product, I transfer the inventory to their warehouse. And then when they report sales each month, I create an invoice. What used to be tricky & a pain to manage is now simple & clean.

The most valuable tool in unleashed for us is the Bill of Materials and Assembly of products. We have 6-12 variable items that go into 1 product, from the variety of honey in a blend to the type of lid applied for a certain customer. The ability to change these is simple and the system is easy to use.
Response time is also extremely important to us and the support team at unleashed is fast and effective.

Likes Least

As with most types of software - my number 1 pet peeve is the when you are in a page and you hit the back button you are taken all the way back to the beginning of the process as opposed to the last page you were on.

Recommendations

Give it a go, software is hard to get your head around unless you have jumped on in and had a go.

This is a very comprehensive product combined with a user-friendly intuitive interface. We are a laboratory that does tests and research. Managing our inventory is normally a real pain, but unleashed has helped us control what we do. Since we're working with formula's, it was really hard to find a competitive product that could deal with multilayered BOMs. Unleashed exceeded our expectations. They also keep adding features which is great. Integration with Quickbooks is also very handy. Additionally their customer support is very fast and accurate with punctual follow up.

Cons

Nothing negative to mention based on the price/quality that is offered. I just hope they don't raise prices.

The inventory management (the core of the software) is great. It enables easy management of sales, purchases, and control of stock.

Cons

The manufacturing side of the software (bill of materials etc) is not good. You can't relate a BOM to a sales order or a customer when you print out the BOM to be manufactured. The reporting side of the software is not good either - it's hard to get stock reports that include assembled items.

Our experience interacting with the team at Unleashed has been great.

They tailored the onboarding presentation to what we needed, and their product knowledge was incredible. It inspires a lot of confidence to have a call where the person on the other end is able to field very specific questions with ease.

Cons

There have been a couple of challenges with the API. They are in no way deal-breakers, but my wishlist would include: Faster response times, more fields available (e.g. margin on a SalesOrder).

This is a superb application which helps you to manage your inventory effectively and efficiently. It allows you to track your stock details in real-time across different locations. It helps you in taking better data-driven business decisions. Its interface is very simple as well as supportive as one can operate it by using training resources. It allows you to prepare invoices without having stock in your system. It is one of the reliable applications I have ever seen and in addition, it is very easy to introduce it to new employees. It consists of numerous attributes. It gives you the full value of the money spent on it as its functionality is very good. It provides excellent management functionality. It is very quick and effective in its working. It also supports CRM (Customer Relationship Management).

Cons

This application is not so much flexible as its UI is very complex, overwhelming complexity, etc. It is not customizable which leads to the lack of functionality. It has some problems in adjusting dates as it is very difficult in real-time tracking of stock. Some users want this application to be integrated with Xero as well as US shipping integration like ship station, etc.

Support responds almost immediately.. that'ts about it, but they typically tell you "no we cannot do that" or here's a band aid fix that does not apply to your problem

-Cannot link customers/projects to purchases
-Cannot change a PO prefix (work around for the above problem)
-Cannot create a PO based on BOM or assembly item
-Over complicated setup and confusing process flow - whats the point in entering a supplier's price when you have to manually enter it in every time you re-up?!!
- Training videos have no sequence or flow to them, hard to find anything
- Once you complete a transaction it is in the system forever (unless you get someone to completely wipe your account. )
-No refunds, your pretty much stuck with it.
- Export CSV import CSV functions only work half the time
- Using 1 screen to use this software is nearly impossible, just to create a PO for an assembly item, you need to be able to see bill of materials and navigate to products then purchase price
- Does not integrate with Quickbook desktop
-Cannot track service items (maintenance)

Basically just a spreadsheet with a fancy UI, a lot of the features you'd think it would have do not exist...

My client has better control over inventory from all aspects - financial, logistics and management time.

Pros

My client and I enjoyed the ease of use, help and tutorials. The connectivity to other apps such as Xero and Shopify was critical in selecting Unleashed as SAAS. The Unleashed support is great, very helpful and responsive. The information available to the client now is streets ahead of pre-implementation phase and resulted in optimisation almost immediately.

Cons

Lacking some useful reports meaning users have to manipulate excel to derive information. However Unleashed support noted requests for various reports and have added these to late updates.

We can track stock and valuation.

Pros

Ease of setup and can make recipes and kits, can see stock in other warehouses. Training is easy on the application.

Cons

Can't go back and reverse errors and have to do lots of credits to correct errors. Could do with a report that give a total of invoice transactions rather that item total number.

I am the owner of a very small jewellery making business. I used to use excel spreadsheets to keep track of my inventory components, purchases and completed pieces. Moving across to Unleashed has encouraged me to improve my profit margins, sped up the quotation process and ensure that I have popular components on hand. Using Assemblies and Bills of Materials ensures that I am quoting at the most up-to-date prices. I also like being able to store images against inventory items. Finally, I love the integration with Xero.

Cons

The templates for invoices and sales can be cumbersome to use. Being able to move text elements and have them snap to a grid wold help (i know there have been some updates recently but I have not tried them yet, so this may be solved).

The system is super easy to use. Can perform all your usual stock related transactions.
Great for stock take. If you don't know how to do something or need a little direction, there are heaps of tutorials and Q & A sections to help work through any issues.
There are lots of reports that can be utilised and exported.
It's great that you can export data, add in what you need and then import it rather than manually updating each customer or item.

Cons

1. Cannot add two types of taxes i.e. WET and GST to one item.
2. When you click next page it remains at the bottom. It should go to top of page. Also the page numbers/next/previous options should be at the top of the page.

Being able to automatically open new windows for product information, real time stock on hand reports for different warehouses.

Cons

That you can purchase any product from any supplier.. even though that product has a default supplier against it. Very hard when we have 4000 products...when we are keying Purchases that there is nothing stopping someone from order it from the wrong supplier.

Multiple warehousing, accurate reports and inventory control.

Pros

The ability to see our stock holding over multiple warehousing was one of the reasons why we moved to Unleashed. It offer a huge range of features without the expense of going to large program. It integrates with our accounting program almost instantaneously. The reports are excellent. It has enabled us to determine our true cost of product with the ability to add charges such as freight. The onboard team and customer support is excellent.

Cons

The sales app for iphone is a great tool with one exception, this is the fact that all users are able to see the sell price of all customers. This has meant that our sales reps, who are not privvy to our reseller pricing, are able to see the price that our resellers are paying for product. This is not desirable nor acceptable to us and therefore we are still using another sales order system for the sales reps. If Unleashed were to modify the app so that we are able to limit the visibility of users of the app to only see those orders they have entered for their customers this would be an advantage and would mean we would be able to use the Unleashed sales app for all our sales team and we could cease using another system which isn't integrated with UL, those it would be more convenient and cost saving.

We use it for generating picking slips and invoices

Pros

Easy to use and we can import sales orders via CSV files from our customers design software.
We can easily duplicate products.
Like the new feature that allows special pricing for certain customers

Cons

1.More customer discount levels would be nice.

2.We do not use Unleashed for inventory control however it forces things on us like "Cannot make a product never diminishing" so you have extra steps involved when imputing orders.

Sales history and love "average landed cost" pricing. I like that more than one person can use the software on different computers.

Cons

Would love to have the feature that will advise if emails have failed to send/email is wrong. Xero has this feature and it is great but when emailing from unleashed, we never know if the email has gone through or bounced back and when we chase up outstanding accounts, clients advise us that they have never received the invoice in the first place. Please install this feature asap. About 2 years ago I sent in a submission for this feature and nothing has been done about it. When talking to support I wasn't the only one to ask.

Enables me to reach new accounts -- I couldn't meet the operational requirements of these high-volume online retail accounts without Unleashed's real time inventory management capabilities.

Enables me to accurately value my COGS and Stock on Hand

Greatly facilitates document management across Sales Quotes, Orders, Packing Lists, etc.

Supports my scalability requirements

Continuous feature and service upgrades

Cons

Warehouse management features still thin, more development needed

Lacking native EDI real-time document exchange
