MedSym experience

Pros

The software itself is robust and does "cover all the bases." I have also found the support staff to be very knowledgeable and friendly. Although the timeliness of their responses sometimes varies a bit, the quality of their support is consistently very solid, and it is a pleasure dealing with them.

Cons

I have found some meaningful use measures and functions to be a little cumbersome to execute, but part of this is due to my being relatively new to the product and having to meet meaningful use measures right away.

MedSym - Functional, Practical

Pros

The product was sufficient for medical office use, with various applications throughout the entire patient visit. However, after using a couple other softwares, I feel there are some functions or extras that Medsym could benefit from.

Cons

One feature that I felt could use improvement was the schedule format. I didn't like the way the schedule looked. If you compare with say, eClinicalWorks, I felt eCW's schedule looked nicer and was much easier to customize and view.

nurse manager, satellite location; practice clinical nurse educator

Pros

This is our first EMR; therefore, I have no comparison ability. The documentation is certainly faster with an electronic system. The ability to locate and process patient information quickly is a plus. The ease of patient symptom management with access to records is a plus. The onsite customer support with initiation was a positive experience.

Cons

First and most frustrating, there is no way to save a message sent. Whether it be a reply or an initiated conversation, once sent, there is no way to prove that the contact was ever made. Secondly, there is an inability to print a message received. There is no paper trail of messages; hence, proving accountability is nearly impossible. This can lead to human error of messages lost, forgotten, or ignored. Serious issues can fall through the cracks leading to an inferior outcome for the patient. Thirdly, in scheduling, there is no copy and paste option; consider the redundancy of scheduling a treatment which occurs as three weeks on and one week off. Copy and paste of infusion times would speed the process for anyone who schedules and does 15 other jobs to boot. Fourth, while nurses are both motivated and educated to intervene in symptom management, recording symptoms reported, calls received, follow up calls placed, actions taken, these are most often never recorded because there is no real time avenue for such documentation. For example, if a patient reports an adverse event two days after treatment, documentation occurs in the Nurse Notes of the date of treatment (with a time stamp indicating the real date and time). The nurse notes are largely ignored by doctors and nurses alike. Therefore, there is little or evidence that the patient actually received this intervention. There is so little to document and prove what benefit nurses provide in a practice, thus justifying our positions. Fifth, physicians have the capability of changing orders, notes, directions after they have sent them to the person responsible for carrying out the orders. This is an avenue for abuse of the staff, and the licenses they rely on to help them pay their bills. Finally, when a glitch occurs during a typical busy day filled with sick or demanding clientele, physicians who are trying to maximize income, ever shrinking staffing, having a response from a motivated yet completely uninformed person from another country as tech support while reading from a script is not in any way an acceptable solution.

Great Beginner's Software

Pros

There are number of things I liked about this software. I am able to see the schedule in a calendar format and scheduling appointment is only few steps away. The layout format is easy to read and find.

Cons

There are a number of problems with this software. First of all when responding to messages it does not save the receipt memo. There is no way to track accountability. Secondly there are not a lot of options to search patient database; it is only limited to name, don, ssn, etc. Thirdly, it does not allow switching between windows to see multiple things at the same time. One has to exit out of day schedule window to go back to home window. Connecting external peripheral such as an all in one printer scanner is a not easy. It does not allow users to go back and change certain settings.

This system is not very good

Pros

I don't really like anything about this system.

Cons

I have been waiting two years for them to fix referral and authorization issues. They are still not fixed. Referrals have to be linked to every office visit in order to pull, and hospital authorizations have to be hand entered on claims.
