Microsoft SQL Server BI Software

Microsoft SQL Server Business Intelligence (BI) Edition is a database management and BI software solution designed for companies of all sizes. The system offers relational database management, which allows users to access enterprise data using structured query language. The solution allows users to perform complex analysis on the database. The product also features a BI Semantic model that allows users to extract and analyze data from heterogeneous sources.

Microsoft SQL Server features “in-memory analytics,” which allows users to perform queries and analytics while the data is in the RAM, thereby improving the speed of access. The software has scalable and corporate reporting features that help management to make decisions that are more informed. Organizations can improve the data quality by using the organizational knowledge and third-party reference data providers to profile, clean, and match the data.

The IT department can manage data through a BI Semantic Model, which provides a consistent view across multiple data sources.

Pros

The Microsoft SQL server works perfectly well with the Sage Enterprise Resource Management (X3) software.

Cons

Sometimes the SQL server will get a random glitch that will cause an unwanted error. This sometimes messes with the X3 program too.

Build more Powerful models with SSAS in Visual Studio for improved performance. Better tools and easier (but not easy) for the novice.

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Product Quality

Customer Support

Value for Money

Really improved integration with other tools, especially Excel and Power BI. Also, somewhat more intuitive than more limited SSAS instances.

Pros

This is extremely useful software for data analytics and reporting, and the new interface with Microsoft Excel Power Pivot makes it much easier for a novice to pick up some useful tools. It's an especially nice product to set up a live connection with KPIs to Power BI which does not allow users to create KPIs independently.

Cons

Unless your data model is based on an organization server, modeling in SSAS will not help with much more than consolidating multiple sources into a single connection...in which case you either need to maintain a live connection or load into memory. So either keep your system running 24/7 triple your RAM.

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Pros

A very stable environment with clustering, replication, and everything you would expect from an enterprise level product.
Includes a huge number of tools for working with data including import, export, SSIS, SSMS, TSQL and more.
You can build your own custom modules that will integrate directly into the server.
Recent versions allow for installation on Linux.
There are user groups.

Cons

Not the most expensive, but still expensive, especially with free alternatives.
Some of the Microsoft nomenclature around TSQL can be annoying, such as square brackets.
Some features seem unnecessary and ponderous, like XML.

MS SQL Server Perfect Database Management Solution

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Product Quality

Customer Support

Value for Money

I would definitely recommend that you read the Windows administration book before you start exploring SQL server.

Pros

SQL server is a great database management product. This is a very fast and stable and at the same time cross-platform solution running on both Linux and Windows operating systems, the security of which is implemented at the highest level. It is also gratifying that SQL server works equally well on both physical and virtual servers, both on the ground and in the cloud. Since this product is produced by Microsoft, it integrates well with other products of this company, such as Power BI. This app can provide you with high availability and a wide selection of options available of your choice, though everything will depend on the edition. And most importantly, many features can be tested completely free using Developer Edition.

Cons

Although SQL server is easy to manage through the graphical user interface, but to understand how it works, to fix some problems you need to read a thick book, and even more than one and read ton of documentation. Does not have good monitoring tools out of the box. For some companies will not be a cheap solution.

My company is primarily a Microsoft shop, so why not MS BI. Our Govt. has an MOU with MS so we get all the tools and we are trained in most things MS so we are comfortable and satisfied with this product. Even our PeopleSoft solutions run on SQL Server.

Pros

1. Easy to use even by non-technical users
2. If you know what you are doing you can extend functionality and flexibility for almost anything you want
3. The above leads me to my next pro : stable IDE and flexible integration with SSAS

Cons

1. A common language to develop and make changes would be nice
2. Its expected that you are an excel expert - but then again who isn't
3. It uses a lot of hardware power - but we have the horses

A popular BI platform that makes the implementation of integrated BI services easy.

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Product Quality

Customer Support

Overall Microsoft SQL Server BI would have a solution for most requirements of a typical BI solution. The look & feel, as well as how the tool interacts with its users can be improved.

Pros

Microsoft SQL Server BI offers a full set of tools and functionalities for different phases of a BI solution. Since it is a very popular and widely being used, there are a lot of resources available.

Moreover, Microsoft provides tools and services that serves both the upper stream and lower stream of BI services, making the adoption of Microsoft SQL Server BI seamless on existing Microsoft infrastructures.

Cons

A lot of tools are not smart enough and requires intense manual work. For example, SSMS can't recognize and auto-pop newly-created tables/views without restarting; SSIS is not able to refresh the metadata on its own when there is underlying table changes; SSRS offers very limited format control for Excel/PDF export.
