Zenefits is a cloud-based human resources information system (HRIS) that features user dashboards, core human resources, benefits administration, onboarding and employee scheduling.

When new employees are hired, HR professionals using Zenefits only need to complete five online fields to begin the onboarding process. Employees sign all agreements online, and Zenefits can automatically process their information. When employees leave, HR can remove them from payroll and benefits and initiate COBRA setup with a single process. Zenefit also offers an employee self-service portal.

Zenefits can integrate with payroll, health insurance and other systems, and users can also set up new payroll, insurance, retirement plans and more. Zenefits has a development team that makes weekly changes based on user feedback. They also have a team of in-house HR, payroll and insurance specialists to answer questions via phone or email. Zenefits also provides mandatory services which must be purchased with the software.

Pros

With a solution like Zenefits, I have managed to reduce the HR budget year-over-year while going 100% paperless. The integration with our applicant tracking system allows me to push data seamlessly from my mobile device directly to Zenefits to extend an offer, wherever, whenever. I am no longer chained to the constraints of my desk, which is critical for an HR team of one.

Easily the most comprehensive solution in the market (at this price point) that addresses onboarding/offboarding, automated and customized email triggers to employees, time and attendance, insurance, aca compliance, reporting (standard and custom) and a multitude of integrations. Since becoming a client over 2 years ago, I have gone to market year-over-year, and haven't found a solution that is comparable. Zenefits kills the busy work and allows me to dedicate time to our employees and driving meaningful initiatives, restructuring the experience with HR to being a partnership versus an administrative burden.

Cons

I wish the performance management module was baked into the subscription versus an add-on cost.

The transition to a new brokerage, OneDigital, has come with its challenges, but I appreciate that the leadership teams both with Zenefits and OneDigital have been willing to personally speak with me to determine how gaps can be bridged to improve my experience as the employer.

Customer service has been great so far, which is always helpful. The person who sold me on the software was very knowledgeable and wonderful to work with.

Pros

Ease of use and pricing are great! I looked at several other companies, and this was the best value in terms of product and cost.

Cons

Setup was a little lengthy. In the future it would be great if there were a checklist in one place where I could see how I’m doing in terms of setup completion.

Employees seem to like the mobile apps too for clocking out.

Pros

Makes payroll + benefits a breeze. Onboarding is really nice as well. Really enjoy zenefits relative to old our HR software.

Cons

Sometimes can be a little bit slow. Mobile app (Android on Galaxy s9+ ) crashes when trying to log hours for some employees. iOS is better.

Pros

Nothing that any other HR product doesn't already have. The are no options on Zenefits that I would recommend.

Cons

Horrific customer support! You can't get an answer from anyone on any subject. Their chats tell you to watch their basic specific videos, the call center puts you on hold for a minimum of 25 minutes and then you still don't get a resolution. Emails don't get answered either. So basically there is no customer support. I have about 5 unanswered questions with support right now and I am not expecting to get one.

Zenefits payroll is very bulky. It is also limited and lacks functionality.

Zenefits is pretty low-tech masquerading as some high tech Payroll software. There's nothing that high tech about them and just about every person on the customer service side lacks basic knowledge of its functionality. It is a lot more confusing than Gusto and is nothing more than a series of modules built on Django, Javascript and jQuery with very basic databases that run on cron jobs.

I can live with the product that Zenefits has despite all of its shortcomings but the people behind it need much better training. Their fake enthusiasm coupled with little to no knowledge of the platform, hr, or payroll is a huge turn off.

Pros

Time & Attendance: Users are able to seamlessly clock in and out from their phones once they get familiar with Zenefits.
PTO: PTO is simple and streamlined.

Cons

Customer Service: The chat agents are a waste of time to talk to. The phone agents know very little but can at least put you on hold, ask their supervisor and learn as they go along.
Pay Runs are akward but here is the process:

1. You need to approve your employees timesheets.
2. Timesheets need to be pushed to payroll. This requires some time. Looks like its set up on a cron job so if you just missed it you need to wait a few minutes for it to get pushed.
3. From there you add the deductions and reimbursements. If you don't have the types set up, you'll need to step away and set them up. There's no memo you can input once you add a deduction. For example, if its an employee purchase it doesn't allow you to describe what was purchased.
4. You approve the pay run, push it through and wait for confirmation. Another cron job most likely.

PTO Policy is there but since its so easy to do, its subject to a lot of abuse.

You cannot reimburse an employee in net earnings. The functionality just isn't there.

You need to select whether employees clock in through an iPad or their phones. You can't mix and match.

The app for an administrator is absolutely useless. There's not much you can do as an admin from your phone.

Navigating is bulky. Instead of selecting your employee and seamlessly flowing through everything that relates to them, you need to first pick which module you want to use and toggle back and forth between modules.

Zenefits is a great value for the money, and when it comes to negotiating prices they truly want to ensure their customer is happy. I've been really happy with the system and am glad to see they are enhancing things like their Benefits and Rehire features. It's a good thing!

Pros

Zenefits takes next to no time to learn--it's extremely intuitive and takes a lot of the guesswork out of communicating new processes to employees. I like how you can easily customize fields to get the data you want for each person, and how simple it is to update time off balances and requests for employees. It didn't take me long to get up and running with this system which was huge--our company is growing too fast for me to need 6 months to learn the HRIS. Also, benefit enrollment is stupidly easy for employees, I get barely any questions.

Cons

This software could improve on their reporting capabilities--but that's honestly what I would expect for a platform designed for small- to mid-sized organizations. For instance, their pre-built reports are great (turnover, headcount, etc.) but you can't add just one more field to them if you want it. Little thing but makes a difference if your manager wants to see something more specific.

We hired a new finance director, an older male, and he is very much old school and didn't see the benefit. Whereas, the previous younger female director thought it was valuable for keeping her priorities straight.

Pros

No hand-holding by HR as far as completing documentation for new hires (onboarding). Employees are responsible for submitting their documents via their personal log-in.

Cons

Makes the onboarding process very impersonal. I had an issue downloading old payroll stubs (for an important loan) and needed a separate password. Our finance/HR person was out of the office and I had no support form Zenefits.

If you are looking for an HR system this is the best way to go. I just love them. Keep it up and bring the system to SA.

Pros

I have been exploring Zenefits and it is amazing. The people management service does what they say it does, or better more it does more than that. The level of service from their customer service is outstanding. They follow up to make sure that their clients are happy or if they need help.

Cons

The cons are that when you are building the profile and you don't finish it after 30 days it gets deleted. Although that is the case you get notifications to remind you to finish it. Another con is that it is not yet available in some countries like SA.

The platform itself is incredibly easy to use. The time off feature was extremely valuable and appreciated by employees. Open Enrollment via the platform was easy for the employee and running reports was incredibly efficient. Overall, the platform was well made and well managed.

Cons

The payroll "integration" was never accurate so we couldn't rely on it. The service that Zenefits provided, from a Customer Service standpoint, was unreliable. We always had issues, whether it be random deletion of employees from our benefits, adding dependents randomly to our benefits, an agent assuring us something was taken care of and finding it was not, being provided incorrect info, taking long periods of time to correct errors, getting different answers from different reps, etc..., we could not rely on their service. We had to duplicate our efforts so frequently that the "automated" service Zenefits provided was irrelevant. Also, while the data migration was provided in a bulk download, we were missing documents and had to reactivate our account multiple times to retrieve missing documents. Nowadays, local insurance brokers are providing robust services with Open Enrollment platforms that integrate with most systems - Zenefits and the headache of their customer service doesn't provide value any longer.

As a start-up, it was the assumption that we would outsource HR and Payroll because of the administrative overhead, complexity with compliance, and trying to offer a variety of plans to meet individual employees needs combined with the costs of benefits and their administration. The benefits of the zenefits solution are clear in the ability from the onset in onboarding to offer employee self-service, which allows employees to make informed decisions, actively manage their accounts. There is a significant depth of add-on modules to grow with organizations' complexity and expand into comprehensive HR solutions in managing performance. There is an extensive tutorial library of salient human capital related content to better engage with employees throughout the lifecycle.

Cons

We're new into the evaluation so it will take some time to come up to speed on the breadth, depth of full capabilities - including integration with other systems in the future. Right now, it suits a start-up to get up and running on a full onboarding experience with comprehensive benefits and has the capacity to scale as we grow.

Great! I love the ease of use. I also like that they have many oppourtuntity to learn more about the software and other HR topics through training sessions and seminars.

Pros

I liked how user-friendly the software is to use. When onboarding new staff, the Zenefits software walks the new hire through all of the steps in an easy and intuative way. It also cuts down on the amount of emails and calls it takes to hire remote staff. I also like that it is a more secure way for remote hires to share sensative information like banking and soical securtiy numbers.

Cons

The software isn't compatable with our payroll or insurance benefits. It would be nice to have all of that in one place but that is not possible for us right now.

Overall, Zenefits has been good for us mainly with the benefits administration. We have enjoyed getting good rates and our employees like the user friendly benefits open enrollment process.

Pros

I like Zenefits because it is an HRIS system and benefits portal all in one. Zenefits makes it very easy to manage our employees and manage their benefits enrollment. We also love that Zenefits help with the third party Combra Complete to help with Cobra coverage.

Cons

It would be nice if Zenefits had a little more features to aid in employee training and more user friendly reports.

We use this at our company to manage benefits, payroll, time off, etc.

Pros

Zenefits has a clean and simple user interface. It provides an easy place to track your time off, register for time off, manage health benefits, access important payroll information and manage just about everything related to your work. I love how responsive it is, that there is a mobile application that is streamlined, and how you don't require hackneyed, inefficient platforms that separate one part of HR management from another.

Cons

Nothing. Compared to custom benefits platforms or other HR implementations similar to this, none hold a candle to Zenefits.

- Must contact customer service for minor changes (ie. employee address, plan names)
- Not notified if employees update info (ie. tax withholding, qualifying event changes, etc.)
- Employees are weekly complaining about the TimeKeeper system
- I wish they would give the administrators more controll!

We have been with Zenefits for a little over a year. Before then, we kept track of employee time off with paper sheets submitted to accounting, then a master spreadsheet of all employee time off. I like Zenefits better because it's easier to keep track of comp time, and easier for employees to request time off and keep track of their balances. I also have it syncing to a Google calendar so everyone can see who is out of the office. Their new one-on-one meetings part of the software is something we will explore next.

Cons

There's not much I don't like, in fact, we need to take more advantage of what we are paying for.

Out main goal was to find a program that employees would appreciate, and would not feel stodgy or outdated.

Pros

After testing a lot of ht platforms Zenefits has one of the best interfaces. Employees find it easy to find what they are looking for very quickly.

Cons

It can be inflexible at times, while trying to "help" you along. Sometimes you want to enter information, but it wants you to do it a very specific way.

Great until this past year. Not only to the software loose functionality they charged us for services we never utilized and couldn't utilize.

Pros

We were huge fans of Zenefits up until this year. They handled our onboarding, health insurance, and synced with our payroll

Cons

The changes to drop supporting 3rd party health care providers and the inability to create an other income box for special tax designations left us having to cancel the service.

so far so good this is our first HRIS system and it is working well. We cover a large area and often need access to employee file and or qualification and Zenefits meets the needs. Plus it reminds manager and employees when qualification need to be renewed

Listen, I'd still recommend them. I use the app almost daily, I log on at least a few times a week. It's a necessary tool in our belt and I'd be sad to lose them.

Pros

Ok, so it's great that Zenefits centralizes all of your HR needs into one system. It's certainly easier than logging into individual insurance sites. I like that the app loads quickly and can quickly give me info on my commuter benefits balance or show me my insurance info. It's also very easy to log personal days. And it's nice seeing the structure of the company within the website -- it's great for transparency.

Cons

Sometimes the zenefits team can't answer your question -- especially when it comes to insurance brouhaha. I nearly had a meltdown this past summer when my insurance company INSISTED I wasn't covered, but zenefits insisted that I was. No one would speak to each other, and only after a month of emails and calls was it ironed out. I can't say that this is zenefits' fault -- but it was annoying how deeply unhelpful they were.

It has not been perfect from over five years ago, I cannot lie but they have in the last three years brought it to a whole new level and stepped it up beyond time after time.

Pros

It is the happy balance with an EXTRA kick. It is HR, Payroll, Time and Attendance, Scheduling, Documents, onboarding and so much more. I don't​ even know how people do it without zenefits, must have been horrific.

Cons

Waiting for them to write the amazing new technology that is coming. This is a personal issue of patience. There are tons of features always being updated or available like schedule​ which not only is amazing and all in one for ease of use by staff but also free!

Love it!

Pros

I love how incredibly easy to request, check, and cancel time off requests and sick time. It gives you a running total of available time off and if you request time off in the future, it tells you how much time you'll have at that time and what will be available. Everything is easily and comfortable displayed. The learning curve was tiny.

Cons

I am having a hard time finding something I don't like!
