Bloomerang Software


 

Created in 2012, Bloomerang is a solution for small and growing nonprofits. It enables users to view an organization's donor records, track the best time to contact each donor and measure a donor's engagement level to make it easier for users to know when someone should be contacted.

This proactive approach can help simplify maintaining and increasing donor loyalty, as well as revenue. 

Donor retention rates can be accessed at a glance from the Donor Retention Cockpit, where each donor has a profile of their giving summary. Engagement levels are ranked by “cold”, "cool", "warm" and “hot.” 

Bloomerang is a cloud-based system and allows for unlimited users. The system is a particularly good fit for small to mid-sized nonprofits in a handful of verticals, including animal welfare, faith-based organizations, and human services.

Bloomerang was a Startup of the Year finalist for the TechPoint Mira Awards.

Overall, would highly recommend Bloomerang. We are moving to a more donor-centric model and Bloomerang has all the bells and whistles to make your job as a fundraiser much easier and everything is nicely located in one place and available anywhere you have internet access.

Pros

Easy to use and a lot of functionality. The conversion staff were great to work with. Glad we made the switch to Bloomerang.

Cons

Wish there was a way to handle seating for events. Also, we have many acknowledgement letters and I wish there was a way to make individual changes to a batch of letters. That is not the case. The letters are produced in PDF form.

Loved using this software!

Pros

This system keeps everything organized perfectly for multiple employees working together! You can print out reports for meetings or physical filings. You can log when a donor was contacted and add details to notes. You can send emails from this system and even collect online donations without extra cost! It cost at least 1/3 less than some of the other leading companies, and they have the BEST customer service any company could ask for.

Cons

The email system is a bit basic and doing reports can get a bit tricky. Customer service is not 24/7.

The consolidation or processing of gifts / Groups / donors by lot / Classification is not possible, it is very manual or individual. there is a considerable difference between the actions you can do in the web environment and the mobile app .. THE COST !! .. Compared with others, the cost is decisive. Especially because we are talking about non-profit organizations / campaigns ..

Bloomerang has the best customer service around, so if you have any issues, you can always rely on someone super helpful to give you a hand. The layout is fairly simple, and easy for a novice to learn how to navigate. The type of reports you can run are endless and can print out any numbers or names you're looking for.

Cons

The email and letter feature could be a bit better, though they may have improved this since I've used it. It is very basic.

Do not buy it if you use Quickbooks, it will be more work than it is worth!

Pros

They have nice customer service people. That is the only thing that was good about them. Oh, I guess they have good salesmen...

Cons

They promise that it will function a certain way and it will not. The way you set up reports is completely backwards. You can't keep couples together, they have to be separate. You can't make the reports they said you could. It is not compatible with Quickbooks, unless you add the same account numbers for every single person. Who has time for that? Also, after all the data entry we did, to not be able to use it, is ridiculous! What a waste of a non-profits.

When it comes to integration, the ability to connect to virtually any website content management system has become a market standard. Bloomerang meets this standard, and does so seamlessly.

Pros

Bloomerang's timeline feature is extremely helpful. I can easily see a donor's entire history of engagement with the organization!

Cons

Bloomerang is somewhat expensive compared to other databases on the market that offer essentially the same thing. I like what I get, but sometimes I wonder if I could be getting a better price from a difference business.

I researched CRM software options extensively last year. Started with over 40 options and narrowed it down one by one to Bloomerang. I have been so, so happy with my decision. A great company!

Pros

Price! You get so much for such a low price.
Easy to use--volunteers without training have been successfully helping me with entry.
Customer Service- phone support worth EVERY penny. They are so knowledgable and patient and always calm, polite and respectful. I LOVE them!
Our auditor was impresses with what I could do with Bloomerang!

Cons

I really can't think of any real cons. I really want a shopping cart feature but no one has that option so I can't complain.

I am a long time user of this product, and I would totally recommend this product to anyone considering switching or even the first time donor database user. This product has features that will help the seasoned non-profit and the start-up alike.

Pros

- Its integrated with other 3rd party products
- I can easily incorporate a number of things (through code snippets generated from by the Bloomrang database) directly into my website
- Good and responsive customer service
- I like the initial sign-in dashboard

Cons

- I wish there were a more granular control of users ability to see different parts of the database (i.e., donations, anonymous gifts, etc..)
- It's great that there are so many options, but it would be great to "disable" certain features I don't use
- I wish the task aspect had more features

Pros

Report are easily run so you can really dig into your data... and if you need help, its only a chat away. Engagement score and highlights on the timeline let you know at a glance important info about your donors ! Online form integration is great and its very easy to customize.

Cons

Needs more flexibility in creating and editing thank you/recipet letters. Still have to export and mail merge to get a custom font and wording.

Bloomerang is the easiest to use, and includes features that are based on what fundraisers really need -- not all the random extras that seem cool but are just useless clutter. Imports are easy, reports are easy, even acknowledgement letters are easy and integrated. Software updates are automatic and seamless, so you never have to mess with them or risk being out of date. The customer support can't be beat. I've transitioned two organizations to Bloomerang, and will hopefully be transferring a third within the year!

Cons

The only thing I'd love to see change is for acknowledgement letters to be exported in Word format instead of only PDF. That said, even the PDF is highly customizable before it exports, so it's a teeny tiny itsy bitsy problem.

There are not a lot of pros to this extremely simple and basic software. As a small nonprofit just starting out, we thought kind of database would be useful, but it has such limited capability and is not user-friendly at all. There are much better products out there with much more capability and donation and social media integration.

Cons

Our experience with this company has been extremely negative and has caused a lot of stress and problem where it was not needed. While they provide adequate online support, as a 20-year advancement professional who has used many CRMs, this software and its capability is very limited. Our account manager and the CEO have also proven to be inflexible and unkind.  

We received our renewal invoice 26 days before it was due after discovering Bloomerang was sending the renewal invoice to an employee of ours that left 3 years ago. As a result, we asked for a waiver for the 45-day cancellation clause because of the circumstances. We are a small non-profit and they would not even talk with us. After myself and my colleagues called 7 times to get some answers, I sent a contract cancellation letter outlining the lack of customer service by not paying attention to this matter. We were not happy that it took almost a week for someone to even call us back and that was because I wanted to cancel my service. They would not even discuss a resolution with us and were happy to seek legal action if necessary.
We have canceled our contract but not after having to pay for a full year and on top of that Bloomerang had the nerve to charge a service fee because we canceled out auto-renew. As a small non-profit that helps alleviate blindness in the world, that actuates to 103 people we could have given sight to. They absolutely do not conduct good business and I will never use or recommend this company to anyone.

Only worth it if you can't afford something better

It's relatively easy to use out of the box. It's not very customize-able, which is a good thing if you are new to databases and a frustrating thing if you need the software to do anything beyond the very basics. And you can get a 1-year license through Tech Soup if you're a nonprofit. That's the biggest plus.

Cons

I've spoken with folks at Bloomerang, and find them incredibly inflexible and unhelpful when it comes to taking customer feedback. They have a product that only works for the most basic kind of record keeping. For example, we used it with a client that works exclusively with LGBTQ folks, and there was no way to alter the gender options. They also REFUSE to create an integration for QuickBooks Online, opting to only integrate with a GL software called Aplos, which is used by very few nonprofits.

Actually, most concerning is probably that they only offer two levels of permissions. When I asked if they were working on this, the response was that they were "tracking which additional user permission settings customers need". This company is not new though, so I really suspect they don't actually care about working on this.

I found Bloomerang frustrating at basically every level in trying to customize its offerings and shape it to work for our client. I think they are switching to a new database next year, in part because of the gender weirdness and in part because it's just not a great database for a growing organization.

You’ll be happy to know that we are actively building a QuickBooks Online integration. We’ve also added a third user permission as of 3/26/18 that will allow only certain users to add, edit, and delete transactions, and are actively building more!

I’d love to know more about your ideas for how we can improve the gender options in Bloomerang. We’re sensitive to this (it’s why we’ve done things like adding the honorific “Mx” as an option).

As someone who has only been using the product since November, I really enjoy the ease of use. I recieved very little formal training, but was able to figure out most of what I needed and if ever I had a question, the online chat helped!

Cons

I would love a way to run a list to see all the emails that have bounced, instead of looking at each individual report, or if the system would label the email as BAD email if it gets an error notice.

Pros

The application is intuitive to learn and easy to use. It has made our data management processes more efficient. The communications opportunities (integrated email, newsletters and letters have enabled us to connect with our donors in a more timely manner. The application is great but the people are amazing. The training is easy to access and the support has helped us discover best practices for the system.

We've been able to adjust/increase our "asks" due to the information the Wealth Screen provides, and the ease of the donation timeline that shows giving history quickly and efficiently. We can better identify donors who have lapsed, or may be on that track, and work to retain them. I'm excited to further explore and utilize the donor survey feature.

Pros

Bloomerang is extremely user-friendly. Even the functions that are a little more involved come with excellent instructions/video tutorials.

Cons

When downloading acknowledgment letters, I wish there was an option to download as a Word Document vs. a PDF. Sometimes quick edits would be easier to fix that way. But still, love this program.

Cons

The system for entering tributes is too complicated. There should be a way to keep notificants with a tribute where we can actually pull them into letters and emails, and a search function in the tributes list that makes for an easier way to find certain names.

Bloomerang has been great to get our very small organization so it can track its donors and follow up with those who haven't given. The acknowledgement features are great and easy to use/report on.

Pros

The price and the ease of use to get it set up and enter information. The reporting mechanism is very simplistic and easy to use.

Cons

It appears you have to know HTML to create landing/custom giving pages. The Head of Household feature is still a bit confusing and awkward.

Pros

I really like Bloomerang! We have used this donor software since the inception of our non profit. It meets our needs. I love how they continuously enhance the features based on feedback from the users. We are able to communicate with our donors, volunteers, and others in a professional user friendly way. This is definitely an efficient system at a very affordable cost for us.

Cons

I would love to see some new features like hovering over a posted item to see detail without having to click into it.

It has been great to work with. The biggest thing is the ease of use. I have had two new staff join since we got it, and rather than sending them to extensive/expensive training, with minimal training on my end, they have not just figured it out, but learned new ways of using it. Super cool!

Pros

The ease of looking up constituents and the dashboard that shows you their gifts over the past 10 years. Reports are easy to pull, and if you are having trouble, help is easy to find. I really appreciate the grant tracking system that was added.

Cons

I with we could put constituent fields on a transaction report and visa-versa.

Bloomerang is great! I'm new to the database world, and it has been easy to learn with all the free training resources. Overall, I feel that the software is intuitive and easy to use. In my experience, their customer support people are always patient, polite and very helpful. I would highly recommend Bloomerang!

Cons

There is only one thing that I have so far encountered that I'm not crazy about with Bloomerang. I would like to be able to change the address fields that are downloaded from the Letters feature. It will only download the name and address fields (envelope name, street, city, state, zip code), and it is not possible to edit that to add an extra field for a business name.

This software made our donor data simple to access, sort and report on. My job of finding information has been simplified, and allows for more accurate reporting. Customer Service is A+++

We are able to track our membership and engagement so much more accurately using Bloomerang. It has lead to renewals and larger donations.

Pros

Very intuitive and doesn't require much tinkering to figure it out. When there are things that you want to dig a little deeper into, they have numerous articles/videos ready to walk you through whatever you are looking to do. When you can't find the article/video that solves your question, the Bloomerang team is very quick to respond and very thorough with their guidance. They even reply back when you still can't quite figure it out :)

Cons

I wish the email templates were a little more customizable but its a minor thing for how great everything else is.

Overall Bloomerang has brought so much organization to us. We are a small grassroots nonprofit that only has one staff person and several volunteers. Having a safe central place with all the information we need is huge. I know there is a lot more that this program can do that we have not even begun to tap into, but so far it has really improved how we serve donors.

Pros

This software is extremely easy to use! I love that it is cloud based so I can access from anywhere. I love that you can set up different forms for different things. I also think the customer service is top notch. I probably use the live chat once a week with help in creating reports and they are always quick and super helpful!

Cons

One thing we would really benefit from is having sub funds. There are appeals and campaigns, but we have things that are regular monthly designations that are under specific funds. For ex. We work in Sierra Leone so that is the name of the fund people select, but then under that it would be helpful for them to have the options of school sponsor, orphan sponsor, general, etc. I also think the EFT option for donors would be good. Many want to avoid the fees.

Choosing Bloomerang for our donor database immediately made my work so much easier. No more worrying about where to store donor information, plus it's easily retrievable.

Cons

Most of the time entering and pulling out data is intuitive but when it's not, the customer service team is always helpful.
