Redmine is an open-source cloud-based project management solution based on the Ruby on Rails programming framework. It is a cross-platform and cross-database solution and allows users to manage multiple projects within the system. Administrators can allocate each user to have different roles on each project. The issue management system allows users to define the status of each issue and they can set the priority on a need basis.

Best Project Tracker/Management/Team Tool bar none

Excellent project/tracker management - faster execution of projects

Pros

You can get the bare bones redmine up and running in minutes using a bitnami stack. Out of the box it's built for speed and simplicity, but if you are prepared to put some minimal effort in to add plugins, you can add many features, all free, that take it to the next level.

Cons

The barebones version leads many (reviewers on this site included) to think that's all there is. It's built to be modular and extensible, so if you don't like the UI, you can simply add themes, if you want it to do additional stuff like tight email integration, agile (yes there are multiple free versions), helpdesk, Work Breakdown Structures, Charts, fully customized menu bar, repositories, Vault, Excellent Wiki, integrations to Slack and other ticket systems etc - you can do all of that. But because people see versions of Jira or Service Now running with more features (both of which require much more knowledge and effort), they think that redmine is underpowered. So imho that would be my main issue - it's reputation regarding functionality and security - both unfounded.

Versatility = Redmine as Bug Tracker/Project Manager

Redmine is my de-facto BTS every company I go. I am very happy with its stability, versatility and easy to use for the end user.

Pros

Redmine is a powerful Bug tracker system with such a flexibility that you can use it as your CMS if you want. There is a ton of plugins to install. You can use Redmine as a CRM, ERP, Payroll, etc... as long as the community around it can imagine a use case, it will exist. There are some paid services which customize Redmine to run as a full ERP, but I have no experience with them.

Cons

The installation process can be a pain for novices: You have to prepare your VM installing Ruby, then Ruby Gems and others gems to make advances functions to work. The source control system interface is good, but hard to install and configure. You will have better luck if you download a Bitnami VM or an AWS Appliance Image. There is a Docker image as wall, but I have no experience with it.

Reasons for Choosing Redmine

Better look & feel than Bugzilla. Easier to configure than MantisBT. Open source

It's good but old

Some years ago, maybe this software was great, not it's a bit old and hard to use compared to the compoetence

You can manage a lot of projets It's GNU/GPL (open source) Capacity to track versions A lot of customizations for all tickets

Cons

Nowadays the design is a bit obsolete A bit slow on big projects Hard to manage tickets (filter is old school components)

Good If You Can Customize

We installed Redmine on our own servers and customized it a bit to meet our needs. The fact that it is so customizable is great (we were able to have the perfect tool). The fact that it needed to be customized wasn't so great (we spent time building a tool instead of other things). Overall, I think this is a tool that has so much potential, and if you can afford to spend a little bit of time customizing it, there's nothing it can't do.

Pros

It's written in Ruby and is highly customizable.

Cons

It was missing some of the core features I was looking for in this type of tool, and I had to develop them myself.

Good ticketing software

Easy to use and configure task management system.

Pros

Redmine is clear and simple, it's similar to JIRA. It works stably without errors. We use it to follow our projects and tasks. We can easily track and report people's efforts. We can manage our documents without the need for a separate tool. Nice to be open source.

Cons

User interface design does not feel very professional. Useful plugins can be added to further improve the product.
