high powered professional video editing software... for free!

I enjoyed using DaVinci Resolve, although at this point I have decided to move back to Final Cut Pro as I am more familiar with the software and interface. DaVinci resolved has allowed me to create high quality videos for free which was a necessity as my budget did not allow for the purchase of Final Cut Pro for some time. I use the software to make YouTube videos, Instagram reels and other forms of social media video content as well as filming eCourses.

PROS

The best thing about DaVinci Resolve is that it is a free software. It is extremely rare to find such a powerful professional grade software available for free. It is worth noting that not all features are available in the free version, although essentially every necessity is available. This is not iMove or Windows Movie Maker. This is actual world class editing software available for you to download today. There is a significant learning curve though, so if you are already used to another software, the time investment to learn a new software may not be worth your while. i.e, if you will easily use up over $299 of your time to learn this software in a basic way, so if you're already a master at Final Cut Pro, it would make more sense to pay the $299 to purchase it.

CONS

In general, there are not many cons to this software. It has everything I could ever think of needing to make high quality video edits and much more than I'd ever use. The learning curve is probably the most difficult thing about using this software. It isn't as user friendly as Final Cut Pro, for example, but if one takes the time to do the necessary tutorials or takes a course, they will overcome that difficulty in due time.

Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve

Ultimately the free price tag was what prompted me to choose Resolve. It's a great option for newbies or people who need a cheap solution for their business.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

I learned FCP in college. I did not have the budget to purchase it as a business expense, so I utilized the free version of DaVinci Resolve. FCP is still my personal preference, but Resolve is an excellent option overall that I'm sure I'd have no issue with using had I learned and practiced with it as much as I have with FCP

DaVinci Resolve: The Next Industry Standard

I have been unhappy with Final Cut Pro and (especially) Premiere, so I was shocked when I downloaded DaVinci Resolve and it was so powerful! And the Fairlight audio editor is light years beyond anything else in the industry, offering full multitrack mixing, output busses, and more. I cannot recommend this software enough.

PROS

Firstly, the free version of DaVinci Resolve is so good, I would wager most amateur video editors would never need to upgrade to the Studio version. It's shocking that BlackMagic gives away an editor this good for free, and I would be surprised if DaVinci Resolve does not replace Adobe Premiere in the next 5-10 years.

CONS

DaVinci Resolve has some quirks that take getting used to, especially when it comes to the animation workflow. This is a confusing interface where you hook up nodes in a nebulous flowchart that just does not make sense to a newcomer.

Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve

Gives me all the features for free.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

Adobe Premiere is simply an outdated, buggy program, and Apple Final Cut Pro can be confusing and tedious to use (despite its optimization). DaVinci Resolve just works.

Davinci's a powerful program that can edit in 8k, but do you need all that?

It's a tough sell for me being a "weekend warrior" with a lot of other "non editing" stuff to do as it takes time to learn as well as the actual editing.

PROS

I like that even in the free version you can edit in a resolution that most people don't even have in their living room. The 30k or whatever the paid version has was overkill for me but the color correction alone practically pays for itself because it will fix any kind of lighting mistake and i mean any. Next best thing are the graphics and sound effects which are far superior to anything else on the market.

CONS

I found it has a steep learning curve if you haven't been around for the previous 16 to 17 versions. Even the tutorials need tutorials, its ridiculous!

Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve

I wanted the power of creating a flashy promo in high def.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

I wanted more action in my promos, the graphics are what sold me and are also what frustrate me to know end when my computer bogs down.

The Best Free Video Ediing Tool

Absolutely love it. I use it in editing all the videos I post on Youtube and the quality is very impressive

PROS

Easy and excellent video editing tools Fusion is amazing for creating different effects The free version is far better than many other paid video editing software available online I also like that I can download it on my system and access it anytime without an internet connection Export as mov , mp4 or even to youtube direct should you want

CONS

It is quite heavy, and can consume your system resource. Takes a bit of getting used to as a result of the many functions and tools. So you will need to take a couple of hours to learn how to use the software.

Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve

There were more tutorials online on how to use davinci It had more features and was a complete solution for what I wanted to achieve.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

Better features and tools. Far more professional to use.

From small to big, an essential tool for the media creator.

I use it to integrate VFX and 3D CGI for small shorts, but some times I had to create medium length media and it's also a pleasure to work for these projects. Also in art schools I like teaching this software because it makes students feel like they progress fast on their creative solutions. It is not a class of teaching the tool, but a class of using a tool for media creation. Which is something that you cannot say of other software.

PROS

I really love how DaVinci is able to accommodate all kind of projects and workflows. Having professional-grade software ranging from free to full-paid with advanced options is a killer. This is very useful as the software to go for schools and students. And it can get as big as needed. The learning curve for newcomers is very fast, and I have only had some trouble trying to explain how a project media library differs from what you see at the OS file level. But nothing wrong or bad with it.

CONS

I think the interface may seem to be complex when you see it the first time, but the tutorials that come in the documentation make this barrier to disappear fast.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

I like the way DaVinci makes this tooling really accessible for my students and hobbists.

A great alternative to Adobe Premiere

I decided to switch, just tired of a never-ending subscription model. I use this to edit video promos for my photography and it's handling of still images is great. I also edited a short film on it and I was amazed at how easy it was to manage video files and work without the constant crashes from the other software I used.

PROS

I have switched to DaVinci only because of Adobe's annoying subscription model. Knowing that, I must tell you the interface is about the same, the power is about the same, and it will use the RED codec natively. Time line layout familiar, and it was an easy switch over. The software doesn't crash once per editing session like the other, more expensive products in existence.

CONS

Not a lot to dislike here. It's powerful, and I was up to speed in a few hours.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

Just as powerful, without the subscription model. One small fee (or free if you go with the base software) and you own the software.

CONS

Syncing videos and audio is a headache. Also relinking clips and other files after moving them in your computer is kind of annoying. Lastly it requires a great transition if you are a long-term Adobe Premiere Pro user.

Software that works, with the user at the center

After trying several tools, I landed on Resolve and have not been sorry. Although any NLE presents a learning curve, Resolve is thoughtfully designed for effective all-day use. Its interface is pleasant and its tools powerful.

PROS

Resolve makes editing fast, with powerful keyboard shortcuts and multi-monitor layout. The inclusion of audio editing makes this a complete tool for video editing and production.

CONS

Resolve is generally more demanding of hardware than Adobe's editor, so cheaper computers may struggle.

Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve

The starter version, a very robust suite, is free. I also own Premiere Pro but find its interface difficult.

On the free version you lack a few features, but even on that version, in comparison to other things like Imovie or somethingm its night or day. A bit of a learning curve, given that there is so much to it, but worth the time it takes to learn it!

CONS

Love - Hate with DaVinci

In spite of all the hangups, I love DaVinci resolve. It really pops when it gets going. The learning curve especially for subs like fusion can be very steep, but regardless, it's an excellent product.

PROS

It really is a full feature app with every conceivable video editing tool. But it's also power hungry and crashed way to often if the system specifications are anything but perfect.

CONS

Crashes so often once conditions aren't ideal. Stability is a major issue with DaVinci resolve.

Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve

One time pricing and of course the free version which allows so much elbow room for all hit the most complex editing projects.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

Davinci's free version is as robust as premiere pro. Let alone the full version.

it does half the work for you before you even start

For a startup project with sometimes unreliable cashflow, it helps to have resources we can access for free but still deliver excellent results. And that is what DaVinci has been to us. Courtesy Resolve, I was able to quickly learn video editing and production. A skill which now allows me to produce our success story videos and partner engagement video content. Often from videos shot with poor cameras, but with Resolve, the finished product is always beautiful.

PROS

my personal favorite is the wide ranging LUTs available for use, even in the free version. With these freely accessible presets, I save a whole lot of time from not having to do the all the tweaking and adjustments manually. Additionally, I can make changes to existing presets and customize them to my own preferences.

CONS

What I dislike about Resolve is that the audio mixing and mastering features are quite limited. So I always had to do the audio separate before merging it with the video in Resolve. And the downloadable third party plugins have always ended up crashing my system. I wish they had more advanced audio features in the free stock version so I wouldn't have to rely on the third party sources.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

I thought the name was cooler, and the features better.

Davinci Resolve is a powerful video, audio editor and animation creator

Here, where I work, this software is widely used to edit the main social media of the moment, because its construction allows the customization of different sizes and formats of renderings, besides allowing to create animations with texts, images and drawings. Its main benefit is to attend all stages of content production such as video editing, animations, colorization, audio editing and video export.

PROS

This software is very powerful, it brings several ways to edit videos, create animations for YouTube, Facebook, igtv and any type of social media. Available on the three main operating systems on the market such as Windows, Mac and Linux. It has two versions, the free version has some effects blocked, and the full version with all the effects and tools available. At first the software seems complicated to operate, but over time it is possible to learn to use it without much effort. It is a complete software where it has several tabs arranged in a workflow that greatly facilitates the use of the various tools that are: video editor, coloring tools, animation creation, editing and audio mixing with effects such as reverb , delay, noise reduction, side-chain and many others; and a rendering screen where you can choose from various video rendering formats. To install this software you must have a graphics card, in addition to having enough space available on your hard drive to support the caches that are created throughout the Editions, and at least 8GB of RAM. In your video editor you can create animations with phrases from pre-existing models and change them according to your needs. It also accepts import of subtitles from other software, with the possibility of editing them easily. It has a database system where it is possible to create, import and export projects to other similar software.

CONS

In its version for Linux it is not possible to edit videos in MP4 format, needing to convert them to MOV format. It does not accept the customization of some shortcuts.

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

The change was made because in this product I have all the tools I need in one place, making everything easier and faster to produce my work.

Davinci Resolve is a powerhouse tool in the video editing fraternity.

This a the best video editing software for me. Davinci Resolve has got a well structured workflow, from adding media, to editing it, to adding and modifying Fusion effects, Color grading, a variety of video transitions, Open FX plugins. This software is a real gem.

PROS

The advantages of Davinci resolve is that its always being updated to a higher version, which makes it ever relevant in the game. I really liked its abilty to combine multi cameras or combining several videos into one. Color grading is very easy using Davinci Resolve. It has so many video editing tools which are user friendly. Its user interface is very modern and sleek. I can also edit my audio in Davinci Resolve and it has 3D sound effects. A wide variety of transitions and effects enables me to produce quality videos. Resolve is not difficult to master and use. Above all, the software is free and can be upgraded easily.

CONS

Davinci Resolve 17 requires a machine with a bigger working capacity. Sometimes it just crashes and you lose your work. Sometimes rendering takes a lot of time if your machine has a low capacity. However, all these challenges are most common in the unpaid version only.

Reason for choosing DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve helped me take my videos to the next level!

Reasons for switching to DaVinci Resolve

Davinci is user friendly and it has many video editing tools. The transitions are so many and easy to apply.

The best in Color Grading.

I've used the program for more than two years, and I think it's a good option to start working with, considering that it has a free version.

PROS

It is true that there are many programs that enable you to Correct Colors ,Color Grading, add effects and make an integrated montage, but so far no program has been able to reach accuracy and make color correction very professional like Da Vinci Resolve, which has the best and most powerful feature I have seen since it started Work in designing videos that are Color Grading ,Correct Colors and in my opinion, he specializes in this thing more deeply than other programs. The beautiful thing about the program is that it is very easy to use, and you can use it perfectly in a few days, and at the same time, you can get great colors. Keep in mind that DaVinci Resolve has a free full version, which will be why you don't hesitate to use it in your projects.

CONS

If the Da Vinci Resolve program is your first choice to get started, it will be easy to work with as I told you But the problem is when I switched from using Adobe programs to Resolve, it was difficult for me to use the user interface and get used to it, it is completely different from what I used to use.

The most comprehensive product for video editing and color grading

Davinci Resolve is an all-encompassing piece of software that offers users an array of powerful tools and features. From color correction to audio mixing to compositing, this software provides a vast range of possibilities for filmmakers and videographers.Aside from its technical capabilities, it's extremely user-friendly and encourages creativity amongst its users. With plenty of tutorials available online, users can pick up the basics quickly and start playing around with their projects in no time at all.

PROS

What I appreciate about Davinci Resolve is its simplified yet powerful interface. As a long-time user of another competing software, it was quite refreshing to see how easy it was to get up and running with Davinci Resolve. With just a few clicks, I had access to all the tools needed for professional-quality videos such as color grading, audio mixing, and advanced effects. The fact that Blackmagic design took the time to make their software so user-friendly really impressed me.

CONS

Switching from one video editing software to another can be a daunting task, especially when faced with the complexity of Davinci Resolve. Despite its many features and capabilities, getting used to the different interfaces takes time and training. For new users, it may not be so intuitive at first glance. However, with patience and practice, users will begin to understand how this powerful program works. The design is well-organized thanks to its various menus and layouts that allow for easy navigation throughout the timeline. It provides extensive tools for color correction which allows editors to tweak colors accurately in order to achieve a desired look or feel for their projects. Overall, Davinci Resolve offers an array of options that give users greater control over their edit process but it does require some adjustment before you can start using it effectively.

Overall, I am extremely happy with Davinci, especially considering it is a free software.

PROS

I have working knowledge of the common upper-end editing suites, and have extensive experience with Adobe Suite and Premiere. The transition to Davinci was relatively smooth. Because Davinci allows you to do so much within a single editing suite, there was a decent learning curve, but the tools and UI are customizable and relatively straightforward. Once you develop a workflow, it is smooth sailing.

CONS

Some things are a little too adjustable/customizable for my needs. For example, it can be a headache to set up audio capture, linking audio sources to tracks, etc.

Game Changer and it is FREE!!!

I have been using Sony Vegas because it fits my needs. The latest version was bugging and kept crashing. I'm a creature of habit and the thought of switching into a new software irked me. I had no choice and boy did I score big time. Firstly I won't ever have to pay the 70 dollar yearly upgrade (DaVinci is free). Secondly it is a much more powerful platform than what I was previously using. I am completely happy with this software sweet and I may even consider purchasing the "Pro" version as well.

PROS

Davinci Resolve is not your typical video editing software. For one, its entirely free, and its loaded with features that rival of Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. If you are looking to edit a video without cutting corners this is it. If you are looking for software that will do more than your typical iMovie type of software, Davinci Resolve gives you the tools and ability to edit professional, high-quality videos. Including 4k. Need to make TikTok edits, you can! Need to submit footage for professional use, you can? All in all this softtware sweet enables you to be legitimate without spending a dime.

CONS

Its a bit different in terms of navigation that other software titles. It takes some getting used to (timeline) but because there are 100's of applicable youtube tutorials out there, just about every question you may have is available on youtube to learn step by step what to do. You can't go wrong because of the public contribution.

If You're Considering Making The Transition To Resolve, Just Do It

Terrific.

PROS

I was scared of making the transition at first but after using it for just a couple of hours I was hooked and there was no looking back. It was amazing how I didn't even have to watch any tutorial to be able to edit a video. Of course, with more ambitious projects I found myself having to look for extra information and the more I learned about the software the more I fell in love with it. Resolve seems to have an answer for every problem you'll come across in videomaking: syncing audio from different videos automatically, incredible possibilities when editing audio, etc. All of this in just one program. No need for additional software or anything. It's your studio in just one place. And last but not least: constant updates and improvement. The DaVinci team really listens to the users. I think that's why it got so good in the first place.

CONS

I don't dislike anything about DaVinci Resolve.

I have thought about paying for the program but have not need to because all the tools that I need are there for free. When I need the paid tools I would be happy to pay the one time fee.

CONS

I would say the least I liked about the software is that sometimes it is hard for me to find the tool that I needed at certain moments.

Davinci Resolve...there's no other choice

Absolutely fantastic. It can edit, design, and create alsmpt anything you can think of and for the best price in the industry.

PROS

It's the most bang for your buck, its user friendly, it has a vfx studio built in with the Fusion tab, it has a full audio editing tab, and all withing the one program for only $299. It's outrageous that anyone would even think of using something else.

CONS

I wish the customer service as a bit more widespread and easy to work with but I've only had one experience and it wasn't because they weren't responsive, it was just the response was asking me to do code related stuff and It didn't make fixing the issue very easy but that was also 3+ years ago
